Jeep's Grand Cherokee is unusual in America, not just because of it's off-road ability, but because Jeep has a trim level and engine for every occasion. Want off-road ability? There's a Trailhawk trim for that. Looking for an American Range Rover? Grand Cherokee Summit is the way to go. There's an efficient diesel engine, a base RWD model for folks on a budget, a classic American V8 Limited model and a fire-breathing 707 horsepower V8, if you feel like embarrassing BMW M cars and SUVs at the stoplight races. Although the bones of this Jeep are far from new, Jeep has proved that it's still very relevant in today's CUV obsessed market.

Don't let Chrysler scare you that much. I have a 2016 Chrysler 200 with 50K and only problem I had was a bad thermostat at like 10K. Not uncommon to have a minor problem early on. I used to sell Chrysler so let me tell you something about certain Chtysler buyers. Chrysler tends to offer huge rebates on their vehicles. I bought my new 200 that stickered at $25,700 for $15,200. I bought it because I liked it, but huge rebates allow people to get into a new car that they otherwise wouldnt be able to finance. What do you think is easier to finance, a Chrysler with $10k off or a Honda with $1,500 off?? This means that people 'fall into' Chryslers much more than other brands. Your average Honda buyer does their research, goes to a few Honda dealerships and finds who will give them the best deal for the model they want. A good percentage of Chrysler buyers only buy a Chrysler because that's all they could finance. Now, which type of buyer do you suppose takes better care of their car? The average person who fell into ther 200 would have been pissed when the thermostat went at 10K and would have thought their car was junk and they would have stopped maintaining the thing. Since more buyers tend to fall into Chryslers than other brands, and those buyers tend to not do regular maintenance, the numbers for Chryslers tend to skew towards unreliability. However, routine maintenance is HUGE when it comes to long term reliability. If you buy a Chrysler and maintain it you should have it for years. Keep in mind as well that EVERYONE has an uncle, neighbor, friend, or ex that owned (fill in the blank car make) that went bad. Don't believe those stories because its likely that the aunt whose Ford Fusion went bad at 75K wouldn't have gone bad if she ever did an oil change on it.
@brianthomas2839
@brianthomas2839 5 жыл бұрын
The moment your argument relies on consumer reports you automatically lose the argument. That daid, I agree that Chrysler seems to be more unbreliable, but I'm giving you a reason why that is, a larger group of chrysler buyers don't take care of their cars compared with other brands.
@MrHav1k
@MrHav1k 5 жыл бұрын
@@brianthomas2839 Why is Consumer Reports bad? Because they give you the truth that FCA vehicles tend to be unrelable shit? They're not the only ones who came to this conclusion. Stop cherry picking sources for data because you're a FCA fanboy. Consumer Reports is much better than your personal anecdotes. Chrysler makes some very good looking vehicles that perform well, but when it comes to safety and reliability, they're among the worst there is among mainstream brands. Those two factors are huge for most buyers as they should be. No point going bankrupt trying to maintain a car that will kill you if you crash into a tiny Honda Civic.
@brianthomas2839
@brianthomas2839 5 жыл бұрын
@@MrHav1k 1. I agree that Chryslers tend to be less reliable. I'm giving you a reason for that, one that is within your control to mitigate. If you buy a Chrysler and maintain it, it will be averagely reliable. I'm not saying it will be stellar, but it will do ok. And, like I said, I paid $15K for a car that stickered at $25K. If I've got to put a little extra money into it, there's plenty saved on the purchase price to do that. 2. My issue with Consumer Reports is this....It only gives you five categories of reliability, much below, below, average, above average and much above average. Imagine that 4% of 2015 cars have a brake system issue. A car where only 2% of them have an issue is much above average. A car where 6% have an issue may be much worse than average. Now, think of that, a car could be labeled as having an unreliable braking system when you still have a 94% chance of having no problem. Without actual percentages for their reliability their little filled in circles mean NOTHING!

@@brianthomas2839 Well to build on the FCA experience, My 2014 Cherokee bought brand new stranded me 3 times. My maintenance on the vehicle is better than by the book. A transmission replacement, defective engine harness and program issues with said transmission. It had been pretty poor. Now to be fair, FCA has been great keeping me as a customer by giving me platinum service and 8 oil changes for free. The Cherokee has been trouble free with about 57K miles thus far. It reminds me of what happens when you leave a Grand Cherokee in the dryer too long. This is about a 4/5 scale of a Grand Cherokee. Though the Cherokee has better brakes and fuel economy. Otherwise I really do like the Grand Cherokee way more. I do care about reliability and the customer experience as a whole. Though FCA reliability is suspect, my experience with FCA in general is very good. Would I buy another FCA vehicle. Sure, the new JL Wrangler or Grand Cherokee. Otherwise Toyota or Honda would get my business. Or even Subaru. Had great luck with those 3 brands. My 2010 Ford Mustang was stellar in reliability too. Times are great for vehicles, but you can still get stuck.

I own a 2017 Laredo 4x4...it’s pretty bad ass even at the base level. The trims above it would just make it that much better. The fuel economy on the 3.6 is pretty good. You can hit the EPA numbers pretty easily and exceed them on the freeway if you are not driving way over the speed limit. I would totally buy another. The only thing I didn’t like about mine was the rake in the suspension...I fixed it with a leveling kit and it looks 100% better 😉👍🏻

I love the grand Cherokee for how beefy they are built underneath. I have family who live way up in the woods of Vermont and they and everyone around them drive jeeps or Toyota trucks. They all say those are the only two cars that can take constant abuse of the washed out roads and mud. I believe them after driving their 07 grand Cherokee with 180k! Any review of a Jeep product has to discuss reliability or dependability. As nice as they are on paper they simply don't hold up according to the data. (Not my opinion.) CR reliability ratings for 2014-16 named Grand Cherokee, Renegade, and Cherokee worst in their respective segments. JD Powers Dependability by manufacturer has jeep ranked at the bottom with only Chrysler and Land Rover scoring worse. Just to reference a couple of data points. If Jeeps were reliable/dependable, they would be a great option.

The wife and I are doing research / pre-shopping for a $50-$60K SUV/Crossover to replace our current 2014 JGC Limited. This has been a solid vehicle, and we considered upgrading to an Overland. However, our service experiences were not on the level of the ownership experience of a $50-$60K vehicle. Not even for our $40K vehicle, come to think of it. And that's a shame because Jeeps have a lot to offer their owners. That is the only reason we won't be getting another JGC.

The way FCA makes SUVs appeals to me greatly (though I wouldn't touch their long term reliability with a ten foot pole, sorry). They're much more serious and capable vehicles than most of the lifted hatchbacks that most brands call SUVs (IMO, if you're buying one of those cars, just buy a danged car...stop pretending you're driving anything but a car because that's all those are), but they are unibody-based and are more refined than body-on-frame vehicles. I wish our car market had way LESS typical unibody CUVs, way MORE cars and wagons and hatchbacks, way LESS body-on-frame trucks, and way MORE heavy duty unibody vehicles like the Durango and Grand Cherokee for people who actually use the capability of a larger vehicle.

I suspect I probably won't be getting a 3rd but it has just been difficult to find any competitors at a mid point price range that offer the features I want.

Why is he comparing to a Ford Edge? The Mercedes GLE is much more the comparison point. Is the Jeep a fair trade off discount from that? Is the adaptive cruise 0mph? Traffic Jam Assist?

The title of the video is very misleading, its a 2018 trackhawk. You can tell because of the infotainment screen not having flush bezels. Also the Grand cherokee tows 3200 (non towing package) and up to 7200 with the v8 and tow group 4.

As a consumer that owns a Ford Edge Sport (1.5 years old) that did cross shop it against a GC and a RX to list a few, I think it certainly does compare. If you primary duty is on road, then it certainly does compare. If you are looking for towing or offroad primarily, then the GC would not compare against something like a Ford Edge. So I agree and disagree. As always, keep the good reviews coming. Quite possibly the best detailed videos on YT. =)

22:37 Jeep offers 12 GC trims. However, in my region at least, dealers don't stock anything other than Laredo's and Limited's. Good luck even finding a 4x4.

I don't understand why you don't mention the Toyota 4Runner as the directest of all competitors? The Jeep is synonymous with off roading. Your comparisions to Mercedes, Porsches and BMWs make no sense to me whatsoever. I think the only real direct comparison is the 4Runner. I'm deciding myself whether to purchase a Grand Cherokee Trailhawk or a 4Runner TRD Off Road. Difficult choice.

The Grand Cherokee is still a crossover that can go off road, unlike many of its competitors... Jeep even poked fun at one of them (the Kia Sorento) in one of its latest commercials... plus it's very comfortable, luxurious (real wood trim!), and while more expensive than its competitors, it has a large fuel tank and is very powerful and fuel-efficient. We've owned every generation of Grand Cherokee, and our current 2014 is the best one we've owned yet!!! :)

The Jeep predates SUV and Crossover, so it cannot be characterized as either one. SUV and Crossover are modern improvements (barely) on the Jeep and so Jeep was left behind. In an attempt catch up to Toyota (who invented the SUV category) Jeep has attempted to remake itself into something it's not, it's not comfortable, it's not flexible, its not sporty and its utility is severely limited. Having learned to drive in a 1948 Willys Jeep, and coming from a family of mechanics who worked on thousands of them (maybe more) we are very familiar with them and can say categorically that they are an anachronism. Even the JL is only now starting to see improvements that should have been implemented decades ago and at the same time it introduces new flaws that set it back, so it all is just a wash. Jeep its still annoying to drive, uncomfortable, unreliable and has lost a lot of its utility when they started trying to push it into the soccer-mom/luxury market. Its consumer value has been doing every year because its cost keeps going up but to really is not any better than it was in the seventies or eighties. The TrackHawk is even more of a conundrum, it's a lousy incarnation of the original Jeep ideal, with a Cadillac price tag and an engine that should have stayed in the Challenger. Who in their right mind would create a $100,000 vehicle thats faster than most Mustangs but you easy can't take it off road because you might get a scratch in it. I don't want my kids riding in such a crazy fast truck on the way to their soccer games because it feels too much like a volatile combination waiting to go off. Don't confuse grip with handling, you can increase grip by simply changing to a stickier (basically) tire. Handling is affected by many factors inclusive suspension design, suspension tuning and including many other characteristics including ride height. Jeeps can be given a lot of grip for asphalt driving, but that grip is hard to control because their handling characteristics are still rather poor.

towing cap with the v6 is 6200 on 4x4 models, 6400 on 4x2 models. The $5k leather package is NOT available on Overland, but only Summit, SRT and TrackHawk. The leather airbag cover is standard on the TrackHawk and comes only with the $5k leather package in SRT and Summit. Not available on lower models. I don't know where you got the info from on the 5.7 Hemi's 0-60 time. Was this from your testing? It is closer to 6.5 seconds. 5.7 seconds would need some extensive mods and a tune. 6.5s is pretty slow for all that torque. I guess they were going for the smooth low rpm acceleration given the 390lb ft and so chose a really high final drive. You get lower final drives with the v6 and much lower with the SRT. Maybe this, in addition to the less power and torque vs other FCA cars with the same 5.7L Hemi was an attempt to distance the 5.7 and 6.4 in the Grand Cherokee. The TrackHawk in the video is a 2018 model. 2019 have flush mount nav screens with piano black bezels around the ac and center console.

The Track Hawk IS NOT "Off-Road Mission" oriented. Jeep took a off road capable Grand Cherokee and tried to make it track capable. Then Jeep slapped a $100,000.00 sticker on it. The depreciation of this Track Hawk will make your head spin!

I've owned 6 Jeeps. All before Daimler Benz and Fiat ownership. The 4 GC's and 1 Liberty were all reliable. The Patriot not so much. I have a Kia Optima for 2 1/2 years and it's been very reliable for 120k miles of Uber driving. I'll soon be retiring and considering a Kia Sorento or Niro EV.

I know comparisons are hard for the GC but I think the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport and VW Toureg would be direct competitors for the Laredo through Limited trims while the Trailhawk and up competes with the Audi Q5 and Toyota 4Runner. In international markets, the Toyota Prado would also be a good comparison.

Why wouldn’t you compare this to a 4Runner? Unibody and frame on body difference aside, seems to me they are very close competitors and I doubt the average consumer could tell you the difference in chassis’s to begin with.

The Grand Cherokee is as American as Apple Pie. I love the WK2 platform. I should have bought one of these instead of my Cherokee. But there is no competition because a Jeep is a Jeep. Going off road is their signature. A new Grand Cherokee will soon be at the dealers. Will it be drastically different than this one? Doubt it. FCA sells allot of these. Jeep and Ram are what keep FCA afloat. Their cars are a sales joke, like most out there. Trucks and SUVs are it these days. The 300 will be going away after this model year. The Dart, and the 200 are already gone. Jeep has done a great job making vehicles for just about everyone enamored by the Jeep brand and mystique. FCA has a big responsibility not to ruin this iconic brand. The Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee are the anchor that makes Jeep, Jeep.

I would define a crossover based on its intended purpose, that is that it was meant to blend the handling, driving, economy characteristics of a car and the "urban utility" of a real SUV/truck. The Grand Cherokee has always been an offroader first and foremost. w/c just happens to utilize the inherent rigidity and lightness of a monocoque body at the sacrifice of a truck-like strength and capacity. It has also adopted the ride sophistication of a 4-wheel independent suspension following the Range Rover. It still however retains all the mechanical accessories that allow it to do much more than a crossover when going offroad. So in conclusion, a car should have a dual-range 4wd system and sufficient ride height (adjustable or not) to be called an SUV. A crossover on the otherhand is a pretend SUV. P.S. the 96-02 Mercury Mountaineer (V8) is the exception though it cannot in any other way be described as a crossover.

I own a 2017 Jeep GC Trailhawk and find your review very interesting and accurate; before buying mine I researched a lot of them, but for the price and the purpose, there is no comparison, if you want power. I will research again, but will probably buy another one in Jan. 2020, maybe go with the Limited though.
