@htoddgriffin4787 this boat is very basic and looks run down. Must have been a charter and not well taken care of. That money for those features? Nah thanks
@lbart2005 Жыл бұрын
@htoddgriffin4787 Those welds are the nautical equivalent to spot welds. Once all the plates are in place and everything looks good, then they go over the welds, finishing them up and sealing the boat. It's done like that on purpose. They are not because of shoddy workmanship.

I like the sort of retro look of those Berings from a few year ago. They remind me of naval ships from WWI. I'm into styles they had back in the day of my grandparents up to my childhood. (Late 1800s to 1960s) I made my living photographing vintage pinup and old style Hollywood portraiture. I was really surprised when they introduced their new designs and I love them just as much.

I gotta say, Bering life is a lifelong dream.. Ever since I first learned of Bering, and how over the top the build quality is, I knew whatI wanted in life. Even though the 70 isn't to my taste, as I prefer the 65/72, it's amazing to see (and correct me if I'm wrong..) a full displacement steel vessel that can do nearly 2 NMPG at cruise! That alone is amazing. Most boats of this size, you're lucky to see half that. This Bering is bound to make someone's retirement life amazing!

French doors are of light construction usually with glass panes or wooden slats extending most of its length and usually swing outward. They are often seen on balconies and interior spaces where ruggedness are less of a concern. The doors on that yacht are double doors because of their robustness. Metal fittings used to secure watertight doors, hatch covers and scuttles are called dogs. Sometimes claws. Securing a watertight door is called dogging. In engineering, a dog is a tool that prevents or imparts movement through physical engagement. It's a metaphor derived from the idea of a dog biting and holding onto something. A "dog" device always has some special engineering element to it. It is never a simple wedge, bar or pipe.
@therealDonMac Жыл бұрын
20+ years of building homes here. French doors are glass paneled, double doors are solid. That is literally the only defining difference in the two, for homes, anyway. I don't know if they have different meanings on boats, but not sure why they would.

Not cheap -- too expensive for average earning citizens in US and Europe, but when comparing to other ships at this size and capability there appears nothing else that is competitive on price and capability. Nordhavns are about the same price or perhaps sometimes a little cheaper used (but I've seen more expensive also)...and great with high quality composite hulls (pretty amazing what can be done with composites now), but not steel. Other brands have really outdated interiors (lots of wood and "traditional American" design instead of sleek minimalist modern look of Bering interiors) and outdated exterior looks with less performance from what I can tell (I'm not an expert who has owned to compare). Even if one saves the initial purchase funds, most people plan on 10% annual operating cost (based on value of boat), so $300,000 annual operating, docking and maintenance cost of a $3M ship. If costs are low... maybe 5%, but that's still $150,000. If one lives on it, may compare that to about 2%-5% annual cost for maintaining a land based home, taxes, etc. I live in Boston and spend about $50k per year to live in a $1M condo when one adds up fees, taxes, maintenance, utilities, etc... so that's 5% on land in this specific case. Years when I've renovated the condo, it's more like $100k+ . Others probably live in $1M homes that take less maintenance... don't know. Anyhow, worth considering if one lives on a boat to compare it to costs of living on land, including annual costs.

Agree with Alexi 100% re captain's chair, the main reason to go with a leaning post is it will protect against napping captains. When standing up against the leaning post, if you nod off, you will stumble and fall, often knocking out a few teeth. Experience dictates that after 4 to 5 rounds of this, 87% of captains are cured, the balance quit boating or are no longer with us!!!!!!
