Thank you very much for posting this video. I actually just had the same exact issue on my 2022 Ram just yesterday! After two hours of troubleshooting I went to the auto parts store and bought a starter and started removing the old starter and when I got to the 13mm nut located on the starter solenoid that’s located on the starter, it was extremely loose. I was able to remove the nut by hand with no tools needed. At that point, I tightened everything back up, connected the battery terminals, and the truck started right away. I was able to return the new starter to the auto parts store. Have not had any issues all day today. I don’t know why this isn’t a recall as the 13mm nut WAS the issue! Thanks again, man!

Had this on my 19 Laramie. What fixed it for me was cleaning the corrosion off of the starter wire and tightening the 13mm bolt at the front of the starter. I bought a new battery just to be safe as well. My check engine cleared itself and has been consistently starting weeks later.
@motormossvlogs1450 Жыл бұрын
Hey little tip! It wasnt probably the actual starter…that little wire with the clip that goes to starter was probably corroded. Its dumb how Chrysler does it. But that wire reads the volts and tells the pcm if it has the volts to start. When you replaced the starter, you just agitated it. You should try to run a “pigtail” from that wire straight to the battery and see if it works.

Fixed!!! You gave me the right path. 2021 no start, could jump. What I found then battery. I replaced battery and no issue for about a month or so. Then it started again, guess new wore off the battery and extra umph was gone. Well after video and comments I removed the starter, same thing power cable was hand tight. Had it tested at autozone and starter good. Put bsck on with some dielectric grease on all connections and tightened with 1/4" rachet and mid length socket. Was terrible to get to and get starter out. Had about 10 successful starts since. So thank you for video and from the comments. From the factory under torqued. 1st exact issue i found documented.

Great video and informative! Two thoughts I have. - 1. Get rid of 12 point sockets and replace them with 6 point! Those 12 point sockets have rounded a lot of tight bolt heads. And - 2. I still wonder if it was your starter OR that loose bolt that connected the cable! Either way, it’s new now and great job fixing it!! Keep those wheels rollin! I’m watching for the next vid! Thanks!
@MrJustinWheeler Жыл бұрын
I’ve got a mix of 6 and 12 point. But I try to keep 3 sets of the “essential” tools. At the house, at the land, and in the truck. So it is usually a crap shoot what I’m going to have for a repair. Haha. And it’s possible that it was just a loose wire… but at that point I wasn’t willing to take the risk and potentially end up stranded somewhere. I feel good about it being new. Thanks for the comment as always!

The nut to the starter is a bolt on the starter. No reason to remove. Just remove the heat shield cover. Reach around to the start of the starter. You should feel the nut move freely. Tighten it down and the issue will go away. Had it happen on my 2019 and this fixed the issue.

1) fix that boot before the next rain storm. Our last rental car had a bad boot and within 10 miles of wet road we had a failed wheel bearing. 2) our 1999 Ram would have battery ground terminal issues every 5-7 years that gave the same symptoms you describe. Sandpaper on the terminal and cable end helped for a while, new cable end fixed it for a few years, but it was a recurring problem that always could be fixed by reseating the battery connection.

This happened to my 2019 Ram a week ago. I too thought it was the battery since it's coming up on two years of age. After it happened the second time, It had me thinking, maybe it's the alternator. What I wound up doing both times is actually pushing the start button with the Key Fob instead of my finger. Lo and behold, it started right up! I don't know why it worked but, it does. And, after doing a little research on KZbin I found out that's what some other Ram owners did as well. I'm not going to discount replacing the alternator. But, I'm hoping I won't need to.

First thing I noticed was the wear on the cheap undercarriage shielding by the starter... you do a lot of off roading, between the dirt and stuff hitting your undercarriage. I bet your connection to the starter was either loose or dirty; which explains the starter working on and off. It doesn't take much resistance on a 12v circuit to cause issues!

Had the SAME problem: intermittently would just click and not start. I tightened the nuts on the starter solenoid and then reconnected the battery at the terminal. Started stronger than it had in years. I believe the nits on the solenoid were probably only finger tight from the factory. Also, I the dealer service center could NOT diagnose the problem. Stupid, imo. They had the truck for 3 nights supposedly testing everything. Took me a while reading and then 30 seconds under the truck to tighten. Didn’t even need to remove the heat shield. 2017 Ram 1500, 77k miles.

Had this problem on my 2019 Ram 1500 4WD 5.7 Hemi. After messing with it for months (didn't want the dealer to mess with it), I noticed that my high brake light wasn't working. Dealership said it can’t find the problem they hooked it up to their computer’s it’s just the first initial cold start really struggles starting I’ll usually kill it if it struggles. Then the 2nd attempt it will fire right up very weird can stop & start after that all day no problems. Today it did it again I gave it gas and the RPM jumped to 2k steadily it stayed there so I killed it and the 2nd start this morning fired right up

You could be partially right. I have had in the past, at least 3 times with different vehicles where the terminal ends from battery to starter (or anywhere in between where there is a connection) where the terminals develop a thin layer of corrosion (not visible to the naked eye). Before buying a new starter, make sure to undue all connectors, clean them with emery cloth (or a wire brush, sand paper) and reconnect. You will find that a lot of times that this is the problem. So you may ask, why did the problem go away with the new starter? Well, because you may just have disconnected the terminal that had the corrosion and just by doing this, took care of the main problem. Like I said before, the corrosion layer is so thin you would never know it's there. In my line of work, half the time I find the problems to be corrosion (due to moisture) and or loose connections.

Mr. Wheeler, thank you for the info. Something to be aware of if my truck starts acting up. Got home, looked under the truck to find the flange open a bit because of no bolt head. The boot issue sucks but they tend to wear out over time. I had the same problem with my 2023 dodge ram sport 21,000kms. The brake pedal was hard. *** the solution to start the truck is a security issue. You have to switch the push button back to off(the far left orange light comes on). You have to open the door and close it to give the impression to the truck that it’s disconnected. Step2 you have to press the push button five times(that is important). Step3 you have to push really hard on the brake and at the same time press and hold the push start button for 15 seconds. Step 4 you push on the push button start to start the truck. That will start it. *** you might have to press it again one more time if it doesn’t start but it will start. How I found this out was a video I watched that had the same problem on a dodge journey apparently it’s a common problem. F**k Dodge, I’m buying a Toyota. I’m writing this as I was stuck in Edmonton Alberta from Toronto on business trip -21 outside.

Wow surprised to see the CV boot like that, any signs or symptoms besides the visual grease? If you remember I had issues with mine around 50k miles (low speed when turning would hear clicking/popping/clunking noises), I ended up replacing mine with a Heavy Duty Shaft with a thermoplastic outboard boot from Cardone, no issues so far at 60k and sounds are gone. What did you use to replace yours and do you think its wear and tear/bad boot, or did it tear on something like a rock etc?
@BenJaminLongTime Жыл бұрын
keep us posted on this please :) I have the same issue and apparently so do a handful of people online. it is a weird issue, the intermittent-ness of it makes it a challenge to track down and these new trucks have so much electronics going on it can be pretty hard to trace stuff. I can confirm its not the battery, its not corrosion on terminals. Things it could still be: Component drawing power on occasion (but not always) and draining the battery, start solenoid (which I am increasingly thinking it might be after seeing this), bad wires (seems unlikely but possible), bad ground, bad break depression switch maybe, bad parking sensor maybe,... idk. Like I said, vehicles are becoming so complicated it can be a pain to troubleshoot.

Not a mechanic just mess with my vehicle till I get to a major issue. Looking into the Rams now but I have run into similar issues with push button systems in a Toyota. The light on the start button would stay red when you press the brake pedal. So I would give it a couple of presses until it turns green indicating its good to start. I wonder if the brake pressure switch has a double contact or something. To where if it doesn't have good voltage it doesn't allow a start? This literally happened to me a few weeks ago and I am waiting to see if it happens again. 2021 Toyota.

I'll also add my brake lights worked the entire time. Just that stupid indicator stayed red and turned green when it see the brake pedal was pressed.

@@glenmyrick1359 3Months later and I am back in these comments lol, my truck still has this issue but very intermittent as mentioned. I have wondered lately if it is the brake depression sensing like you are saying too, because I have found if I keep trying to turn it on, while also pressing and depressing the brake each time, it often will eventually start up. This to me seems like a brake sensing issue based on this characteristic. Also, Didnt mention in my comment that when it truely wont start, I hook up my jumper pack and it will start no problem. so so odd. so increasing current fixes the issue, new battery does not fix the issue, repeatedly trying to start fixes the issue sometimes, and the issue only happens extremely randomly and not consistently due to any external weather or anything as far as I have noticed. So... still leaning towards the starter motor solenoid sticking I guess which would make sense for all the issues and fixes, (assuming overdriving current unsticks it). Or some kind of weirdness going on the the brake depression sensing

@@BenJaminLongTime UGH! What a nightmare. Currently my 2020 Ram 1500 Rebel crew cab is sitting in my driveway and won't start. I ruled out the battery being the issue as I even tried a new one. I was going to try a new starter, but not thrilled to see 3 months later you're having the same problem (and you bought the expensive starter, not a cheapo). I'm going to attempt to check my starter with a multimeter this evening...

@jasonmckinney6444 Жыл бұрын
I was thinking it must be a loose connection. You moved the battery cable terminals and then the truck started up. The next time you disconnected the battery cable terminals to remove the battery and then reconnected and it started up. Since it was intermittent I strongly believe it was a bad connection. Either at the battery cables or that cable on the starter. But, it’s done now and seems to be good to go.

My 2015 needed a long block at 250k miles. Another 100k miles the accessories like fuel pump started failing. I’m getting it fixed. It’s been an awesome truck. Now I’m looking at a 2nd vehicle for instances if/when my truck fails and found a 2019 Ram with low miles however it appears to be insanely less reliable than my current model.

Great video Justin. Curious to know if there is a way to test that starter without taking it all apart. I hope this fixes your issue.
@MrJustinWheeler Жыл бұрын
Thanks Angel. You can get the starters tested at certain shops, but at that point, I’d feel more comfortable just replacing it with something new (with a warranty).
@tomparker9966 Жыл бұрын
Load testing starters used to be something all auto parts stores did as a free service before they sold you a starter or alternator. At your mileage you were probably going to need a starter soon anyway but I suspect you have a connection issue at one of the many points between the battery and the starter.

My 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7 acted up yesterday and almost left me stranded 30 miles away from home. It would click but not turn over. After sitting in my truck researching different methods to get it started, I thought about the fuse block. I checked under the hood and found the starter fuse, labeled F40. The fuse visually looked fine, but I had no tools or multimeter to test it. Thank the heavens the fuse block under the hood had a spare F40 sitting in one of the spare slots. Swapped it out and fired right up. I’m skeptical about it being just the fuse though and I’m going to have to look at the actual starter when I get decent weather around Maryland. Too freaking cold out to be under a truck for hours trying to take two bolts off like most people here are saying lol. My truck had previous electrical issues a year before with the rack and pinion system failing which caused power steering loss while driving and the entire instrument panel to go haywire and shut down the truck. No lie, it spent 50 days in the dealership where they ended up finally replacing the rack and pinion system and it was working great until yesterday. This truck is becoming more of a liability the longer I hang on to it. If it wasn’t so pretty, I’d trade it in for a freaking Prius at this point.

Watched your video and I think this might be the issue I just experienced this morning with my 2019 Ram with 205k miles. Well first off on Monday (21 July) my check engine light turned on and my remote start hasn't worked since then. I ordered a code reader but it will not arrive until tomorrow. So this morning, I went out to start my truck pressed button and it tired to turn over and nothing, tried it two more times and nothing. My first thought was the battery, I went and checked the cables, cleaned the build up on the ground and reattached it so I could try and start it again. I tried to start it and I heard a pop through the speakers and no start and almost nothing is turning on when I push the start button. It is basically dead and unresponsive, I have to cycle through the push to start let it sit for a second and try it again. Same thing two more times, I hear a pop in through the speakers and I have no gauges and the engine does nothing. Has happened to you before, is there another reason the only thing on my dash that shows is no key fob detected? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Mine is a 2020 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi. Thought I needed a starter after ruling out everything else. Guy told me to put a new battery in my key fob. I’ve done that and it’s started every time for 2 weeks now. Waiting for the next no start but keeping my fingers crossed.

I have this problem and it is pretty frustrating. I have been living with it for months now and was fairly sure it was not the battery due to it being an intermittent problem. Also, even with a jump pack hooked on it still will occasionally fail to even try to turn over. further making me think corrosion (despite loooking clean) or some other weird issue. so I got a new battery, cleaned the connections and bam still nothing, so I have yet to finish this video but I know its some bs issue lol.

Thanks amigo. Christmas night leaving my folks house the my '21 with 57k clicked and didn't start. It took about 5 minutes of hitting start, throwing a jump pack on, taking the jump pack off, scratching my head before it randomly just fired up. Swapped the starter out last night and boom, fired right up. I did notice this truck has cranked slower than my 2019 since I bought it but didn't think much of it. Guess the starter was going for about 7k now of my ownership. For those doing this swap, drop the front of the front drive shaft and loosen the two bolts holding the black support plate around the lower starter bolt. This will save you an hour of screwing with it and wondering if you are even a mechanic.

2011 Ram 1500 130,000 miles Crank No Start. Battery was bad so I replaced that, then starter went bad replaced that, alternator was next so I changed that. The crank no start was a little $9 buck relay that is on the circuit board inside of the TPIM. Until I soldered the old one out and the relay I got on Amazon I used a jumper. Pain in the but because the jumper where I had it was supposed to act like a relay however when I didn’t pull one side of the jumper my fuel pump kept running thus killing my battery also. Once I took the TPIM apart and put the new relay in truck runs normally again. There is a great video on how to do this on KZbin 😊

This happened to my 2020 when it had only 45k miles on it. I had no warning signs, just went out to the truck one morning and nothing. I will say that it was only 7 degrees out that morning. Anyway, I tried a new battery and that didn't help. Luckily for me it was covered under warranty.

Hate to see it happen to you too. Have almost the exact same story have an 2020 1500, 50k miles. Started what seemingly was a bad battery noticed some corrosion on the terminals. Cleaned it and it worked for another 3 weeks or so. One morning just a click no crank. Replaced the starter and apparently the extra drain causes the battery to have extra stress and that died a week after the starter. Wonder how wide spread the starter issue is, these engines have been around a whole wonder what changed.
