Our in depth guide to the 1.4 TFSi or 1.4 TSi engine from the VAG group. The EA211 is a fantastic engine and offers good power and economy.
The earlier EA111 was twincharged, and made a surprising amount of power for such a small capacity engine but did have a few problems and issues.
So although the EA111 still has the 1.4 TFSi or TSi badge it had a fair share of problems and challenges. I would strongly recommend you go with a post 2012 engine as these seem to address many of these problems.
The more recent EVO or Gen3 version is even better, and I'll be doing a video that covers this great little engine in the near future.
Let me know in the comments if you are planning to buy one or have one, and which model of car it is fitted to.
We compare the 1.4 TSi TFsi with the 2.0 Tdi and the 2.0 TFSi and look at quarter mile times and highlight the advantages of this lighter engine.
I came from a 2.0 TDi so this video should be a helpful comparison. Bear in mind I got the EA211 version of this engine and it has been extremely reliable and not exhibited any of the problems the earlier one had.
Discover the benefits and advantages the 1.4 TSi TFSi offers and why it makes sense over a larger capacity engine, if you are wanting performance without the additional costs.
Here is my guide to explain why I chose this engine over the larger 2.0 TFSi and 2.0 TDi engines.

Agree, a brilliant engine. I have a 1.4 Tsi in my mk7 VW Golf and doing our trip to see relatives which is about 70 miles away I'll get about 55-56 mpg. I think if I did a long drive, say 4 or 5 hours I reckon I could get into the 60's mpg. Quite impressive given the great performance the engine also gives.

I think its a great Engine too. I just recently upgraded to a used 2016 Jetta S, 1.4 TSI. The last owner only put 8500 miles on the engine before they got in a car accident that wrecked the front bumper and put the car through insurance hell. Thankfully the majority of the damage was cosmetic and the engine was in great shape. Their insurance totaled the car though and it got put on a auction alongside similar abandoned vehicles. I scooped it up for a cool $5000.00, Got it fixed and it runs fantastic. I fill it up with premium 93 Octane fuel, with easy throttle use and making good use of several downhill slopes on my way to work I barely use a quarter of the tank within a full work week. I never let the tank run low but if I had to push it, I imagine I could go only filling it up once a month. Looking to hopefully make some modifications in the years to come to increase the car's longevity.

Wow, what a find. Hope it serves you well man. Was just wondering, why you don't let the tank run low? Is it to keep the fuel pump clean?

@@mohda.9420 Theres that and I remember reading somewhere that moisture can build up in the tank if sitting for too long on a low tank. So I try to only let her get to half a tank and then fill back up.

I bought a 2011 VW 1.4 TSI off a VW mechanic. It had been his wife's daily driver. bought as of a week ago with 87k on the clock. Very nicely looked after, the only thing I think I have taken a risk on is the 7 speed dry clutch which I have read of having issues. The former owner did assure me that it was fine, but I would really appreciate hearing your thoughts on good general maintenance practice for this. I purchased as a daily driver and for regular hourly trips to visit my mum. Cheers

Don't worry about it at all. Change the oil when it's needed, most don't and they still survive. DSG's gave issues back when the mk5 GTI was around (05-06). They had ironed most of these issues out by the end of the mk5 GTI's life (07-08). The DSG gearbox is without a doubt one of the best automatics on the market.

I have a 1.4tsi Gen 2 EA211 for the 2020 Mk7.5 Golf. It is Stage 3 bolt ons with enhanced cooling and boost control, among many other things. For now, Im still in need of a pro tune remap, as I plan to forge the motor, upgrade the cams, and potentially a drastically superior transmission of DCT variants. The current Automatic 8 speed Tiptronic gearbox has been relentlessly reliable from stock to now, but as far as specs go, I will have to limit my torque to 350ft.lbs per manufacturer recommendation. Although, I am dedicated to surpassing speculation and strive for 400whp and full ethanol fueling modifications.

Was very surprised when I switched from the 2.0 TDI to the 1.4 TSI(2019 Jetta) that there weren't any real trade offs. Initial low torque is about it. But running the TSI in 3rd gear(manual transmission here) on a windy, twisty road is just so much fun. It pulls from way down up to speeds that will surprise you without shifting or annoying downshift of an automatic. Have really come to like this engine and the lower cost of gasoline with near-diesel mileage.

Exactly the same experience as myself, a fellow former 2.0 TDi owner. I'm finding better economy on motorway runs, and about the same around town, plus the thing handles so much better as it's a lighter engine.

@torquecars
@torquecars 7 ай бұрын
No I dont think so I understood that the "rattle" is caused due to the shut down cylinders, the pistons are still moving up and down but there is no combustion going on so you are hearing the explosion pulses from just 2 cylinders instead of the 4. 2 cylinders are also not very balanced which is why you need to be doing 1400rpm or more for this to work, any less and it would probably stall.

"Early versions were twin charged"? only the EA111 had a twin charged variant not the EA211. The EA211 line-up consists of turbo 1.2, 1.4 and N/A 1.6, the turbo engines have now been replaced by the EA211 1.0tsi or the EA211 EVO 1.5tsi. I love these EA211s, I currently have a 1.2tsi Fabia tuned to 197bhp and 328Nm. I'm currently looking at swapping in a 1.4tsi, the right variant will be an almost direct swap and all my current bolt ons will carry over. There are also forged rods and pistons available for the 1.4 and adapter plates that allows the installation if IS series turbos. As you say, underrated little engines and capable of surprising many a displacement snob. I'm watching the rest of your videos on these next

Please fire up any tips or comments on my videos, it will help me improve for future videos. @@torquecars I want to forge the bottom end and run more boost. Combined with a bit of weight loss (I have a whole glass roof I'd like to replace with something light) I'd like 300bhp per tonne. Was hoping to build a 1.6tsi out of the 1.6 NA and a 1.4tsi head but it's looking too difficult to get 1.6 parts because it was only supplied in limited countries (not UK or Western Europe). I've potentially found somewhere that will make a stroker kit but it depends on cost. A second hand 1.4 can be had for £500 or less. I'm working on a FMIC too in the meantime. The 1.5 is nice but not a straight forward swap like a 1.4 would be, I know someone that's done it on their drive pretty much

@torquecars
@torquecars Жыл бұрын
A better flowing exhaust header and sports catalyst will make a difference to turbo spool up times on these engines. A remap will also change the power profile, but you don't want the turbo spooling up too early it causes a lot of extra wear on the turbo. Most experienced mappers will give a decent bump in torque through the rev range.

Check oil levels are correct and oil is clean, make sure it's been properly serviced. The newer the better really. The A3 would give you around 150hp and I get an easy 47-50mpg from mine on my daily commute, so that is a big plus. In the UK road Tax is much lower on the 1.4 TFSi. Avoid the early EA111 and go with one from around 2012 onwards if you can. It may cost a little more than a SEAT but it'll hold on to it's value really well. Add up your fuel usage and take this into account as well. You can remap the engine and make a fairly easy 170hp, and in my opinion will feel just as quick as the 1.8. However if you wanted to make more power and aren't worried about fuel economy then stick with the 1.8T and the upgrade for you would be the 3rd Gen EA888 2.0 TFSi.

Hi, I have a 2012 1.4 tsi, 160bhp engine with 80k mileage. When I start it it rattles a little, not much on idle. Should it sound like this as I read such engines hv timing chains not a belt but chains should last for minimum 150000 What could the rattle be. Comments from anyone very much appreciated.
@torquecars
@torquecars 8 ай бұрын
Hey there, apologies for the delay in my response. I've been quite busy trying to catch up on a shed load of comments! When it comes to a rattle during startup, it's not something you should consider normal. In my case, my car starts up silently. To troubleshoot this issue, you'll want to determine where exactly the rattle is coming from. The primary areas to focus on are the top of the engine, the rear, or somewhere near the bottom. Here are a few potential culprits to consider: Engine Mounts: These can sometimes be the source of a rattle, but it's important to note that this noise won't go away as the engine warms up. Flywheel problems, the dual mass flywheel can start to break down and this will cause a rattle but you'll hear that from the side of the engine. Cam Timing Mechanism: This is a wheel that uses oil pressure to adjust the camshaft position slightly. If it's failing, it can lead to a rattle sound, and it may also affect your car's power delivery. Timing Chain Tensioner: A failing timing chain tensioner can also result in a rattle. This is another component worth checking. Injector Rail Bolts: In some cases, engines have had issues with weak bolts on the injector rail. It's a good idea to inspect and ensure that all these bolts are securely fastened. However, diagnosing the exact issue through messages can be challenging. To get a more accurate assessment, it's advisable to have a professional take a look at your engine in person. They can pinpoint the problem and recommend the necessary repairs.

Im thinking of buying a scirocco 1.4 tfsi is this a good choice over the diesel? Sa reliability is top of my list regards tony
@torquecars
@torquecars Ай бұрын
I would recommend the 1.4 TSi in the Sirocco, providing you keep to the service schedules you should have little trouble at all. The engine suits the Scirocco nicely and will give you decent fuel economy or power when you need it. They can't reach high power figures through tuning cheaply but even modest mods will make quite a difference to the car performance like a map or tune. If you do lots of long journeys and are buying a gen 3 TDi then they are pretty good engines in terms of reliability now.

Have you thought of checking the PCV this can cause oil to dump in high rpm situations. If the new turbo is causing an oil leak then oil will be present in the intake after the turbo, just because it is new don't assume it is good. @torquecars
@torquecars Жыл бұрын
This sounds like the rings could be starting to wear which is crazy on such a new car. On the next oil change run some engine flush through it, I've known this to improve oil consumption in some cases and it would be a fairly cheap thing to do. The other consideration is has the engine properly run in and bedded in? If the mileage is low and it only does short journeys this could be the issue. To run in these engines do lots of high load at low (middle) rpms, steep hills are best. This should help everything bed in properly, but avoid high rpms (upper third) and lugging the engine.

This is the debate, a first version of the EA211 or the EA111 latest incarnation. I have the EA211 from 2015 and have had no problems at all with it and I am really happy. I feel unable to recommend the EA111 if you are able to find an EA211 in your price range, even if it has a few more miles on it. The twincharged version seemed to have a fair few more problems than the standard EA111 Turbo. They changed quite a bit of stuff for the newer engine and most of this is for the better, so whilst I liked the EA111 (but would avoid the twincharged version) I have to recommend the EA211.

EA111 engines are crap! Loads of issues with timing chain and pistons wearing out. I have one on my 2009 Golf 1.4 TSI. Its done 96,000. Used nothing but the best engine oil (Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30) for it every year/every 10,000 miles. Now it’s randomly shaking when driving and diagnostic tool showing a misfire on cylinder head 3. Mechanic said these first generation engines are nothing but a headache once they start acting up. Told me he can clean the injectors as there may be carbon build up but there’s no guarantees as the pistons might be worn out which will need a engine rebuild. Again after doing all that there still may be no guarantees it will start getting its act together. They are a mess and Im so disappointed because I have taken care of my car dutifully and this is how it repays me! EA211 are good as thats when VW learnt its lessons and improved on it.
