I was checking out the updated spreadsheet and noticed in the month stats page under the format table for 'Audio' the formal only includes Audio and the Books Read sheet uses 'Audiobook' and does not count unless updated. It is an easy fix but not sure if everyone will know. I love your spreadsheets!!

How do add choices to spreadsheet options? Such as source of books like overdrive, hoopla etc. Also culture?

I think I have it listed on the instructions page in the new spreadsheet. In Sheets, it's right click, data valedation, and then I don't remember the wording lol but it's one of those choices

That was fun to watch. Hope you get better soon. Chicken soup (or alternate yummy cold recovery recipe, Gypsy Soup from the Moosewood Cookbook - easy to find the recipe online), fire cider toddies, elderberry syrup, lots of rest. Sorry, just being a bit mom-ish. Oh, and I though about your pie chart with graphic novels taking up such a large percentage - I thought, but that was for number of books. I bet graphic novels would be a considerable smaller wedge if you measured by pages read.
@hardbackhoarder5 жыл бұрын
good idea, might do a separate chart for that this year!

Much has been debated about this, but here I go, and I'm just "talking out loud", not trying to talk to anybody in particular: listening to an audiobook (or whatever, for that matter) is NOT "reading" a book. Reading and listening are two very different actions which don't require the same amount of will, attention, imagination or effort on the part of an individual. It's not better or worse, necessarily, but the experience you get out of it may differ tremendously.
@hardbackhoarder5 жыл бұрын
I mean, I think you're totally wrong, but sure lol I found, as someone who does both, it requires the same amount of everything you listed. I just get to do other things while I listen. Also, this thought process is ableist and is harmful to those who only have audiobooks as an option. You take in the words in the same manner and understand them the same and still have to imagine those words to life. You can "skim" physical words the same as audio, you have to use just as much attention and will to focus on the words. And sure, the experience can be different, but I find audios far better when it does.
@c.32595 жыл бұрын
@@hardbackhoarder Ableist? WOW, so far from my thought process. It’s not a matter of what’s better, as they are two different ways of communication, and each of them can be better adapted to a specific situation. I’m not attacking anyone here. My thought process is just that listening is not reading, as eating is not drinking. Reading implies comprehending the meaning of a written source. That’s what I’m saying. Reading can never be listening. I understand what you say about your experience. Mine is that, while a physical book requires that you take an active role for the narrative to advance, the story of the audiobook advances regardless of anyone's participation, or me paying full attention to the details. Besides, audiobooks, as wonderful as they can be, sometimes limit the job my brain needs to do to create a personality for the characters. I don’t need to imagine a voice or a character’s ways, as they are already there for me (again, this may be great! Depends on the situation and your circumstance, I guess). Intonation, rhythm, intentionality (is that a word?) of the story you are listening to are those of the reader, not the ones of the listener, or above all the ones of the writer. I can be wrong, as I said, I’m just thinking out loud and this is just my experience. I find writing about it (in English, to make my life harder) is a great way to put my own thoughts in order. :)
@hardbackhoarder5 жыл бұрын
@@c.3259 C. Ok I see now. I think by saying audiobooks aren't reading sounds ableist, and that's what I assumed you were referring to. Like it "doesn't count." I see now you mean the literal definition of reading, though there's really only the idea of marking a book read, hence why I would say, sure you aren't physically reading it, but in bookish terms, the book has been "read." I know many people who can't listen to audiobooks, so each circumstance is different and sorry i misinterpreted your original thoughts.
