We leased a 2019 Niro EV EX and are absolutely thrilled with the car. It's actually getting much higher range than Kia disclosed. We're averaging 265-270 miles on a full charge and we live in S. CA with the air con on at all times. Others are reporting 300. The base model EX gave us all the safety tech we were looking for including smart cruise control with stop and go which is terrific for CA's bumper to bumper freeway traffic. The seats are very comfortable with cloth inserts surrounded by "vegan" leather (using Tesla's terminology for their non-animal leather seats) and there's plenty of leg/head room plus good cargo space even with the back seats up. We love the multi system regen, the twist shift, and the fact the car has a cooling system for the battery because we live in Palm Springs in the Mohave desert. We were replacing a 2017 Hyundai Tucson and wanted the roominess of an SUV and the Niro EV provides that. The only complaint we have is the charging port. It looks and feels flimsy and they need to improve on that. This is our first EV and we're looking forward to what Kia/Hyundai offer in three years when our lease is up on this one. Thanks for your video. It helped us with choosing the Niro and we're really happy we did!

@brianboru1975
@brianboru1975 3 жыл бұрын
@@dnegel9546 27,500 plus miles later and we still love the car. It has had no issues except for a steering motor cable thingy that was repaired under the warranty. Nothing squeaking or rattling over time and maintenance has basically been rotating tires and replacing a couple filters. No changes in range and it charges as expected on our home level 2 charger which averages $25-$30 a month extra on our electric bill. It's fun to drive, handles the road well, and we love the smart cruise with driver assist, as well as the brake hold. The smart cruise can be set as low as 5 miles per hour and we use for both city and highway driving. Loads of room in the boot and we used it a lot last year to help with a move from our old home into our new one. We lease our cars so we will soon be saying goodbye to "Zeus" but we have no doubts he will be a terrific used EV for his next owner.

What I also like about the Niro EV is that is has a sunroof which I prefer over the Tesla panoramic roof. I also like the hatchback design to take full advantage of storage capacity.

i am driving a kia niro ev for the weekend, we have atm arround 5 degrees celsius arround here in austria. i managed to drive 420km on a single charge, with heating, lights on, all the comfort sources, drivin in normal and sports mode, never in eco mode, and driving arr town, and on the highway, where was driving 140km/h and just4fun sometimes even 180km/h although i thought it was limited to 167km/h. its a great car, really good ride, great cabine, i am 196cm tall and a really heavy dude and i can sit perfectly. the only things that suck are the backup cam at night, sometimes the infotainment and the fact, that there is no app in order to check your cars status while charging like you get on BMWs or teslas.

I purchased a Niro PHEV a year ago. I have a little over 5,000 miles on it now. Most of my trips are 24 miles or less on a daily basis, so most of my driving is in EV mode. I calculate that costs me about 13 cents! I still prefer having a gas engine so that I don't have to hunt for a charging outlet or station at a destination 100 miles or more away and then have range anxiety on returning home.

I'm glad some brands are still installing halogen fog lights! Bright white LEDs are useless in bad weather and defeat the entire purpose of what fog lights are supposed to do. Fog lights should emit a warm, low and flat light beam, that is focused on the road and periphery a short distance ahead, 2500k to 2700k is best for visibility in snow and fog. I have been very annoyed by the move to "color match" all forward lighting in the industry. It's aesthetics (form) overriding the safety (function) these lights are supposed to provide. Just one more irritating trend in the auto industry, just like the tacked on infotainment screens.

  I swear. I live in the Midwest and damn near half of the trucks I see are now retrofitted with LED headlights, fog lights, and a light bar. Which is fine, but they aim then way up into oncoming traffic and drive with their fogs and light bars on behind people to fuck with them. It’s horrible.

@dlg5485

@vide fa Actually, no you can't, not as a plug and play solution for fog light applications. I challenge you to name a single vehicle manufacturer that offers 2500k LED fog light from factory, you won't find one. I further challenge you to find an aftermarket 2500K LED plug and play fog light solution. They are extremely difficult to find and are typically not plug and play installation, if you can find it at all. As I said above, it's all about color matching and lighting aesthetics these days. Poor weather visibility is hardly a consideration.

Good review. Last year I was waiting for this car to come out, but ended up buying a Model 3, as I needed a car and only wanted to buy a good electric vehicle. While I do not regret at all spending more to get the M3, I suggest to people who are impressed with my car to look at this one along with the Kona and the Bolt. Having the hatchback for storage, good comfort & features, and what I call good “family usability” make this car vehicle very compelling to me. The lower price tag also helps. I plan on turning others onto this review and others you’ve done to see what EV could be right for them.

To anyone says that “It’s still a Kia,” this car comes from a company that is a major player in the automotive world, as well as built strict quality control standards that Teslas wish to be built to. There’s no point of making of eco-friendliness to the 1%, they use it as a tax-deduction or status-symbol, this Niro is for the person who really cares for the environment.

Exactly, because alot of EVs people are talking about these days are luxury/performance vehicles, that has become kind of an expectation. I think what KIA/Hyundai are doing is perfect. It's still quick because of electric motors, but doesn't offer so much unnecessary performance that the normal driver doesn't need. Once EVs drop to about a hair under 30k in the future, I'm instantly picking one of these up, hopefully it's a Kona

For the viewers who believe that the 20th century was a time when dinosaurs roamed the highways, it's worth noting that for many decades drivers managed to use their RWD vehicles in challenging winter conditions when four wheel drive vehicles were few and far between. Moreover, in the late sixties I owned a Saab 96, one of the very few cars with FWD in those days. It was virtually unstoppable in the ice and snow of hilly upstate New York when most other vehicles sat immobilized in their garages and driveways. AWD is a welcome option in modern crossovers but for about 95% of winter driving it's no more effective than winter tires on the front wheels of a vehicle with the engine weight directly over those wheels.

Also with EVs and the option of putting the motor in the back that weight can be over the rear wheels. Personally I prefer the decision of Tesla and VW to put the motor in the rear.
@StephenMalbon
@StephenMalbon 5 жыл бұрын
In the UK we only get this in one spec, which is the one you show here plus a few other bits. Oddly though the internal lights are tungsten filament bulbs not LED. It also has a WLTP range of 380 miles and "What Car" magazine got a real-world range of 252 miles, almost 5 miles per kwh. I don't agree that it needs a second motor but if the motor was at the rear then they wouldn't have to limit the torque at very low speeds, they're doing that in an attempt to reduce wheelspin.

I’m not a big fan of the design of the Kia Niro as I am still warming up to EV’s but as far as the interior goes, I really like the way the dash is set up along with floating transmission selector. What would be cool is if Kia could’ve added some more functionality to that center display and allowed you to pull up a map so you could see it without having to look at the infotainment screen. Some ambient lighting would be cool too to make the vehicle feel more premium.

The great handling comes from not only the low center of gravity but also from torque vectoring on the e-Niro which is not available on the hybrid models. Acceleration is more than fast enough for most people; remember this is a family/practical car, not a sports sedan that wants to compete with the likes of a BMW 3-series like Tesla with the Model 3. It's a great car and in most European countries it will be a struggle to get hold of one. Luckily I reserved my spot on time, only about a month of waiting left.

Please, let's end together this trend of calling one pedal driving "regen". Regenerative braking is the transformation of a car's kinetic energy into power that goes to the batteries. It is a feature on all EVs, and can only be disabled if the batteries can't take the extra charge, or are somehow defective. One pedal driving, or *automatic* regeneration, happens when the regeneration begins as soon as you take your foot off the thrust pedal ("go" pedal is kinda stupid, let's end it too), regardless of you pressing the brakes or not.

I have owned nine Kia's during the last number of years, and the latest the 2018 Kia Niro Hybrid is a really great car to drive. Out the door at $29K Canadian, it's just at my borderline of price acceptability for any car. The new fully electric vehicle looks GREAT but the price for me is just not there yet. But most important for me at this point is the fact there are no range worries since the current model can run on gas, and I can head anywhere without worrying about filling up. Mileage for me sits around 60 to 65 miles per Canadian gallon, so gas costs very little. It's also a lot of fun to drive and the Sport mode doesn't seem to affect gas mileage by any noticeable amount (it's actually better than my motorcycle mileage...GL1800 Gold Wing..) I really think Kia has a winner here in any of their hybrid or fully electric vehicles. But the landscape for charging convenience is where it has to improve drastically before full EV's can come into their own. Plus the price MUST drop significantly as well

The issue is how many Kia owners own their own homes or have a place to charge this thing? Teslas are bought by rich people who have homes. I find proliferation of electrics more dependent on fast charging outside stations availability (10 minutes or less). Till then, they’ll remain a niche product.

What's funny is the Chevrolet bolt actually has more legroom and headroom, but definitely less width across the rear seat. And less cargo room. It is a little more snappy from a standing stop. Kia definitely reduced immediate torque.. strangely the Kona and Soul have the same driveline but do NOT behave this way.. perhaps weight... And there are trying to save wear and tear on the drive line . Nice car though... Like all the tech they give you.

What is the big deal with AWD in the US? They don't use it in Norway, Sweden, Ukrine, Latvia.. where it snows a lot. The folks in Detroit, Buffalo etc. a generation ago did fine on rear wheel drive sedans/wagons. Front wheel drive with a low center of gravity(the battery) is super for stabilty in snow.. It is impressive and I’m excited for the future of EV’s. This is nice, and I like KIA’s. BUT until they are priced under 30k they are still a luxury for most of us. Also doesn’t include the car charging network, which in most places isn’t adequate for the influx of EV’s or doesn’t exist at all.We are getting there though slowly. I have an old leaf, and want to try and get another EV, especially a crossover but idk yet.
@robburcham6289
@robburcham6289 4 жыл бұрын
If we want EVs under 30k we're going to have to accept range under 200 miles. And there's nothing wrong with that, 150 miles of range is plenty for most people. Instead of getting gas every week, just plug it in twice a week.
@vincem4756
@vincem4756 4 жыл бұрын
@@robburcham6289 I disagree. The focus should be on making EVs on par with ICE cars and not having people settle. Because well, they wont? Why would a consumer get an EV when an ICE car is cheaper and does more? A priority should be to make batteries as affordable as possible with private or govt investment. A car with under 300 miles wouldn't be useful to anyone outside of major cities. Americans drive a lot and the range anxiety (in my experience) and price are what keep people away from Evs. This followed by time to charge and lack of charging infrastructure . I feel Evs at limited range , in addition to previously mentioned drawbacks, would deeply harm the industry and even turn off a generation of car buyers. And with climate change accelerating its not something we can afford to do as a country. It should be done right the first time, that means using private or state investment to address the previous concerns. What use is a $15k electric car that only goes 150 miles and has no where to charge? For $12k you can get 400 miles a tank in an ICE car and no charge time. What use is an EV if you cant leave the city or it dies on the way to work? What use if when you finally find a place to charge its packed or it takes 2-3 hours? The industry still has a huge way to go. I agree EVs are the superior long term technology but unless you plan on punishing people they wont be mass adopted until these concerns are addressed and we make them as desirable and easy as ICE cars. Settling isn't an option. If the private sector wont do it then the state may have to.

Okay, can we PLEASE stop using the idiotic MPG-e term? EVs are becoming mainstream, so let's use the proper miles/kWh. It's not that hard to figure out. 240 miles / 64 kWh battery = an average of 3.7 miles per kWh 😉 Thanks!
@ChadWilson

I disagree. Your kw/h per mile doesn't explain (to someone who doesn't know about evs) anything. The mpg-e is a logical thought...that thought being: "100mpg-e = 100mpg gas, so it should only cost the price of about 1 gallon of gas to go 100 miles."

AWD system adds weight and that negates Kia's idea of a commuter car here. The Niro seems best for the daily work commute. I understand why you'd need AWD but maybe when the tech gets cheaper, so does the car and they might add an AWD in the coming years. Who knew.
