The Roadster is next in line to get the new torque monster 1254cc ShiftCam motor. But has it become the "lazy man's" Roadster?

I really enjoyed your video. I bought a brand new one of these this year. Did not go for the sport colour scheme. However I strongly recommend engine bars (BMW issue, and quite affordable). I dropped the bike once manoeuvring on my drive (foot slipped on some leaves). The whole bike rested on the bar, and absolutely no damage. Saying that, to my pleasant surprise I was able to lift it single handed. It is a perfect roadster. Superb grunt and acceleration form low revs (143 NM torque is more than many sports bikes). The only place where sports bikes will beat it is on a race track, but I bought my bike to tour the countryside, not for high rev track racing. Can ride it all day. I truly average 64 mpg, giving it a tank range of 250 miles. However don't estimate its acceleration, in gear 3, and 7000 revs it will launch you holding on to the handle bars. The trouble is there is no need to do this on a public road (ermm speed limits). As a roadster it is perfect.

symphatischer Beitrag.

This is a really great video about an absolutely fantastic BMW motorcycle. Scott’s description is 100 % spot-on. So much so in fact that based on this video I had to test this machine about a year ago. This video and that test ride stayed with me to the extent that I ordered one in February this year. Had it delivered in early April: touring package plus a quickshifter and driving modes pro. So some 1,800 km later: as Scott says - it does put a smile on your face!! If you are looking for a roadster style MC, go for this one - it will not disappoint you. Listen to Scott’s consistent chuckle - I do the same when riding this thing. And by the way: no nitpicks here - this is just THE roadster!! 😄

And there are plenty of after-market accessories for this bike to make it into anything you want it to be. Ride safe, Scott

Well, I have praised both the review and the bike previously. Just made 5,000 km on the clock now a year down the line (took delivery of it in April 2021). And that has been 5,000 km of pure delight, if you ask me. Never regretted acting on Scott’s review! Just checked my BMW app with rides history and stuff: I am rarely over 5,000 rpm and think I haven’t even taken it above 6,000 rpm. Still it has more than ample speed and performance to get away from a light or an uncanny situation. That torque does the trick! And just to adjust Scott’s review slightly - in my opinion it is actually quite flickable: I use it for city commuting every (sunny) day and it is a joy! Some will say that the quick shifter is clunky - well, you just have to learn how to use it and you will find it silky smooth. Try one…🤗

Great filming and editing. Wish I could afford upgrading from my R1200RS LC to R1250RS. I really like the new instrument and LED lights and if the new shiftcam motor is even better and more frugile than the 1200 LC engine, I think this is close to perfection.

I'm having the same thoughts .... Hoping this has some slightly better low end (why I keep my 2010 street triple around) and gets past the annoying turbulence the bmw r1200 RS offers unless fitted with a sail. Scott, can you speak to any improvement in the low to mid range vs the 1200 LC engines, air flow and engine heat (in the rain perhaps not)

@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, yes the R is a roadster bike, which means it's just like the car two seat roadster, sitting upright and does have some power but that's not the focus. The RS is slightly 3-4° forward but the R is straight up. I loved the sitting position, comfortable over long periods of time but there is no wind protection, well other than the head light and TFT display but I have ridden with guys that have put after market screens on them and they love taking trips now that they have the screens and bags. And several of the guys say that this is the best way to use the boxer motor! take care, Scott

Is BMW missing a trick by not incorporating the satnav into the TFT display or is it a cynical way of getting more money out of you. After all, you only need speed on screen (maybe rpm if you're deaf). Any "red light warning" could replace the satnav function depending on urgency.

While a very nice moto that R900F / XR900 I found the motor a little uninspiring,...smooth nice all round but not exciting. I parked it and hopped on the R1250R and it was everything the 900 wasn't and then some. Not sure what this reviewer is talking about, this bike is "stonking" fast, pulls like a freight train, smooth as glass and handles like on rails (ESA model). I also found it changed direction extremely well. Had it WELL over the ton mark a few times and it got there in the blink of an eye! So confidence inspiring That motor is a gem as was previous iterations but this one is an absolute gem. There is something about a boxer... I have had 3 GS;s (11, 1150,1200) over the span of 9 years. This motor is in a different stratosphere compared to previous. as is the chassis/suspension from previous. I have ridden the 890 Duke R, the 2020 Duke GT (the only one arguably as good if not better) and the new 900's and this new R1250R presses all the right buttons. Great looking roadster das boot ! I know reviews are personal observations but have to disagree with his. I'm on to buying one..

would you think the protection and seating position amenable to weekend multi hour high speed joyrides. I have a street triple and a bmw RS and trying to find that sweet spot that has a more grounded, gentle soak up bumps suspension (BMW) , great high end (BMW), but a more lively low end (street triple) and telepathic tip in (street) to put a grin on your face. I love Nakeds and I love the ergos on the street ... the RS ok with some MV risers for my short arms (5'9 and 30' inseam). 80% commute, 20% free time / escape family and disappear for 3-7 hours. My body is ~50, my brain about 23 ... so trying to match comfort to performance. This or something different?

Yes, on all BMW's. It's been that way for a few years now, don't remember when they started doing it but now every model, the front is linked to the rear. Except maybe the S1000RR, because it's a sport bike and one may want more control over which tire is braking and which one not.

I've heard the blipper works well on the boxer engine but not so much the quickshifter?
@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve 4 жыл бұрын
Well, it depends on who you ask 😊 If you ask a BMW guy, then it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. But if you ask a guy that has ridden all big bore OEM's bikes (Triumph, KTM, Honda, Kawasaki, Indian...etc.), you'll get a different response to this question. I'm the latter guy. Yes, it works but does it "work well" as the other OEM's, simple answer is no. There are certain conditions under which an OEM will say how to "properly use" the QS/bliper and for example Kawasaki and BMW have the most conditions under which they say "proper use" for it to work correctly. Now I'm talking big bore here, not the middleweight/smaller engines, also these conditions especially happen with twins, but Kawasaki has these "certain conditions" on their 1043cc 4 cyl...so it really depends on the OEM. Why BMW cannot make their big 1250 Boxer-twin shift as well as KTM's 1301 v-twin or Triumph's 1200 parallel-twin or even Ducati's 1200/1260 v-twin is beyond me. Maybe it's the Boxer engine configuration & low RPM's that is hindering it (cause that's the answer I get from BMW guys). And let's not go there about quality/maintenance cost as BMW is the highest in main./repair costs. Sorry to write a book but this is a very heated topic among the motorcycling community.

Great review Scott, nice style and very easy to watch. I've got a 2018 R1200R, I've had a few bikes lately the same ~230kg weight range (Triumph Tiger 800XC, Honda Africa Twin and Moto Guzzi Breva 1200). The R1200R feels hands-down way lighter than these comparable bikes. It's much easier to manouever, and is much more nimble (even 'flickable' by comparison!) The way it carries it's weight so low, the low seat height and the wide handlebars all make this bike very easy to handle and ride. I use this as my go-to commuter over my smaller and lighter bikes now. I decided not to wait for the 1250R coz it's not available here in NZ for some time yet, and the previous model was on run-out special (2.5k off). I'd love to have that beautiful TFT, but I invested in a BMW Navigator and I spend my time looking at that as much as the the old screen. This bike is a great commuter, awesome weekend canyon carver, and I'm about to do a 3k tour on it. It's a keeper (ok yeah I've said that before..)

Interesting seeing this again. You mentioned the weight a few times. Some time later you bought the F900XR, 20 kg lighter than the R. Did that seem faster? More recently you bought a R1250RT, which is 40 kg heavier than the R. So I guess weight isn’t the most important factor with these boxers?

The reason I went from a KTM1290 Super Duke R, 5yrs & a naked bike, then to a 900XR for 2 years, then this year to a 1250RT is because I have arthritis in my neck and it's getting worse. Riding a bike with no wind protection is fine on the day I ride it but I pay for it the next day, and for days and days, depending on the bike sometimes even weeks, very painful. The wind pressure on my helmet and a sporty suspension, both make up the problem for my neck. So the XR solved the problem a little bit but on trips lasting longer than 3 days, I just couldn't bare the pain any longer, so, the RT is the sweet spot, has both wind protection and soft suspension. This is the reason you didn't see an Alps trip this last winter, I did go last summer but didn't film it and it only lasted 5 of the planned 10 days and the last 2 days was not fun because of the pain in my neck. When I got home, I did not even sit on a bike for 3 weeks and this was July, right in the middle of riding season. take care, Scott

@@NothingToProve - hi. Thank you for that reply. I forgot about your arthritis. I remember trading my R for an RT back in 2013 (90 Jahre edition) was for health reasons too, after a severe chest infection. I like the RT. I tried a 2019 , but sadly it was too heavy, so the F900XR is the best compromise. I wish i had a shaft drive boxer though… cheers for UK.

This is such a nice and great review! I have (since a couple of years back when tested a 2012-model) decided to get a R1200R/R1250R, so thanks for making me even more secure of this choice! Very interested if you (or someone else) has done a comparison between the 2011-14 and this? (Tried the 2015 and didn’t like it as much as the elder one, but haven’t tested the 2019-22 yet…) Also interested in 2019 vs 2021 models, if there’s any differences. Great if you/anyone could help! Really love the looks of this opt. 719 and color…:)) Great vid once again!!

Thank you, na, no changes from 19 to 22 as of yet. The Shift-cam Motor is better than yours but not so significant. So, keep your 2012 and continue to get your ROI. But if you really want to be up to date then yea, get the 22 model, it is still a great machine. take care, Scott

I don’t own the 2012, just decided to go for the big boxer engine but if you don’t think there’s any major differences I’ll be saving a lot of money taking a 2012 in stead of the 2019-22…:)) Do you know if there’s any difference between the 2012 “normal” vs the “classic” model except for the looks? Anything special to be aware of when testing one?

Well, you only live once and it's only money! LOL! Seriously though, I do like the torque, it's every where on the new motor...hmmm...that is a tough question. It comes down to if you have the money or not, it's that simple. And yes, more torque in any way, shape or form is worth the price. :)

BMW suspension, brakes, drivetrain, and electronic aids are MASTERFUL and work together like a world class symphony. The electronic aids are almost to the point of being dangerous because they compensate so well for rider error, and riders may not fully understand the consequences of bad technique because the bike does the correction for you.

Why do you pronounce chassis the way you do (no long e in second syllable). Websters dictionary, and others, have a long e at the end and is the way I've always heard it pronounced
@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I've worked 25 years in the automotive industry and 10 of those years at Ford Motor Company in the powertrain division and every day, hundreds of times a day at Ford in meetings, conversations...etc. that is the way it is pronounced. At Ford you can say it either way, it's just that we say it so many times a day that every one shortens it because it just faster. You'll notice that in my more recent videos I've tried to say all the syllables of the word but when I'm in a hurry to get all the words out, old habits kick in... So you can say potato different ways and tomato different ways. So why not chassis? LOL!

@@londonbiker4266 Rock solid. The problem is that on the RS the bars are clipped right on to the triple clamp and the R they are not, it's one solid bar going over top of the triple clamp, therefore you don't feel the vibration of the motor as much on the R.

Because I only buy green BMWs (mostly cars though!) I bought a 2019 Pollux Metallic Matte F 850 GS a few days ago.... and then thanks to this video, discovered the R 1250 R in the same Pollux green! But this roadster is apparently not available in the USA yet, otherwise I would have had a hard time deciding between the two. I know the GS is a totally different bike, but I think I'd enjoy the roadster a lot more on the street than the GS (although it's a great commuter as well). My local dealer tells me the R 1250 R won't be available stateside until the fall 2019. Why, if it's already out in Europe!?!?!?! Although the R nine T's are cool, I really wanted a true BMW water cooled Shift-Cam boxer twin, shaft drive, and all the new TFT electronics (which I am enjoying on the GS)... This R 1250 R ticks off a lot of boxes; too bad the RS version doesn't come in Pollux.... Thanks for another great BMW motorcycle review Scott - Danke!

Yes the TFT is sharp but I would rather have a analog instrument setup personally. Okay that is subjective but why does a very good bike have to be styled like a seven year did it. We know they the difference between beautiful (R90 series) and let's be polite on this model and say plain? Didn't BMW make sharp looking roadster called the Mystic a couple of decades ago? Just too many sharp angles with no outside beauty, too bad.

I am truly sorry for being weak. I was not born like Thor, the muscles, the hair, the looks...etc. Most of us mere mortal men would like a light weight commuter bike and 240 kg is getting...well let's just say to the limit of no longer being light...and riding it day after day might get old. That was all I said in the video. I have owned a Honda ST1100 and did commute on that for a while and that is a lot heavier than 240kg, so I have commuted on heavy bikes but I also know guys that prefer light weight commuter bikes, those are the guys I'm talking to in the video. Of course not you, the God of Thunder! :) LOL! Sorry, just havin' a little fun with you that's all. Get a few beers in me and my sarcasm goes way further.
