I just picked up an Alltrack with only 17k miles and two things I've noticed. First, after driving it for a while, the engine seems pretty hot although the temperature gauge is normal. Second,, I smell what seems like a faint smell of maybe anti-freeze. I have never owned a Volkswagen so not sure if this is normal. Any thoughts?

So I noticed the same thing, this is also my first VW. Occasionally I get a faint coolant smell outside the car, I think this is just from the expansion tank. Newer cars tend to run a bit hotter for emissions I believe, also you’ve got a turbo under there heating stuff up. As long as that temp gauge stays at the half way mark, you’re probably fine.

@@AutoOffTopic both your cars having a very slow leak at the waterpump, thermostat assembly if you are slowly losing coolant and smell it but don’t see any puddles. These waterpump assembly are 100% plastic and have been revised over 7 times so far. If you can see dried coolant around the assembly, then it’s leaking. Also running “hot” is just a normal thing for turbocharged German cars.
