ℹ️About the episode:
Somewhere in Alaska, a few subscribers suggested that we get the Ford F450. Then the joke was made, if Marc gets the F450 then Trish gets a dog... it was fun to keep the joke alive, but it proves that what we think about most shows up in our life.
The 2019 Ford F450 is our dream truck. The wide track front axle not only provides a tighter turning radius but gives the truck an aggressive look and balances the wide backend. This episode was a lot of fun to share, but we're even more excited about what we're going to learn that we can pass onto you. Join us in the next episode to see what monster this F450 will be pulling!
We mentioned in the last episode the idea of changing rigs more often, possibly even per season if it's sustainable. With the boys getting bigger and Carson going off to school in August, this is our window to go big. Plus, our Season 7 route is mostly Interstate driving with few National Parks.

We mentioned our first aid kit in this video amzn.to/2EOvFQn There were a few other comments in the video that were edited out due to time that I'm able to include here. We intentionally keep our first aid kit in the truck. If we had a motorized RV with a towable vehicle, we'd keep it in the tow vehicle. The point being is... our truck is always with us and our trailer is not. Last summer Caleb was microwaving hot teriyaki sauce in a plastic bowl. As he was removing the bowl from the microwave, he flinched from the hot bowl spilling the sauce on his hand. It resulted in a third-degree burn (and excuse the graphic description), his skin melted off his hand. I quickly went to the truck to see if there was burn treatment in the kit listed above and sure enough there was a burn gel pad. We applied it within seconds and then went to the emergency room. One month later there was no scare to be seen. Even our doctor was impressed with how it healed and complimented our quick action and having the right treatment on hand. Had this happened in Alaska, there would be no emergency room for hundreds of miles. As stated in the video, the chances of coming across a traveling nurse, EMT or medical profession is very likely. It's important to have the tools they need to help you. Yes, this first responders kit is more than average, but it's an essential item in our RV gear. If you don't buy this one, take the time to evaluate your first aid kit and purchase the missing items.

As a Family Nurse Practitioner, I endorse having a quality first aid kit for the reasons you mention. You never know when it will come in handy. One suggestion would be to check it periodically for expired products that need to be replaced. Love your videos! We are hopeful about making our dreams a reality one day.

Keep Your Daydream As a retired wound care nurse I keep 4 different first aid kits in my truck. I have some other duplicates in my trailer as well. If i need to respond to a fellow camper and they are fully stocked, that’s bonus. I have learned though to stock it myself. Some of the bandaids in premade kits are horrible.

Kudos to all who upgrade their first aid kits. :)peace PS: Some items should pertain to what activities you are doing. a rock climber has no need for jelly fish anti sting. :) peace

You are right about carrying tools you can't use. I'm a 72 year old solo female and two years ago had a blowout on the 5er on an interstate. The AAA tow truck driver had everything except the right size socket for the lug nuts. I KNEW that socket was so important, I kept it in the silverware drawer and handed it to him in less than 30 seconds after he said he had to go into town to get the right size socket. My RV mentor a few years before that had told me to buy that special size and keep it because he knew my wheels required an odd size!

I did all this rationalization between the two (350-450) and the numbers pointed to the 350. 350 and 450 towing capacity are so close...the 350 payload is higher......the cost favors the 350.....options favors 350.....the 450 with most insurance companies rate you at the commercial vehicle level etc etc. 450 you get the better turning radius 🤷🏻‍♂️. Having said that....when paying 70-80k on a truck.....at the end of the day, get the truck that makes you happy. You can’t go wrong with either F350 or F450. Best trucks on the road!

That's probably 70-80k worth of truck. I'd never put that kinda money in a truck, purely out of stubbornness and defiance. Trucks used to be all about work, and were half the price of the cheapest sedan, now they're all about luxury and are twice or three times the cost of the most expensive sedan. For them it makes sense though; the truck, and if they get a fifth wheel, would be the cost equivalent of an average house. I just couldn't do it, I'd feel like I was contributing to the insanity of the modern truck concept.

I went through a similar procedure before purchasing our F-350 DRW diesel to pull our 14,500 lb GVWR 5th Wheel. I also subscribe to BTBRV and was delighted to see the connection and acknowledgement between you guys and JD. I was aware of his disdain for the turning radius of the F-350 and so I watched for that specifically as I took my test drives. Frankly, the turning radius on the F-350 was no worse than I would have expected from a 22 foot long DRW pick-up. What REALLY bothered my was the larger wheels and rough ride (as you experienced) on the F-450. I figured that the rougher ride and larger wheels were more of an issue on longer hauls than the turning radius would be so I bought the F-350 with no regrets. I have come to love it more and more every day, and really have not run into any problems because of the turning radius. Had I known about the cost to replace those 6 tires on the F-450, that would have made my decision even easier! Love your posts BTW and will be sincerely interested in your continued upgrades and improvements to both your vehicle as well as your (suspected at this point) new toy-hauler. I suspect my suspicions will be proven in a few minutes with this week's episode! Looking forward to it.

Don’t tell Trish, but retrofitting upfitter switches on your truck is a fairly straight forward process with a couple factory harnesses and a proper overhead console that matches your trim + upfitter switches. Then you can put that train horn in.

12:36 Straight out of central casting with these finance guys, with the multiple pictures of junior and missy in their sports uniforms on the wall. It's almost stereotypical enough to be laughable it if weren't so sad. How many times have any of us sat for the multi-hours financing ordeal, designed LITERALLY to wear people down, while little Ashley Nicole and Brenden look down not knowing daddy provides everything for them by basically doing sleight-of-hand with figures and paperwork to absolutely ensure you are parted with as much money as possible. Sure, it's business, and money, and that's the way the world turns, but it is irrefutable that car dealership financing personnel will out-and-out lie at some point if not multiple points during the transaction. I'm NOT saying a dealership shouldn't make money, or money is evil, but it's the lies, soft or hard. Anyone who thinks otherwise is utterly naive. If you're (not meaning KYD by "you're" just meaning any of us) OK with that, or if you think "Hey what can you do, it's the way it goes, it wasn't too bad" then fine, but it's the truth. I've taken my lumps twice with new car financing but have walked away twice. There are countless articles and videos on the ugly truths of dealership tactics and the practices are industry-wide. They're bad and there is almost no avoiding those tactics.

Anthony C Our finance guy was pushing their undercoating and was describing how clean it was compared to the “oily mess” that the competitors use. Then, from under his desk blotter, he pulled out a picture, on an 8x10 sheet of paper (assuming the original was too precious to risk damaging), of the back of a white car, that had black oily marks along the trunk edge and lock. I called him out that the car in the picture was obviously a driveway job of a guy who sprayed used motor oil all over the bottom of his car. It was NOT the work of one of the rust proofing companies. He didn’t say a whole lot in defense.

Like J.D. said tires are an issue. Even with the simulators JD recommended there's always a bounce. The best tires I found for our F450 are the Cooper road master 253 M/S Size 245 load rang H. You'll find that size fixes the 10% off from Fords factory. Cooper offers 2 different tred patterns with the same part number. I run the aggressive tred on the front and the slightly less aggressive on the dullys. I'm averaging about 25000 on a set. On Nittos they chunked at about 12,000 and Nitto would not warranty because of the commercial ratings. And Kumo only got about 17000 and they were all on the wear bars. If you want to keep the horns, consider a foot switch. We have them on the fire trucks, there great, unless you forget to tell the valet in Vegas. You can find them on Ebay for about $20-30. Our Lariat has ac and heat seats, controlled on the touch screen. I think you'll find the more you tow, especially if there's a big toy hauler in your future, there really is no other option. Our total weight (Grand Designs 33rl) is just under 26,000lbs and we really only fill it on long steep grades, then we slow to around 72-74 mph

In GA, we are required to have a class E license (non-commercial Class A) for any trailer with a GVWR of 10,001lbs or more, regardless of the 26k. That's even with my Ag exemption.

How did you guys manage breaking it in before towing? Most trucks require 1000km to 1500km before you should tow with it.
@geraldhenrickson7472
@geraldhenrickson7472 5 жыл бұрын
Nope. That was then, this is now. The engines today are not the same as when your dad bought a new vehicle. Many in the industry agree a 100 miles is enough and many feel no special treatment is needed at all.
@UberSpieler
@UberSpieler 5 жыл бұрын
@@geraldhenrickson7472 I don't think that is the case. Although break-in periods are definitely shorter then they use to be, a break-in period is still recommended. For example my brand new Ram 2019 Sport has a 500KM engine break-in period and a 805KM minimum before towing anything with it, and then recommends an additional 805km until 'normal' towing. This is straight out of the owners manual. BTW break-in is not just about the engine, it is about the entire truck, including the tires.

OK, It's now a real show. No more wimpy 1/2 tons we have progressed into the real men's truck. I love it and the fact that we have moved beyond the moon roof, make up mirror stuff just gives me hope for the next season. Now for the aftermarket air compressor. How about some suggestion about air horns. Life is good. Congratz guys and best of luck with the new 450

Look at Link or Kelderman suspension for the rear. I had an F550 with a 5th. I posted in your previous video. There are dealers in Florida. Made the 550 ride just right empty or towing. Also, kept truck level, and made hitching/unhitching super easy. Trust me. I was very satisifed with the Link brand

Good for you Marc...you'll love the truck...and 450 HP, should pull with ease, when in the mountain country of U.S & Canada! You may remember from our 'meet up' in Vancouver, my F450 King Ranch, and yes the turning radius is superb! It just comes in handy so darn often, and any vibration you've felt may be from the rear lug tires, and yes...less flex than the smaller tire sizes, but more flexing. Once you get hooked up, the ride should settle in quite nicely. I also added airbags to my F450 for the additional ability in raising/lowering the rear. One thing you should do is check out what we call 'the pumpkin' (rear differential carrier) and see the size of it, compared to your F250...it will be nice to see Marc's 'add-on's' coming up in the next season or two on the truck! Look forward to seeing the whole rig all set up, and your reviews in upcoming video's! Cheers to you both, and happy travels to you all!

Speaking of tools, an engine-driven (York) air compressor and Viair air tank are two of the best mods I’ve done to my Jeep. Not only does it make airing up large tires a snap, it’s more than a little cool to be able to break out the air tools (like an impact wrench) on the side of the trail/road.

Great choice on the F450. Having a F350 dually, I would appreciate the turning radius of the F450 many times over. For your outfitters switch dilemma, try MLC-6 (70955) multiple light controller offered by Rough Country. May fit the bill Enjoy

Enjoy it it’s a wonderful truck. I know because I own the same truck. It tows awesome. However I am not a big fan of sunroofs on a pick up truck. I don’t have one. And yes it rides stiff. It’s the tires because of the steel side walls. Mine rides the same.

Hey guys! First, great video and congrats on the new rig! My suggestion for you guys would be to go to your DMV in Arizona and pick up a CDL practice book. It has a ton of information on towing, pre-trip inspections, and what to look for. When I got my Class A CDL, it definitely changed the way I drove and made me realize how a good pre-trip can minimize potential dangers. Cheers guys! KYD 🤘

We bought our first RV a few months ago - a 2019 DRV Mobile Suites 36 RSSB3 - as well as our first truck, which wound up being a 2019 Ford F350. I researched as much as I could before pulling the trigger, but I'm wondering if maybe I should have gone with an F450 vs the F350, mainly because of turning radius. I had heard from a couple people that insuring a 450 could be a different animal than insuring a 350 (something about some insurance companies considering the 450 to be a commercial truck or something along those lines). Our F350 is a beautiful beast, and I paid enough that I won't be considering a change anytime soon! We went from a Toyota RAV4 to the F350; the first time I hit the slightest little bump in the highway with the unloaded 350, I thought we were going to hit the roof of the truck!! We named our truck "Samson" and our RV "Delilah". Love your videos, guys.

A reblance by the dealer might solve the issue or the tires could have been flat spotting from sitting. It might go away on a long hot drive. Also, new vehicle often come with whatever tires the manufacturer could get the best deal on. Hopefully its not the latter.

Great video! I am at the crossroads of choosing a truck, and it's overwhelming because ultimately they all are pretty similar in terms of power delivery, but there are so many other issues to consider such as braking, suspension, turning radius and so on. I can't wait for you guys to reveal your new 5th wheel. I am a project manager, and work around the country, and I am hopefully going full-time at the end of 2019/early 2020, and I will be going with a 5th wheel as well. The rigs I am looking closely at (LUXE 42md and Luxe toyhauler--both have dedicated office space areas) have a GVWR of 24,000 so I will definitely be looking at F450 and Ram 3500 as options. What kept you from considering the Ram 3500 with the max tow package (air suspension)? Is it the turning radius, suspension, and brakes of the F450 that attracted you? Will you be adding a rear air suspension to the F450? Anyways, I am a subscriber and will be staying tuned as you guys move forward because you provide such wonderful commentary into full-time life. Looking forward to more great videos!
