My reply to you keeps getting removed I've already done math on the subject using my model car, so that needs to be considered. Oh, and this doesn't include the cost of compounded interest on money saved by going the HEV over the BEV or PHEV. Let me put those numbers for you too. I could continue with this, but you now get my point and I'm not even including the cost of the charging unit for the house or plug in interest from financing as well. The interest earned on $9,810 compounded monthly at 4% APY over 15 years is approximately $7,986.39 you could save by not buying the BEV. The interest earned on $4,700 compounded monthly at 4% APY over 15 years is approximately $3,825.89 by not buying the PHEV. The Kia Niro Hybrid (HEV) EX Trim costs $29,790 to buy. The running cost for 200,000 miles is $12,000. Insurance over 15 years costs $18,000. Two oil changes per year cost $1,500 total. The battery replacement is $3,000. The total cost is $64,290. The Kia Niro Electric (BEV) EX Trim costs $39,600 to buy. The running cost for 200,000 miles (75% home charging and 25% quick charging) is $7,650. Insurance over 15 years costs $22,500. The battery replacement is $10,000. No oil change is required. The initial total cost is $79,750. Including $7,986.39 in interest, the adjusted total cost is $87,736.39. The reality is full HEV are still the most affordable and cost-efficient way to go. PHEV and BEV have too much overhead cost that can't be reduced with using electric over gas. Too much overhead? If you own a BEV and have the ability to charge at home overnight, the cost difference between charging up versus filling up at the gas station can be as much as 90% in favor of EVs. Maintenance costs of BEVs are significantly lower as well. It doesn't take long to make up the price premium, and once you do your savings only grow and accumulate.

@@TheNovakReport Let me do a quick comparison for you using all three proving my point. I'll use my car, the Kia Niro HEV as a baseline. The HEV is $7,250 cheaper than the PHEV and $15,460 cheaper than the BEV over 15 years. It will more than likely also have the better resale value as well. EV sales are not shrinking, but they have stagnated because subsidies are drying up and the early adopters already have their battery cars. The rest of us don't want EVs if we need to make journeys longer than 100 miles, use them in winter, or don't have a drive to charge at home. Let the consumer decide without being bullied by Governments.
@TheNovakReport
@TheNovakReport 27 күн бұрын
But what if what you want causes harm to others? Where do societies draw the line between individual freedom and collective protection from individual actions that are done without consideration of their impact to others? And I guess you haven't noticed all of the EVs with ranges at or above 250 miles today? Or perhaps you haven't noticed that the country with the highest EV adoption rate, where currently 90% of all new sales are EVs is frosty Norway - a country that happens to be a major Oil producer interestingly enough. You should look into how technology can advance rapidly and when it does, the prices drop substantially. If you need case studies, look up the history of computers, televisions, cell phones or just about anything related to consumer electronics.

@@TheNovakReport 250 mile range? Only in the Summer sunshine, and even then its no use for journeys away from home. By the way, check out the queues for chargers in Norway at present. The EVs being made in China are largely using electricity from coal power stations, then transported in diesel powered ships; and lets not forget where all that lithium and cobalt comes from ... Lets develop our own green solutions, but at a sensible pace which does not destroy our economy.

@@JimSmith-d9t I driven just about every EV available and I live in Canada. Winter degradation is nowhere what it used to be as technology continues to improve, like I mentioned earlier. Norway is managing it's situation, but it would be fallacy to think that they will ever return to an ICE based personal automotive transportation bias. China still uses coal, but they are also the world's leading user of hydroelectric power, as well as the world's leading country in terms of renewable energy R&D. A lot of the demand they have for power is due to the demand from the west to make cheap products there to ship here. This, BTW creates a false perception about carbon footprint ownership, since we here in North America have essentially externalized a big chunk of our carbon footprint associated with the cheap electronics, textiles and more that they make for us using fossil fuels. Yet we claim we aren't the problem. If you don't want a Chinese EV, but one made here. Lithium and cobalt is available in North America to meet the expanding needs of automakers. The province of Ontario has a unique situation in that all of the minerals needed to build an EV battery are available within it's own jurisdiction. Ontario is also Canada's largest automotive province and has over the past couple of years seen hundreds of Billions of dollars invested in battery production facilities and mining operations. Oh, fun fact...you also might want to know that all minerals within an EV battery can be recycled and used again in a new battery without any degradation. In can become an infinite loop, thus reducing the eventual need for new materials. And it should also be noted that lithium batteries are also what power all consumer electronics. There are 9 Billion smartphone connections globally at present. The lifespan of a smartphone battery is much less than an EV because many smartphones are sadly discarded after only a couple years. There are billions of laptops as well going through the same short-life cycle. It's unwise to attack something selectively such as you are without a full contextual understanding of all the factors at play.

@@JimSmith-d9t The Green shift is not about destroying our economy. In fact it's quite the opposite. The opportunity in front of us, which is to move toward a society that is not only sustainable, but also prosperous is perhaps the greatest economic opportunity in human history. There is unlimited opportunity and potential for innovators to do what leading countries always do, and find new and better solutions to existing problems. Those who are heavily invested in oil are the ones who chose to put their proverbial eggs into one basket. But investors are beginning to realize that as renewable energy technology improves, it gets cheaper and the returns on investment dollars continue to widen. This is compared to oil and gas which increasingly becomes more expensive as we need to extract from more difficult locations while also adding the costs of carbon capture and sequestration. A fossil fuel economy doesn't make economic sense from a macro perspective. The reality is we don't have a knowing problem that's preventing us from achieving our true potential. Rather we have a thinking problem. And this is at our peril for not all countries are bound by regressive thinking and policies. As Wayne Gretzky explained as to how he became the most prolific goal scorer in hockey history, "I always skated to where the puck is going", will we keep looking to where the economy has been and dig in our heels...or do we accept the inevitability of change and work toward staying at the forefront of that change.

I like EVs but I haven't made the switch yet. The big thing that I've never really seen good data about is battery longevity. If I want to keep a car for more than 5 years, that range will be less and less. Battery replacements are still very expensive and when chemistry changes, a manufacturer may not even support a replacement.

Yeah that’s my only concern as well. Mileage proven to be much more than sufficient but no clear picture on longevity

There isn't a new EV on the market today with a warranty on the battery less than 8 years. And the threshold is 70% of range when new. EV battery longevity by and large has been exceeding original estimates and degradation has not been as much as first predicted. EVs lasting 10 years or more on original batteries are increasingly likely.

@@TheNovakReport yeah right, and this is great that car makers put an 8 year warranty on batteries to help adoption. Still personally I’m used to drive cars that are much much more than 8 years old, my current car is 15years old and still working fine so I’ll sell it for a pretty cheap price but still il’ sell it to someone when I’ll change to an EV. What’s unclear with EVs battery longevity is « will my battery still be alive in 15 years », or for people seeking for a cheap used EV car « how much should I buy this EV which ran less than 5000 miles per year but is 8 years old and thus not anymore under warranty »? I’m confident that in terms of cycles I can still use that battery quite a lot cause we have numerous exemples of highly cycled batteries over the world, but data on longevity (impact of time) requires time for the data to become available. We start having data from vehicles sold 10 years ago but this is still very limited and only 10 years old in a world where average car lifetime is around 15years (including accidents, external events and voluntary destruction) We know that batteries can c’ be changed, but the cost of it is pretty high so must be cautiously evaluated when buying a used car. Per today’s numbers I can trust 200kmiles to 300kmiles no worries with a battery but how long will I be able to use an 8 years battery. My next car will be an EV, probably a new one that I’ll keep for 10 years or more, so if you know about studies related to battery lifetime and how they degrade with age independent on mileage I’m very much interested and may even purchase a used EV instead of a brand new one
@TheNovakReport
@TheNovakReport 27 күн бұрын
@@svt1483 The threshold for 8 year warranties on batteries is that is will still maintain at least 70% of charge compared to new. So that would be the guaranteed floor and not ceiling after 8 years. You are correct in that long term data isn't fully available simply due to EVs in large quantities not being around long enough. But early results are showing that in many cases, predictions have been on the conservative side and that degradation and range loss have not been as much as was originally predicted.

The biggest contributor to resale value for EVs is actually the rapid pace of technology and advancement from generation to generation. People are less interested in older EVs if the newest ones keep getting better

@TheNovakReport
@TheNovakReport 27 күн бұрын
Exactly! And the Maverick today is the size of what the Ranger was back then as well. Everything in the Ford truck line up over the years has been super-sized, which makes little practical sense. If the entire purpose of a pick up truck was to carry tools or items in the bed that you can easily grab when you are stopped, what sense does it make that unless you're over 6-1/2 feet tall, you can't just reach over the side of an F-150 today and reach anything sitting on the bottom of the truck bed.

The Ford Ranger looks like an old person's truck. The Ranger Raptor is where it's at! Overall sales will go to Toyota Tacoma. But it's anyone's guess on the Raptor vs the TRD Pro.

The regular Ranger is rather pedestrian looking, that's true. But not everyone needs flash and pizzaz. The Toyota Corolla is about as "vanilla" a car as one can find, yet it's still the best selling passenger car around the world. There is still a market for bland design.

My first EV just turned 1 year old and overall, I'm very pleased with it (2024 Kia EV6 wind). Other than a piece trim popping loose, it has been flawless. I've also been able to use its bi-directional port capability to run my home furnace and fridge during a power outage (N/A on Tesla). The things I was concerned with have turned out to be non-issues. I was worried about staying warm, and of course, range. My range is advertised as 288 miles and I've found that to be conservative. It actually does a little better than even the on-board computer estimates. I would have liked to see more like 350 for the rare longer highway trip but this isn't bad. I could have made a great deal on a GT model but it's range is only 200 miles - that's a hard no for us. The EV makes a perfect second car. We mostly used it for around-town trips and for that, it's perfect. My advice to potential buyers: Don't buy one if you cannot charge at home. Apt or condo dwellers should really evaluate whether they are willing to spend the time sitting at a supercharger . It's also costly to charge away from home. In some places it may cost almost as much as filling up a gas powered SUV. Charging at home is cheap - we avg $20/month and I charge once a week. If an EV fits your needs then go for it. If not, don't make a costly mistake.

Thanks for your input! It's a good reminder that posted EV range, similar to posted fuel economy is simply a baseline. It's determined by a series of tests under controlled circumstances and should never be taken as literal in all cases. Good EV drivers will quickly learn how to achieve range on a single charge well in excess of what is posted at times, and without having to hyper-mile. It's often a case of not what you drive, but how you drive. And yes, MURB (multi-unit residential building) charging will be a challenge in the short term. Governments who control building codes will need to get involved to demand all new builds be wired accordingly. And for retrofits, governments should be prepared to offer assistance in making the necessary upgrades. Condo buildings will be wise to look into upgrading if they don't have the capacity yet. It won't be long before the resale value of a condo will be impacted by whether a potential buyer with an EV will have the ability to charge in their building or not. So, condo EV charging will soon be a matter that increases or decreases the value of your condo.

#2 - absolutely disagree. You do not understand the issue (or just trying to manipulate it in a way that’s easy for you to “debunk”). It’s not that “there are no EVs with good range”. There sure are, but they COST so much more than comparable ICE than the price offset is cost of gas for 100K-150K miles. The more or less comparable to ICE from the price perspective have range less than 300 miles. And don’t even start with that “oh, you don’t need even 200 miles because you’ll need to pee after 3 hours” story. It’s getting tired. 300 miles is the absolute bare minimum. You follow the 80% charge recommendation to save the precious battery life. You ride 90mph on a highway in 100F heat - and easily see losing charge almost twice as fast. You put your kayaks on a roof, or tow them on a trailer - same thing. And there aren’t chargers on the campsites, so you spend your precious time at charge stations. Another situation - I live in the city and go skiing on weekends 120 miles away. Range is much less in cold, and I don’t want to spend my weekend at chargers. There’s no chance for me to do that round trip with anything less than 300 “ideal” miles range. I’m pretty sure even 300 is not going to be enough in that case as highway speeds ratings differ a lot from the “ideal” ones. Car is convenience. I’m not going to pay for a much more expensive car that makes my life less convenient. I rented EVs many times for different conditions, so I experienced everything above first hand. Let me tell you this: when EVs the size of a Camry will have the range of Camry for the price of Camry - you would not have to make these kinds of videos.
@TheNovakReport

Why is 300 miles the absolute bare minimum? It's certainly not based on objective data showing the typical drive habits of both Americans and Canadians. That's an entirely subjective argument and it sounds like you are pre-disposed to be opposed to EVs anyway. For the record, and my channel has all the evidence you need, I review gas and EV regularly. So I don't have a rigid opinion on this. I just see these, and your arguments as more obstructionist than realist. You can reply if you want to think you can change my view, but you won't. Thanks for the comment!

+1, that video doesn’t say evs are better than ice on all situations. It says for most people they fit super well but few bias prevent to buy. Another argument could be just that stop burning petrol in cars might worse accepting few troubles like stopping 30minutes every 2h. And should you not trust this is good for our planet maybe you can agree it’s good for your country commercial balance cause this petrol will definitely find clients outside

@@TheNovakReport did you even read my comment? I clearly described why 300 miles is the absolute minimum for the EV, at least as a main/only household vehicle. Because 300 miles is basically lab-perfect range. There are tons of factors that make the real-life range considerably less. And I even gave some examples, which you conveniently ignored.
