I never use the dealer unless it's under warranty. I have a local mechanic who is 10 times better, 10 times cheaper, and drives a 5th gen ram as well so he knows it and loves the trucks. Maintaining a good relationship with a good mechanic is the way to go for me, I don't even have your skills so anything beyond changing fluids is basically done by him. Even cheaper warranty fixes I've brought to him. Just not worth the crap you get at FCA dealers (generally).

I purchased a used 2019 Ram 1500 about a month ago. within 2 weeks the waterpump completely blew out. poured coolant all over my garage. I called the dealer i got it from and they activly avoided my calls. to this day they will not call me back or answer my calls. only voicemail. I guess thats what i get for not buying into the extended warrenty. Also my Temp license plate is expiring on 10/31 and i have not gotten it in the mail. i have a feeling i will be dealing with that soon.

I just changed out the passenger side CV and the intermediate shaft. I took the teuck to the dealer. They told me the intermediate shaft is not replaceable and not available. They quoted me $4k to replace the entire frint differential and new CV's. I found the intermediate shaft in a kit on eBay. I bought a new CV axle with a life warranty and replaced both parts. Took about 3hrs. Cost me $300 compared to $4k. Best part is the intermediate shaft kit came with a rubber boot that goes on rhe end of the CV to protect the splines of the CV and intermediate to Hopefully keep them from wearing out.

I’m really surprised that they don’t make speedi-boots anymore. It was a split CV boot replacement that let you cut off the old boot, then clamp the split boot over it and use a set of locking pins to hold it together. In many cases they outlasted OEM CV boots and a semi competent shade tree mechanic could have it on in an hour or less. Had one on the inner cv joint of a Subaru for over a decade

@@MrJustinWheeler I agree. I’ve taken it upon myself to perform routine maintenance and only take it to the dealer for warranty work. The trucks pretty simple to maintain, Knock on wood. I’m happier with the truck doing my own work for less than half the cost of a dealer. However if I need a major repair I’ll go to another shop whose mechanics are more competent.

I’ve had mixed experience with ford as well. Had to take it up the food chain so to speak to get warranty work done in a favorable time. GM dealership I used to go to was always on point tho. Greeted with “Hello Mr. Such and Such” and a cup of coffee. Always pleasant. The GM dealership was a much smaller dealership than the Ford dealership that I go to now. Went in for an oil change on my HD and they fixed a paint chip on my antenna and hood. But - by switching to ford I know the body of my truck won’t rust after a few years. I think the size of the dealership has much to do with the service. If a big dealership loses one customer : not a big deal. If a small dealership loses a customer : it is a big deal.

They sure did buger that diff housing up. I've replaced cv shafts with far more corrosion than that. Seems a little strange to me. The fact that the end lonk is not tight is a real indicator of the level of "technicians" they have there. I'd watch that seal after this. When you do get thetime to swap it out, it might be a good idea to replace that seal at the same time. I'd love to know what they were looking to cut up. Seems to me they wanted to take more money out of your pocket with that full diff swap they quoted you.

@MrJustinWheeler I have a lot of distrust with mechanics and dealers having worked on cars since I was young. Not saying I'm a world class mechanic but seeing what shops say is wrong and the thousands that are quoted, just to have folks have me look it over as a second opinion, to find that a huge chunk of issues aren't actually issues really puts a sore spot there.

I agree. Dealers of ALL brands have really gone to crap with having knowledgeable techs. The amount of money they're paying senior techs hasn't changed, but the complexity of vehicles has gone through the roof. Paying pennies for an oil change on a vehicle that requires multiple pieces of shielding and other components to be removed is a recipe for discontent with techs. Thats why so many great mechanics have gone independent and the dealer experience suffer as a consequence. My wife and I make sure to treat our mechanic like family because they're so hard to find at a high level.

those axles can be really hard, I have done more than 10, best thing is to get the knuckle out of the way, then get a helper to hold the axle straight, then hit it really hard, have the helper rotate it 90 degrees and hit it again and repeat until it pops out or you give up lol, but all is not lost, get a small grinder and cut the old axle (no loss there), get it out of the way, then grind a slot in the sleeve that in left and crack it with a chisel, then install the new axle, dealer mechanics do not deal with rusty frozen parts like I do, I have a shop in Ohio, that would have been just another job

They are notorious for rusting together but admittedly I got a bit lost when you said the boot is not replaceable... I have change inner and outer boots without issues multiple times. Yes, I would prefer to replace the entire axle as the customer gets warranty on the entire axle if any part fails and it would (normally) be quicker to do so.

They may have meant that the axle isn't repairable after they heat it up with a torch and beat the crap out of it. I had one that the customer tried to get out himself. I was beating on it with a sledgehammer about 5 days after a hernia surgery. Good times.

I know a lot of people have problems with their dealerships but I’m very fortunate Krebs dealership near me has never once let me down. They’ve been great to me with my 99, 05, and now my 2020 and my wife’s 2020 Grand Cherokee. There are a few things that I can work on but when it comes to something like the CV needing replaced, I’d take it to them. Will definitely be looking for how things go from here in your situation. Keeping my fingers crossed that it’ll be able to get fixed. I hope this doesn’t deter you from getting another Ram at some point though pending what Stellantis does on the new designs for the Ram. Rumor has it the 5.7L HEMI is going the way of the Dodo bird, which I believe would be a bad move on their part. Take care my friend, til next time.

I have been in that same situation with a rusted on CV axle. You can make cuts on the CV axle around the splines. You just have to be careful. The other option is to pull the actuator and replace the stub shaft on that side. I think it would only add $100-150 extra and a little bit of labor.

I had a similar problem with my VW Fox, back in the early 90's, except that it was an OEM CV boot that kept tearing. The third time i ended up ordering an aftermarket part that was cheaper; and it outlasted the rest of the car (between my dad and I, we put over 1 million kilometers on it). My more recent experiences with Rock Auto have been pretty good. They always let you know if it's OEM, or a cheap aftermarket part. So, i can't fault them on that. It sounds to me like a defect on the original boot; and the cheaper replacement part simply wasn't up to the standards required. Too bad it wasn't covered under warranty. I'd probably just bite the bullet and get it done with the new OEM shaft. At least they'll give you 'some' warranty on it; and if you can silver-tongue the dealer, you might be able to fenagle a longer warranty... considering all the troubles you've gone through with the first two boots tearing.

I brought the correct Dana parts to rebuild the rear diff for my vehicle to dealership, they called me saying I gave them wrong ring gear and hardware because the bolts kept snapping when they tried to torque them to 95lb/ft , I explained as calmly as I could that if you look in your book it clearly states 55 lb/ft . Just don't get how you can make that kind of mistake when your an ASE Branded-Mechanic working on the very brand of vehicle you were trained on! That dealership should compensate you for your time , or at least comp the bill. I suppose they charged you for their non-repair as well? Liking the videos , keep up the good work.👍

I know this issue. They mix up materials and they did chemical reaction ovet the time and mechanic is struggeling to get that out. I've had in my workshop nearly the same issue. We had to remove the rear shocks for a small repair, but 2 years before someone lowered the car without using new screws. Especially on suspension with mixed material use new screws. They have a absorbtion layer on, when remove the screws it destroys this layer. When you use the old in a few year disembly is a pain in the ass. What you can do now try with a drill to get hole in and than take a saw to split the outer ring. Than it has a bit more play to get it out. Good luck.

Check and see if they are still manufactured. I have had boots changed changed in the past but nothing was rusted together. Your truck must be out of warrenty and only so much can be done at a dealer. They warrenty their work. Older vechiles can become a pain even when engine and tranny work well. @MrJustinWheeler a lot of the time it's just the c-clip that is severely hung up. A lot of hammering and usually a 4ft pry bar and an air hammer with a 2nd person will get them off. Hardest task is to not damage the stub shaft, because that is not serviced separate, unless there is something aftermarket now. If the splines on the diff output are worn down or damaged, unfortunately only proper repair is the front diff. This was a much bigger problem on 4th gen rams. Haven't seen too many yet on the 5th gens like yours. Try pushing it towards the diff then really big hammer to get the clip to dislodge.

Clean the CV boot at the break, than super glue it, then try some Guerrilla Tape in half inch strips to re-enforce the boot repair. Pack it with grease before you glue the repair. Temp Hack Repair. Or cut the Tape in a butterfly design to fold over the repaired boot.

Had this happen to my truck from a rusty internal c clip, I ended up having to cut the CV axle inline with the splines to allow me to pry it apart from the male intermediate output shaft where it meets the diff. I replaced it without putting a new C clip on.

Sadly this why I still work on all my vehicles at 67 years old. Dealers rarely fixed the problem. Now the costs are truly crazy. THE NEW PROBLEM IS THEY DONT WANT TO WORK ON ANYTHING MORE THAN 10 YEARS OLD.....AT ANY COST.

I have not had good luck with dealers for years. Toyota or chrysler.. The Jeep dealer kept my Gladiator for a week for an emergency brake problem, then all of the sudden said there was no problem. They gave me a rental because I showed them it was sticking. The toyota dealer left a bunch of crap loose on the engine when they worked on my FJ for warrenty work. I would not let any of them touch my truck or cars now.

Did you compare the specs of that $70 part to $500 part. Some times cheap ain't cheap. I've dealt with cv joints on all of my Hondas since we started driving them in 1989. I have never had a cv failure. Would you like to know why? I thought so. I always took my Hondas to my trusted Honda mechanics at 4-Star Import Automotive in Tulsa, Oklahoma for religiously performed oil changes. I trusted them because they earned it and for no other reason. When they changed the oil they looked the car over very good. When they told me it needed something I said GETCHASUM. Now, we've replaced some CV boots but never a joint. I can't believe that cv boots are not available. Perhaps a substitute would work. The only reason cv joint fail is because boots fail and leak out all of the grease.

Did they apply lubricant and let it sit overnight before trying to take it off? It doesn’t look like it a lot of these new techs not all of them don’t have that old school knowledge where something like this wouldn’t be a big deal!

My buddy in Denver (a mechanic) had a Japanese older man rebuild CV joints and he had a lot of business. He was honest and affordable. CV's rarely go bad if you care for the boots. The dealer was being liars and drama queens I think. They often just park your car and pretend that they were working on it. Hogwash!

Doesn’t somebody make a repair boot that is split longitudinaly. After it’s put in place the split is held together with screws. Think I’ve seen them for VW’s.

dont assume the dealer is going to use oem parts. I worked at a ford dealer and people would pay $500 for brakes and they would send me down to car quest to get the cheapest pads and rotors they had. Make sure the parts they will use are OEM before they do the work.
