Honestly Hyundai have stepped up their game so much in the past two decades that they’re becoming one of my favorite “normal” car brands with KIA being about the same. They pack so many features for a great price and their warranty is really great. I drove my friends Sonata 2.4 2012 (no idea what trim, seemed like middle) and it drove very well. The transmission was very responsive and had more than enough power for daily use. The interior and exterior styling were also really really nice compared to others in its class at that time. I’d honestly probably get a Hyundai or Kia if I was just going to get a normal family sedan or crossover. (The palisade or telluride are actually so cool. I would totally drive one.)

Great review. Some key points though. If you are in smart mode, it adapts automatically to your driving style. Drive sensibly, and "eco" will illuminate, floor it and it automatically will shift to "sport". You also do not have to walk straight at the hatch for it to open, and it also has two speeds, fast and normal. Rear occupant alert is also a fantastic feature, although unfortunate that we need a car to remind us that our kids or animals are left in there. The Santa Fe can also apply the brakes automatically in reverse using the rear collision avoidance assist sensors in the rear bumper. Also you can customize the HUD. Change the color, size, height, pitch, content, and all are saved into the memory seat settings for both drivers. If you haven't checked the new Santa Fe out, you really need to. It's that good.

We own a 2019 SEL+ and love it. Enough power for normal driving even in the mountains of WV. We took it on a 1500 mile trip with lots of mountains, road work, stop and go and some interstate and got mileage in the 26-27mpg range. This car is bigger than the CRV and the like. I could not get comfortable in the compact suv's since I am a big guy, 300lbs. Lots of storage room. We replaced a Honda Element after a wreck. Wife has claimed the car as hers and has put 10000 in 9 months. Has not missed a beat or had a problem. We are both retired and all the safety and convenience items on this car is fantastic. We learn something new every day. All the safety features are standard on all levels of this vehicle! Not so on the competitors. I drove all the competitors including Subaru and choose the Santa Fe. It is a solid, safe and secure vehicle. I did not want to have moon roof but liked the many of the upgrades in this level of trim, and the better mileage of the standard engine. Oh the best thing about this car is that is so quiet, near luxury level! The sound system is very good if you need noise!

Good review and an excellent entry in the "Goldilocks" (i.e. tweener) sized crossover category. However, along with every other review I've seen there's no mention that the Santa Fe is a two row, four cylinder turbo version of a Kia Sorento. Same size. (The Santa Fe is one inch shorter.) Same weight. (Oddly, the Santa Fe is a few pounds heavier.) Same passenger space in the first and second rows. Almost identical overall cargo space. Same transmission. Same suspension. Same AWD systems with the same center locking differential. Same ground clearance. Kia dropped the turbo4 from the Sorento lineup in 2018. Hyudai picked it up for the Santa Fe. Likewise, Kia dropped the two row option in 2018. The Santa Fe picks up exactly the same configuration with identical under-floor storage in the space the Kia devotes to storing the third seat row. Worth noting that the under floor storage in the Santa Fe is a nice feature but access depends on the cargo floor being empty. So it's a good place to store smaller items you don't need often but not for large items or stuff you need to access when the regular cargo space is being used. Slightly different interior materials in the Ultimate Santa Fe trim versus the KIA SX-L (The SX-L has somewhat more upscale interior materials) but the overall look and feel are nearly identical with the same infotainment screens, (though the Sorento has its screen integrated into the center stack). Same switch gear in the same places. Identical safety and driver convenience systems. (e.g. BLIS, ACC, Lane keeping, etc.) Don't need or want third row seating? Want a turbo4 engine? Take the Santa Fe. Want the same vehicle with a reasonably sized third row of seats for occasional use and think a V6 is better suited to this class of vehicle? That's the KIA Sorento. There is a price difference at the top trim levels. Not surprising since the Santa Fe is being pitched as a competitor to the CR-V and Rav4 (though it's somewhat larger than either one) while the Sorento competes against three row midsize crossovers like the CX-9, Highlander, etc. But given the typical discounts from MSRP for Kia's and Hyundai's it's unclear just how much the difference actually amounts to. All in all, each vehicle is a strong contender in the growing category of "tweener" crossovers positioned between "compact SUV's" and much larger "midsize" vehicles. Depending on one's priorities each deserves a serious look.

Stephen Hendricks When comparing the top trim levels, the Kia is quite a bit more expensive. I recently compared these cars, among others, before deciding on the 2019 Santa Fe. I got the $35,000 Ultimate that has the cooled seats, heated rear seats, head up display, pano sunroof, 360 cam, driver seat memory presets, etc. To get all of those features in the Sorento, you had to step up to the $44,000 trim. Pretty big difference. Didn’t need a 3rd row, so the $9000 difference for a V6 and nicer Nappa leather seats just wasn’t worth it.
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 6 жыл бұрын
@@GraysonCarr That's an understandable choice for you, Grayson. Though the new Santa Fe wasn't yet available when I purchased an SX-L version of the Sorento earlier in 2018, I think I would still make the same choice today. Here's why. We're a family of three and a half (My wife, myself, our teenage daughter, and a big dog) so we could have gotten along most of the time with a two row crossover. But while we use the third row only occasionally, it's very convenient when we chauffeur our daughter and several of her friends, especially when putting them as far as possible away from the driver is a plus both for the adults and the teenagers. :) It's also a big advantage when the third row means the difference between taking a single versus two vehicles on a local outing. Of course, many folks don't face those challenges but for us the third row of the Sorento was a major advantage, especially since it is actually usable and wrapped in a package that's more compact than its competition. Second, the Sorento is my wife's daily driver and our family truckster for long slogs on the freeway. For those duties the V6 is smoother and quieter with more linear performance. I like turbo 4 engines. I have a VW GTI. But for the size and weight of this class of vehicles I think a naturally aspirated V6 is more appropriate for us. Again YMMV. Finally, you're certainly correct that comparing MSRP's makes the Santa Fe more affordable. But real world negotiations can paint a different picture. The MSRP for our Sorento was a bit over $48K. I purchased it for $40K. I don't know, of course, what deal I could make for the Santa Fe but I suspect that the discount on the SX-L KIA is significantly more than the Ultimate trim of the Santa Fe. MSRP comparisons are useful as a starting point when assessing the cost of a vehicle but if one is serious about a particular vehicle, it's important to determine what a particular dealer is willing to offer. Bottom line is that you and I purchased different vehicles because we have different priorities. That's why I take reviewers' list of the "best" vehicles with a very large grain of salt. I think you purchased an excellent vehicle given your priorities. I'd say the same about our choice.

@Stephen Hendricks you should have your own car blog or KZbin channel. I’d read/watch. Pertaining to your comments, though the drivetrains are similar, it’s my understanding that even when the Kia Sorento had the same 2.0T engine as the Hyundai Santa Fe, they tuned it different. With Kia being more performance leaning. You can tell that by the drag race The Fast Lane did: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6O6kp-AZbSDiLs. I personally went from the 2011 Kia Sorento SX V6 (XM) to the 2016 Sorento SXL-T (UM) and happily gave up the two cylinders for more torque, still responsive acceleration and better fuel economy.

@@dalex7777 Thanks for the kind words, my friend. I hadn't seen the TFL comparison of the 2016 Sorento and the Santa Fe, so thanks for citing that, as well. A couple of points. First, I said in my original comment that the 2019 Santa Fe was slightly heavier than the comparable Sorento. That was wrong. It came from a quick google search and I should have checked the sources further. In fact, the Sorento is about 200 lbs heavier than the Santa Fe according to the manufacturers' specs. That makes sense since the Sorento has a third row of seats while the Santa Fe does not. Second, the TFL video you cited presents a real puzzle. Despite a weight advantage and better HP and torque numbers in the 2016 Santa Fe vs the 2016 Sorento 4 cylinder turbo motors, the Sorento blew the doors off the Santa Fe in their "mashup" drag race. The TFL guys couldn't explain it and neither can I. I would say, though, that TFL's performance tests are typically Unique (e.g. conducted a mile above sea level) and not necessarily carefully controlled. Their videos are informative and fun but I wouldn't bet the farm on their results. In this particular case, the Santa Fe and Sorento were comparable in terms of engine displacement and AWD. The result may well have been the case of differences in the individual vehicles involved. My first guess would be that the Sorento had better tires for the wet conditions in the "drag race" or other deficiencies in the particular Santa Fe being tested. Since the video is four years old and each model has since been updated, I suspect we'll never know. In any case, it's an interesting video. Like you, I replaced an earlier generation of the Sorento with an example of the current version. In my case it was a 2012 V6 AWD SX-L and a comparable 2018 model. I didn't have the option of the turbo 4 when I purchased the 2018 model since it had been discontinued after 2017 due to the low "take rate" for the turbo motor. It's interesting to hear from someone who has one.

I've got the Australian version of that vehicle which is a bit different. Ours has a 2.2l turbo diesel which makes a bit less power but has a lot more torque. I do agree about the lag though but I think it has more to do with the transmission than the engine. The biggest difference is that the Australian version has 7 seats, being a bit longer to accommodate the 3rd row. They aren't quite adult-sized but very comfortable for kids. The big selling point for me was the massive list of safety and comfort features and the first-rate active cruise control. I have a 90KM commute to work and this car makes it a very relaxing trip. I use the lane assist when driving on the highway. I also love the forward collision avoidance feature which has so far saved me from rear ending another car twice. I was driving once when the vehicle in front of me slammed the brakes. My Hyundai sounded the warning and immediately slammed the brakes and brought the car to a quick stop without me actually putting my foot on the brake. The only thing I really don’t like is the poor gas mileage.

We're actually on our 2nd Sante Fe Sport Ultimate. The button on the door handle is fantastic during winter - when gloves might prevent the hand detection feature. The Sante Fe is constantly evolving to (IMO) lead this division - for value for money, nothing beats it. Oddly, even the Kia equivalent sometimes seems to fall short - e.g. Sante Fe had adaptive cruise first. The HUD is a great "safety" feature I'm surprised they rolled in. Two main reasons why the Sante Fe beats out the competition - and for any family, I think these are HUGE reasons - 1) zero percent financing (we live in Ontario) can often make financing/leasing this vehicle much better than the competition - especially during resale/trade in, 2) check the IIHS ratings - this thing has been stellar for years, usually picking up the Top Safety Pick+ rating, and usually improving upon the previous year - often beating out the stronger selling Honda & Toyota equivalents (no clue why this is). Keep up the great work fellas!

So in case people are wondering why so many chairs have heat or cooled, essentially it's a blower using a DC fan, if it goes one way it's warm air, and if it goes the other it's cool air, where both functions come out of the same blower. You would literally need to have two separate devices in order to do both at once, which add to the cost of manufacturing, at least this is how most of the low cost solutions work. I understand that some luxury/high level trim cars could do both hot and cold at the same time for certain models/years/trims, and since I've never had to deal with one of those (besides rentals) I can't explain how those ones work, if they are two separate modules or not.

That doesn't make any sense. Is the airflow ducted twice? Is heated seats sucking in while the coils are on? Since when do heated seats blow air at all?
@CapELarry
@CapELarry 6 жыл бұрын
Most cars use heating coils in the seats. It’s has nothing to do with the fan. The fan only moves air in most cars and doesn’t heat or cool unless it has a thermoelectric unit attached. There’s no reason the fan can’t move air while the heating coils run.
@BeesonsCars
@BeesonsCars 6 жыл бұрын
My car has heated and cooled seats. When you use both it just blows the hot air out. It doesn’t sound like a lot but it really works. I guess it’s different for some cars, but Mercedes (afaik) doesn’t actually have “cooled” seats. They’re ventilated, so no AC ducting. So nothing really changes for it except that the air it’s blowing out travels through the heated seat coils. I’ve never been in any other car that has both and haven’t tore my seat apart so I’m not completely sure. But the blowing doesn’t seem to change direction. With actual A/C seats like Cadillac or Lincoln does it’d probably be more complicated.

I love your reviews about the Santa Fe, couple things to note in the trim level you guys drove was the road noise and the fact that it comes with dual pain glass (two layers of glass) on all the windows to reduce the road noise. Another , is how well the smart cruise control works, especially in tandem with the lane keep assist, and the Smart cruise control works in heavy traffic scenarios with stop and start. I drove one and it kept me from getting in so many accidents when someone would dive in front of me in traffic.

Passport will have a better drivetrain than this Santa Fe, but Santa Fe will beat it easily on features. Honda still hasn’t even figured out how to make their adaptive cruise control work below 20 mph on the Pilot, Ridgeline, and Passport, even though the CR-V can do it. If you commute in stop and go traffic, not having that is a deal breaker. Passport probably won’t have cooled seats, heated rear seats (which Yuri didn’t mention), head up display, pano sunroof, or 360 cam, all of which the Santa Fe has, and at a good price.
@DS..69
@DS..69 6 жыл бұрын
@@GraysonCarr Well you must be a fighter pilot to need all that. I can do with out all that you just mentioned. I dont do leather, so you can leave out all heated seats, cool seats gizmos. I've probably use cruise control in my life time, maybe 20 times in 25 years of driving experience. Not needed. Pano, shmano. Flip that baby over, your probably dead. I'd get the base model most likely. Have some of that on my newer cars. Really don't use most of it. The one thing I can't be without though. Smart key system. Love the key in the pocket and just grabbing the handle and opening the door. I'm a pretty basic car guy. Oh, can the industry please go back to starting the cars the newer old way. Instead of the old older way with the push button start. Old older tech guys. Lol

No paddle shifters but it does have manual shifting using the shift handle. You guys missed it. You also missed the easy rear seat folding and how flat they get. And what about the fact that the engine stops when you stop at stop lights. That can be turned off but you have to do it every time you start. One last thing that’s pretty significant. It has a four wheel hub lock button inside for Instant traction in snow. I think it’s the very best crossover available especially considering price.

I know power can be subjective , but down here in the states , basically 0 elevation , I feel like power is more than adequate . This is on a 2.0t Limited front wheel drive . There is a noticeable delay from a dead stop , between the gas pedal and the vehicle starting to accelerate , but after that it's fine , plenty of low end torque while cruising . This vehicle is for my wife , but I came from a Genesis Coupe 3.8 , so I do have something to compare this to acceleration wise . Another thing that's interesting , the seats in ours can be adjusted while driving , don't understand what the difference would be . Great video though , and after living with it for almost 3 months , I would say you gave it a proper review and covered it very well .
