The recommended oil for KTM/Husky 2-stroke transmissions, including your TPI is Motorex Top Speed 4T 15W50. The recommended oil to put in your TPI oil tank (or mixed with gasoline for carb models) is Motorex Cross Power 2T. You'll find this information in the Operators Manual.

Pleased to hear that you like the drain tool. Be very careful not to overtorque the oil level screw. Many people have stripped the threads on these. On my bikes I only ever remove the oil level screw once (to measure the oil volume) and from then on measure out the required oil volume in a jug.

Hi! Can you help me please? I just bought a 2018 exc 250 tpi, during my first ride i realise that after i start the bike my oil light wont turn of completely, it stays always on. I start the bike, the light turns on very bright and a few seconds "turns off" the bright and stay always on with a less bright light and never turns off completely. Im not sure but i think before the light used to turn off completely, is this normal? When i got home after that ride( 3 hours rt ,79km) i refilled the oil tank and measured that took about 60ml to fill up again. So it is not oil faulty...
@TokyoOffroad2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about the problem. Something is wrong, but so long as you keep the oil tank full and the oil pump works OK then no damage to the bike will occur. Perhaps the oil level sensor in the oil tank is faulty and needs replacing. I haven't had one fail yet so am not certain of the symptoms...
@desigart10892 жыл бұрын

Hi! one more time I want to ask you for advice. Recently wether outside is too hot and in the oil pump line I can see small air bubbles. Motorcycle KTM exc 300 tip is only 60 hours. After priming its disappeared but happened again after an ride. Oil tank is full. Oil pump working well. Should I change oil pump? Clean oil tank? Or its just high temperature and riding makes oil-air cocktail in the oil tank/ Thank you.

This isn't an issue I've experienced (was riding today in the mountains, probably high of 30C and no air bubbles in tube). My recommendation is to discuss with your KTM dealer, or you might like to ask the same question on the Facebook KTM Husqvarna TPI Owners Group.

Hey I was sold 15w50 4 stroke transmission oil to put in the transmission, does it matter that it says it's for 4 strokes? I imagine the transmission would be similar and the guy in the shop said it's fine. In fact I cant seem to find oils that specifically say 2 stroke gear oil. I'm new to the 2 strokes so it might be a stupid question but thanks anyway

After the first 5hr oil change, in how many hrs should the rest of the oil changes be done? Every 8hrs on a 2 stroke?
@TokyoOffroad6 жыл бұрын
The KTM 2019 TPI manual says every 40H, although I'll do it every 20H, or less. It's always better to change the oil sooner than later. Have a good look at the oil when you change it and if it looks clean you can probably go longer between changes. The interval will also depend on how you ride the bike. For aggressive race use changing the oil after every race is probably a good idea. For trail riding like I do then the interval can be longer...

Just bought a used 2018 250 tpi. My first two stroke. Bike won't rev when cold, but I guess that's normal? But some times it wont rev in second gear. Seems like I'm hitting some kind of revlimiter, other times it's fine. Revs good in higher gears. Any idea what it could be?
@TokyoOffroad6 жыл бұрын
Does the bike rev out OK when warm? My 2019 takes about 5-10 mins before its up to temp. When it's cold do not give it too much throttle. It's best to warm the engine carefully and not give it a handful of throttle when still cold.

I've tried, but didn't seem to get much more out so don't bother. I change the oil regularly so it doesn't bother me that much whether I leave a small amount of old oil. But there's nothing wrong if you want to tip the bike right over and drain as much as possible.

So is this bike legal in nz and also if so when does it need an engine rebuild
@TokyoOffroad6 жыл бұрын
Engine rebuilds on KTM 2-stroke off-road bike are typically done between 100-200H depending on how it has been used. If you ride aggressively and spend more time with the engine at high rpm then the overhaul interval should be shorter than someone who ride more relaxed. I typically overhaul my top ends at about 150H. Regarding whether the bike is legal in NZ, that would be best answered by a KTM dealer in NZ, or someone else with experience there. Anyone else know?

The stock TPI power, especially down low, feels quiet soft. I’ve add an FMF Gnarly pipe and RK Tek head to mine and it performs much better now. This year I’ll probably also install an aftermarket engine control unit so I can change the map for additional performance.

@@TokyoOffroad Thanks for the info. Not liking the sound of a soft bottom end. Many seem to report that. However some, seem to report the bottom end feels more like a 300. Wonder if there are different maps in the bikes, or they say it feels more like a 300 because it lugs really well for a 250. JD has dyno charts comparing the TPI and well a jetted 250. The charts are almost identical. Instead of a full out dyno run; I'd like to see a comparison of 1/4 throttle roll on of each bike. Wondering if the ECU is playing some sort of emissions game at part throttle or different maps installed in the bikes for different regions.

Tim Maskell - Yes, the TPI does lug well and you have to try really hard to stall it. Nonetheless, stock it feels soft compared to a carb model.

I agree with Matt on this, I have changed the gear oil on my 2017 xcw a few times now. I was nervous about adding too much oil, so I measured the amount that came out. Even after opening the overflow I get roughly 650 ml. So that tells me there’s either 150ml that’s still in there somewhere or wept out of the overflow. Also, I found that opening the overflow, allowed more used oil to come out the drain hole. I love your videos Tokyo. Helped me out with my spark plug issue on my 2019 TPI. Thank you.

What did you think about Amsoil ?
@TokyoOffroad6 жыл бұрын
Amsoil is not easily available in Japan so I've never considered using it. However, I've read and seen various videos about it. Some people swear by it, others advise not to use it. I personally use Motorex Cross Power 2T in my 2019 KTM 250 EXC TPI and 2017 KTM 250 EXC (60:1), as recommended in the manual. When I did a top end overhaul on my 2017 after 145H the piston, rings and cylinder all looked in really good shape and the power valve had minimal deposits. As such I think Motorex Cross Power 2T works well. It's available in most shops in Japan at about $18/liter.
