I'm a 50 year old dude. I marched from 87-92. Been around the activity in some capacity pretty much my whole life. I've been there, done that and got the T-Shirt. The 2019 Phantom Regiment is the only corps that has ever made me cry. Specifically the semifinals show. These kids got fed a soup sandwich design wise and made finals in spite of the product they were given. They made finals because they were the god damned Phantom Regiment and Phantom doesn't end their season on Friday night and that wasn't happening this year... NOT to these kids. These kids absolutely deserved to be in Finals. They absolutely brought it... but that show had a REALLY bad brass book. That brass line was not at all bad, but that book did them no favors. It lacked impact points where faces should have been peeled off... I mean come on.. the opener and the first hit of Carmina Burana being played by freaking PHANTOM REGIMENT should not have been the damp squib that it ended up being. When they were finally let loose in the closer and taht wall of sound came from the brass... when they were actually allowed to overbalance the synths), well THAT was the Regiment we all expected. I think the concept of I Am Joan is absolutely wonderful (and a show celebrating women was LONG overdue in DCI), but the actual nuts and bolts of the product was just bad. Will Pitts got fired and rightfully so. These kids deserved a better product. They clearly wanted to be in finals and did so in spite of that show. Here's hoping that Phantom is back in the top half of finals when we come back (hopefully) in 2022 and that it is a long damned time before they ever flirt with 13th again!

Man… I marched that show. Your comment is spot-on and the closest I’ve seen anyone who wasn’t directly involved with Regiment in ‘19 sum up the season’s struggles. I ended up spending most of that season stressed and frustrated, staring down the possibility of ending my season on a Friday night was NOT fun. Man, thank you. It really really touches my heart when someone says that they liked Regiment 2019. I spent a lot of that season wondering if what I was doing was like by the crowd, if I was able to leave a mark like every other Phantom Regiment prior. It’s comments like this that I stumble upon years later that confirm that even though 2019 was a shitshow in a lot of ways, it was entirely worth it and something I’ll still cherish forever.

Looking back at this after 22 and 23 played out, and there’s no question Phantom has indeed come back in a tremendous way. While some of the musical choices are representative of a newer chapter in the corps that made many of us love the activity, there’s no question they are still THAT corps. THAT corps that brings out the emotion in the audience night after night, and has drawn fan-favorite accolades the past three years. These performers want it, no question about it, and it’s good the teachers have come back into place to set them up for exactly that.

I marched this show, and as Jack said above you are literally spot on. I remember especially the last 2 weeks right after Atlanta where us in the contra section were all talking about how if we were gonna make finals we had to beat out either Spirit of Atlanta or the Crossmen. That summer was full of stress and frustration. Especially for us contras, there were times where we wanted to let loose with our sound but the staff didn't want us to do that until the closer. I am glad to see these comments though because it shows there were people who knew and understood our wants and frustrations that season

Video doesn't do this show justice. I was lucky enough to be able to go this year, my first time going to finals. I got chills. After seeing their final run, I knew immediately that they're the corps I want to be in. The other shows were amazing too, but there's always been something about Phantom that I like more than the other corps.

If the video doesn’t do it justice, then the energy at finals night must’ve been immense. I’m filled with chills right now just from this video. No other video posted by DCI this week has had the same effect on me.

This closer was nasty good. Not a fan of all the singing, but as soon as they come back in playing. Nasty loud. Go check out their closers from 2010 and 2012 that are even better than this.

@@michaelsimpson6327 to be fair, their extensive process on getting the correct groups featured at the right times is REALLY difficult, considering how rapidly it changes. We got a glimpse of the kind of setup they have to put together their full multi cam setup for videos like these, and the actual full blueray recordings, and it is honestly pretty nuts. They kind of had no choice but to include that section of the video in because the tenors were the feature group at the point in the show, so highlighting anything else would just be wrong from a focus perspective, even though hiding them would hide a small, and in my opinion very insignificant, error. We're not even talking about someone dropping an instrument, stepping off at the wrong time, marching incorrect drill, or anything that would be a real error that would be glaringly noticeable, but a small cosmetic one
