I love this 5th Wheel, though I would call that more 'glamping' than 'camping'; you've got everything you need, including amenities, at your fingertips. I do love that it not only has a bunkroom for the children, but a loft, too, enabling you to sleep more people. Great walk-through!

Nice! The wife and I are seriously looking at the Solitude product line but a different model. I've heard elsewhere that keeping a pizza stone in the oven will help evenly distribute the heat and stop burning everything. Enjoy your travels!

Love the layout of your camper! We have a Class-C camper, with windows around our heads too (our headboard isn't as tall) ... we would love to go to a towable (travel trailer or 5th wheel), but we haven't found windows in the bedroom like we have. Yours is the closest ... love the bunkroom! Thank you for taking the time to make the video and sharing!

Peggy Fullbright glad you like it! You’re right - those windows and that space are hard to find. It’s one of the main reasons we went with a fifth wheel over a travel trailer. I know this is ostentatious for a camper, but I couldn’t do some of the tight spaces in the bedroom. There are a few other Solitudes that have similar windows...try looking at other plans on their website to see what all is available. I’m of course partial to this one with the midbunk, but there are several awesome options without it.

Thanks so much for the great reply. I know you are right. We have had several duallies and can look at again. Just would prefer a SRW. We may wind up buying a Pusher or Super C and tow a 1500 Denali. Was thinking about the 5th Wheel to save a little upfront money. We do hope you have safe trips and God Bless You and Family!! Maybe we will meet each other in the future and break bread.

We have a 2019 Grand Design Solitude 344 with the light colored leather also. We're snowbirds so have put 12,000 miles on it since we picked it up in May. We love it! Very pleased with Grand Design but not with Lazy Days dealer in Tampa where we bought it. Maybe we'll run into you folks at a GD rally some day. Safe travels!

That’s absolutely beautiful! I love that mod room where your daughter was.. I would put a TV in there and I’m surprised there is no tv in the bedroom! I was cringing a little when you were slamming all the cabinets shut, be easy on them! (Maybe just my OCD!) but overall one of the best fifth wheel floor plans I’ve seen yet!
@joyinthejourney5480
@joyinthejourney5480 6 жыл бұрын
I'll be more careful :) We love the extra room, too. It's prepped for a TV, but it doesn't come with one. It's such a versatile space - I've seen lots of people use it as a nursery where they take out the desk and put in more cabinets OR people who use it for an office and put a computer there. Because of that, I'm kind of glad it doesn't come standard to keep costs down. It really is a great plan - there is little privacy if you have more than a couple in an RV, and RVing is all about community. I just don't want to get THAT close to my friends and family that come with us :)

Congrats. We have the same model but 2017 year. Put 10k miles on it with a cross country and worked through some of the new rig bugs. The midbunk does stay warmer due to limited airflow. Recommend you upgrade the Chinese tires before traveling far. Also recommend adding shocks to suspension as this is a heavy rig for just Springs. We already experienced a busted leaf spring. Let us know if you have any other questions
@joyinthejourney5480
@joyinthejourney5480 6 жыл бұрын
Oh wow! A cross country trip is our dream!!! Thanks for the other advice! We are keeping a very close watch on tire pressure and the miles driven on our tires. Currently, we only have trips planned within a few hours of us, but we are hoping to upgrade tires, springs, etc. probably some time next year. Will look into shocks as well. How scary was it when the leaf busted? That or a tire blowout are my biggest worries while travelling, especially with our girls.
@331drummer
@331drummer 6 жыл бұрын
Fortunately the spring broke as we hit a pothole on the gravel road to our house so we were able to limp into the driveway. But after researching the problem as others experienced also it convinced me to add shocks to minimize porpoising and rough ride on bad roads (aka Louisiana and Mississippi). For tires I recommend Goodyear G614 G rated with a good TPMS. They’re $300 each but the best you can buy and worth the peace of mind. Don’t believe the dealer as all the Chinese tires these things come with are crap. You pay that much for a rig, good tires are the best upgrade you could make to protect it.

331drummer glad it wasn't worse! And youd think for what we pay for it, we would have good tires, at least. Thanks for the recommendation!

Thank you for your video tour of your fifth wheel!! We are thinking of buying this model, but the ones we have looked at have the fold down bunk above the tri-fold sofa in the bunk room. We like your bunk room with no fold down bunk, because the window is not covered up. Did your fifth wheel just come this way or where you able to request no fold down bunk? Also, now that it looks like you've had your fifth wheel for close to 2 years, is there anything you would do differently? We are looking at buying this exact one and would love your feedback!! Look forward to hearing back from you!

Heather Laire interesting! We just sweep and throw away the dirt once a day or so. May look into adding it, though! We gave up on the trash can it came with - too small. We had to empty it often and our dog could get in it. We purchased a regular size one and have it next to the island towards the tv. Its mostly hidden and out of the way.

Great video. I have been looking at a 377 for sometime but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Also I love the light colored furniture. I currently have a 2016 Reflection. This was at Sawnee at Lake Lanier. Great COE campground. Wish it had full hook ups and it had TONS of ants, but the view was worth it! I love the light furniture, too. I'm not a fan of all the dark brown, and now I've added throws and pillows to add color. I can thank my husband for doing his research on Grand Design. He knew from almost the beginning to look at the brand because of their story and the customer service. We've been very happy so far, and we've been lucky not to have many issues. I'm glad he did his homework on the industry. Happy camping to you, too!

Just found your excellent review. Now that a year has passed, what new comments do you have about the unit? Do you find the space for food prep is adequate? No space on the sides of the stove and lots of movement seems to be necessary between frig and counter space on the other side of the sinks. Have you found ways to cool the bunk room? For us, the 'kiddos' are all gone; now it is grandkids space or probably a sewing room for the wife. Still feel like plenty of storage space?
@joyinthejourney5480
@joyinthejourney5480 4 жыл бұрын
We've always had plenty of space for food prep, but we don't cook elaborate meals while camping. We just keep the sink cover and do all food prep on the island. We use the counterspace on the buffet for non-food stuff like keys and campground info. I find I run out of room more when washing dishes - I run out of space then if I want anything to air dry. Have to dry it and put it away pretty quickly. Not a huge problem, but just takes some time after dinner. We keep a fan in the bunk room for the kids, and they rarely use their comforter. It seems to work for them. They really only use it to sleep and are outside most of the time, so we don't notice it during the day as we're not using it.

We noticed a huge improvement with the DRW over SRW. We have an Andersen hitch. Very easy to use and take out when we're not towing, as we're weekenders and not fulltimers.

You certainly jumped right in to rving and videoing, which is fine. My questions were, where do you have the trash can (silly as it sounds it takes up floor space and some models have great pull outs) and why not get the bunk bed in the bunk room (was it available)? What you think is (wood) trim is in reality particleboard with a every thin finish. And, it is stapled together with very short staples. So disappointed in Grand Design Solitude as it is supposed to be a better built product. Bought my 2018 MB377 used and is in good shape. I HOPE IT HOLDS UP.

My Wife and I are planning on buying a 5th Wheel like yours or a used Pusher. I really like the GDesign you have with the bunk room. We normally run duramax SRW and have had DRW as well. But I do not want another Dually and GMC does not have a 3500 SRW truck. SO if we buy a 5th Wheel like yours, do you think a F350 SRW Ford LWB will be safe with a 41ft 5th? I do have a massive amount of towing experience with heavy tags and goose necks/5ths. So the driving part is fine, but do you think the SRW F350 may get pushed around to much in windy conditions? Also we will not be Fulltime. We will be taking 2wk to 3 month trips. Thanks for your insight!! AND GREAT LOOKING RIG!!!! Have a blessed day!!
@jodydavis302
@jodydavis302 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the comment. GMC does have a SRW 3500, you just have to look around for one. I also looked at the F350 as well but couldn't get any of the local Ford dealers to come off enough on MSRP. The lariat versions were pushing 72-73k and I ended up getting a loaded GMC Denali for 9k off plus decent trade in value for my 07 f350 SRW. So, for me it had to do with the 07 F350 and the 6.0 Powerstroke just struggling to pull the camper. I was right at max tow and every time i towed the check engine light would come on and I just wasn't comfortable being that close on numbers. As for the SRW vs DRW debate it all has to do with PAYLOAD not TOW CAPACITY. Does a SRW F350 have the tow capacity to handle this trailer....YES. I see people towing all the time with 3500. Does it Have the Payload capacity for the 5th wheel hitch. NO. If you go and look at the door stickers for the F350 /GMC sierra SRW the payload is around 3-3300k. Well, from the factory the 377mbs hitch weight is 2750. Once you add fuel, passengers, kayaks, gear, and load your camper you will be over the 3300k easily on the SRW trucks or right at capacity. Can the truck still tow it? probably. But if you ever got in a wreck, you would be liable if they determined you exceeded your payload capacity for your truck. The GVWR for a 2019 377mbs is 16800, that is max weight but 20% hitch weight is 3360lbs so your basically exceeded payload already on a single wheel already. Add in a spouse, kids, gear and you are way over. My GMC Sierra has a payload of 4500lbs so I have at least 1000lbs spare of payload if my camper is maxed out on weight. I have not towed in adverse conditions yet, but i have heard that having a DRW adds much more stability. I will find out in a few weeks when i head down to tallahassee for a football game and the Semi's are passing me on the interstate. Hope this helps, just go test drive a new f350 and while your there look on the door jamb for the payload number. That will tell you all you need to know. And that's what gets me with Ford/GMC/Dodge's marketing about I can tow 25k....no you really can't unless you get a stripped down model. All the higher trims add a lot of weight and drive payload DOWN.

Also, I can say use the heck out of this thing for the first year! My parents bought a brand new 35’ class A Motorhome and then never used it.. by the time they got to it a few things like the microwave was making an noise and the warranty was already gone.. they spent over a hundred grand on a rig that has been used maybe a couple times and other than that just sits but their biggest regret (besides buying the thing in the first place and not using it) was not using it at first to work out the bugs..

Oh absolutely! Thanks for the tip. Since we're not full-timers, this is something that does worry me - both not using it and not finding all the kinks early on. We've already had several trips and are aiming for one a month (except maybe winter), and we've tried to use everything on the rig to find any issues (we also did a very thorough PDI). Our biggest reason for getting an RV was to have intentional family time where we're not at home and can explore together. We did book a few too many trips right away and have figured out one a month is good for us. We have longer trips booked for school breaks - looking forward to October and fall break :)

The bedroom has plenty of privacy. Our girls sleep in the bunk, though, and it's hard to get them to sleep sometimes. We've woken them up playing cards. I got a tension rod that goes to at least 96" and a privacy curtain to help with that issue. You could do either a TV or a computer, but I think it may be tight to do both depending on size. I've seen several people just mount a computer screen and use it for both. We're weekenders, so we just keep our laptops in the living area. The bunk room tends to get taken over by toys :)

Your video points us in the right direction now. How long did it take to get your unit??? Did you work with a dealership at all or just online??? Thanks again and looking forward to your answers.

Linda Rout Glad our video helped you! We do love the plan. We ordered it through Northgate RV in Ringgold, GA. Since we knew what we wanted, we negotiated and ordered via phone and email. It took about 2 months from starting that process to picking up the rig. We could have gotten it a little sooner, but my father passed away unexpectedly and it held us up. The dealership was very gracious about holding it until we could get there.

The more I see Grand Design, the more I'm thinking they're the brand to buy. Do you mind if I ask what you ended up paying for it? I know that private so no worries if you'd rather not say. Does the loft above the mid bunk get hot? And do you suppose it would hold a full size male? Is there a place for a TV in the bedroom? I assume there is, but I didn't see it in your tour. And can you open the refrigerator door when the slide is closed? I want to be able to stop at a rest area, make lunch and then get moving again. Did this coach come with the good stairs or did you upgrade them? Sorry...so many questions. We're looking at buying in the spring maybe and that coach has almost everything we're looking for.
@joyinthejourney5480
@joyinthejourney5480 6 жыл бұрын
We got 28% off MSRP, but that included the slide toppers, our hitch, a washer/dryer combo, heat pump, back up camera, and some accessories. The stairs are included. Also, all models from here on out include better Thomas Payne chairs, central vac, and a hitch on the back. The bunk does get warm, but the girls have a fan and it’s fine. It’s rated for 300 lbs. it’d be tight height wise for an adult, but I’ve climbed up there and been okay. There is a place for a TV in the midbunk and the loft, you just have to add them yourself. You can open the right side of the fridge with the slide in, but you’d have to open the table slide at least a little to get to it. Three of the slides are on the same button to slide out, but there is a switch near the propane tank where you can disable the others to not extend. No worries on the questions. That’s why we did this. We couldn’t find the answers we wanted ahead of time. Hope you’re able to get it and enjoy it!

Hey Guys - great looking rig. Laughing as in AUG 2017 we had a group camp there and that was OUR exact spot along with several sites beside that one with our friends. Are you from that area? We use to live 1 mile from that park. Some of the friends we had lived across the street from us so it was a little work to convince them to come camp 1 mile from their house. That space was tight even for my 30ft TT on the sides being a curved pull thru site. We now live in Savannah, GA.

We live close by, and maybe I'm weird, but I like camping close to home. Our family is very active during the summer, so we can camp while not missing practices or any of the girls' activities. The space was TIGHT! For our first campsite, we picked a doozie! It took a few tries to get the camper where it needed to be thanks to the curve and a tree. We ended up with less than an inch of space between the tree and our slide!

One of the features I don’t like, three slides work off one button but in series. So the mid-bunk opens first, then the door side and finally the appliances side. So if you just want to get into the fridge you have to wait for the other two slides to open first before the slide with the fridge. Beware the breaker on this circuit is also slightly undersized. Ours failed on us after one year and we had to jump the breaker to put the slides back in just to get it to the dealer for warranty replacement.

JRFamily Life We have a new GMC Sierra 3500 DRW Duramax. We had a 2007 SRW Ford but it was giving us issues and we were worried about the longer trips we have planned, so we switched. We looked at all the midbunks we could find, but Palomino is one I have never seen around us. We looked at the Reflection version, a Montana, a Jayco North Point, and several others. What I liked most about the Solitude is the company quality and the way the door to the midbunk is not in the kitchen. That gives much more counter space and storage that most of the others didn’t have. Also, the reason we wanted the midbunk is for our kids, as no plan without it had enough storage for all our clothes and we wanted them to have a dedicated space so we could still use the living room after they go to bed. The others didn’t put as much storage in the midbunk, which makes it less useful for what we plan to use it for.

@joyinthejourney5480
@joyinthejourney5480 6 жыл бұрын
Jason, the we had an 2007 F350 and we were already borderline on weight when we bought the 5th Wheel. Every time we pulled the camper something would happen, like the CAC tube blowing off or the Check Engine coming and then needing to get it fixed. In the end he decided this rig just was too big for a SRW so we upgraded to a DRW truck. He wasn't brand partial, he actually liked the new Ford's better but there were hardly any 18' F-350 DRW's left and the dealerships just wouldn't cut any deals. We got just a overall better deal on the 18' Sierra 3500 so we pulled the trigger.

I have the same unit only 2017 model which has the thermostat in the mid-bunk. That means you freeze out the living area trying to cool the bunk room. I see the newer models put the thermostat facing the kitchen. Doesn’t fix the problem though as mid-bunk only has one AC vent that doesn’t provide enough airflow. We put a small fan in the mid-bunk when someone uses the pullout couch to sleep.

Loved the video. We are looking at trading and are seriously considering this same camper. One question I have is how loud are the ac units. We have a heartland gateway with 2 airs and they are quite loud. It’s hard to sleep with it right above the bed. Is there a cover for the stovetop to help make a flat counter surface? Can you add a ceiling fAn? My husband wants to know how big the tv is in living?

Kay Koehlmoos the ACs aren't awful, but when we put it on auto, I wake up every time it comes on. My husband sleeps right through it. There isn't a cover for the stove, but I've used it to hold pans and bowls as is. I've heard you can add a fan (on your own) in the living room but not the bedroom. However, I dont know that I've seen anyone do this. Will look at the TV and let you know.

I have the 377 MBS-R and just run the bedroom AC all night on low. That way you don’t notice when the compressor kicks on and the constant fan kind of has the side affect of blocking outside noise. Run on auto and it wakes me up when it kicks on.

Thanks so much for the video! None of these are local but it's the one we're looking really hard at for full time living. Great to hear real life impressions from people actually using it! Especially in regards to the temperature control. If I could ask a big favor, could you take a couple of measurements for me? Specifically, in regards to the rear wall couch, how wide is it between the "side tables" and how deep is it? I'm thinking of replacing the couch with a single chair and desk and wondering what would fit. Another place for a measurement, what size bench/ottoman would fit to replace the two dining chairs nearest the door? I'm thinking of putting a bench there to hopefully contain the cat litter box. Final place I'm curious about measurement, what is the width of the spot for the TV? I know it's on a swing arm, but I'm wondering how big a TV I could work in there at a funky angle with the slide closed, lol! Again, thanks so much for the video! Any regrets or anything else you wish you'd known before you purchased?
@joyinthejourney5480
@joyinthejourney5480 6 жыл бұрын
Jody is getting you the measurements, but as for regrets, not really. Except buying a bath mat that has white in it. Not a good idea! I think the only hard part is that we LOVE how big it is, but it's BIG, which means it's hard to find good sites at COE or state parks. We have to plan more in advance, but that's something we can easily do. I love all the storage. We talked about getting the outdoor kitchen option, and I'm glad we didn't. I like the extra storage space, and instead of spending over $1k for that option, we spent around $200 to get a grill and a table with a sink and faucet that hooks up to a hose. One last thing: we knew what we wanted and ordered it. However, I didn't know that we couldn't do a bike rack on the back bumper - voids the warranty if we do. It's a small issue now, but we're hoping to buy kayaks for Christmas, and that'll add some fun to packing. All the late model 2019s will have a place to put a bike rack.
@UntoldGlory
@UntoldGlory 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response and for working on those measurements! So since you ordered one specifically, did you have to pay MSRP? I know that's a pretty huge difference compared to some of the prices I could get by driving to a dealer that already has one on the lot.
@joyinthejourney5480
@joyinthejourney5480 6 жыл бұрын
No. We negotiated close to 30% off MSRP. They included the back up camera, slide toppers, heat pump, and the hitch in what we paid. The best part was that since we knew what we wanted and it wasn't on the lot, we did all the negotiating over the phone or through email. Didn't have to sit in dealership for hours.
@joyinthejourney5480
@joyinthejourney5480 6 жыл бұрын
We have measurements! For the ottoman at the dining table, you have 4 ft from the slide wall to the edge of the carpet and 22" from the wall to the table. The back couch is 84" wide and you have 39" before the slides would hit anything depth-wise. The TV space is 39". The TV that comes with it is 40" but a 43" might do. Not sure if you do it angled.

@joyinthejourney5480
@joyinthejourney5480 6 жыл бұрын
rebbo02 from what I’ve seen online, it is one design flaw. There isn’t much of a dedicated vent going in the room - from videos and pictures I’ve seen, the vent in the room is just connected to the loft above. Several who use it as a bedroom regularly have put in a fan in the vent to get more air circulating. We haven’t done that yet because our girls aren’t using it. They have a fan in the loft because it gets hot up there, too.

Mainly due to the slide. It exposes some of the top, bottom and a bit of sidewall, which typically do not have the same insulation. Usually not too much of a temp swing if you get a high-quality build like this one or the Highland Ridge Open Range 371MB
