At the NEC, I went back to this smcr more times than any other bike. Just to sit on it. And of all the 690s from ktm/husky, this is the one I actually want. Great review.

Looks super fun & proves you don't need big power to have fun. Although I hate the dash or lack there of. Just seems so silly to me. KTM had a perfect opportunity to differentiate it a bit more from the 701 & aim for a slightly different but broader market. The dash would really put me off if I was in the market for one.

To answer your question of "why don't other manufacturers make these types of bikes? I don't get it". It's because THEY don't get it! KTM's brass rode the prototype Super Duke and said, "This is crazy! We HAVE to build it!" No other motorcycle company listens to their customers and build what they want like KTM. NONE. BRAAAAP!

Heres the thing, I have 3 bikes, a Panigale 1199, BMW GS1200 adventure and one of these KTM 690 SMCR's I get this bike out more than any other, its a nutter bike and great fun, and very quick you can surprise some sports bike riders with it, KTM should put loads of demonstrators on and they would sell these by the bucket load once people had tried them out, and 75 quid a year fully comp for a bloke in his 50s what more do you need.

Great review LCR. Going to order one!!! Currently have a 2019 KTM 1290 SADV S & 2020 Yamaha MT07. I just want to wheelie and feel fast at lower speeds and have more fun during those sunday morning blasts! But the 690 SMC R are really difficult to buy in Portugal, no dealers have them in stock.

Fantastic review Chopsy, and the bike looks fantastic too. As for the dash, I like the minimalism and it also hopefully won't suffer the same issues the 390 Duke dash has with a waterfall running down the inside of it. Looking forward to the Enduro version review from you! :-)

Thanks for the video. So I am actually on a crossroads now. I have been riding middleweight streetfighters for 3 years now. So I was thinking of getting a new bike. I am going to go either with a big naked like Triumph Speed Triple or a Ducati 1200 Monster but the roads in Russia are crap no matter the tarmac. And also I am a 6'3" knucklehead. And I like to go offroad once in a while but those big enduro bikes are just too heavy for my liking. So here are the questions for you, beg your pardon for the long post: 1) What are your thoughts on the SMCR vs big naked? Will I be able to keep up with the big ones on the highway? Is it enough initial pull to lose the cars on a traffic light? 2) What would you prefer: the SMCR, your 701 or a 500 EXC converted if we are talking about daily use + some offroad? 3) What are your thoughts on SMC Enduro? Can it work on the highway the same as the SMCR with some 60% road 40% dirt tires? Thanks in advance and sorry for the questions. BR Oleg

I just made a deal on one of these bikes I basically got the last one in My local area... I can’t go pick it up yet because there was a recall on the bike... there was 2 bolts on the cam gear that haven’t been torqued properly. And ktm won’t give the dealer the code to unlock it until they do this and send pictures back to ktm to get the code to unlock it.. hopefully this isn’t a sign of things to come other than that I’m pretty excited to ride the thing.

690s and 701’s are a bit more sensitive then other bikes I think lol, my 2018 enduro will hit those falls neutrals if you get sloppy with shifts but I still love the bike especially now with a yoshimura exhaust to make it sound proper

Mark Cummings in my opinion yes, and the sound of the exhaust under quick acceleration and no decibel killer or spark arrestor sounds amazing. I have one clip of my exhaust with just idling as I was in a small park, it’s not on my channel yet but I can post it if you would like. I’m going to get some better clips of it soon

I wonder if they’ve upgraded the fuel pump, my ‘15 690 Enduro R’s fuel pump died at 4500 miles (relatively common issue). KTM turned their back on me as the bike was out of warranty, (I know out... of warranty at 4500 miles, I had just bought it used from a very occasional green laner), cost me £500 to fix. It turned me off KTM 690s for good!... but never say never and all that!

It's just a lower seat. KTM don;t do suspension link kits, etc
