I own both a 4Runner and a Jeep and decided to write in case someone might be interested in my ownership thoughts over the years. My 4Runner is a 2006 Limited V8 (the 4th 4Runner I've owned - I had a '86, '88, and '94) and my Jeep is a 2012 Wrangler Sahara (with all options except front winch - it is my first Jeep). Comparing my first three 4Runners to my 2012 Jeep seems more appropriate as they all have a lot more in common. My 2006 4Runner Limited V8 is one of the nicest, smoothest, roomiest, comfortable, powerful, capable, total confidence-in 'all weather conditions' vehicles I've ever owned. However, if I were to regularly go trail driving off to remote camping sites in the woods, mountains, or riversides, I'd only take my Jeep. Here's my explanation: these two vehicles have a different basis to which they approach things. The Jeep Wrangler Sahara is an excellent off-road vehicle that has additions to make it a better daily-driver. The 4Runner Limited is an amazing daily-driver with additions to make it a bit 'better than good' off-road vehicle. So that's my off-roading opinions…here's what I've found about each as a daily-driver: First, (as you know) tires make a huge difference in satisfaction due to their noise, highway speeds, and wet / snow conditions characteristics - all major factors of a daily-driver vehicle. My Jeep Wrangler Sahara came with Bridgestone Dueler A/T (replaced in January with identical tires) and my 4Runner tires are Yokohama Golander A/T G015 (replaced the original Bridgestone Dueler H/T). Driving in ALL weather conditions, BOTH vehicles are a.b.s.o.l.u.t.e.l.y exceptional! (Please note that was NOT the case with the 4Runner using the H/T tires - those were awful in winter / snowy driving). Noise level in both my Jeep and my 4Runner is EXCELLENT (the video above state the Rubicon was very noisy with wind noise and it would difficult to have a conversation - I think the difficulty comes from the Rubicon's tires, they are off-roading tires and duh? will make A LOT of noise on pavement). I've NEVER had difficulty carrying on a conversation in my Jeep - EVER - and that includes people in the back seat. As far as an 'over-all' quietness rating - I think the 4Runner would win…the thing to remember is that a lot of the interior of the Jeep is the metal of the Jeep - and the Jeep all comes apart. The 4Runner's NOT like that and with every close of a door (the sound is similar to a vault door shutting sound) it's more quiet inside - the Jeep door must be closed with purpose, meaning a casual push and the door won't shut…hahaha…it's a Jeep! Both vehicles have EXCELLENT driving visibility, in both window openings and large mirrors. However, the 4Runner has an amazing spoiler attached which is easily thought of as non-functional…but driving in downpour rainstorms that spoiler directs wind down the back of the rear window and almost eliminates all rain from hitting the window, turn on the rear wiper function and it's the most visible rear view in a rainstorm of ANY vehicle I've ever driven. (The spoiler is also designed to keep the exhaust fumes from coming back into the vehicle when the rear window is partially or fully rolled down.) Both vehicles have EXCELLENT performance. Please note, my Jeep is a 2012 model - the engine was redesigned for that year - and it really shows. When I'm merging onto a busy interstate - in either vehicle - and I 'floor it' for acceleration to merge, it is overwhelming the amount of acceleration both vehicles provide (please note my Jeep Wrangler Sahara is a 2-door, the 4-door's acceleration is less due to the additional body weight). So the daily-driving differences between the two vehicles are this: the 4Runner can fit 4 large men comfortably on a long 4-hour-trip to a concert in a major city with all their luggage. The rear seats are NOT jump seats but rather large full seats; a 6' 3" person could sit in the back seat comfortably. The V8 engine will NOT even strain under the additional weight of passengers and cargo. the Jeep can maneuver better in a parking lot and fit quickly into almost any space. The Jeep's short wheel-base and small turning radius make it FUN to drive! Speaking of FUN to drive, the Jeep wins here hands-down…every moment I drive my Jeep it 'feels' like and an 'adventure!' Seriously, whether driving to the grocery store or driving to the plant to work it 'feels' like an adventure - it's not an adventure, of course, but it 'feels' like one! It is truly amazing and I think ALL Jeep Wrangler owners can attest to this overwhelming and exciting feeling each time they drive. The 4Runner is fun to drive too but it's in an entirely different spectrum…for example, driving the Jeep is like meeting up with your guy and gal friends at a pub for some beers and darts and laughter - driving the 4Runner is more like sitting before a crackling fire with a glass of wine having a brilliant conversation with your wife while blizzard winds howl outside the windows. the 4Runner can tow more and can carry more cargo inside, plus the 4Runner has a roof rack for things like a kayak. In terms of reliability: In the 13 years of owning my 2006 4Runner I've only incurred preventive maintenance costs…and, as I mentioned before, I replaced the tires…no failures have occurred on any interior or exterior component or engine / drivetrain / suspension equipment. When I replaced the tires, I did also replace the tire pressure sensors. Can't say the same for the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sahara…I purchased the vehicle (6 years ago) in 2013 exactly 1 year and 1 day from the day it was originally leased…I saw it over the Internet, drove to the dealer and bought it…it had only been on the market that day (approx. 6 hours before I bought it). Since then, over the last 6 years, I've had it into the dealer for repairs 6+ times…the rear seat needed fixing on its hinges; the front air dam rear bolts broke and it was hanging down; twice - on two separate occasions - for a fuel sensing indicator causing the engine warning to light; on another occasion the cylinder 6 misfire code turned out to be a fix covered by a Jeep bulletin (regardless of warranty status) for an entire head-gasket replacement on the engine and any components (ex. spark plugs, engine oil, filters) replaced during the work; my heater/ac thermostat and fan went out and required replacement; one recall for the heated mirrors causing possible fire; one recall for passenger air bag sensor malfunction; and as of two weeks ago my driver's heated seat won't work anymore (but I've NOT got that fixed yet), and the driver's seat leather has pulled apart at the seam.

Best recommendation. Skip the fancy creature comforts next time. Electronics break. I bought my jeep as base model as they come & have built it to my liking. Makes a world of difference with reliability.

Toyotas pre-2000 were beasts. However build quality took a nosedive after that sadly. Just look up Toyota recalls for 2010 vehicles onwards.

I have had a 95 Tacoma, 2001 Tacoma and 97 4runner (all with the 3.4) and they were all great on and off road. Same goes for my 01 sequoia (even if it's a boat). I think the new diesel Wrangler may be my first brand new car though 🤔

I have owned 7 jeeps since 1977 still have 4 of them.i owned one Toyota pickup a 93 when it was 10 years old had to part it out.frame rusted into and broke in half which was pretty common for them.

4 Runner's independent front end with a skid plate pushes too much snow opposed to Wrangler's solid front end. That's the main difference I see in this comparison. Better snow tires would probably help the Toyota but it's still gonna be pushing a lot of snow.

No Names well the thing with other companies is they keep doing cheap things to their vehicles and making it look cool or good, like the ranger, ford off-road version says that you do all the shifting no matter what but in one of the videos I saw they were driving it and it got stuck in something the Tacoma and Colorado went straight through and the guy was shifting to see if he could get out, it shifted its self and got even more stuck, no one wants a vehicle that will shift itself when it gets stuck which will only make you more stuck

My '06 Wrangler Rubicon has been nothing short of amazing. The 4.0 is a tireless workhorse of a motor. A ton of fun to drop the top in the summer and everything is so easy to mod. The factory front and rear lockers ensure it never gets stuck in the Montana winters and has actually helped me get other people get unstuck. Far from having a plush interior but I'd put it up against any equally built Toyota when the going gets tough.

For starters, I have a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon that I actually drive off road. OMG, you get the two most bad-a$$ off road body-on-frame rigs and you compare them...on a snowy hill? And spend quite a bit of time talking about...the interior? To REALLY compare these vehicles you need to take them on steep rocky terrain. A-trac needs to be important. Lockers need to be important. Ground clearance needs to be important. Low-range transfer case crawling power needs to be important. *That's what they're built for!* Everything in this review could have been done by many other vehicles that would do poorly or outright fail in steep rocky terrain where these would shine. For example, full-size 4x4 pickup trucks that don't have the breakover or departure angles for the terrain that these do. While the information in this review is certainly valid, it really feels like you almost entirely missed the point of these vehicles and what sets them apart from all others. This review is like comparing two full-sized pickup trucks without actually towing or hauling anything (what they're built for) as part of the review.

Do you think a front locker is better than the crawl control. Crawl control is a neat feature but will it be equal to a front locker?? Having said that Inwish my Taco had at least a rear locker. It has Auto LSD BUT cannot use in 4 wheel drive

@@mikefoehr235 I don't have hardly any experience with the 4Runner, so can't say for certain. I was HOPING to learn more about that kind of comparison when I started watching this video, but was sorely disappointed. My instinct is that having a front locker (e.g. both front and rear lockers) is better in general, but it probably depends on the exact circumstances. I've seen cases where crawling is the best solution, so at least in some cases that may be the better answer. But gut feel is that having both lockers is generally best. I've certainly used mine to great advantage! For what I do, the unmatched articulation of a solid front axle is much better, and the Jeep clearly wins on that front, too.

4Runner all the way! I have driven my TRD trail ever since 2016! It is the most customizable and baller truck I have ever driven. I will never get another brand of off-roader. 4Runners are the most beautiful trucks that always have held through. They may not be the most powerful but you can still have a hell-of-a-time.

Can't go wrong with either of them. I ended up getting the JLUR because of it's ability to remove the doors/roof but in an ideal world, I'd have the 4Runner for the weekday commute and a JLUR for the weekends.

I prefer the older JKs to the new ones. I daily drove a 2010 JK 2 door soft top for 3yrs and put over 60k mi on it. I traveled with it too. You get used to the road noise with the soft top. Mine was simple with manual everything including transmission. Still my favorite daily I’ve ever had. The new ones are just too soft.

I would love a jeep but im so scared of repairs. Im not a car guy and the mechanics i know all work with Toyotas. so for that reason i feel more comfortable having a vehicle i know they're familiar fixing. Wish i had the money to buy a jeep and if anything happens i know i can afford to fix it 😩

Totally agree, my 2k13 Sahara is NOT fun on the highway for long periods of time. But, appart from that, amazing vehicle. BUT test it before buying for sure!

You gotta ask yourself a question when considering these vehicles. If you spend 90% of your time off road, and you have DEEP pockets... you buy the Jeep. If you spend most of your time on road and are frugal for repairs... you buy the 4Runner. Simple.

If you wanted to carve corners with a 4Runner, you should have tested an Off-Road Premium with KDSS. Almost identical capability to the TRD Pro with the added addition of an advanced suspension overlay that tackles body sway.

For straight off-road capability, the solid axle, swaybar disconnects, front locker, better approach/departure angles of the jeep will win hands down. I'm a 5th Gen (2017) 4Runner owner and I've built it beyond the capabilities of the TRD Pro and it still won't do what a rubicon will do - i would love to squeeze 35's into my wheel wells but I rub slightly with 33's. That said, I prefer longer off road trips where I need to spend several hours per day in the vehicle. I also need to bring more crap. The rubicon will go everywhere I go, but not as comfortably. As for the entertainment system... as long as I can listen to something, i don't really care. Oil pressures, voltages, etc... Its a toyota, i don't worry about them. These two are both very competent but for those in the off-roading community, they each have their place.

I went to Colorado for 2 weeks, last year. Of all of the off road type vehicles owned by Colorado natives, there were more Xterras than there were Jeeps, and WAY less Toyota 4Runners, even though the Xterra was discontinued several years ago. Drive what the natives drive because they know what works.

@@jaymoar3561 considering the fact that I have a ‘19 jl that I use as a workhorse, I’m satisfied 19 years ago jeeps were using the AMC engines which ran until the sun would die, so it isn’t that hard to find a good condition jeep that has had more than 300k miles put on it

Love the older jeeps and the Toyotas! Really comes down to the individual buyer imho. Some people could care less about it lasting 500,000 miles and some could care less about it having a solid front axle and short wheel base. Comes down to what you want to do with it. There's no doubt a jeep will out perform most vehicles in serious off road conditions and a TRD will hang off road and be a excellent daily driver as well! That all said it's sad the direction Jeep has gone over the last 20 years. I've had a Cj, Yj, Tj, GC and currently have a Xj they've all had their issues but mostly because I purchased them with high mileage with the intent of building them. They're all fun and Toyota has a badass off road stable as well. I'd take either really!

Let me start by saying that I'm a forester and drive off-road nearly everyday, so i may be looking at these two vehicles from a different perspective than most. I spent time driving both in January and went with a 2019 Rubicon, although i went in thinking i was going to buy the Toyota. I had put off buying a Wrangler multiple times because of the weak interiors and on-road driving performance. But the new JL's are a different animal than all the previous Jeeps. The interior is pretty good, far better than the 4R. The ride is still pretty stiff compared to a road car, but it's impossible to make a vehicle that can do what the Rubicon can and still corner like a Porsche. I think with the JL, Jeep improved both the off-road performance from the previous generation and made a massive performance to the interior. And the undeniable fact is, there isn't another mass produced vehicle that outperforms the Rubicon off road.

I actually own a Jeep and I have no issues on wind noises while everything is attached. We do everything with are jeep from rock crawling to mudding an commuting my down fall is the mpg.

I’ll take the 4Runner. I currently drive an 04 sport edition and it is such a fun car to drive. Plus 4runners are made in Japan where they make sure they constantly inspect the vehicle for upmost quality.

Great video! Very honest opinions. I think y'all nailed it. One important thing y'all didn't touch on was reliability. The 4runner is astronomically more reliable than the wrangler, which is why I would choose it over the wrangler. But other than that, great video. Completely agree with everything y'all said!

I think many saying they want the Toyota over the Jeep are forgetting they'll also need to buy a side by side for off road, door/roof/glass less 2 tracking fun days out in the trails. Also don't forget you may want to buy a convertible too for the sunny day cruising to the beach. Jeep owners get that included with the same SUV. It's basically a 3 for 1 deal!

CLP that's actually a myth . People die far less from side impacts they any other impact. Also the doors are not what protects you, it's the b-piller. There has been studies where with or without doors, it's not much of a difference when it comes to side impacts

@@woodworthd2 thats what the new safety system when you step on a break,mit overrides the gas input. The gas pedal was cause by the floor mats and not the pedal getting stuck themselves. This happens on the prius btw but they implemented the safety feature on all Toyotas/Lexus.

I've owned 7 Toyota's my entire life, driving each one past 200k miles with no more than a starter going out on all 7. My brother has a 600hp supra with an all original block/head 250k mile 2jz. Just traded my 220k mile 13' Rav4 for a 2019 4runner TRD Off-Road, I can't get enough of driving it and have put it in situations much worse than this video without leaving 4high. It's a beautiful machine and feels like a proper truck.
