I used to have a TW and sold it for a drz. The TW was terrible to ride off road in comparison. The tires made it easy to ride but speed and comfort suffered.
@terk4360
@terk4360 4 жыл бұрын
@@ParkerLumpee All depends on the terrain. Where I ride (NY ADK region) it tends to be heavy growth forests with decently sandy loam so low end and the ability to drop your feet really come in handy. As someone who's ridden 200/250s, 400s, 650s, and twosmokes I would say that while the drz and dr650 are great for roads, fireroads and even "trails" when it comes to proper offroading/trailbreaking where I am the tdub and most other 250cc bikes excel above bigger bikes.

@@terk4360 Must be a terrain thing. Where I am the standard is rocks, and lots of them. My TW really didn't like riding off 3 foot rock ledges but the DRZ doesn't flinch. After about 5 times bottoming out the front TW shock, I'd had enough.

Yeah, if the environment calls for either speed or suspension the TW isn't going to do crap for you. But hey if they made a bike that could do it all then I wouldn't need a 5bike garage

I live in Boise, ID and just bought a DRZ400 about a year ago. It has been the perfect bike for me. I live right next to the mountains and desert so i wanted something i could explore on but still commute to work on. It has accomplished those goals and more! It's a bike that isn't the best at any one thing but it's good for everything! What I really like about the DRZ is that its so simple. There isn't a single part of the bike i would feel uncomfortable working on.

The reason the front brake feels weak on the road is because that model DRZ400 is primarily an offroad bike. If you installed a front brake that had good power on the street it would be sketchy as all hell offroad with zero feel and no ability to modulate in loose slippery conditions. The DRZ400SM comes with a larger rotor that gives decent stopping power on the street because it's primary duty is on the street with sticky tires
@FishStick_ADV
@FishStick_ADV 4 жыл бұрын
It also has to do with a smaller rotor being safer to run off road do to the additional ground clearance. The larger rotor is more susceptible to contact with obstacles and such an event could easily leave you stranded with a bent rotor in the middle of nowhere...

You can significantly improve the front brake by fitting a stainless steel braided line, and changing the compound of the pads. Neither is an expensive upgrade. I installed the ACT wide ratio gears and with the bored and stroked engine it easily cruises at 75mph all day, then I go offroad. It’s not perfect, but it’s not bad either

Tip if you're buying at new from the dealer and you're over 200 lb. At the end of making your deal once the price has been set throw in the fact that you want the rear suspension stiffened to match your weight. Geometry on this bike makes a huge difference in its handling both on and off road. As far as customizing if you're a bigger guy like me you will need mirrors that come out wider unless you just want to look at your shoulder and chest. Power modifications include what the video producer specified. There's basically three things you can do. I did an aftermarket exhaust which did make a noticeable difference and I also have the carburetors jetted mostly because I live here in Colorado at altitude. I have not done what they called a six pack which is a different air intake system. I've heard that it does make a difference but not hugely.

In Australia they specifically use DRZ400’s for the motorcycle adventure tours. They take those DRZ’s through dense environments with the most extreme terrain. I’ve seen them take DRZ’s through four feet of water to cross rivers created by monsoons. Those bikes are unkillable, and will go anywhere. Btw you guys need to get a Yamaha TW200 for a giveaway. I’d love to see you get to experience how awesome it is off-road, and I’d love to win one of those. Also a Tenere 700 would be my dream bike! Thanks for all the content, and take care guys.

That was good, except for some of the audio. I'm happy to see you have caught the bug for dirt. You need to start taking some low speed falls though. Noobie dual sport riders drop their bikes A LOT ! Once you get to the point that dropping the bike doesn't bother you any more, the frequency of falls should start to decline. Put some hand guards on bikes you take off road so that you don't have to replace levers all the time. (The DRZ also needs case savers.) I think you might have given another shout out to eveRide who seems to have been an influence on you here, Thanks for the video!

about breaks for dual sport, you don’t want strong brakes on off roads because you have mostly loose dirt and gravel or slippery mud. hard braking will leave you vulnerable for instability off-road. do not look for strong brakes among dual sports on highways

love my DRZ 400S, I bought this brand new in 2007 for $5200 out the door. I made some of the standard mods and it runs great! I have no problem passing the newer bikes on trails and is more comfortable too. It has great passing power on the freeway even in the top gears, although I still wish that it had that 6th gear. The bike has never failed me yet it is very reliable.(Come on Suzuki! Update the bike just a little and you might have a second renaissance on your hands). By the way, I ride 65 mph+ pretty comfortable.

Did you colour the video to make it look retro to suit that old-school 2002 bike? Also there's a lot of guys who ride the DR-Z400 a lot faster on the highway for longer distances, not sure if that's due to mods helping performance, I know doing 110km/h for the first time was a bit scary but had no issues, the five speed is genuinely annoying. Also the Scrambler has road brakes, the DR-Z much more off-road orientated.

The white looks cool. I was sold in the 250l until I rented it. It’s too weak for my size. It had to be in 1st to go up anything. Kinda annoying. I liked it other than that. The lack of power was kinda nice it the technical stuff though. Little mistakes were easy to correct. Does the drz feel heavy compared to the 250 dual sports? The 450l seems cool too but expensive and the maintenance sucks. I just don’t know if the drz will suck in the tighter stuff. I hated how the 250l couldn’t break the tire loose when I wanted it to. Any suggestions?

I feel like he's going to buy one for himself, if you want traction off road grab some Kenda K760's and make sure you get rim locks so you can run lower tire psi atleast for the rear. If you get SM wheels it definitely opens up its ability to ride the roads, that's why everyone usually gets a second set of wheels for these. Change the pads out and get braided lines and the brakes will feel 10x better. Definitely put a real skid plate on there and get some guards, dumping it over in the dirt or the road will protect atleast the weakest parts for the most part. Dirt is where I started, on a 100cc 2 stroke dual sport and I went everywhere which is the best part of bikes like these

Is the DRZ400 SM better on the highway or is the brakes just as bad too?

I bought a new 18 drz400sm for my first bike back in march and i love it! I rode from jacksonville to key west and it sucked but the bike was 100% stock at the time I wont do it again atleast not in one day, i wouldnt ride the bike any more than 200 miles in a day at this point lol but i think my next bike will end up being a MT09 but thats not going to happen for a couple years

I live in Vietnam and drive a 150cc dual sport but really want a bigger and better bike. There are a few DRZ's. I would definitely switch out the instrument cluster for a Trail Tech unit.

Put a wind screen on it and Change out the front fender you can ride this bike 70 mph all day long. Is it as nice as a KTM790 on the highway? No but going over a mountain pass to get to a trail is an awesome experience one I recommend as a must to understanding this bike. Another is riding an intermediate graded trail up the rest of the mountain

I had a Honda 996 Superhawk for years, then a Honda 919 street bike. I bought a used WR250R and it's straight up changed my life. Riding off-road is so much fun! But, you have to be prepared for a flat and repairs on the trail, ask me how I know.. So worth it, I'll never not own an off-road motorcycle from now on

You should look into tubliss. Makes flats a non issue and you can run super low PSI

I'm currently considering getting a motorcycle and was wondering if there is anything about the DR-Z400 that would make it a bad beginner bike (Aside from the seat height)?

I can't speak on drz400, but I got a drz250, I'm not very tall I'm about 5'7, drz250 is a inch shorter then the 400 but it is manageable in my case with boots I fit well on that bike, bit late now considering you said that 2 years ago but thought to share my input

Not sure if they still make them but the 600cc 650? Would have been a better all around dual sport for me anyways
