Each year as summer turns into fall, Atlantic Salmon return from Lake Ontario to various tributaries as they return to the place they were born. The purpose is to spawn. Each female lays between 2000 to 8000 eggs which are then fertilized by a male, and shortly after that each will die, completing their circle of life.
This video was shot along Duffins Creek in Pickering, Ontario within the northern boundaries of the Greenwood Conservation Area. This stretch of the creek is approximately 6 - 8 kms north of the mouth of the creek along Lake Ontario.

Awesome job, I love this time of year. It's still warm but the nights are crisp and the fish start their journey. Thx for posting!

There's easy viewing access at Paulyn Park in Ajax too. There's a bridge right by the parking lot.

Yes, correct. I was there a few days ago and was on that bridge but so far did not see any Salmon heading upstream. I was surprised to not see any just yet.

No those are Chinook salmon, and coho salmon and they are Pacific ocean salmon that were stalked to remove invasive fish species many years ago also Atlantic salmon in the great lakes are very rare to find
@TheNovakReport
@TheNovakReport 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. It makes sense that they are Pacific salmon given that Atlantic salmon return annually while Pacific Salmon return to their birth place to lay eggs or fertilize and then die.

Thanks. I think the prolong warmth has pushed the run back a bit. I was at the same spot I shot this about a week or two ago and there was nothing at all. I would think we should begin to see things soon, so check back to that spot perhaps on the weekend, and feel free to update here if you see them!

I've heard from a couple of fisherman that they are starting to run upstream just recently. The other day I also drove up Church St under the 401 by Annandale and there were several people with their lines in the creek. I may take a look this weekend myself.

I was just there this afternoon at the same spot I filmed this and still nothing. I think the creek downstream may be a bit too shallow right now and they just can't get up. With some rain that should change things so keep an eye on the weather forecast!

@TheSickNeeds 3 жыл бұрын
This rivers water level is insanely based on how much its rained recently. Every river is but this one more so since there are so many little offshoots that feed it in the upper area. I've been to Greenwood a number of times on opening week of trout season in April to find water levels below knee deep and crystal clear so any fish would be easily spooked and hidden until the sun was going down. (wow what a great run-on sentence).

Had a quick question, are you allowed to fish for them?
@TheNovakReport
@TheNovakReport 3 жыл бұрын
With a fishing license that you can easily obtain, yes you are allowed to catch them. I shot this quite a bit upstream, but there are several anglers who try to catch them closer towards the mouth of the creek by the lake.

This was filmed within the northern part of Greenwood Conservation Area. The parking lot is on 5th Concession Road in the valley. You can go up Westney Rd and turn left or go up Brock Rd and turn right at 5th Concession/Whitevale Road. From the parking lot, you can walk north on the trail and there are a number of access paths to the Duffin's just on your right within a couple hundred metres of the lot.

@TheNovakReport
@TheNovakReport 3 жыл бұрын
@@zohairkhan981 I haven't been in a few days but I don't think you'll see much tonight. The creek water level is really low and that's preventing them from running upstream. We are expecting rain this week which should help so long as we get a good dousing. Maybe hold off until next weekend is what I'm thinking.

@@zohairkhan981 I've always liked the Duffins Creek where I filmed this and there are plenty of good viewing points along the creek. I've heard that if you are interested in going for a drive that the Salmon are running now on the Ganaraska river in Port Hope. I believe I heard the Credit River in Mississauga is doing fine now but I can't confirm. As I said, give it a week and hope for a good amount of rain over the next few days. Their instincts are telling them it's time to go...they just need enough depth to get there!

These are all chinook salmon, not atlantics. Chinook do indeed all die after spawning, atlantics do not. So far the atlantic stocking program has had dismal results.
