Great review as usual. IMO the 19 CB500X seems the closest to a unicorn all-in-one bike. Lighter than the 1200/800 bikes for offroad, smoother and more power than a dualsport on road. Personally I'll stick with one of each of the ones I mentioned (R1200GSA & DR650) but if I had to go with one bike this would be it. Thanks Kyle!

I just sold my 2018 Africa Twin Adventure Sports. 9K in aftermarket but at the end of the day just too heavy for me to move around and felt like I would drop it at every stop. Just got a 2021 CB500X. Only a couple of rides so far but what a difference so easy to ride and to move around. Comfortable and I have already added a bunch of stuff to the bike. Plan on just light offroad so waiting on the decision to get the RR upgrade.

I've owned the big dual sport bikes and found myself gradually preferring smaller displacement dual sports as I spent more time in the saddle. The 2019 CB 500X is my latest bike and replaces my DR 650. I agree that the suspension includes many compromises, but overall this Honda is the most versatile of the dual sports I've ridden. The bonus is that it's just so much fun to ride.

Thank Kyle. One thing you might point out about the CB500x design and using this bike off-road is the frame/engine combo. Having a crash or hitting the skid plate really hard could easily crack the engine block. I have not seen this happen personally but have heard of 2 people now that had this issue. I have heard of 3 additional owners that have had issues with the bolt that attaches the crash bars to the engine block.

thanks brad just what a lot of us were waiting for! adding to this I tried both the 2019 and my older 2017 on gravel roads recently and firstly- I'm surprised that. road tyres are fine (my first time taking non dual sport bikes off road), and secondly, on gravel I didn't feel much difference unless it got bumpy or it got deep- the 19 inch was a nice addition- i'll bet on more technical roads and bumpier terrain it'll make an even bigger difference. Also in retrospect, I have to agree that the stock suspension is a bit soft and lacks dampening- I did the forks and rear on mine to wilbers suspension- stiffer fork springs and shock springs- rebound and preload adjusters in the rear and preload in the forks- I only thought about it now but I think that evened out a lot of the difference between the older and newer cb on gravel! On road, the older cb felt much more nimble (I guess the 17 front and suspension??), and call me crazy- but I seriously feel like the older cb has more torque even though honda says the new one has more- but not sure why, maybe euro 4?
@manybikes4 жыл бұрын
Kim Cruz Thanks for your Real World feedback! Yes, probably Euro 4... and the fact that power delivery was smoother out. Suspension on any bike will help it feel much better than a factory bike. The 17” vs. 19” front on hardpack dirt / gravel roads will be about the same. The 17” will for sure feel more grounded on the pavement. Thanks for Watching and for taking the time to comment. - Kyle

Grip Puppies, hand guards, SW Motech foot-pegs, an after market exhaust (for weight reduction/not sound). You don't really need the crash bars unless you are doing real off-road. If you are, upgrade your springs for your weight, or just get a CRF 450RL or Africa Twin. The engine is rock solid but she's an adv tourer, not a dual sport. She's a workhorse.

Hi Kyle! Wonderful review once again! I've this beauty with 20K on. I just love my mistress! I'm mentioning some things that really and still surprising me, average fuel consumption ( riding around 80, 90 km/h or 50/55 m/h you can get 2,6 L/100km or 90 mpg, ridiculous) which it's priceless, didn't change yet sprockets, chain and tires still OEM, here quite of lucky I believe! Basically until now just maintenance costs and 0 issues!!! In my opinion, I'm 1,75cm or 5' 9" windscreen high position, hand guards, gel seat investment, sw motech footpegs give better riding position in long journeys, and please adjust your sag (forks and rear shock, trust me makes your ride different)!!! Definitely agree about upgrading the suspension that's my next move, will make it perfectly balanced I believe for my needs, specially off-road, if you do mainly roads OEM it's more than enough don't waist your money! I'm researching Ohlins and RR set as soon it's finished the lockdown here in Spain! Now a question for the Mr. Expertise, for the a rear tire in this case I'm thinking in a Dunlop trailmax mission you go for the 150 or 170? Kyle thanks for your videos, keep healthier and that's my wishes for any each of you. Take care guys and ride safe!

Really awesome review Kyle! Been on the fence between the CB500X and the F750GS. Even been thinking of the NC750X. I'm a Honda guy (have a 600 and 750 Shadow) and was looking at the CB650R when I made a sharp left turn and decided I needed some adventure biking back in my life again (brings me back to my first years riding on a KE125 back in the 80s). Sure the BM and Honda are in different price points and I like the creature comforts of the BM but I also like the smaller scale of the CB500X and the idea that if I wanted to, I could upgrade parts with Rally Raid components if I ever felt it was lacking in off-road capabilities. You certainly showed what it is capable of though! Very surprised so thanks for opening my eyes to what it can do! What are your thoughts on comparing it to the F750GS?
@manybikes4 жыл бұрын
Okay... for off-road use the CB500X is a much lighter feeling bad easier bike ride ride and maneuver. The F750GS is a better on-road bike as it does handle the higher highway speeds with just a little more ease. The F750GS is bigger... and longer so if you plan to ride 2-up it’d be my recommendation. There isn’t much upgrade you can do to the F750GS to make it “more off-road oriented” where as the Rally Raid options for the CB500X are nothing short of amazing. The NC750X is a great bike too, much more power over the 500... but will not be as easy to ride off-road if you go that route. Hope this helps!!!! Oh, I too love Honda motorcycles. I’ve owned a 1978 CX500, 1998 XT1100C, 2003 VTX1300 and a three GoldWing’s. I’ve ridden a dozen more on longterm loans... 3 Africa Twins, CB500X, half a dozen dirt bikes, the Grom and the Monkey. Ride safe out there!

I'm 66 Years young. Been Licensed for bikes since I was 18. 2 Days ago I bought a 2018 with 3000 Miles on it for #4500. I hope to keep this bike for about 10 years, and it will likely be the last Bike I own. I agree wholeheartedly that the thing is a mini Beast on the street that needs NOTHING! I just CAN'T see laying out 12K for an Africa Twin at this late stage of my life. That being said, I've been on a 2021 500X, and loved it. I further agree that Honda needs to beef up the Suspension on the X, and it would be WELL worth the extra $300 or so for the upgrade! LOVE MY LITTLE 500X!

@@Planet_Wax Just the basic shock on the rear, progressive springs and valve emulators on the front. Has made the bike noticeably more stable. I did drill out the std damper rods in the forks so that the new valves would do their job during high speed compression.

Thanks for the great video! A question: I'm about 152 lbs and 5 ft. 6 inches. Inseam is 30 inches. According to your best assessments: 1) Will the standard suspension be OK for my weight on roads and trails like those in this video? 2) If not, will a suspension re-valve be OK, or would you recommend a new suspension entirely? 3) Could a better suspension make the seat height too high? Thanks for helping people out here in the comments! 👍🏻

Yes, absolutely! I am 5' 9" tall with a 32" inseam and I weigh in at just over 200 lbs. This suspension might be perfect for you. Great review! I've been debating between this bike and the KTM 390 Adventure. Have you had a chance to check that one out yet? I've watched tons of videos on both and have sat on both. I love the weight and form factor of the KTM, but realize the Honda would be a smoother on-road option. I want something that is off-road worthy and something I can pick up when I dump then thing in a tight spot.
@manybikes4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your inquiry Gregory. I have spend a good deal of time on the CB500X and I have converted my 390 Duke into an ADV bike... I have some videos I have not yet had the time to edit together with some pretty hard core off-road action on the Duke. I have also been riding the 390 back and forth from Los Angels, CA to Phoenix, AZ... 375 each direction. It handles the freeway just fine at 80 to 85 mph all-day-long. I do like the feel of the KTM better for off-road as the Honda feels a little top heavy in comparison. Overall reliably of the Honda will be better... it is smoother on the highway and is a little less cramped. That being said the motor in the KTM is more fun and I find it a little easier to ride off road than the Honda. Both will serve you well... just a matter of preference.

There is a project of an Africa twin 790cc based on the engine of the NCX750.Of course it's a long waited bike, with beafier suspensions and no electronics. if made in Thailand it will be cheap, around 9000 USD,but if manufactured in Japan the price will be higher. I own a CB 500X 2018 in Thailand and since I have seen the video of a french rider who went to Nordkapp, Norway, I have less confidence to venture off road. He had a big protection under his engine and following his KTM's friends on the trails he broke one of the attaching point of the engine guard on the engine itself. He never replied to my comment on is video where I asked he he had to replace all the lower engine. There are many engine guards available but none should be bolted on the engine. For sure this 500X is an excellent dual purpose bike with a very low gas consumption. My next modification will be to swap from the 15 to a 16 sprocket and also install the speedo calibrator from 12oclockslabs.This bike suits my goals as I only ride on thai roads. The worst would be the unpaved dusty or muddy roads of Laos and northern Vietnam next year...if Covid is ended.

Rally Raid makes wheels as does another company for WAY LESS.... I'll have to dig it up for you. The CB is WAY lighter than the AT or at least it feels that way. I could never hop the front wheel manually on the AT, but on the CB it was easy. I think it also has to do with the bent knee on the CB where as I struggle with the height of the AT. Mark Levy Nice! How would you describe the difference in feeling of riding each bike? I’m curious to hear what you have to say... Thanks for watching. - Kyle
@marklevy94 жыл бұрын
Kyle Bradshaw simply very different! The AT you feel you sit on it rather than in it and as a result you don’t feel as one or engaged in the bike. The AT is not as “supple” as the NC which is great in the twisties. The low end torque of the NC is it’s trump card being able to pull in 3rd gear from 15 mph up to 70mph without any fuss. For highways the AT is better as there is more wind protection, however get a bigger screen for the NC, problem solved. The other reason for changing, and this was probably the main reason was my AT had the DCT gear box and I always found it was in the wrong gear regardless of the Sport mode I would use and you constantly had to flip around with the paddles. In a sprint from the lights, awesome as the acceleration and seamless gear changes could not be beaten, however I have opted for a manual for my NC750X which is nearly as easy as the CB500X. If you ride a lot on highways and then go off road the Africa Twin is a fantastic machine, however if you just ride on the road, it’s weight, size and handling as it feels top heavy and personally believe there are more user friendly Adventure style bikes - hence the reason for going for the NC750X. Plus, the spoke wheels are are a pain in the butt to clean!!!

@manybikes3 жыл бұрын
Well this is a HOT topic. 1st question I have is why? Tubes work. I carry a tube with me even when running tubeless so I can "get home" if I cant fix the tire cut / get it to re-bead. Anyhow... you silicone or epoxy your spoke nipples in the drop center of the rim. When dry you put some 3M tape over them to double seal the spokes. Fit your tire... and ride! Pretty simple but the do fail over time.

By the time you put the money into the "rally Raid" upgrades, you could have bought a Africa Twin. Rally Raid figured out how to "polish a turd", but with a extra hefty price tag. Dont get me wrong, the CB 500X is OK, but thats about it, no different than every other mediocre 500. Honda capitalized on a "look" with a affordable price tag, while leaving out giving the customer what they expected. The Honda marketing team really knocked it out of the park FOR HONDA SALES. This bike is NOT designed for adventure riding unless you want to give an extra half of what it cost to a company called Rally Raid. Its Not designed for feeling comfortable on highways . Its more like a minibike that Ill be glad to get paid off and dump onto someone else.

@@manybikes "For what it is... ( the 2019 version ) other than suspension and a skid plate," You just proved my point. The Rally Raid upgrade is directed at the suspension of the bike (for the most part). To bring it up to par with what honda should have done in the first place. So your throwing another 3K to get the bike where it should be, as you admitted in your quote. In 2019 Honda "changed" the CB 500X for a reason,,, to supposedly make it MORE of a ADV bike. All they did was change a few graphics, a taller front wheel (what it should have in the first place) and something with the clutch to make it easier to squeeze. The bike is a fine bike, with Honda quality, but its not a ADV bike off the show room floor. The stock tires tells you that. Again its a fine bike for what it is, But why would another company (RR) make upgraded parts to get it what it was advertised as?

@@mrspookydog The CB500x is around 50% the price of the Africa Twin. You can upgrade it via rally raid for anything between $1 to 3000 depending on your desired spec.
