China Teves it’s a fun bike that wants to lean in corners and is very lightweight. I’ve ridden mine at COTA for track day. For track, It will need adjustable suspension for a heavier person, for comfort according to my boyfriend who has one also . The cutout in the plastic is indeed for a power outlet. Get a good one from Kawasaki (the cheap ones get water in them and burn out fast we learned this first hand). Ergonomically, not a comfortable situation for 2-up. It’s quicker than the Honda CBR500 and the R3....a lot! Let them brag and leave them in the dust😇

If you're going to put a 12v socket or USB charger in the dummy plug hole, you MUST purchase and install a Kawasaki relay ($24 Amazon), I just installed a USB charger up front , and a 12v socket is now ready, under the passenger seat. LOVE my 2018 Ninja 400 KRT edition (lime-green) ABS which, at age 73, bought for my 74th birthday. Two days ago I turned 75 and look forward to riding the bike as often as the weather lets me, which is pretty often because it doesn't snow much in south Florida ; ). Kawasaki Kid

Great review, thanks for sharing this! My only comment is on ABS: Even expert riders I know on the street prefer ABS. It's not needed if you really know what you're doing (like Marc Marquez kind of expertise) but any less skill and a panic braking moment is virtually guaranteed to cause a bad day at some point in a riding career. Every single rider I know who crashed did so for a limited number of reasons: Fear of cornering, target fixation, or panic braking. The most common cause is panic braking by far, locking the front wheel and going down instantly. My recommendation is ABS for all riders, unless you're limited to the track only and really want the feedback that non-ABS provides while tail braking into the corners.
@2WR5 жыл бұрын
Eric, you make some good points and I don't necessarily disagree. For me, I'd go without and put the money toward some Ohlins drops ins for the front forks, but if I were to get one it would be limited to pretty much track days. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.

I started on a ninja 250 and was out riding guys on 600's before selling it and now looking to pick up one of these. It's definitely more fun to ring out a small agile bike than to have to look for a safe spot or pay track fees just to experience the power band in a big bore bike let alone its full potential.

Nice looking bike and looking at that really small pipe sticking out the end of the exhaust it seems the performance could be greatly improved with an aftermarket exhaust. As far as not having a TFT dash my bike does have one but I miss the dial for RPM's. Just something about that needle going up and down going through the revs compared to square dots lighting up. Good to see you riding on the street again although I do like the dirt.

I thought the end was funny when he said "this bike wasn't designed for a passenger". I ride with a friend who has this same Ninja 400 and he rides with his GF on the back, keeping up with me at speeds of around 90+ on back country roads. I've also owned many sports bikes and aside from highway racing, these bikes function exactly the way you would need them to function. The real argument against them is about having more horsepower. But if your not into risking your licence/self to hit 160+ freeway speeds then I'd encourage people to get these kind of bikes and treat them like sports bikes if they want. The sad side of owning a 600rr or 1000rr is that 90% of your day to day riding you won't even tap into it's power. You might occasionally go from zero to 60 in a couple seconds to close gaps in traffic, or to pass slow vehicles. But for the bulk of your riding experience your going to be riding within certain limits despite the rocket that's strapped to your balls.

Nice review, you covered a lot. There is a little high pitch whine early in the video that seems to go away. You might want to look into that. Good to see you did not overuse the word "beginners bike", far too many reviewers do when they review lighter bikes. Been riding 45 years still appreciate lighter bikes. Some of us older veterans keep a good range of bikes around.
@2WR5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kerry. (The noise was from the tank. What you hear squealing is the vent due to the hot sun on the black tank. Took me awhile to figure it out which is why you see the fuel cap open later in the video to relieve the pressure. I did what I could to edit it out most of it in post). In any event, I'm not sure why everyone likes to refer to all the small displacement bikes as beginner when they can be a lot of run for experienced riders as well...and without breaking the bank.

It's lightweight and nimble enough, it'll handle gravel roads fine. Just keep in mind it doesn't have a ton of suspension travel so while well groomed gravel roads are fine, those with potholes will cause from problems.

Great Video I have the Versys X 300 and love it, but if they put the 400 engine in it, I will be trading up. I like the off road and dirt road ability of the Versys X How dose the 400 do for MPG The other thing I like about the Versys is the 17 liter tank (4.49 US gallons ) don't like having to look for gas, just fill up and rid all day.
@2WR5 жыл бұрын
It'd be interesting if they would decide to put the 400 in the Versys; could be a big seller! As for the mpg that's one thing I never test. Due to my filming process I don't believe it would give an accurate representation of how it would actually do under normal riding conditions.
@hildtonmcconnell56265 жыл бұрын
@@2WR I all ways liked it when they put MPG on there test rides, as they ride a bit harder than normal, so then I know I will at least get that or better MPG. Many years ago some magazines would put low high and average mpg, and with the size of tank you could get how often you would be looking for gas. I will never by a bike that dose not get a good range per tank of gas. nothing worse than spoiling a good ride having to look for gas stations, and wondering if you are going to make it to the next station.

Currently have a Ninja 650 in the stable of bikes. The ergos are pretty similar between the two but the 400 feels much lighter...as it should since it's about 100lbs less wet.

Can a normal sized person (6'2" 215lbs) be comfortable on this for a 2 hour ride? I'm 50, haven't ridden in decades (ZX9R), and thinking about getting one of these to run errands across town and weekend day trips. This bike seems perfect and will keep me out of jail. Most interested in highway gas mileage at 70mph and any hand-numbing vibration on longer rides? Great review!
@2WR5 жыл бұрын
My buddy (6'3" 210) who helped me with some filming commented on how well it fit him. I'd go ride on and see what you think. The parallel twin didn't have much vibration at highway speeds.

Personally I always recommend starting on a used dual sport because a) they’re cheap b) they’re meant to be dropped and c) you’ll be able to get most of your money back out of it. But, if you must start on a new sport bike, this one would be on my short list.
@darkscorpion65345 жыл бұрын
@@2WR hmm 🤔 Which dual sports would you recommend I check out?
@2WR5 жыл бұрын
Kawi KLX 250, Suzuki DR200 or DRZ400, Honda CRF230 L or 250L, Yamaha WR250. Pretty much any of the Japanese Dual Sports can be picked up at a really good price, ridden and year or two and sold at about what you paid for it.

2 Wheeled Rider I’ve never ridden on a bike Before and I want to learn. Theres a 2019 ninja400 without abs for $3200. If I learn on it do you think I can sell it and still get my money back? If not what should I start off with? Thanks

Currently own one. It serves it's purpose perfectly. Wanted a decent bike to commute to work and casual weekend cruising. Little small for someone of my weight but it still gets down the freeway with my giant ass.

I have a question?? realistically if I never ride in the rain how often would I need to adjust, oil and clean the chain..... because I will take my to the shop so I just want to know how often I will have to adjust and oil the chain? Thanks and I like your reviews..
@2WR5 жыл бұрын
I normally only have to adjust a chain once per set of tires. Most manufacturers recommend oiling the chain every 600 miles or so. You’d also want to oil it after you wash the bike to keep the chain from rusting. Cleaning/degreasing the chain? If you’re not riding in the rain or dusty conditions, maybe once or twice per set of tires or once annually.

So this or your Honda cbr 500? I'm gonna buy either one of these, but most likely the 500 and for the fuel effiency, I also the 500 is more comfortable on the highway, which I will be doing often. Ninja is cheaper thou so im considering it.

It’s been a few years since I’ve ridden the CBR500R and I don’t remember much sticking out to me. I’d suggest riding them both and then decide.

I have never ridden a motorcycle any reasonable amount of time - rode a YZ125 a couple of times (slow trail riding), but you can upshift without the clutch?
@2WR5 жыл бұрын
You can upshift without using the clutch on any bike if you know what you're doing. If you're asking if it comes stock with a quick shifter, no, it doesn't.

I was thinking about buying this motorcycle and buying enough groceries to fit in my backpack. Is that a good idea or should this motorcycle be used for pleasure or to get to one place to another without carrying too many things?

I think it'd be fine for that. It's cheap transportation and you can also have fun on it.

If you were a beginner what would you do? Would you get a n400 or go directly to a 650? Nice video :)
@2WR5 жыл бұрын
If you're big enough (physically) to handle a 650, I'd go that route. I'd buy a few year old 650 over a new 400 but if buying new? The 400 a great motorcycle for $5k.

Thinking about buying this exact bike in the next two months from this exact dealer. I live in Frederick. Thanks for the review and I'm excited for JT Motorsports, sounds like they might be growing...would really like to test ride one of these, any thoughts on that...?

They've definitely outgrown their current location. Call the shop and ask for Phil if you want to test one out.

I bought one a month ago, have about 800 miles on it now, it's a great bike, more than enough power for daily driving and a little fun, I am 6 foot 240Lbs and it moves me around pretty well even with a rider. I use to own a 2001 ninja 500, pretty much equivalent in power from what I remember. I was going to get a 636, but the insurance was 1/4 the price for this bike and more than half the price of the 636, don't regret it.

Okay so as somebody who's just trying to get into bikes, but knows how to drive a stick shift, what do you mean you don't use the clutch to upshift???
@2WR5 жыл бұрын
Gonna be tough to explain in writing but I don't use it except at possible low speeds through town. Just back off the throttle and shift. You can do it that way in a car too, it will slide right into gear. If you do it correctly, all is good but if you don't...you can seriously screw up the transmission.

First time rider here , would you reccomend this bike for a begginer , so far im leaning towards the ninja 650
@2WR5 жыл бұрын
Due to the lower seat height and lightweight, yes. I started my wife on the 650 (great bike) but had to lower it, shave the seat down and it still didn't pan out. I think the 400 has more then enough power to have fun with on the road and plenty comfy.

Bro i have this exact bike and i love it, ride out to meets and being able to keep up with other bigger bikes is a blast. All depends...budget, skill level, height, how you plan to ride it, etc. We have a 650 in the garage and it's a great bike but the 400 is a lot of fun too and a much lower price.
