Update: I have a 2019 SV650ABS and love it. It is nimble but also feels planted in turns. The other day I was accelerating relatively hard from around 55 mph and I noticed the bike fishtailing left and right several times. At first it seemed like a tank slapper, something I had never experienced before. However, it turned out to be some kind of oil slick on the road causing the rear wheel to lose traction. I later saw the culprit, a vintage Ferrari spraying, not dripping, some fuel/oil/water mixture from the exhaust. I am not a racer and had never experienced anything like it. I do remember not cutting the throttle abruptly and let the bike move. Remarkably, it straightened itself out, and I did not have to put my Tech-Air 5 vest to the test. I think that the bike’s stability was aided by its overall well sorted chassis and geometry. I am left terrified but also have gained some confidence in the rider friendliness of the SV650. I’ll keep riding and will pay even more attention to road conditions. I thought I’ll share this with the hope that someone may also learn from it and also consider the SV650 as a super fun bike that handles well even in tricky situations. I’ll post this on other sites as well and am curious what people think.

I test rode this 3 years ago when I bought my FZ-07. Absolutely no complaints about the SV650. It's the perfect all-around middleweight naked sports bike. I also tested the Z650, CB650F, and CBR500R. I was going to buy the SV650 until I tested the FZ-07 last. I test rode each bike once until I tried the FZ-07. It got my heart racing so I test rode it again and again. It was the only bike that put a huge smile on my face. I'm thinking people are calling this an entry-level bike which is wrong. It's a wolf in sheep's clothing. It's a hooligan bike that's under-priced. Insurance companies (in Canada) didn't and still don't realize this which is great for me.

I'm a long time motorcyclist and first time viewer...I must whole heartedly commend you on absolutely hitting the nail on the head with your mantra of 'Nothing to Prove' when riding. Fantastic! That really encapsulates, to me, the purist mindset a rider can possess when riding on the street, either riding alone or in a group setting to truly enjoying the 'ride'.

I bought a 2020 after wanting an SV650 for many years, since the second gen that I sadly have yet to own. There’s a reason Suzuki has been making this engine for twenty years, and they’ve kept it relevant. The chassis (after two steps up on the rear preload) is better than the MT-07, so are the brakes, but they really are different bikes. This video says it all. My only complaint is the hard seat (for road feel according to Suzuki) which is lower than it needs to be and therefore sacrifices leg room. Overall though, it’s excellent, and one of the most overlooked and criminally underrated middleweight bikes. I blame the Yamaha.

I had one of these for 14 months and 14590km, for a complete beginner, before I traded it for my current s1000r (nearly 40000km on that) I wish I had kept it as a second bike. They are so easy to ride, so much fun and strangely cool. All I did to it was lane splitter bar ends, tail tidy and brighter globes. Fabulous thing.

I went from an 02 SV to a 17, the new one has less character but otherwise it's a fantastic bike, handles much MUCH better, brakes better even with the 2 piston calipers and has all the amenities of a modern bike. The seat is terrible and way less space under it though. I've been riding for 10 years and love that thing, no need to get much bigger I wanna keep my driver's license. This is by far the best bike compared to the z650 and mt07, handles much better and has the best engine. too bad it doesn't sell that well, people like manga anime styling nowadays I guess. I prefer the classic looks of this one.

Going to do some serious touring on it. "Ride like there's nothing to prove" is a good advice. Take a break from motorcycling when you get a family. They need you! I did my test on this. I was impressed overall. Unfortunately lost the vote to the Honda CB500x. Took long enough to make my decision. Two different style bikes of similar price range. Just bought a silver/blue bike 2weeks ago and have put over 1000 miles on it already ...OMG it is so much fun!! Traded in a 2019 Tracer in that had so much helmet wind noise even with ear plugs that l hated riding it and put less than 4k on it in almost a years time . The SV also has a better shifting tranny then the Tracer did. I have been looking at SVs on and off since 1999 when they first came out in the states and glad l finally bought one just sorry l waited this long. I have already bought a rad guard, fender eliminator, and Scorpion slip-on , next is a rear shock and a DDC drop in damper kit for the fork and this bike will handle even better than it already does ! The engine is a peach on this thing ! If your on the fence about getting an SV fall off already and get one don't wait as long as l did cuz your missing out !

I love the mid range naked bikes. Suzuki SV650 and my Yamaha MT-07 to me are the very best bikes! The combination of speed, handling, lightness, smoothness is just A+... whether a new or experienced rider mid naked racers are just too much fun and can’t get tired of them. I have a 2016 Yamaha mt-07 but I really really like the Suzuki sv650 as well.. might need to have two motorcycles then.

I purchased a 2019 SV650 a little less than a year ago. I also have a 2012 FJR1300, 2003 Ducati 800SS and 2015 Honda CB500X. In the last 11 months I have put 10,000 miles on the SV and about 2,000 on the other bikes combined. The FJR would have gotten more but no touring for me during a pandemic. The SV is easily more fun than the others. The Duc can be fun but only at higher speeds with little traffic. If you get caught in traffic at 45mph and under for a while the neck and shoulder pain makes you want to trailer it home. The SV is happy everywhere except a dirt road. I paid just over $6000 USD for this bike and it feels worth more. It doesn't ride like a budget bike and all the modern electronics are unnecessary when you properly power the bike.

Great review! Couldn't agree more. Have a 2019 SV650ABS and at 6'2" 185 pounds still fits me well. I rotated the bars forward a bit and put an MRA wind screen on, and now it is good even for longer rides and at highway speeds. I rode a lot of bikes, some quite a bit more expensive but the SV has always been the most fun. The suspension is ok even on the crappy roads in the US compared to German roads. I also like the looks, classic lines but not trying too hard to be retro. So for me this is really all the bike i ever need and think that this would be the case for most bikers. Reliability is also outstanding and there are lots of aftermarket parts too. Cant go wrong with it.

Had a 2017 SV650 and man it was heaps of fun. Haven't had that much fun on a bike since the Duke 200 I rode around on in India. I think for 2020 they updated the break callipers and the suspension also had a refresh. These were the only two areas I could complain about after getting used to it and wrangling it around in the Alps so it's great to see Suzuki improve them. I loved it so much that for my next bike I wanted something that would be the same feel, just more premium. The Monster 821 came close, which is no surprise as the SV was initially introduced as the budget Monster. Still the best fun/price ratio for any bike I had experience with.

I love that engine ever since I testrode the 650 V-Strom. And that makes me think of the big (personal) problem of the SV. She is too small for a guy like me, I'm 6ft 3in, and for that reason I never got to ride her. Anyway, I think she is just great and the engine is the biggest reason for it. Good video. Take care Scott.

could u recommend something similar for that height? first time in my life i wish i wasnt so tall
@simonlutt9849
@simonlutt9849 4 жыл бұрын
@@LuXxenatorX Well, usually I like to recommend the Suzuki V-Strom. She uses the same engine as the SV, but with a bit more focus on the torque. Yes, she is kind of an Adventure-Bike, but she is no Offroadbike after all. But if you want a Naked-Bike in this class tall enough for a huge guy like us, you might be in for a disappointment. The SV is an entry-level bike and the other bikes around are all equally build. The Yamaha MT-07 might be the tallest bike in that class, but is still quite tiny. The first Naked-Bike tall enough is the Kawasaki Z1000, but she is almost a Power-Naked, as well as the Triumph Speed Triple and the KTM Super Duke 1290. Maybe, just maybe the new KTM 890 Duke fits you. But I am not sure about that. The problem in recommending a bike for a total stranger is, that one can't possibly know what kind of driver you are, what experience you have, how much money you want to/can spend on the bike and if you are open for any other suggestions. Usually we are almost tied to the Adventure-Bikes. But if you're just looking for a bike for short trips even the SV will do fine. Still... The longer the trips get, the more you want to sit on a bike like the V-Strom, a Triumph Tiger, etc. You'll have to try! Testride every possible bike you can get your hands on. Try different styles of bikes and you will find your bike eventually.

@simonlutt9849 4 жыл бұрын
@@kylebrodie5860 Well, I'd like to think it is up to your own personal perspective and demands. When you use your bike to get to work or for shorter trips even a small bike can satisfy a tall guy. But if you expect your bike to get you from Paris to Rome and back in the most comfortable manner you surely want a bigger bike and in that way a tall touring bike like a Honda GoldWing or a BMW GS (Adventure) or.... Another thing for you or me is humour. You should have loads of that, because people will approach you and tell you that your bike looks like a pocketbike with you as the rider. I know that, because it happened to me all the time.

Someyhing I would suggest is a new seat - might add some height for big guys, and the current seat is pretty hard

I've got a Yamaha Tenere 700 at the moment and it's a great bike, but it's just not the bike for me for various reasons. I want to go back to a naked bike with 17" wheels, and I was looking at a Yamaha MT-09 SP, but then this bike piqued my interest. It was one I had looked a while back, but it had gone off my radar, until now. I'm a more experienced rider theses days and I thought why should I pay all that money for something I really wouldn't use to its fullest. The bike is a great price even new, and Suzuki seem to do a lot of good deals compared to other manufacturers, so I'm off to my local dealer tomorrow to have a look at an SV650. Another bonus is I have two Suzuki dealerships not that far away from me, other dealerships are all miles away. Yea, with this bike you don't need a quick shifter, I think the only time that I used the clutch was when starting from a stop, then after that...it's not needed...blip up or down...no matter this transmission handled it with-out a hick-up. 👍😁

The 650 V twin has so much to commend it, however, the cut down front mudguard serves some sort of purpose, one supposes, but not in the wet. The pillion passenger, will need to be fit and able, with an arse like concrete, and feet super glued to the foot rests.

I have this bike. It's absolutely fantastic in general. However 1 problem I have had is the paint on the frame, front fork tree and wheels is flaking and now rusting and suzuki warranty wasn't interested at all... I do live in Scotland, so it does take more of a pounding than most places... however, none of my other bikes have ever had paint flaking like this, especially to the extent that my suzuki is doing it. Then for Suzuki to refuse to deal with it means it will be the last suzuki I ever buy... which is unfortunate because it is a fantastic little bike other than the shoddy paint work and the horrible support from the warranty.

I had the same question this year: used MX5 NC/ND or brand new SV650 2020 (as my first moto in my life). I chose new SV650 :) in the same painting: black/red and I think it was a great choice. Almoust 4000 km of mileage now. A had few trips 550km ,11 hours of riding through Poland and it was GREAT. MX5 is nice car, but it is still a CAR. I was searching somethink new. Now my SV is NEW, cheaper than used MX5 and maybe more fun, because SV650 is something different from 4 wheels despite of the fact that mx5 is fun vehicle too :) . I like very much mx5, but sound of V2 of Suzi is better. I love V engines. Ford Mustang is too expensive. But new SV650 I can have in my life and it is great opportunity for V-engine fans :D . Greetings from Poland :)

Was on the SV650 last year to get my license. The engine/sound is awesome and it is real fun to ride. The suspension/chassis is not amazing but good enough for the price i guess. It can brake fine but the feeling/feedback is not great. Bikes at the riding school get abused and you can't adjust em, so brand new the experience might be better. I bought a Triumph Street Triple after getting my license and you can tell the difference in quality and road feel. For the price the Suzuki has been hard to beat, but it is getting a bit long in the tooth with the looks and tech. The new Kawasaki Z650 is only a €300 more over here and quite a bit more up to date with a new TFT, lower weight etc. The MT-07 is also only €300 more. Next year when most bikes will be updated for euro5 is going to be a good time to buy i think. Going to be interesting to see what Suzuki will come up with.

yea, it's time for Suzuki to update this, I'm curious to see what they will do to keep up with the Z650 and also the MT07 will be updated next year too, curious to see that update too. It's kind of nice to have so much choice for us "riders" that we can sit back and compare and "nitpick" these bikes down to the nth degree. It's great! 👍

BTW I don't know if the European models have this quirk but on all suzuki motorcycles in the USA the speedometer always reads 5 MPH higher than your actual speed. So if the speedometer says you're going 65 mph you're actually going 60 mph. I have verified this with GPS on three different suzuki bikes: SV650, V-strom 650, and Burgman 400. It's not a big deal but I can't say I like it. Would prefer to just have the true speed.
@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve 4 жыл бұрын
All OEM's do it. It law that they can't be under when the vehicle is sold new. The standard for cars is usually around 4-6% over actual and the usual for motorcycles is more...usually, BMW is usually around 3-4% over. Honda's, I've owned 4 of them, were all around 10% over and KTM 1290SDR was a little more than 10%. So it's nothing that "just" Suzuki is doing, it's really a CYA so they don't get sued by the Govts. Ride safe, Scott

@mindspinn311
@mindspinn311 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve owned a Versys 650 and ridden the Z650. The SV is a very different bike to the Z, in ergonomics, feel, and engine character. I much prefer the SV’s 90° v-twin pulsing sound and vibration to the buzz of the 180° parallel twin of the Z, but it’s still a competent and fun bike to ride. Especially with the MT-07 in the mix the SV often is overlooked, and I think it’s the most criminally underrated bike in the class. It’s old school and modern in the right amounts.

@NothingToProve 4 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, there is a big difference in performance. Over double the power and performance in the chassis, brakes, suspension...etc. For about 25% increase in weight. So great trade off from a paper point of view. Fun factor, about 400% increase, as the for the cost, it's only about a 1k more than the 310R, so a great machine for the money, well, the best bang for buck in the middleweight naked group imho. This is the bike I want my wife to get next year but we still have to wait for the Triumph Trident to come out and see if she will like that better. Ride safe, Scott

@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve Жыл бұрын
Wow, that's a long time, you might want to find out the "rest of the story" before buying this bike. Check the title, see if it's been totaled or something like that first, if they won't show you the title, just walk away, period. With that said, if it's not an "accident" bike, then you have the problem of seals, nuts, bolts, cables...etc. not properly functioning and getting lubed...etc. over the years, so rust is an issue too, so check them closely. But if everything is checked, you may run into some problems that take time to come to the surface, so it's really up to you if you want to take a chance on this bike. Since it's a dealership and if you trust them, see if they will do a 1 year warranty and then ride it like you stole it during that period to see if any issues come up. take care, Scott

Only a 2011 Monster 1100evo because that is my favorite Monster of all time, the last of the air cooled big Monsters. Just FYI. Ducati dealers around me don't want me doing videos of their bikes...it's that simple, I've been to 2 different dealers over 10 times in the last 2 years and rode only one bike, the V2. So I don't go to them any more asking to ride their bikes because it's simply a waste of my time and energy. I'm too little to get their attention as of yet. :( I think I need more than 100k subscribers, then I'm privileged enough to ride a Ducati. LOL!

Hey Scott. Well, your reaction to this bike is all I had to hear! The fun and enjoyment in your voice let's me know that this bike gives you something some of the others don't. I love this engine / trans combo, love the chassis, just really like the whole thing. For what it is, you have a winner here. So where does it rank? I want to watch the MT-07 vid one more time, but so far I would put this bike 2nd to the Mt-07. The Honda is very nice, but for some reason it doesn't grab me, even though I like that engine best. Maybe I should watch that one again too! And then there is the new Trident coming down the road. Playing Devils advocate, if you have to move the Trident in and want to keep the bike count to only 4, the Z650 would be out. Again, that is just me.
@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve 4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for your comments on all 4 bikes Dennis! Yea, this is the most exciting and engaging emotionally bike of the 4. Every component just works so well together that all the parts "gel" and the bike becomes part of you and it becomes "we" and not rider + bike. You become one with the bike, not many bikes do that to me, say maybe 1 in 20 bikes I ride do this to me and this is one of those bikes. An OEM can put premium components on a bike (like the CB650R) but to make those components compliment each other and feel as one, that is the key and Suzuki nailed it here with this bike. The only OEM that does this consistently for me is Moto Guzzi, the V7 & V9 come to mind right away, I will own one, one day, when I can afford to have a "play" bike 😁 Ride safe my friend and take care, Scott
