Finally took a trip down to Mexico to put my 2019 Mustang GT Performance Pack 1 up against a 2018 Camaro SS (2SS). Solid runs both cars are quick but the Mustang pulls harder up top and comes away with the W.

I have a 2018 GT manual and my girlfriend has a 2021 Camaro SS. The Camaro is faster from a dig by about a car length. Any rolls from 60MPH and it’s pretty even and once you get above 90MPH the Mustang will start to pull ahead.

I have a 2016 Camaro SS and I’ve raced a 18 5.0 mustang and from a dig I got him, off of every roll I’d have the lead for a while and then like the video he’d get me top end but at a lot higher speed then these guys. Both cars are awesome!

I’ve owned both. I went from a 2018 ss to a 2019 RTR GT both manual transmission. The torque in the Camaro is insane but the high revving mustang is crazy too.. long story short they both will get it. Traded the Mustang for a 2020 2ss with the a10 and it feels like a rocket.

The Camaro’s torque advantage makes it a better track car, in my opinion. The Mustang definitely has more top end power, but that only really becomes an advantage on long straights. The Camaro would more than make that time up in the corners since it can burst faster out of the turns. As a street car, though, that Mustang is an absolute killer - especially in roll races. Also, thanks for not being an obnoxious douche like MotorTube. This was a great video, and it’s enjoyable to listen to you talk about cars.

I would disagree with that notion. Added torque promotes oversteer coming out of corners on the track. I would take the coyote power delivery for track days. That's why Ford chose a flat plane crankshaft for the gt350.

@@robertkington2084 I wouldn't disagree with that notion. Chevy has that Alpha chassis on point to handle all of that extra torque with no problems at all. The SS is a beast on the track and the car is squared away and not tail happy in that venue. The 2018 Camaro SS 1LE is also faster than a 2019 Mustang GT PP2 on a road course as well. This is coming from someone who owns both of these cars. The torque is a huge advantage coming out of turns when the suspension and chassis is dialed in, which is something Chevy did to the 6th gen Camaro from that factory. I would also take a ZL1 all day over a GT350 since they're both in the same price range and you get way better performance from the ZL1, if you're a car guy who likes taking new cars to the road course that is.

The mustang is much faster 0-130mph look it up . Car and driver tested it over 20x and the mustang won every single time . Mustang makes power from 3500rpms to 7500rpms and the camaro is 3500 to 6300rpms and it falls off .

This outcome was expected. More torque from the big liter V8 camaro jumps in front, but the better breathing, higher revving DOHC 5.0 gets him on the top end. I like the excuses saying the camaro driver kept "letting out" on the top end. He did that on the first race, but it was clear he stayed in it for the other 4 races and it's easy to see he gets passed every time even by his own admission so the excuses arent warranted. This is just the nature of these two different V8 designs. DOHC breathes better than pushrod giving it better power in the upper rpm range while having less displacement. The pushrods have better low end torque due to higher displacement and that is seen in the outcome of these races. Of course there are other factors like vehicle weight and aerodynamics that play a role as well. And lastly.....you guys are getting it wrong. The camaro is not faster. The camaro is quicker. The mustang is faster. If you dont know the difference between those two statements then you dont know anything about racing and should educate yourself before making inaccurate statements.

The SS guy has added a 1LE style spoiler. It’s designed for track twist downforce but sacrifices top end speed. GT does have better high end due to greater HP, but it wouldn’t normally be so noticeable. Also seemed SS driver was timid at high speeds. Both cars are sick!

I know , I came out of a wreck , flipped in a tree with a car load of us and I was the survivor. Everyone is talking about the Mexican could not drive , dude , they were stock cars !!!! I would believe the new Car and Driver article more than this (the camaro beat the mustang FYI).... THUMBS UP regardless, almost bought a 2017 ZL1, then thought about a 2018 GT350, (test drove both) then sat in and drove a 2019 RS3 and RS5, (just traded in my 2016 S3 APR stage 2 for a RS3), and the Audi RS3, stock, feels just so much better as compared to both of the American V8 behemoths around curves; and honestly, in a straight line as well (plus the RS5 was TOO damn much but was a BEAST [porsche engine clone anyone???] :D ). A lot of people in the comments saying the guy in the camaro let out because he wasn’t comfortable with how fast they were going. So not only does the GT slowly reel in the Camaro, but the PP1’s suspension allows the GT to feel a lot more stable at higher speeds. I can testify as a fellow Gen 3 coyote PP1 owner

The reason Mustang has top end is because it’s DOHC vs the Camaro is Pushrod and makes more low end torque and actually falls off on the top end

Uhh, you do realize the stock 2018 SS makes the same hp and torque right? They are the same number give or take parasitic loss And yes as others have said that camaro let off the gas at the end, you were not pulling on him head to head from the start, even at your higher RPMs. The camaro's torque power band is between about 3000 and about 5000 rpms HP doesn't kick in on the camaros until you reach 120mph. 30-120 he will take you to gapplebees stock vs stock Especially if it is the A8/A10

The reason why the Mustang is catching up on the top end is because the Camaro has a wicker bill spoiler. This is a race track spoiler meant to add more downforce to the car. After 70 mph it will definitely start having an effect on top end acceleration. I believe it's over 100 pounds(+ or - a little) of downforce at 100 mph. Race would be much better if he had the OEM wing designed specifically for the car.

It could aslo be the gearing in the rear end too! Wonder what gearing both cars have? If the stang has the 3.15's or 3.31's that could be why it takes a minute to catch up!

It's a Performance Pack 1 GT, so being a manual, it comes with 3.73 gears. The 10 speed auto Performance Pack (which is what I have) has 3.55 gears. Not sure what the Camaros come with.
