2019 Stradic FL Unboxing and Upgrades | Gomexus Power Knob | Upping Bearing Count

In this episode of West Coast Florida Fishing we take a look at the brand new 2019 Stradic FL and unbox it for you guys live. We then take a look at upgrading the Stradic and we follow the same pattern we did with the FK series Stradic videos. We choose to upgrade the handle to a Gomexus Power Knob and upgrade a bearing for a bushing in the process of doing so.
We then upgrade the spool support bushing to a bearing ( Stella part number RD13274), followed by upgrading the worm gear bushing to a genuine Stella bearing RD 11018. The drag washers are already carbon fiber so there is no need to take those out and touch them at all.

I feel your pain in regards to the lil snafu you had with the knob bearing...I think I'm the only one that laughed at that...Awhile back before I had my system down. West Coast Florida Fishing Mods were super easy. One of the bearings was back ordered so it took a couple weeks to arrive, but they fit exactly. I also went with the 35mm knob instead of the 38, which works great for my purposes (PA bass and light inshore kayak fishing in the Delmarva area). Thanks again!

Great video!! For reference, the Shimano part RD17751 does not fit for 4000 and 5000 size reels for under the spool. The correct bearing size is 8x16x5.

Does replacing that plastic disc with a bearing on the shaft improve the spool wobble ? Mine still has the plastic instead of a bearing and it seems as if the spool wobbles and I was told that replacing it with a bearing will help… are the dimensions 7x11x3?

I think that those gears are not going to wear quickly as they’ve been used for decades and I have reels brought to me that are 30 years old with good nylon gears in it still!

IF you buy gomexus power knobs make sure you use loctite! They have a tendency to unscrew on their own. I’ve had handles fall off after a day of hammering fish

Hi, apologies for a slightly unrelated subject. I need to replace a handle knob on my Sustain 2500 FE, however Shimano Australia advised that the part is superseded. Can you suggest any aftermarket brands which can offer a knob replacement? Alternatively, can the whole handle assembly be replaced with the Gomexus 98mm double handle? Cheers

Any of the gomexus knobs will replace your handle actually! You can follow any of my gomexus tutorials and it should be the exact same. What year was your sustain??

Great question! Swapping these bushings for bearings provides less friction and resistance as your reel works, therefore creating an overall smoother experience!

It's heavier and the handle unbalanced and the spool bearing will corrode. I prefer German or Swiss ball bearings and the Swiss Ceramic are reel upgrade. Ceramics are in a different class by themselves.

Great video! I have the Stradic FL in the 1000, 2500 & 3500 sizes. Love these reels but the slop at the handle bothers me. What bearing did you end up using where the knob attaches to the handle?

Ben Anderson They’re amazing reels for sure! And that slip can be fixed with some shims but the bearing is the same as the stock one. And I ended up using the bearing with the part number RD13269

I have three of these reels in the 2500 version and have had to replace the roller bearings on multiple occasions due to corrosion and loud noise when reeling/working lures. Do you have a solution for this issue??

Yes all I do is pack that line roller with shimano grease and that will make the line roller lady a lot longer

They will work exactly the same the only difference between the 2500-3000 is the depth of the spool!

A few people have been saying that the smaller FL's are good and strong but, the bigger 4000 and 5000's the drag Doesn't hold up against big fish like people thought. Will doing these upgrades help it out alot ? Thank you

I’m not sure about increasing the drag power and preformance as we didn’t touch the drag system at all.. unfortunately the drag is going to stay the same all the way up. The only thing I could think of is to use a more high quality carbon fiber to allow enough heat to dissipate faster and allow the drag to withstand more.. sorry I wish I helped!

well i did the same upgrades to my fl.. added a pva knob though cause when i fish its often about freezing and having a steel knob isnt that nice then.. shimming the knob was by far the most work.. had to reinstall like 6 times to get it right.. overall the handle/ handle bearings makes the most improvement for me..

Just got the exact same reel... Didn't know there were upgrades that can be. Never done just tried servicing stadic fk 3000 the other.. First trying to service my own reel.. Worm everything taking apart.. Was a mission and now my anti reverse isn't working. Will have to open again and look. Yes you can put bearing in according to size of the nylon bushing it doesn’t have to have a compatitable part with another reel. Yeah servicing them can be tricky I like to record myself just to see where things go back sometimes! Did you get your reel fixed?

I bought a CI4+ the other day by a friends recommendation; I did not realize after getting home with my new reel and did some research that this new FL model had been released and the new CI4+ is anticipated to be released sometime this coming year. So today i exchanged the CI4+ for the FL and plan on picking up a CI4+ when the updated model comes out. You think I made the right move? Couldn’t stand to think that my new CI4 would soon be an out going model within a few months of owning it. I’m pairing my Stradic FL with a 7ft St Croix Tidemaster. Definitely plan on doing the upgrades you did to yours!

Make sure you’ve added the proper about of shims or else it will get too tight on the handle and not work correctly.

How tight are you supposed to tighten the knob screw? I had to very lightly tighten mine in order for the knob to spin well. Anything tighter and it wouldn’t spin hardly.

Improper shimming can cause this. Review your shim placement.

6atlantis great question actually!! The superior reel would be the Stradic FL due to the massive upgrades with the long stroke spool, micromodule 2 gears from the Stella, and the new sealing design!

They typically come with some slight “gear lashing” which can be fixed by adding a shim onto the main gear and I will make a video about that in the near future but as of now, your reel is normal 😁

There is a size difference between the 2500,3000 and the 4000,5000 but not a difference between 2500 and 3000. Also no difference between 4000 and 5000. This is why you see a “C”3000 that ‘C’ is noting a compact reel=same body size. Different spool Size. Same with the ‘C’5000 and the 4000. Thanks for the comment!

Vegh good question! The worm gear bushing is the same size but the spool support beading is a different size.. look up the part number for the bearing on the spool support shaft for the 4000 size Stella and that’s the bearing I would use! Good luck with your prodject!

Process for knob is... remove handle and existing bushing, add 1dt bearing (is there no shim/washer put on before this?) then put on the new handle on followed by 2nd bearing and a shim/washer) lastly fastening screw and top part of knob. Simon Trudgen yep you cleared it all up for me! I add usually 1 OR 2 shims before putting the bushing on then the handle knob and then the bearing and then the shim and then the screw. It all depends on how much play your handle has after installing the new knob!! Shim it to your liking! It varies with each reel so it’s hard to say “put two in” because that couldve shimmed it too much. Use your judgement best!

El Petazeta yeah bro absolutely! So the reason there is a little a handle play is because of the space between the main gear and the pinion gear. To reduce the handle play (or space) in between the gearing you must shim it out with gears underneath the bearing closes to the non-teeth side of the gear. Great question! If that doesn’t solve it then you might be looking at a handle knob that isn’t properly shimmer and that can be easily done by taking the knob off and adding a small shim until comfortable. You gave me a great idea for a video so if any of this does not make sense I will be creating a video on how to reduce the handle play in a Stradic so stay subscribed to the channel and make sure you have notifications on so you can get notified when I upload it! -Isaac

Jean-Baptiste Schalber if you’ve unscrewed the knob enough then you can pull on the whole handle knob and it should pull off.. my only suggestion is to keep unscrewing the screw if the handle doesn’t pull off.. The bearings are slightly different for some of the different sizes I have a few different videos on the 3000 reel and the 1000 reel so far and I plan to make more! The difference between HG FLand the standard XGFL is the gear ratio is extra high gear when it’s the standard XG.

Actually.. once.. I was upgrading a reel for one of my customers and I did hear a very faint scratch noise but it felt like it wasn’t doing anything drastic to the reel so I left it alone.

I did these bearing upgrades on my ci4+ Stradic recently. It felt fine out of the box, but after the upgrade, I was getting a clicking on the shaft moving up. I made sure the worm gear pawl and the screw that holds the plate over the worm gear bearing were tightened down enough, and it went away. I think there was play in the gear that wasn't supposed to be there. I couldn't feel anything, though, could only hear it.
