Little trick for removing oil from filter without making a mess. Take a long skinny Philip's head screw driver, place it at the bottom edge face of the the filter, and tap it with a hammer to puncture. This way most if not all oil comes out further away from motor onto the oil slide. Learned this from an older Harley owner. Great trick no mess!!

I have used the same primary gaskets that came on the bike in 2009, 118,000 miles. Never a leak. Also Harley oils rate near the bottom of ALL oil charts. Many KZbin videos on Harley oil.

I recommend you follow the manufacturer service schedule listed in your owners manual. There is a lot more to the 1000 mile service than just changing the oil,. And yes, you do need to replace your transmission fluid at 1000 miles, not 1800, or “down the road.”

Good comments on riding the bike before dropping the old oil, there are two really good reasons for this when you idle the bike the engine never produces enough oil pressure to evacuate the oil that sits at the bottom of the crankcase and cam chest, you really need to ride the bike to produce enough oil pressure to do this.
@derickwalker3684

Absolutely true. Ride until reach operating temp. Even 5 min ride around the neighborhood should suffice. Can’t do the oil changes on a cold engine.

You are suppose to fill the primary with the bike standing up off the jiffy stand. That's why it didn't take all the fluid. So, you are running a bit low in the primary now.

Great video.. (if in range before the change) volume out should = volume back in as even hot the oil never fully drains out of cooler, cooler lines/top end supply lines and cam chest, so if you drain and automatically add 4.5 quarts you may be over filled which is worse than slightly under filled and can cause sumping…if you have a big bore kit or something special follow your builder’s recommendations.

Great video....I would only suggest to loosen the derby cover bolts slightly before draining in case there is a problem with a stuck bolt. Imagine draining the primary without being able to get the derby cover off.

I believe on the first 1000 miles as I've been told when you bring the bike in Harley drains the fluids and measures each drainage. Reason they do that is to see if there is any sumping, oil going over to the other cavity. When that happens they do have a fix for that to relieve some of the pressure in the motor.

You should have opened the derby cover first before draining the primary, for 2 reasons: 1. in case a bolt strips out or breaks (It happened to me before) at least you can start and ride the bike and 2. That allows the fluid to drain.....same as you pulled the engine dip stick out to avoid a vacuum. Second, why put oil in prior to taking the filter off? Again, to eliminate any possibility of a vacuum or new oil getting into or getting contaminated if any oil flows back from the filter area. Also, with the transfer issues, how do you know if your primary didn’t take any transfer from the tranny? You should have done the tranny at the same time to check 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's not a bad idea to remove the engine oil drain plug first and then remove the oil dipstick. That vacuum can tell you that your crankcase breather umbrella valves are still working. If you remove the drain plug first and there is not a vacuum it could mean they are bad and need to be replaced. I do this at every oil change for that reason.

Overall not a bad video man. Sure i agree with few others that you pointed out some things that were wrong and doing this type of video expect to get killed. Harley community is brutal. They wonder why they have a hard time bringing new riders. Its the fact that when someone does something wrong and not per the manual they should be executed on the spot. I personally like to do small shit. I know my limitations and wont mess with complicated crap, but changing oil while listening to good music and diking beer is right up my alley. Lastly if you have two wheels and you wrench on your bike you got my support. Every person here learned from someone else. Give him a little slack. If he fucks up he will learn from it and promise you he won't make the mistake again. Now if anybody out there bought a $30k bike and has never changed an oil and looks at youtube for guidance thats a different story. Anyways. Nice scoot and ride safe brother

I just had the first service done on my 2020 fxst (1000 mi.), it cost me $607.40. That's a lot of money to check belt tension and few fasteners and do an oil change. I think when I get to 5000 mi. I'm gonna do it myself. Oh, what left a bad taste in my mouth is they billed me for 3 hrs and 30 min. labor (at $134.00/hr.) and they only had the bike for 2 hrs.

1800 miles before first change? It's your bike, but that's NOT GOOD ! I follow S&S break in procedures, which are more stringent than HD. You stand a much higher chance in the beginning of metal shavings occurring and floating around. New parts are contacting each other and "seating" into place. If you found none, consider yourself lucky.

Your process and tool handling is amateur hour. Removing a derby cover you should leave the top screw for last so the cover doesn't fall off, putting a derby cover back on without a torque wrench is a disaster waiting to happen. The amount of shavings on the transmission plug at 1800 miles or whenever you get to it will tell you that you waited too long.

I am debating on getting a new bike, not a fan of black though. I think i am going to wait another 6 weeks and see what the 2020 colours look like, i also heard that Indian is coming out with a water cooled version of the Road Glide with a frame mounted fairing. We all know that water cooled puts out substantially more power and better in stop and go traffic or those hot summer days so that may be the direction i go, but it will depend on colours. Harley does excel at colour themes but you get more for your money and a better ride with Indian.

Snake Bite they should be coming out soon and they may have the upgrades to prevent primary/transmission oil transferring.

For the transmission oil I wasn't aware bikes had actual transmissions like cars? I just bought a 18' Road Glide Ultra and still learning a lot. Is the Trans Oil easy to change or do I have to also pop off reservoirs at the handlebars like brake fluid?

Bro, Harley does not make oil, they build bikes. Harley buys their oil and puts their label on it and sells it for a nice profit. That was not the transmisión drain plug and always fill the primary with it off the jiffy stand and standing level. When it leaks from the primary when filling, it means it should not have been on the jiffy stand in the first place. I would suggest always riding it up to normal operating temp before beginning, not just let it idle for 1 minute. Ride safe.

Why are you changing to full synthetic so early, I changed my oil at 310 miles took a sample, then again at 930 miles. I’m still running drag oil until my next service at 4200 miles and all oils need to be changed especially during break in. Your gonna have a lot of problems down the road especially if anyone at Harley sees your videos. Never do the first 3 services yourself, All done at a shop if you don’t do the inspections and full services required by Harley you void your warranty. Trade your bike and buy a Honda.

A youtube instructional episode by a non expert. Always change three holes, always know your service manual, primary cover screws tightened in sequence per manual. Watch mechanic vids for proper instruction. Also, recommend using Amsoil oil, Syn3 does not show listings or what additives are in oil, so, don’t rely on crap over proven oil. Amsoil will not affect Harley warranty.

@@B.wood24 They cannot deny warranty for them not doing the oil change. That being said, they do alot more at the 1000 mile maintance interval at the dealer then was done on this video. They do many things like check air pressure in tires and transmission fluid change, hook ECM up to their computer to make check for software updates etc.
