I bought the Soul Red Signature and I could not be any more pleased with this vehicle. The torque and suspension combination are perfection. It feels as though I bought a car priced in the mid $50k range for under $40k.

I bought it on Wednesday. Signature. Eternal Blue. 2.5L turbo. Love it. Test drive tons, walked across the street to a Mazda dealer. Out the door in two hours. Way better driving dynamics than the Toyota, great feature set, better value. Sold. First Mazda.

Oh man I LOVED this video! It was really cool having a "company man" give his 2 cents. Mazdas look so good these days. Inside and out. I agree with you about the need for some contrast with the interior. I think this CX-5 shouldn't cost anymore than $35,000. Any higher than that and I think people will just go badge-shopping. Can't wait for you to review the new Mazda 3 Hatchback. That one has an interior you might really like. ;) British Columbia is a breathtaking place. I especially love Vancouver Island. Some great roads there too. Congrats on the Porsche!!! Cheers man!

Totally agree. the price creep on the CX-5 gets pretty high once you start stacking options. My biggest beef with the interior is that damn infotainment system. Mazda is so stuck on having a system that is grafted into the car. They have also been resistant to allow Android Auto so they can push their own maps program. RE: The new new Mazda3 - The 3 hatch with AWD is going to make the CX-3 irrelevant in every way.

Agreed, just bought GT Reserve Deep Blue Mica, Parchment interior including headliner. Black headliner in Signature seems more confining. Window sticker $35,865 which is $4k more than my 2016. You get more power, more tech and nicer looking SUV. Downside is less range with small 15.3 gallon tank and EPA 27vs30 highway. Infotainment system still needs update but car drives well and power issue has been addressed!

Wife currently drives an ATS 2.0, loved how the CX 5 drove, but didn't have enough power, the signature trim is about perfect for her. We are looking at the XT4, XC60, Macan, etc. When you look at it from that lens, 38k is a bargain.

Anytime you can get Dave Coleman to explain how things work in your video, it just makes the car sound so very impressive! That guy is awesome and makes you feel like you’re getting a kick ass product. We have a CX9 for my wife and I am considering a CX5 as my daily driver....although I was wanting the diesel for its fuel economy.....which looks like it will NEVER come. That little ‘lie’ they keep telling is putting a bad taste in mouth overall but we are happy with our CX9 and I’m sure I’d be just as happy with a CX5.....even without the diesel!

Any video with Dave Coleman is a must-watch! I agree about needing more contrast in the interior, I wish they'd offer the gray seat option the Mazda6 Signature has. I drove the new CX-5 Signature at the LA Auto Show and it's definitely near the top of my list when my lease is up.

I just bought a 19 grand touring with premium package, paid 28,750 out the door. Black on black. Test drove the gtr and the sig honestly they all seemed lively to me speed-wise wasn’t enough of a difference for me to pay 36 -38k for the signiture I also felt like the harder leather would hold up better over time. People now are obsessed with the turbo and forget how great of a car the cx 5 is. It handles better than any suv that I’ve ever driven. Period. It’s fun to drive, I’m never wanting for more power maybe I drive slow but I’ve never once wanted for more power. I drive a rav4 too all the time and to me mine seems faster, handles way better, better interior and so on. But hey don’t get me wrong if 40k was nothing to me I’d get the sig but I was able to get a steal on a non turbo with all the options leather, heated/cooled seats, sunroof, 19” rims, heads up display, folding mirrors, led lights, oh and something I love that Mazda does it looks exactly the same as the sig! Mines sticker was 34 I think but people are so busy obsessing about the turbo that I was able to talk them down like 8 grand. Just something to consider.

Speaking of tactile feel, thank GOD Mazda kept the shift lever and didn't switch to some crap like a rotary dial, or buttons. The shift lever looks good and gives the car that sporty feel on the inside. It is as much a design element as anything else, and it really adds some contrast to the otherwise flat console. It no doubt feels good in the hand and it is simple to use, robust and you won't be confused whether the car is in Park, or in Drive. It just works. Don't ever change it.

I’ve always been a high end badge buyer, and current owner of a couple. After spending time looking into Mazda I find myself questioning those choices. At the end of the day the badge represents ego, way higher maintenance cost, and insurance, and at trade in time your high end badge is worth crap?

Great video, at $36 k it's almost an Acura RDX for less money. I would pick this instantly instead of a fully loaded 2019 Rav4. the cx5 offer is very interesting and it looks quite premium ( better than the mainstream Honda, Toyota or Nissan and almost as good as the premium Acura bmw or Audi) well done !

I just test drove this and it's finally got that oomph many people were looking for last year. The turbo can be had with the GT reserve too, so Signature isn't necessary if you want to save some money there. The signature interior on the 6, CX5 and CX9 are punching way above their class in my opinion. I also sat in the RAV4 and it's a plastic nightmare and was also noticeably louder drive. The Mazda interior is definitely a tick above competition. One of my few gripes with the Mazda CX5 were the seats, they are definitely on the firm side. Infotainment also a little outdated with the graphics, hopefully it'll receive an update soon.

Thank you for sharing that. After looking at SUV CX-5 is my faviourite, even though the trunk is the smallest. I am waiting to see RAV4 and maybe check Harrier (I live in Japan). As CX-5 will serve as a second car for road trips only, I can buy 2.5T and enjoy Japanese mountain roads... I could use some rugged trim as don't need all that leather but like heated and cooled seats and heated steering wheel.

Congrats on the new car. I just test drove one today. What do you think of the auto engine start/stop? That's the only neg I hear about the car (it has to be turned off after each restart). I didn't know to check this and they must have turned it off for my test drive. Interested in your thoughts.

Thanks, for the reply. The new car is great. You can check, but I don't believe this Mazda CX-5 has auto engine start/stop in it. I think it has 2 cylinder deactivation. Overall it's a great value for the price. The parking sensors come in handy in my small garage. I am getting 21.7 MPG after my first fill up. The power is nice and smooth and you can feel the torque when you need it. The new leather is nice and soft, but a little too dark. It should be a lighter color brown or saddle, as MotoMan says in his video.

I traded in my 2018 Honda Accord Touring 2.0Turbo for the 2019 CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve. I have never looked back. Sure the Honda is quicker at 0-60 but hands down the CX-5 is much more luxurious, better fit and finish, and the Bose sound system is incredibly clear with deep base sounds and no distortion. I drove every other car in it's class and they are no where close in looks, features, drive, acceleration and looks.

About the cost: I think $38,000 is really getting to the point where it’s generally going to be Mazda fans who are upgrading from another that are drawn to the nicer interior to go with the driving dynamics they already appreciate. I have a 2014 Mazda 6 manual by the way. If the new engine came with a six speed I personally would love that, but I’m broken.

I test drove a CX-5 GT Reserve 5 days ago, and I thought I would experience much more "push you back in the seat" torque than I experienced. When I drove the CX-9 last year, I experienced more of that (even though that car is heavier and had the same engine). I would really like to have seen the option for the 360 camera and parking sensors below the Signature level. The CX-5 has a different philosophy than the CX-9 for Signature. The 9 is all about material upgrades, whereas the 5 is both material upgrades AND feature upgrades.
@Ichibuns

The price is actually fantastic. To get anything similar from the entry level "luxury" brands would cost waaay more. You really are just paying for the badge at this point. Love this car but question: where is the engine temp gauge? I didn't see one, maybe within the Mazda iDrive system? There are 2 things I don't like about it even though I love it for the most part. The first one is the center console arm rest seems too short. I like how Toyota did theirs with the RAV4, hopefully next one they fix it. The second, I wish for the Reserve/Signature models there was an option for a larger media screen.

I was all set to get the Signature but the dark interior was not to my liking. I'll probably go with the Reserve due to that. I also was pretty shocked at the resolution of that 360 camera on the signature. My husband had a CX5 2016 and while I liked it, the turbo really appeals to me as does the changes they have made with the ride.

If the torque falls off dramatically at higher rpm then that is a problem when passing at 60 mph. If this is true then the increased torque usefulness is limited to low speed situations. This is good for on ramp merging, around town driving, and overcoming a/c drag at low speeds. But for high speed passing it's not much help. Am I correct?
@marketingmajor8126
@marketingmajor8126 5 жыл бұрын
Reminds of me of some of the Diesels I've driven. Same issue with gobs of low end torque and then drop off at higher RPM's although in diesels the RPM's don't go very high anyhow but I can see that you have a point. What if you are on the freeway, or highway going up a long ascent and need to pass lanes quickly? I can imagine with that torque drop off things might get kinda tricky. Personally.. with 250 hp in that small of a vehicle, I would have rather had even torque across the board, since 250 hp @ for example 247 torque would still have been plenty of torque low down or maybe just a tad bit more early on, but I mean it's not like people are gonna drag race this thing anyhow lol. Passing power at highway speeds is much more useful of a thing not to mention a safety issue.

I feel like the cx-7 has been forgotten completely here. Awd, 244hp and a 2008 MSRP of $28,000 fully loaded. Was the market just not ready and now it's time for the cx-5? It just seems weird to me how these two vehicles can be received on opposite spectrums.

Thanks for a revelatory review. The insights into the suspension tweaks and luxury features are valuable. I'm buying the "Soul Red" CX 5 GT Reserve in October. It has 95% of the Signature's goodies for thousands less. Having test driven the GT Reserve and having scared my salesman a bit with that drive I learned something. The test drive made me wish the Stability Control did not come in so early. It's a nanny I don't need at that level. Maybe it needs an "Oh SHIT!" sensor that brings Stability Control in only when those words are uttered at speed. ;o) But the speed, handling, level of refinement and exterior styling all combine to tell me that I "need" this SUV. I know it will be even more fun to drive than my former 2007 Toyota RAV4 3.5 L. V6 which was just as fast as this turbo CX 5 but thirstier. So... are the prices for the two AWD/turbo models too high? Nope. High priced but doable in light of what a comparably equipped 2019 Acura RDX would cost - but with BETTER styling.

George, great review and fantastic Mazda. The CX5's biggest problem is the existence of the Acura RDX because for $38k, you're getting into a different class of vehicle with the RDX, albeit a base model. $40K would be great if they could give us 300 HP and 360+ ft-lbs of torque - with The prestige package. Still, the lower spec'd turbo models now are competition for some of the CPO/gently driven models from more expensive competitors. Reliability and warranty with good performance or- Luxury, great performance that is 2 or 3 years older and will likely cost far more to maintain? At least the turbo CX can now be considered when seeking a reasonable proper vehicle 😉

I think 38K is getting to be too expensive because it's still based on an economy SUV. For example I'd rather have a basic Acura RDX with super handling AWD for 39K. Sure you don't get all of the bells and whistles but you get a better SUV overall. Better Engine, four wheel drive system. transmission, larger sunroof and much more.

In the fancy badge category, what currently competes with this? The GLA/QX30 is old and doesn't look to be getting the A-class update until 2020. The X1/X2 seem pretty comparable at a lot more money for even a hint of the options in this. The XT4 is overpriced amongst the badges and suspect will be discounted at dealers (I should ask, but I've been a bit upset with my family member who runs a Cadillac dealership). The Volvo seems a better option for more money, but I'm not sure it is significantly better. On the non-badge end, I drove a new Rav4 rental for a week just 2 weeks ago and it was garbage. Yes, I'm a bit spoiled, but it was nowhere near on par with the Hyundais I've driven. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why so many people buy them other than for the Toyota reputation. The seats were uncomfortable, the handling made me think it would flip if I got a bit too eager with my turn in and the materials made me think of those toys that come in eggs. The only good thing was the active cruise worked better than previous Camry I had rented...although still not useful in stop and go traffic.

This guy doesn’t understand how turbos work at all. Mazda uses a smaller turbo... so it loses efficiency quicker with rpm but spoils faster. Has nothing to do with fuel economy. It blows hotter air at higher rpm. Most turbos have a peaky torque curve. Flat torque curve turbos generally are tuned to not take advantage of their torque at peak efficiency.

I agree with the last comment by Stinger430. After $35,000, it gets edgy on other new car purchase options. Getting closer to $40,000 MSRP I would take a long look at something like a VW Golf R, believe it or not, which is just as luxurious, has 4-motion AWD, does 0-60 in under 5 seconds and has almost as much cargo space (53.7 cu ft.) behind the 2 front seats as the CX 5. I haven't driven either but I suspect the Golf R would easily out handle the CX-5 Turbo. The VW with a 6 year, 72,000 mile warranty also has double the bumper to bumper warranty of the Mazda. VW dealers are notorious though for not discounting the R at all. So there is that factor. Just above $40K there sits the Audi Q5 and the Acura RDX AWD with Technology Package with more horsepower, luxury badge and longer warranty. So Mazda has the price about right just where it is. I would want to get the out the door price down to $33,000 to $34,000 on either the Reserve or Signature to feel good about the purchase. Since the seats are such a dark brown, I would probably just take a Reserve with black leather interior and save the difference. The Reserve has everything I need. I would't feel cheated. The CX-5 is all around gorgeous especially in the red color, a paint color upgrade worth paying for. Mazda did a really great job. I can't find much I would change but I agree with you that it needs slightly more color contrast on the leather and wood on the Signature. Not too much, just more than it has. I'm glad that they didn't use much piano black on the interior. That can look really tacky and like trying too hard. I'm very happy that Mazda opted to not go with a panoramic sunroof. The smaller normal size sunroof looks cooler...and is cooler, literally, in warm states like Florida and is much less likely to have structural and mechanical issues, rattling and leaking like many of the panoramic sunroofs. I wince every time I see a car journalist on KZbin pine for a panoramic sunroof. Complain, complain, complain. It is better not to overreach on some things and having a huge sliding glass panel panoramic sunroof is one of those things. Just browse the forums of different manufacturer models with pano roofs to see how many owners complain about their roofs rattling and pictures of wet headliners after their new pano roof leaked all over. I am happy to see that these reviews of the CX-5 happened in the middle of a snowstorm. I am really impressed how this thing goes through heavy slush and powder with no problem. I am aware it has 4 snow tires fitted for these videos in Canada, but still, it's impressive to see.

As a Gen 1 CX-5 driver, Gen 2 has gotten way more expensive in my mind. I payed $25k for my CX-5 Touring. I can get a Touring in Gen 2, sure, but except for being a "nicer" car, for more money, it actually performs worse than my Gen 1 with the same 2.5L NA. For a turbo upgrade, it's basically $10k more than I spent for mine. No. I am not on board with that, and really gen 2 as a whole. If the turbo trickles down to perhaps the rest of the trim lineup, maybe minus a Sport, then it might be compelling. At the moment though, there is zero reason for me to spring for a Gen 2 if I want to pay a similar amount (albeit a bit more) that I payed for my Gen 1 since aside from being nicer, without the turbo it performs actually worse than mine, and I remember Mazda as the Zoom Zoom brand, not the faux luxury brand they want to be now.
