A mate of mine went off a drop off at least 3 times as deep as that at full noise on my RM250t which I bought of my brother, he is built like a tank and he folded the handle bars down and 4 guys couldn't get them back up. when the bike hit the sand it just stopped, it basically dropped straight down from outer space. he landed over a hundred feet from where his tire tracks ended, the bike was still standing up in the sand when we got to the site, we all heard the bike stop because he was only 500 yards from our camp. he didn't have a bike and was really keen to ride in the sand and just took off like a mad thang, he was very careful for the rest of the long weekend :)

Whether you win on your own or because the other guy crashes , everyone takes the same chance and the roles could have been reversed. That being said you always want to beat your competitors fair and square, it makes the win that much better.
