I went to the RE dealer yesterday to look at these. Absolutely stunning. I had a new gen T120 Black and it was not as well finished as this. Seriously. Its beautiful. The alloy is not laquered so its a bike that WILL need careful TLC to keep it looking nice. (See Thruxton corrosion issues). I am a phonecall away from ordering one, its that good. Nice size and proportions too. Its about the same size as a Z650 for reference.

I'm a big admirer of Royal Enfield. They get an unwarranted hard time in my opinion. The indian made enfields of the past are great bikes, they just need looking after, much like all bikes of the period they are based on. They are cheap, look great, sound great and have bags of character. I agree though that this machine is a game changer for the brand.

I had an Indian Enfield 350cc Bullet back in the early 1980s. It turned out to be the most useless heap of scrap I have ever had. My letter on the subject was printed in Motorcycle Sport and detailed the problems like a burnt out wiring harness, a front wheel hub with the grease applied AFTER the grease seal was placed against the bearing and discovering the spares did not fit, amongst many other problems! They apparently assembled bikes from parts that fitted and sent the bits that didn't out as spares! I hope they are better but have no intention of finding out myself. Once bitten, twice shy

RE has cheaped out on accessories and has focused more on the quality of riding necessities, whether it be the Bosch Dual Channel ABS or the Pirelli Phantoms on the road..... I like minimal, nothing fancy, less to go wrong. Simple engine, easy to maintain at home. A hansom machine, I 'd say, style wise, based on a range of popular British bikes from the 60's. Norton Commando 750 up swept exhaust, from right side that engine hints at the egg shaped BSA A65 and that tank is very 1968 T120 Triumph too. Even has centre stand and a front mud guard that is long enough to stop road crap. Power wise a real world bike, at a real world price and I want one.

Great review, and isn’t it good to have an alternative choice to the over complex high cost options most other manufacturers offer. if you look on the RE web page of the engine design, it’s built with simple screw and lock nut valve adjustments to make servicing easier not a feature you usually see on new engine designs. This makes home maintenance simple with basic tools or for better value dealer servicing due to reduced labour times needed. Well done RE designers.

Nice review. It’s a beautiful bike. I guess those of us who are a certain age get the nostalgia aspect as this style of bike was still commonplace in the 70’s when I was a kid. It has plenty of styling cues from the original Interceptor from the 60’s. I’m a Guzzi fan but if I had to choose between this and the current Guzzi V7 there’s a good chance I’d choose the Enfield and save myself two grand. They deserve to do well with this one. BTW, the tyres are the modern interpretation of the ‘legendary’ ‘Pirelli Phantom’ that was introduced in the late 70’s. They were the ‘go to’ tyre if one had a performance bike back then.

Andy Turner TBH it’s been a while since I rode a middleweight but there’ll be one in my future when I struggle to move the big ones around. I have the Griso1200SE and a BMW R1200S so I’m with you on air cooling and shaft drive. It’s bliss. (The nightmare I had with my Beemers final drive a few years back is another story mind..) Something like this Enfield isn’t going to eat chains and sprockets though and fitting a scottoiler is easy enough. Don’t forget to change your FD oil regularly. My Guzzi is only at 4.5k miles but I do the beemer every two years or 8k.

Hiya TMF, thanks for the video. The bars and gauges on this bike are simply beautiful. IMO this would be a real touring bike, where one could actually get in some of the scenery and stop to take a photo or two and have a coffee etc, and all that with absolutely zero stress because one wouldn't feel the need to yank the throttle or hit the corners at speed like one does on so many other bikes.

With the positive reviews this bike is receiving & the price, Triumph & Kawasaki must be hoping it suffers some catastrophic engine failure that will put off customers from buying this rather than a street twin or w800. You mentioned the frame welding, I believe Harris in the UK designed the frame and makes it. I'm well up for one of these but word on the grape vine is that there is going to be a performance version. Possible a 750 with higher compression, cam and exhaust, the bottom end is obviously designed with more power in mind. That, with say 60-70 BHP and street scrambler style would put one in my garage! Either way, they have a winner and it deserves to sell in droves!

The 650 CC is a very clever marketing ploy by RE, in Australia it keeps them under a 660 cc cut off that locks out younger riders, I think it's the same in Europe with their A1 and A2 licenses as well. Plus in Australia being under 660 makes the annual road charges (rego) much cheaper.

Very nice machine. And it is very informative to gauge the "relative" value, to see the price tag of 2 motorcycles you care about buying in your country and abroad! Here in Greece, initial price of the bike is just over 7.200€ while Moto Guzzi V7iii goes for just under 8.500€ with its normal price being right under 9.000€. That's less than 1.800€ while the difference of the 2 bikes in UK is over 2.300 pounds! Most likely that is explained to the expectancy of high sales of a traditional British brand, even though its "Made in India" for decades! Was seriously considering this bike for ages, but few months ago i did my purchase and i am very glad with it! This one still looks awesome though! Thank you for the review sir!

Another lovely review, thank you! P.S. With sort of "everyday" bikes you could maybe ad some "everyday usage infos", like how easy/hard would be to put some baggage on it (i.e. for travels), or what is the revs in 6th gear at 60 mph or motorway speed and avg consumption (for daily commuters), or how it is for the pillion etc.. Cheers, Jacob

A really nice bike, best of the retros, and excellent value for money. The niggle for me would be tank capacity, I guess it's capable of 65-70 mpg but 15 litres would give it the 250+ mile range for serious touring. I expect it'll grow to 750cc before long.

I currently ride a Classic 350 Redditch Edition which I have tinkered with carb jets, air intakes and exhausts. It's a total blast riding through the hills near where I am wringing it's neck. It tops out just over 70 mph, around 120 kmh and some of the steeper long hills mean I'm dropping a gear but it handles nice and is super cheap to run and is fun. I will be looking at the 650 as a step up to a highway capable long distance bike.

Enfield have done a really good job of making the new Interceptor resemble the old. The mention of Pirelli Phantoms reminds me of when we used to spend time debating Pirelli Phantoms, Dunlop TT100s (K81 or later K181) or Avon Roadrunners as our group of teenagers fitted Dunstall reverse cone megaphone silencers to our bikes. The Royal Enfield Interceptor marks the return of one of Royal Enfield's most loved classic motorcycles. Hailing from a time when all that mattered was that the Lincolnshire sun was out and the surf was up, the new Interceptor retains every bit of charm that made it a legend. Loadsa go from its air & oiled cooled 648cc 8 valve parallel twin. She sounds really nice. Seems more powerful than the 47 BHP she’s got. Well done Harris Engineering too. Rajender Thakur “those” Honda and Suzuki? I’m talking about the Honda’s and Suzuki’s I’ve owned and ridden every day in all weathers. They hold up fantastically and are cheap to run. I’ve seen the state of Royal Enfield’s that are used in the same way and they look knackered after a year. Maybe this one’s different but I doubt it. If you’re really set on a modern classic then yeah, neither Honda nor Suzuki make one like this... yet. If I was in the market for a modern classic for commuting my money would still go on a used W800 or Bonneville.

A touch of the Norton Commando look? I love your reviews ,Mr Missenden . What Michel Clasquin- Johnson said stirred several folk to comment on Triumph and how they are moving with their product line. Having only just taken delivery of a 2011 T100 it is difficult to comment, but if the Enfield goes as well as my 71 Bonnie (presumably without the vibes) and holds up well mechanically and cosmetically then it may well have a true winner - to think of all those riders of a certain age who might be drawn back to going back in time and complexity, part of biking's attraction for many of us... Going through my late mid-life crisis at the age of 54! I used to ride motor bikes to get around when I was young, stopped when i was 20 because I got company cars as a salesman and ended up never taking my bike test! Now I regret it as back then it was so easy, now there is so much more to do and it cost a lot and my reactions are slower now I older. However, it is on my bucket list to pass my bike test and ride a big bike along some of Route 66 (the nice bits). So where am I, got my CBT in April 2018 and have been riding a Sinnis Hoodlum 125cc for the last year. i have done around 2500 miles and just LOVE riding again! Passed my theory on the 12th April this year and have booked my Mod 1 test for next Monday. My old school mate who does not like riding as much as me has taken and past both mod 1 & 2 behind my back as he was worried he might fail, so he let me know after he passed both - now more pressure on me! Any way going back to you reviews on the GT & Interceptor - LOVED THEM, Great reviews on the bikes and you are a very good presenter for motorbikes and you have a lot of experience with all the reviews that you have done. With these two bikes you have made me very interested, however, because of my tummy I feel the Interceptor might be the better riding position for me! Can these bikes take a 20 stone 6ft guy? or will I be after more power. I feel sorry for my poor Hoodlum, it's only 11.5 bhp and it just manages to pull me around! Love your reviews & KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK YOUR DOING GETTING OLD GITS LIKE ME BACK ON THE SADDLE!
