Two days ago, I did a 74 mile HIGHWAY trip on my 2018 Ninja 400 KRT ABS, along with my club members, who mostly ride Harleys and the like. At no time did I lag behind nor feel uncomfortable on the bike, as we reached speeds up to 75 mph. The Ninja 400 is IMO far and away the best beginner bike for city commuting and track days. I went with a CBR500R due to the larger frame and more comfortable seat and suspension being better for 2 up riding on the highway. I live along the front range and it's not uncommon to have 30+ MPH headwinds or crosswinds with a 75 MPH speed limit. The Ninja is just too light and the pillion is too small. I just got back from a 100 mile ride an hour ago and I was really happy about the extra size, weight, and tire width when I was fighting 30 MPH crosswinds. It's all about what works for your type of riding.

Watched this today after already straddling one in the showroom and deciding to buy. It looks like I made a good decision, and it will be mine tomorrow. It will be a commuter bike for me; my daily driver has "been to the moon and well along on the return trip" now (330K mi), so I needed something reliable without a big hit to the wallet in the uncertain economy we have entered because of the pandemic. I started riding over 25 years ago with a Ninja 500, then traded up to a ZX-6. Loved that bike, but it was stolen a couple of years back and just getting around to replacing it. Thanks for keeping it "real" when providing your impressions. I'm hoping my daughter will take an interest in learning to ride. If so, this will likely be her starter bike.

This was a very good review and I completely understand the idea of "its good but there are more interesting options out there" but I will give a perspective on why I ended up buying this bike. To frame my perspective, I am a young at heart 60 year old and for many years I rode a Yamaha RD400 in the UK that I bought new when I was 18. As a subsequent student of mechanical engineering I got into modifying all types of bikes pretty heavily (including my own) as well as riding a lot of bikes that were pretty spicy back in their day such as the RD350LC, RG500, my brother-in-laws Yamaha Genesis 1000 etc. For various reasons I stopped riding in my late 20's - emigrating to a new country, having a family etc. In late 2021 I decided to get my motorcycle licence encouraged by my wife and my son who was also interested in getting a motorcycle licence. Having an appreciation for the benefits of training, I signed my son and myself up for a motorcycle training course. At the same time I started looking into what motorcycle would be appropriate to buy considering two key factors. The first was that I wanted a bike that my son (being new to motorcycling) would have fun on but at the same time, knowing what I knew from being an 18 year old two-stoke tearaway, I did not want to buy a bike that would get him into serious trouble (Gixxer bros). The second consideration is my own mortality - I am not 21 any more and my reactions are not what they were when I was young, neither am I as bouncy so I did not want to become another "born-again-biker" statistic. Get back into it gently was my philosophy. For me the choice came down to a KTM Duke 390 and a Ninja 400. The R3 is nice but a bit physically smaller and for the same money I will always take more horsepower that the Ninja has (despite Yamaha proclivities from my youth). My son really liked the looks of the Ninja and at the time I was buying, nowhere within 300 miles had a KTM Duke 390 in stock, so we got a Ninja 400. I am extremely happy with the choice we made and would make the same decision again. Next year I may another bike that is a more of an "interesting choice" but we will still keep the Kawasaki because it has all the elements that make motorcycling fun - the price is good, parts are cheap, its reliable, good on gas, insurance is not bad, it's very light and handles well and it is more than fast enough for normal use. My perspective per Yammie's comment on "more interesting" choices which in my mind include marques such as Aprilia, Ducati etc. come from owning a "tuned" twin turbocharged BMW - that is a fun car but its reliability sucks and believe me - anyone who thinks motorcycles are money-pits has never owned a gutsy BMW. All I can say it I'm glad we also own a couple of other boring, but incredibly reliable, other cars. So to conclude, I think the Ninja 400 is a great bike. While it may be a "lazy choice", if my laziness means I don't have to push it home because of temperamental reliability then I'm okay with that, and now that I have something I can depend on, I can buy something more "exotic" knowing I have the fun and dependable Kawi still waiting for me . . . .although being as good as it is, not sure I really need to go for anything else (except for having a wife that really likes the idea of huge cruiser-baggers with the cushy seats . . . Twisted Road here I come!)

If you’re growing bored of a bike, maybe you’re just on some boring ass roads? Haha. I’m a new rider myself and nabbed a Ninja 650 because I was looking for a good all-around bike that I could comfortably commute on the freeways with, take on long day rides, yet had the sporting characteristics when I was feeling more spirited. I think the Kawi Ninja lineup (400, 650, 1000) is absolutely perfect for this sorta thing! In Canada our road speeds are so low that even this bike can speed on the highway in 3rd gear, but once I get my full M licence i'll still want a bigger bike, Ontario insurance is insane though.

I've been a Motorcycle rider virtually my entire life. Had my Motorcycle Endorsement continuous for more than FIFTY Years. At age 68, I'm past my Crotch Rocket impress the Girls stage, lol! Fro what I've seen and heard, the Ninja 400 sounds like it would be a great little Senior Citizen commuter Bike, stretch my gas Dollars, and provide some weekend fun on the side. I only expect to be able to ride another 5 Years or so due to my age. I am SERIOUSLY considering buying one of these!

I bought a 2017 R3 with around 1000 miles on it last month. Other than the extra displacement, the other thing the Ninja 400 has over the R3 is a slipper clutch. As a new rider, I know learning with no assists is a good thing. I also know how nice it would be to have on a low CC bike. I am absolutely loving the R3, and felt very confident within a few rides. The bike came with a nice exhaust, frame sliders, front and rear spools as well as an integrated taillight. Very happy with my purchase and am dreading this long winter. Ride safe all

I just got back into riding after a 20 year break and picked up a 2022 400 about 2 weeks ago. So far its mountains better on the looks and suspension side of all most everything i rode in the late 90’s. It feels like with a few mods it could run with sv650’s. One company shows dyno charts with this bike putting down 53+ at the wheel.

I’m going to pick one up for sure. The 2020 in white looks sharp, so does the KRT. It’s a lot of bike for the money, definitely better than the R3 maybe just not in looks, but where it matters.

In my country the new R3 is despised by the people here, for being a failure in design, and they like the old R3 better. And people love the New Ninja's looks. I guess people here like sharp edges.

Most seats are. I had a versys 650 that the seat felt very comfortable but after a 5 hour mountain ride my ass was getting numb. I think a gel seat will solve the problem but make it a bit squishy on the turns

I don't consider it only a beginner bike. When I was younger I had a Ninja 900 for years and used to race through the canyons with it. and I really loved it. but now that I am older, for the last few years I have been riding a Ninja 250 for around town. that is more of what I consider a beginner bike, but recently I was thinking about getting another big bike again. so the other day I tested the MT09, and that bike was insane. it takes off like my 900 was after seven thousand rpm's but right off the line. and I decided it wasn't for me, I don't need that much power and I don't want to feel on the edge all the time, that bike is just asking for trouble, and I don't feel like being painted on some mountain side. I didn't like how the front wheel doesn't feel planted, I never felt totally safe on it. anyway I went to a Kawi dealer the next day to test a Z900. something that I thought would feel really familiar, and they didn't have it for a test, and the only bike on that day that they had for a test was the Ninja 400, so I took it out for only around 15 minutes, and I was totally surprised with how much I enjoyed it. it felt as light as my 250, but with allot more pep, and it was so flickable. I think even more than my 250, I really liked it. so much so that I have been considering getting one instead of a big bike. but there are still some other bikes I want to test. personally I would rather ride a 400 Ninja to it's full potential. then get on an MT09 that I can't get close to it's potential. and I bet on the 400 Ninja I could burn allot of bigger bikes through a smaller canyon like the one you were on in this video.

For anyone who hasn't owned a parallel twin, the sounds in the video are little different from one with much larger displacement. I had a Triumph America with an 865cc parallel twin and it sounded the same with stock exhaust. They can be made louder for sure, but the engine output sounds remain similar but more throaty. Whichever is chosen, the sound will remain similar across brands and displacement sizes and once used to it, not a big deal at all.

I absolutely agree about Kawasaki not being a boring manufacturer. I am of the solid belief that they run a close second to Yamaha among the big 4. I put it in the order from best to boring Yamaha, Kawasaki, Honda and the Suzuki last. Opinions?

This is a great bike if you like the styling of a sportbike but dont want to be pulled over every time you ride. You can still have a lot of fun, you can still speed, you'll save gas and you still look cool to everyone around you (as long as they're not listening to it - sorry had to). Plus for the price you really cant go wrong.

Shadow V. What a shame, the only good sounding smaller bike that sounds good.
@vali695 жыл бұрын
@@MrSkarbek36 well the price is due to the engine.... it is small but as its an i4 it has more components then a twin, obviously, and that increases the manufacturing cost... plus because of this if tge had the same equipment as on the ninja 400 for example it will cost like 7k, more then the 400 and i think the 650 so why not add better suspension, brakes and electronics to make it feel premium? So yeah... it might be close to 10k tbh... but we'll have ti wait for eicma for more details

21:05 "limited on space.. focused into one area" that's it right there! I was looking the Ninja 400 but now I feel like I will be getting the Honda NC700x (with Clutch) for the MPG, built in storage and option to add a more aggressive tire and skip plate to ride down lime rock or gravel roads with having to get an adventure bike or dual sport. I like the dual sport idea by I have too much highway to ride on. Might still get a Ninja 400 later just for fun or to teach my son to ride.
