I just had major heart surgery, open chest. I chose China where I live part time, over my native Australia, because the Australian hospitals are kept so super clean that staph infections are rampant as super tough strains have developed from being killed so often. There's always 2 sides to every story, and as long as an operating ward is super clean (duh), there's no big problem how the rest of the hospital is.

I don't hear him complaining at all. He's just painting a picture of what happened, right? Obviously he isn't going to recommend getting elective surgery in a desert hospital in Bolivia, but he is also going to be honest about his experience.

Love Toby and everything he does but let’s put this into perspective: this is the Dakar. This isn’t Supercross or Erzberg or Roof of Africa. It a navigation test adventure rally. The tradition of this race is that you are on your own against the terrain. In Africa, competitors were lost for days, no-one had any idea where they were, some were never seen again. If you crashed or got stuck, you knew you had no-one to rely on but yourself. If help arrived you were lucky. Of course, it’s a whole different event now. This is a different era and thank god we have technology to make it safer for guys like Toby who are our heroes, true gladiators. But the edge of real danger is always there so the answer is to keep perspective and try to get the balance right.

I also broke my femur on my dirtbike. Turns out it's an easy bone to fix, within 3 and a half months I could run and jump again . Now over a year later I can't even tell it has ever been broken. I even got the crash on my go pro lol still want to delete the video but I can't

Complain about medical circumstances if you are in a situation that is not your fault, complaining when you willing participating in the toughest race on earth is a different story. If you are unhappy about the service you are getting do not enter as simple as that. I will never understand people complaining about there situation if you yourself are the reason you are there!? There are 400+ competitors over a 9000 kilometers race, surely everybody cannot get there own chopper!

All 400+ entrants have the chopper services for the race, it's a part of your entry fee. Not sure he's complaining, but no excuse for Toby to go back, as he has, if he doesn't accept the way it is.

Price seems to be doing ok since he won the Dakar and regardless of the resources they had at Bolivia I think he owes the people that helped him a big thanks! Which I never heard, just bitching about the conditions, although irrelevant you(Price) have lost my respect.

Hey Tobi, you take a lot of risk racing the way you do and by now you should be aware of that, but you don't even have a "thank you" for the doctors who saved your leg, possibly even your life? Pretty poor performance. I bet they could have easily done without you that day, rocking up with your broken femur - ever thought of that? Lots for you to learn mate! And by the way, is your Spanish as good as the doctors English? How disappointing.

matthias, don't blame Toby entirely, the arrogance is pretty much ingrained into Australian culture, Americans are far worse. "best countries in the world" - said by any Australian or American who has never lived anywhere else. Toby didn't mention the horrendous waiting lists and costs for Australian hospitals, not to mention one of the worst incidence of staph infections in the world. Walk into Australian Emergency and wait 6 to 12 hours is nothing new, i walk into "3rd world" Chinese hospitals and get seen in minutes, and the medications are dirt cheap.
