Going through my private playlist and found this video. Have to say that this video pushed me to make the decision of buying a 2021 CX-5. It's almost 3 years from now and I'm still satisfied with it.

No way, I wouldn't want open-pore wood, this type of wood in the CX-5 is known as 'sen wood', which is meant to be subtle and not to stand out on its own but to accentuate the rest of the cabin. It's a Japanese wood, for a car designed by a Japanese company, that is still made in Japan. As a side note, your channel is one of the few where you actually take the time and effort to give a proper presentation on the car. You don't stumble on words, you don't rush them out just to fill the silence, and all of it sounds like it was written well ahead of time and rehearsed before going on camera. We really appreciate the effort you put on all your videos!

Alex, I am 6’3” mid 200s in weight and am quite comfortable in this vehicle. Love the turbo. On the open highway I get close to the 30mph. If I could add one thing it would be to increase the fuel tank size on the Turbo versions. ( 2 gallons more ) From an enthusiasts driver point of view this maybe one of the most engaging CUVs for those of us who really like to drive. I have said it before and will say it again here...the CX5 family of CUVs has almost something for everyone of us who is an enthusiastic driver and at an affordable price point. They are stylish, sporty, fun to drive, reliable, safe, and that on occasion one can take off the beaten path.

I love Mazda too but I prefer Toyota because of its guaranteed reliability. I know Mazda has been pretty good but Toyota is a no risk purchase. I also feel that Toyota’s interior is just right

@@huskydinosaur2860: I hope you're right about the 2020 Ford Escape because Consumer Reports has proved through much testing thousands of customer reviews that that mode (style) vehicle has been rated very low for reliability and customer satisfaction in past years. I refuse to buy any Ford vehicles where I live because they have all been substandard, and our dealership's customer service is horrible and dishonest. I was once a big supporter of Ford cars, SUV's and trucks, but no longer.

I have the top of the line non-turbo 2018 CX5 and the car is an amazing value for the money. Like one other youtuber claimed many times, Mazdas have the best transmissions out of any brand and any car up to $60,000. I do agree. The transmission in the car is out of this world and completely makes the car what it is - and now with the Turbo, it should be the blast to drive too. Although coming from a 306 HP car to this 186 HP car, believe it or not, is not a massive downgrade. This car is also extremely quiet and behaves very well with the power it has. Both the transmission and the noise levels are better than my $60k Lexus GS. I also love the simple black and white design in the car console. No color other than the entertainment screen. Simple and elegant. The seats are not super comfortable and they are tiny for anyone with an actual butt (side patting will bother you thies). Any other car you look into, whether it's a Nissan Rouge, Rav 4 or pick a different brand, has a wider seating area in the seats. And I am not a fat person by any means (6 ft, 175 pounds) and it's clear the seats were originally made for Asian market/people. The gas mileage is 27 avarage which is not the best, but its on regular. RDX will be $15-17k more to buy ($250+ more to lease) and takes premium fuel. Insurance cost is very low on the CX5 too compared to RDX. Lastly, I never ever touched the touch screen as the toggle near the arm rest is very good and my Lexus didn't have a touch screen either so I got used to it. If you would not tell people its a touch screen, they would not know or need it. The entertainment design (what you see on the screen) is better in the Mazda compared to a Lexus, although the sound system was better sounding in the Lexus. Sound is only bass and trebble in the Mazda, not mids. Very weird. As long as you don't expect Subaru AWD capability and amazing seating, it's the best car in the segment. I am paying $349 with 0 down and 12k miles a year on a lease (I could not get a RDX below $700 on a lease). I would not buy any Korean car over this, and never buy a GM product. Honda has currently issues with oil consumption and Toyota will not be as quiet and elegant compared to Mazda. This car is in a class of its own because, again, transmission. If the seating bothers you after a test drive, see if you can get the CX9. That car is a gem.

Even though I ended up getting the CR-V, I thought the CX-5 was very compelling and a very close 2nd. It's definitely the prettiest car in its class inside and out, and it's the most fun to drive. Unlike you, I actually liked the seats a lot, but that can be subjective. For me the CX-5's weak spot was the infotainment system. I couldn't figure out how to save a radio station, and the salesperson couldn't either. I think it was a mistake to disable the touch screen while driving. If you use Apple CarPlay, a lot of programs are designed for touch screen. I'd hate to think about using Waze and Spotify, for instance, without touch screen. Still, I'm surprised the CX-5 isn't a top 5 seller in America. It's #1 in Australia, so apparently the Aussies appreciate it. It definitely belongs at or near the top of its class.

How is Mazda reliability? My mother is looking for a smaller SUV and hates "those 4 cylinders" because she thinks anything not a V6 is slow. I've been pushing for her to get one of these as it'll have the V6 grunt and she loves wood trim, but the Kia Sportage has a much longer warranty. I told her it won't be an issue as her current vehicle only has 50k miles on it so she doesn't put huge miles on her vehicles. Most miles she has had on a car is like 80k over 10 years. Powertrain is the biggest concern. So built to last?

Gruntsworth Mazda builds there cars and SUV for people that love driving. The build quality is amazing. They have excellent power and amazing gas mileage. I have owned many, CX5 and Mazda 3 that we have now. Never any issues.

When comparing this to the Honda CRV, yes, the honda has more room. But, what I havent heard any journalist talk about is the 1.5l engine failure that so many owners are experiencing. And initially, coporate Honda denying any problems and continuing to sell a vehicle with a bad engine. Hoorah for Mazda!!!

If I have to guess the journalists probably signed the NDA to prevent them from talking about anything currently in investigation or have not been recalled / settled. Alex and others can only use general terms such as reliability but cannot use something specific. Not like the freedom that Scotty has. Also Alex, as other journalists, are focusing on the initial quality of newly released vehicles. Which makes them not in the position to talk about reliability issues.

What I'm trying to say this guy questions a Mazda if it'll last 10 years but my 25 year old Mazda 323 is still alive and refined. point defense, I have no idea how this car rides. I don't even want to test drive it because it is just not a good looking SUV at all. It does not even look like an SUV. Not much leg room in the rear as well as head room. Imagine, a hump in the back seat. How dated. The car looks like a hatchback to me. I am going with the CRV. Good looking, spacious, nice interior, and not everybody has the oil problem. The CRV has a nice ride and is pretty peppy. The only thing with the CRV is the stereo sucks. The car manufacturers nickel and dime you with everything. Fuc**** rip off.

Bought my 2019 CX5 Grand Touring on Sunday. Couldn't be happier. Test drove the Lexus, and it was nice, but couldn't justify the huge price jump. Didn't get to drive the Acura RDX but that one was even pricier by all accounts so same issue there. Thanks for the help in making my decision Alex! Best reviewer I've seen.

I just bought a 2019 with the Touring trim. I test drove the turbo model, and I loved the extra power, but the Grand Touring Reserve, which is the cheaper trim with the turbo engine, would have cost me about 6000 more than the Touring. I just couldn't justify the extra cost on top of the worse fuel economy just to get the turbo engine. There are some other extras like the heads-up display, but nothing I couldn't do without. And the non-turbo CX-5 still has more power and better handling than the 4-cylinder Camry it replaced, so I'm still having a blast driving it. Thank you very much for your detailed reviews. They really helped me zero in on a winner, and it was the CX-5!

Christopher Nasca I bought the Touring trim with the preferred options package and red paint, which was an up-charge. I got it for 26,400, plus tax. Everything else was included (delivery, tag, title, etc.). I think I got a good deal.

Mazdas have now swept all of us (re my family)into its luxury looks and likeability. We have 3 Mazdas 3Sdn(2017) 3Hb(2018) 6 Sport(2017).(We transitioned from our Corolla, Camry) Kept my distance from their models since 1990 and have been converted since 2017. Have been recommending friends ever since with some success. Boot space was a concern at the start of all these mazdas but once we got our first mazda we found it silly to procrastinate, with driving safety our biggest joys and happiness. Thank you mazda.

After test driving the GS/GX I was about to leave the dealership to think about it, then the salesman threw me the keys to the 2019 GT Turbo with a smirk on his face. I knew I would buy it before getting to the first set of lights. What a difference the Turbo makes!

My daughter looked at the CX5 and the Honda CR-V. She chose the Mazda (looks, feel, size). She says that it is still one of the larger vehicles in her L. A. office parking lot! Sometimes smaller is better.

@@roberta.lofgrenjr.9182 Yeah, I personally sat in and drove both. It's often hard to know what vehicle is the right size. If you have kids or need to transport things generally bigger is better. If you don't have kids and 99% of your driving is to work then you really don't need a big vehicle. Here, I like the CX5 as it's more of a personal sized car and drives very nicely. The CR-V is also fine but the size is a bit high

@@10tenman10 Well, Both are considered small SUV"S. I don't like anything too small, we'll that did not sound right, I meant when you are in a car. The CRV is spacious. You are not cramped. Good amount of leg room in front and rear. The Mazda CX5 looked tight in the back seat, plus the big hump in the middle.

I own a 2019 Cx-5 signature model. It is by far the best in class. Main reasons, three things. All other vehicles in its class can offer what the CX-5 offers. However,they can’t offer the design, the turbo and the handling, which is a Mazda staple.

I've had the 2019 Reserve Turbo since May of 19, and I haven't had any issues. It's fun to drive and handles well. I'm actually averaging 25 mpg in combo city/highway. My only negative comment is that I wish the infotainment system booted up quicker. I don't need to see a warning sign every time I start the vehicle.

Me too. 6AT should be reliable, since it is a simple unit. The big torque from bottom revs will make it a very comfortable car do drive. I don't trust belt/chain CVTs to be reliable while doing a lot of engine breaking - I need to be able to do that while driving in the mountains.

I took the turbo cx5 for a test drive today and was surprised (based on all the great reviews) how unrefined the Mazda 5 drove. Suspension felt bumpy, bouncy and still suv like with average steering response. The seats are WAY to firm and very uncomfortable. My girlfriend took this test drive with me and completely agreed. We were both nauseas after 25 minute ride. Not the test drive we were expecting. Will likely go with rav4 xse due to nicer interior, much better fuel economy, better overall ride, much comfier seats, and higher expected reliability. I'll also say the Volvo xc40 has been BY FAR our fav test drive. T5 engine matches this turbo Mazda and suspension is MUCH more refined. Yes I know it's a luxery compact SUV and $10000 more but the difference between cx5 and xc40 is night & day. Enthusiasts that can afford the xc40 I highly suggest taking one for a test drive.

Thanks. Very few of the reviews mention the significant driving problems of the CX-5. Just the poor positioning of the center console cup holders shows inattention to detail and the promise of unpleasant driving moments over time. On the other hand, I don't know what SUVs James drives, but the ones used in our family, ranging from Acura to Highlander are excellent road cars. Mentioning the seats being WAY too firm and very uncomfortable comes up often enough to make the CX-5 a narrow miss for this shopper. The manufacturers miss an opportunity in not updating their two door coupé style with state of the art technology. Many of us shoppers don't need or even want an uncomfortable or restrictive second row. We need a clever use of storage and transport space and somewhere for on the road amenities, a travel desk, a small refer, not just a champagne bottle cooler, yeah we take home from good restaurants and shop at a distance for gourmet foods. I learned of the advantage of such designed spaces in a coach built Commer purchased in London in 1970. In many ways it was the most useful car sized vehicle I have ever seen. The rise in consumer interest shown in SUV and Crossover sales has not had a commensurate response from the manufacturers, nor much insight from those who choose to review for public enlightenment. If an oven were the best way to toast bread we would not need to keep toasters alive and well. Vehicles do not have to be everything to all people, and the variation in capability should go beyond mpg and driver comfort and passenger capacity. Pet owners still must consider an add on and then deal with the terrible issues of overheating interiors and unsafe containers. On and on the co grows, but not much thought is penetrating design rooms.

Why comparing this to RDX ? RDX costs $10k more. CX-5’s 6 speed transmission is superb and smooth that doesn’t need an extra cog. With 310 lbs-ft torque, it does not need to down shift as often as other 8 or 9 speed transmission.

A lot of people cross-shop these two models. I did. I ultimately decided that I really liked the RDX, but it was just a little more than I wanted to spend. But the CX-5 was the natural solution. A notch down in features and price, but in the same vein.

Where are you coming up with $10k? MSRP: RDX $37,400 CX-5 Signature MSRP: $36,890.. If you can find a Grand Touring Reserve, that would be MSRP: $34,870 so at most we're talking $2620 and in reality only $510. If I'm comparing stickers on in stock inventory near me, RDX: $39,400 , CX5: $37,885 ($1515). I want to get excited about the CX-5 Turbo, but it's priced too high.

Great insights into the CX-5. I've had my eye on it for a while and now I want it even more. The show host really knows his vehicles inside and out. He uses the word "actually" as a filler word a lot, even when the comment isn't surprising. (maybe that's a millennial thing?)

The CX 5 Turbo models' 19 wheels will easily accommodate 245/50/19 tires, which I will add for the better braking and handling when the OEM tires wear out.

I test drove a Signature and really liked the car except that I felt the drivers seat was too hard and too short front to back. The firmness may have been due to the chilly day and the newness of the seats but that does not explain the lack of thigh support. Anyone have this concern? I see Alex gave the front seats a 9/10.

After testing the Honda CR-V EX, Mazda CX-5 Touring, Nissan Rogue SV, and Hyundai Santa Fe SEL, I decided to get the Honda CR-V, but the Mazda CX-5 was a very close second. The CX-5 was the best looking inside and out and had the most refined driving feel. I really felt that it was about a half step into the luxury class. However, the CR-V was not that far behind in interior and driving feel, and I liked the extra room, fuel economy, and just the fact that it's a Honda. I also preferred the touch screen infotainment system on the CR-V over the Mazda's which I found cumbersome and would have preferred a touch screen while driving. I find that especially with Apple Carplay a touch screen is very nice and I use it a lot. My girlfriend still bothers me about not picking the Mazda because that was her favorite. Alex did mention that aftermarket you can enable the touch screen while moving, which may have sealed the deal for me with Mazda had I known about it. BTW I was aware of the oil dilution controversy with the CR-V. I live in Florida so I didn't worry about it, and my CR-V appears to warm up very quickly.

i bought the grand touring reserve....traded in my 2017 outback 3.6r...i absolutely love driving it!! the only complaints i have to this point is it has a small fuel tank (15.2g) fuel mileage is at 18.5mpg...but i do drive it kinda hard....overall though ill take this over the subie any day!!

@Blair Thiessen i had the 2017 i had many issues with the infotainment system did not care for the cvt...everytime i started the car it would reset my xm channel to the preview channel...and when i would hit next channel it would select random channels...also did not like the brakes i thought they were way to spongee...the subie is a great car...just not my cup of tea

for me, the front looks disproportionately long in profile-Mazda could lengthen the cab to fix this with additional benefit of larger cargo room and more rear seat room. The cx5 interior dash doesn’t appeal, but the cx9 dash/door actually looks good with seemingly minor tweaks in the lines.

Thanks, for a great video review. I've been waiting for your full test video since your shorter in the snow drive last month. I've been waiting on the 2019 model since the Fall and was hoping for the new changes, mainly a change in the GT wheel design and the addition of brown Nappa leather seat color. The turbo wasn't that big of a deal for me. I would opt for the GT with the premium package if it had come with the brown Nappa seats. As it was, I was going to wait until spring , but after a test drive 2 weeks before Christmas with my Wife (& Chief Financial Officer), we made a deal and bought a Soul Red 2019 GT Signature model. I love it so far. It's like a Starship compared to my old 07 Mazda 6i 5-door. My only quibbles are; 1. The brown leather is a little to dark. 2. The price was a little higher than I was hoping for and 3. The gas mileage is not as high so far (it still has less than 1,000 miles in Michigan winter driving) as I would like. The added power is great and the 360 degree camera and parking sensors are great to have. Thanks again for the great reviews.

As usual an excellent review, Alex. Full of detail and insights that aren't offered by others. A few comments. () Engine/Drivetrain. Of the vehicles (CX-5, CX-9, Mazda6, and in non-American markets, the CX-8) where Mazda offers their turbo4 , I think the most successful application is probably the CX-5. The Mazda6 trails both the Accord and Camry (top trim) rivals in performance and interior room. The CX-9 sacrifices both interior space and smooth, linear performance against its V6 competition. The CX-5 also sacrifices interior room against its competition but its performance is a major plus compared to the mainstream compact rivals. It's true that Mazda trails the competition in terms of the race to provide the most individual gears but the turbo4's massive torque covers a variety of sins and the six speed transmission is undoubtedly adequate even though it hurts fuel economy to some extent. () Styling. Like the CX-9 and Mazda6, the CX-5 has earned almost universal praise for its looks. But Alex is the only reviewer I've seen who pinpoints the reason for those looks, the long, long hood and the hood-to-body ratio of each vehicle. It's a styling decision that designers have employed for about a hundred years in sports cars and sedans to suggest potency and performance. A cynic might argue that a cheaper and more effective solution for the need it satisfies is a Viagra prescription. But far be it from me to suggest that. () Utility. The "U" in SUV stands for "utility." And Mazda's styling choices significantly shortchanges that priority. The sacrifice is nowhere near as great as in the CX-9 where interior passenger room and cargo space trails the "tweener" (Goldilocks) category that includes the Kia Sorento and the Hyundai Santa Fe even though the CX-9 is nearly a foot longer. But the CX-5 still offers far less overall cargo space and passenger room than a CR-V as well as several other of its rivals. Alex says he'd be willing to lose 25% of the overall cargo space compared to a CR-V and he's probably not alone. But those who don't have a Dodge Durango sitting in the garage as an option to haul cargo and passengers may have a different take on giving up utility for style and performance. () Overall. The CX-5 is Mazda's best selling model in the US. The option of a turbo4/AWD should boost those sales. But there are some compelling alternatives including the Subaru Forester with greater utility for less money and the Hyundai Santa Fe in a larger "tweener" category at about the same price.

You cant expect from Mazda on 20K lower budget to build and design a car that will be richer in and out than 20K more expencive Acura . Just be fair here , it is a comparission that sets up failure for much less expencive Mazda. But you can ask much more valid question, imagine what would Mazda build for 55K usd ??? I can bet money it would be amazing and much better design than Honda/Acura can muster....

That's an overly positive opinion of the Mazda CX-5. What about the BMW X-3, Audi SQ5, Mercedes GLC and Jaguar F-Pace? These are much nicer than the Mazda. Not even close. They are just quite a bit more expensive.

I’m really liking the current Mazda lineup. So much so I can’t decide what to buy. Torn between the cx5 gt with turbo, Mazda 6 gt with the turbo, or a Mazda3 sport gt with a manual transmission. I honestly love all three and can not decide. Cx5 is the most practical the 3 is the most fun and the 6 is the the middle ground. They are all beautiful inside and out. I’m a fan of the scroll wheel. Been testing a lot of the competition and can’t find anything out there that compares with the quality and looks and driving dynamics of Mazda at the moment. I don’t understand why they don’t have a larger share of the market.

They shouldn't. One is a sedan other is a CUV. I took the CX5 because of a) ground clearence - I always manages to scrape my front bumber in parking lots with sedans and b) AWD. The 6 doesn't have AWD yet.

Tested both recently, the 6 just has too much torque steer with the turbo. I thought it would comparable to a 3 series or C-class but without AWD it just isn't. The CX-5 has AWD and is a much better drive with this engine & power band.

Ross Headley this unit ran about $36k. It is a value given the amazing it has every feature available except for 360 camera, Nappa leather and parking sensors. The fit and finish exceeded my 2018 Accord Touring by a mile. Not even close. This car drive far better than the Honda and with the 2.5L turbo that provides 310 lb feet of torque that car is a rocket.

It's the cutest but it is a LOT smaller than CRV and RAV 4 in real terms beyond the specs. Rear seat passenger room is compromised, trunk is at least 25% less space. That's a lot of compromising to look cool in your grocery getter...

I think the cx-5 is now my ideal cuv. I'm usually a sedan person mainly cause I like the lower center of gravity but... the mazda is fast, handles well, gets similar mpg as my subaru legacy, has larger storage than my sedan and the transmission is a solid 6 speed. I dont need 30-40mpg... I rather have a transmission that only shifts when I need it and will last a long time. These cvts and 8/9 speeds take forever to gear hunt and it drives me nuts. Not to mention mazda reliability has much improved over the years

I find the comfort ratings surprising. I'm really thin, but I've noticed the seats in the CX-5 are very narrow, and the side bolstering a bit hard in places. Also, the center console seems to take up way too much space.

The CR-V turbo has major engine problems with oil dilution from gas passing the rings. This will probably lead to accelerated wear on the engine.

I'll probably get this or an XC40 PHEV later this year. In Puerto Rico you get a tax exemption for plug in hybrids/battery vehicles, so loaded top-config Mazda is about $40k and loaded top-config Volvo is $47k (or a 5-10k mile used loaded XC60 T8 for $55k). Thanks for the great review!

A Honda CR-V has 589 litres of cargo space, a rav 4 has 580 litres, a Skoda Karoq has 520 litres, a VW Tiguan has 615 litres and a CX5 has 506 litres, these are all in standard form and none of them are anywhere near 25% larger than the CX5 the biggest bid the Tiguan at just over 20% larger but the rav4 and CRV, it’s main competitors, are both around 15% larger in this aspect.

Kudos, Mazda. That said, I cannot get past the proportions of the wheels to wheel openings. In every image and view, the wheels simply look too small to support the design decision. It’s a compromise that doesn’t work.

I agree that the CX-5 is the top pick, particularly if one liked what they have to offer. From viewing, feeling and driving it myself, it’s a winner. As long as those who can pull their head out of ... their disposition of having to be seen in a luxury German or Japanese or other product, this vehicle like many Mazdas are as good if not better and it’s manufactured in Japan (QC; reliability). It’s true I chose a 2019 Santa Fe 2.0L, over this fantastic vehicle, yet only because I accept the SFe for being a little more roomy and rear under floor storage hat suits my specific needs and yes cost about $1200 more than the natural 2.5L CX-5 equivalent. My understanding is that both brands have predictive AWD (i.e. HTRAC / iActiv). Finally, after driving a 2019 RAV4, it unfortunately is no match against this CX-5 in my opinion and Toyota continues to hold out on options (some Safety too) by comparison, unless you buy the top trim.

If Mazda ever discovers the concept of interior ROOM (that center console's a knee banger, etc. and I'm a measly 5'6"142 lbs.) I'd seriously consider it. Also important to note that extra HP comes only with Premium gasoline (Consumers Union criticised the Subaru Forester XT because it also preferred premium, and the XT's now gone)

The guy in this video says this CX5 is faster than the CRV when in reality the CRV is faster, but I'm buying the CX5 for its quality and performance (I love the way it drives). I test drove and diligently compared the 2019 Subaru Forester, Nissan Rogue, Honda CRV, VW Tiguan, and the Mazda CX5. The Mazda stands above the others in my humble estimation, and meets my wants in a car. The guy did recommend getting wider and larger aftermarket tires... how much would that change things for the CX5?
