2019 Kia Rio Hatchback Review - Behind the Wheel

My wife and I got this car last March 2020 and I love driving it! It is so comfortable and very fuel efficient. On long drives, I would say, it is still comfortable up to 130-140kph (because in UAE highway top speed is 140. Haha!) but it’s natural habitat is still in the city because of its size and the steering is phenomenal!

TJP punzalan yes. Base and mid have 1.4L. This particular one is equivalent to mid trim minus the cruise control and different infotainment unit.

Lloyd I believe top trim has 1.6L. Because base and mid have 1.4L.

The 4-speed transmission is archaic by today’s standards & most notably, it hurts fuel mileage. In other markets Kia uses their tried & tested 6-speed auto. In other markets you can also get the Rio with a 1.6 na or a 1.0 3-cylinder turbocharged motor.

It’s a shame that the Philippine version of the Rio is so underpowered. My older 2012 Rio EX has a 1.6L in-line 4 with 138hp and 123 ft-lbs of torque. In a SCCA course it’s actually really fun to drive and in tight turns, i.e around Mulholland or Sepulveda, it’s so much fun to hit it hard!

I agree. But not the same segment. This is a hatch, not a normal sedan like the city. And if you go with it, I would even take a base model Civic at less than 1.1m.

It looks decent and good enough. Well equipped. The whole "poise" or "tindig" is rather better than expected too. And I must agree with Caco that this is indeed a very good choice for a "first car". HOWEVER, with that price? Yeaaaah, there are a lot of better choices really.. This is a very good car, with a not so very good price point..

What i hate about kia rio hatch back is that, the 2018 we had with 33 mileage after 5 years, its accelerator does not reach higher speed.. it only reaches 40 km/h no natter how max you press the accelerator, the biggest problem when go on climbing the hills, the power is not enough to climb

ampalaya + dark vader = so funny. btw, the problem of the distributor of kia here in the Philippines is too much cost cutting and the price is not reasonable. at this price point leather steering wheel , automatic aircon must be standard. sayang kia is a good korean brand same as hyundai .

For that price, this car is absolute shite. In Mexico, where the Rio is built, you can get the base LX model with all-round discs, stability control, 6 airbags, a 1.6L 121 hp engine and a 6-speed auto gearbox. And what does it cost? Around 650,000 Philippine pesos, or around $13,400 US dollars.
