It's very small details. If someone is a 16th early you can hear it. Some of it is stick height dynamics, the other part is adding movement and trying not to drag the tempo. That section of music had a lot of challenging rudimental elements that tire you out pretty quickly so this is also conditioning through and past your limits. It's a great video.

Rob Ferguson.....I got to hear him speak quite a lot at one point. I once dreamt of being a part of Matrix WGI, Rob Fergusons love child (he's wearing a matrix shirt if you wanna check that for yourself). Went to the audition, tried for quads. They might have even given me a spot in open class too! At the first day they ranked me as 7th of 12 auditionees. I did not go back to the second audition... Honestly though, Rob's percussion knowledge and experience is blatant. His personal understanding of the drum and his experience mastering his philosophy show in everything that he does. I didn't really care much for the "To be badass is the ultimate goal" vibe. He preached many goals, somethin about music or whatever, but really the goal was to BE THE LITERAL COOLEST GROUP. Only to be achieved through musical excellence or whatever but badassery was really the goal. It was my only chance to be in a professional corps thanks to my bonus year. I decided it was not for me.

If only black hbcu drumlines would sound like this clean and simple
@oceanic71464 жыл бұрын
I marched three seasons with a world class drum corps. At the end of the day, the general public will prefer HBCUs to a DCI battery the majority of the time. Clean doesn't always mean entertaining.
@lameimpala84264 жыл бұрын
oceanic714 If people actually understand the hard work and concentration put into playing clean, it would be more entertaining tenfold.... buuut sadly the general population doesn't know anything about drum chops hahah
@austinsmith51014 жыл бұрын
jules I think that showmanship is a huge part of it. People can recognize the talent of a DCI line while still finding the movement and overall simple and catchy music of a HBCU kind to be so entertaining and impressive
@Salamitommy-d5m4 жыл бұрын
@@austinsmith5101 entertaining maybe but you can teach a group of middle schoolers those routines
@captainkiwi774 жыл бұрын
marklower007 you can teach a group of middle schoolers to do shitty drum corps stuff to, doesn’t say anything about the style, more about the players you are teaching, for every crown you’ve got a NCA&T, for every Fayetteville state you’ve got a Carolina Gold. It just depends on the group you are watching and the dedication and passion of the people in said group. Drum corps aren’t inherently cleaner or better drumlines. I say all this as a corps style kid who went to NCCU an HBCU, those cats were clean as fuck and entertaining while at it, every kid there put in the same work, the same effort, the same concentration as any corps style kid performing at a high level.
