Little trick for removing oil from filter without making a mess. Take a long skinny Philip's head screw driver, place it at the bottom edge face of the the filter, and tap it with a hammer to puncture. This way most if not all oil comes out further away from motor onto the oil slide. Learned this from an older Harley owner. Great trick no mess!!

I recommend you follow the manufacturer service schedule listed in your owners manual. There is a lot more to the 1000 mile service than just changing the oil,. And yes, you do need to replace your transmission fluid at 1000 miles, not 1800, or “down the road.”
@davethemmp37635 жыл бұрын
Good comments on riding the bike before dropping the old oil, there are two really good reasons for this when you idle the bike the engine never produces enough oil pressure to evacuate the oil that sits at the bottom of the crankcase and cam chest, you really need to ride the bike to produce enough oil pressure to do this.
@derickwalker36843 жыл бұрын
Absolutely true. Ride until reach operating temp. Even 5 min ride around the neighborhood should suffice. Can’t do the oil changes on a cold engine.
@tax9059725 жыл бұрын
You should be riding it till the oil reaches operating temperature.
@paulrevere43264 жыл бұрын
You are suppose to fill the primary with the bike standing up off the jiffy stand. That's why it didn't take all the fluid. So, you are running a bit low in the primary now.

Great video.. (if in range before the change) volume out should = volume back in as even hot the oil never fully drains out of cooler, cooler lines/top end supply lines and cam chest, so if you drain and automatically add 4.5 quarts you may be over filled which is worse than slightly under filled and can cause sumping…if you have a big bore kit or something special follow your builder’s recommendations.

@sherminl12842 жыл бұрын
I believe on the first 1000 miles as I've been told when you bring the bike in Harley drains the fluids and measures each drainage. Reason they do that is to see if there is any sumping, oil going over to the other cavity. When that happens they do have a fix for that to relieve some of the pressure in the motor.
@maccam265 жыл бұрын
1000 miles is the first interval
@Skeetersbuzz5 жыл бұрын
You should have opened the derby cover first before draining the primary, for 2 reasons: 1. in case a bolt strips out or breaks (It happened to me before) at least you can start and ride the bike and 2. That allows the fluid to drain.....same as you pulled the engine dip stick out to avoid a vacuum. Second, why put oil in prior to taking the filter off? Again, to eliminate any possibility of a vacuum or new oil getting into or getting contaminated if any oil flows back from the filter area. Also, with the transfer issues, how do you know if your primary didn’t take any transfer from the tranny? You should have done the tranny at the same time to check 🤷🏻♂️

It's not a bad idea to remove the engine oil drain plug first and then remove the oil dipstick. That vacuum can tell you that your crankcase breather umbrella valves are still working. If you remove the drain plug first and there is not a vacuum it could mean they are bad and need to be replaced. I do this at every oil change for that reason.

Overall not a bad video man. Sure i agree with few others that you pointed out some things that were wrong and doing this type of video expect to get killed. Harley community is brutal. They wonder why they have a hard time bringing new riders. Its the fact that when someone does something wrong and not per the manual they should be executed on the spot. I personally like to do small shit. I know my limitations and wont mess with complicated crap, but changing oil while listening to good music and diking beer is right up my alley. Lastly if you have two wheels and you wrench on your bike you got my support. Every person here learned from someone else. Give him a little slack. If he fucks up he will learn from it and promise you he won't make the mistake again. Bro, Harley does not make oil, they build bikes. Harley buys their oil and puts their label on it and sells it for a nice profit. That was not the transmisión drain plug and always fill the primary with it off the jiffy stand and standing level. When it leaks from the primary when filling, it means it should not have been on the jiffy stand in the first place. I would suggest always riding it up to normal operating temp before beginning, not just let it idle for 1 minute. Ride safe.

I can think of a lot of things to do with $600 other than giving it to stealership.If I blew money like that, I wouldn't be able to afford a $30,000 bike......just saying.
