Overall, the best motorcycle ever made. Smoothest v-twin ever of any displacement. Best handling mass produced bike ever - has always held the speed record on Palomar mountain (Palomar, CA - 7 miles of some of the most windy roads on the planet). Light inexpensive & fuel efficient - it puts most bikes to shame. Perfect starter bike, perfect ONLY bike for riders of all skill levels from beginner to expert. Also, #1 for real-world commuting and engines with as much as 400K miles!

Agree. Tried many bikes and recently traded a 2006 bandit 1200 for a 2005 sv650. I didnt have high expectations, just wanted something lighter and more frugral. What a surprise, for my riding style is peefect and even though not as powerful on straight line as the b12 it puts the bigger bike on shame when cornering. Its is also addictive due to acceleratikn noise and leovince can. Also, 4,3l/100km when travelling and 5l with no mercy on throttle.

I bought a new 2000 sv and rate it one of the best balance of goodness ever mass produced. The 1st gen had weak suspension but after upgrades the bike handled incredibly...no fear in corners. I just bought a 2019 cb500x and love the bike even more than my sv of yore The cb has that same great character of all around goodness, handling, versatility and ease of use plus a pretty damn good suspension right out of the crate. So many excellent machines to choose from nowadays.

I have a 2015 CB500X and a 2019 SV650. I bought the SV a year after the X. Now the X sits in the garage unless I know I am riding dirt roads or I need to carry stuff. The SV is more fun to ride.

Totally agree with Suzuki development. I had a Vstrom 1000 in 2004 and 2007 and bought a new Vstrom 1000 XT in 2019 and damm how far did the bike come. No more soft suspension and week brakes. Lighter, tourque lower down. Suzuki knows how to go forward like a BMW 3 series. Same story just better over the years.

I'm an SV fan, but other than the paint job, this is just a standard SV with extra plastic and lower bars. What the bike ought to be is a slightly better suspension and brakes, better seat and 25 lbs less weight. And disappointingly, for 2020 there are no upgrades for the SV at all.

Still a great bike. Ironically, they dropped the SV650 a few years' back (2209) in favour of the SFV650 Gladius but the plastic cladded look of the Gladius never really caught on. Some called it "Girlie" or "Effeminate" . I'm not going to comment on that, but a few years later the SV650 was reintroduced and benefitted from the engine enhancements which were part of the Gladius project (different pistons, ceramic coated cylinder bores and a host of other parts as you quite rightly pointed out Adam). I believe in some markets the two models ran side-by-side for a time before the SFV was eventually dropped. I suspect the sales of each model told Suzuki all they needed to know.

If you want a bike without character and more preformance, get the CB650R. Sounds like shit, looks cool, very neutral riding experience. If you want a bike with character which is fun to ride, get the Suzuki. But because it has less cyllinders it will not outpreform the cb650r in terms of speed. Love the looks, simplicity and refined design of the bike. Would like to see the smallest of lower engine cowels to hide the forward exhaust pipe. This engine has always been about function over form, and a small, black cowel would protect the exhaust, hide the oil filter, and clean things up a little while not drawing any attention. Yeah it would slightly ruin the stripped down, cafe racer concept, but if it were small enough, it might work well.
@thinkdunson
@thinkdunson 5 жыл бұрын
negative, ghost rider. i love the fact there is nearly zero body work on this bike. for someone who does all his own maintenance, it's an absolutely beautiful design. i just had to replace my radiator, and didn't have to do a single thing, other than unbolt the actual radiator. other nakeds have some sort of cowling covering up stuff like that. if i had to remove a cowl to change the oil filter, it would suck.
@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto 5 жыл бұрын
@@thinkdunson I have to agree. Removing a cowl to change the oil filter would be annoying. My daily ride is a '97 Suzuki bandit 1200. I've always love it for the fact that the engine is just hanging out there for all to see. However, in the case of the Bandit the lines of the stainless steel exhaust are a bit more pleasing to see. On this thing... not as much, but the argument for function over form is a good one. Cheers! 🍻👍

Well, if there was no oil pressure a quarter of a second after the engine started, it would seize going it’s normal ~1500 rpm startup/warmup period anyway, am i right? They did it better with the S, IMO. I've always said that if you took a naked bike and gave it a full fairing, that's the perfect bike. Slightly rearward midset controls, mostly upright handlebars, and a fairing for wind protection while not having a giant ass windscreen that causes buffeting. Get them mirrors really aero-shaped and off the handlebars, too.

I liked my 18 650x for a year before going to a litre. The clip-on's weren't that nice on a long trip. Day to day commuting was great. The brakes were a bit novice orientated having to really pull on the lever in an emergency was not ideal either. With a AM can the v-twin sounded awesome, and quite a bit louder. The suspension was better than my gsx-s surprisingly enough, until going wide open that is on usual open NZ roads. Overall i found it a bit heavy for only a 650 at 196kg wet. My 1200r is only 198kg dry mind. Apart from cafe styling the price just like the GSX-S was the main attraction. Hmmm... mine put out 75hp according to specs. Nice informative\fair review. Thanks.

I had a hard time choosing this vs regular SV. In the end, I chose regular SV. But this *DOES* have somethings I wish was on my SV: 1) The better brakes. This has radial master cylinder and higher-spec tokico calipers. 2) This has higher spec front suspension that is adjustable.
@c__walker__jr

11:24 he says that it has been changed to an axial pump style master cylinder. which is generally not as good as radial. he never actually specifies how the calipers are mounted... he just says they're new and better. but looking at pics, they're also axial.

I think Suzuki missed the mark on styling by a long shot though. Also, not a big deal, but the dash is super cheesy and sucks. Just use something similar to like the Z900RS...normal gauges. I think everyone most people would appreciate that.

Great bike & review. I genuinely think this is one of the best all round bikes ever when you take everything in to account including price. If only Suzuki would give it some fully adjustable suspension! Incidentally all SV's do now have preload adjustable front forks for 2019, in Europe at least.

@@noudgoertz Not on the updated standard 2016 SV. Fork preload adjustment was later added to the standard bike for the 2019 model year after it was first fitted to the SV650X.

I have tons of experience with Suzuki’s 645 cc liquid-cooled 4-stroke 8-valve DOHC 90° V-twin Twin Swirl Combustion Chambered Twin with two spark plugs per cylinder . . . it’s a jewel! However, the rest of the package is obsolete. I’d say it was just long in the tooth but, compared against other manufacturers’ offerings for similar prices the bike hasn’t got teeth, or at least a full set. Sorry Suzuki, my loyalty is waning. I think it’s wonderful that you can offer a decent rock solid reliable bike for a decent price, but stop forcing people to rip off and replace the components that under perform. Keep the base model and offer an upgraded model for more money.

Thanks Adam, that was good. How was the throttle response? I have heard it is abit jerky, true?
@juanposada9319

I have a regular 2018 SV and yes, they are very twitchy. I changed my throttle tube to a throttle tamer and it helped a bit, but it's still jerky. The solution (which I haven't gone for) is getting a power commander and dyno.

Juan Posada that’s so disappointing, one of the most important things is good throttle control and a lot of manufactures can’t get throttle response right....

i don't know why they even have the gauge. the temp is rock solid. i had my coolant leak out on one of my daily commutes (70 miles, one way), and the gauge didn't move all the way back home, even though i let it completely drain out before refilling it. instead of the temp gauge, it should just be an overheat light on the side, and replace the gauge with an outside air thermometer.

Great review- iv always been intrigued by this bike, but went with a left over duke 690 which runs about same price as one of these. Duke offers a tad more power with pretty significant weight savings, but something still draws me to this Suzuki. Maybe the simplicity and tried and true history it has. Great class of motorcycles...don’t really need much more for street riding IMO
@thinkdunson
@thinkdunson 5 жыл бұрын
the difference is kind of intangible. even if the 690 duke and sv650 had the same basic specs, there would be lots of difference in the ride. this bike hits a LOT of sweet spots that are hard to define. you just have to ride it and see for yourself.

Suzuki how about "R" model , go to a parts bin take out some adjustable suspension, brakes from GSX-R. There are enough of us looking for a mid size canyon/track ready machine from the showroom floor. These bikes are not "beginner only" bikes, look at the number of them on the track. Just look at Triumph. Just a thought

@thinkdunson

the z400 is not the same as the ninja. the riding position makes a significant difference. more upright is more comfortable, and feels like it has more control. the ninja will have slightly better wind protection, but that just takes some getting used to. i would always recommend the z.
