The Reawakening of 4014 ... the words ''Remarkable", ''Awesome'', and ''Outstanding'' don't do it justice! It is without a doubt one of the most notable engineering feats in railroad history in my opinion. Ed Dickens was operating a certifiable monster that he and the Steam Crew made 4014 Awake. To them, I tip my hat off to and rise my bottle of IPA beer. Here Here from Baltimore, MD.

My wife and I had the privilege (honor) to see Big Boy scream by near Adams Wisconsin, with many other amazed folks who waited for quite a while. I've never seen anything like it.... Yes, perhaps just as stunning as a Saturn IV Rocket...... Truly amazing. And what a beautiful train that followed! Well done Union Pacific! I never thought I'd see the day! Gratifying to see thousands waiting along the tracks for this unforgettable experience!

My Grandma had a cousin who was a UPRR engineer for 50 years. The last engine he ran was a Big Boy, I'm told he really loved it.

When I was a kid, somewhere right around 10-ish, we were coming home from visiting my grandparents in Anaheim. We were on the highway adjacent to the railroad. I was counting cars when I noticed a plume of smoke ahead. I lost interest in the car count, and focused on the engine. We overtook it slowly. I was mesmerized. It was a big boy and it was doing it's duty. I could not take my eyes off the spectacle. Never was sheer power so magnetic and so beautiful. And then, it happened, the engineer, presiding over this grandeur, waved to me. I've never forgotten.

Simply the finest way of showing Ameriman pride in workmanship and love of Country: the Union Pacific Railroad with my friends the Union Pacific Steamcrew BUILDING AMERICA! And now that the Barnum & Bailey Circus with their Circus Train is no more, this is the "GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH!!!"
@cats01825 жыл бұрын
The circus was never the greatest show on earth. The circus train was never the greatest show on earth. It was a monument to the worst that humanity perpetrated on animals. The "Big Boy" was designed, with the UP Railroad, and built by the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady, NY. It is a testament to what this country was able to achieve. It is also a testament to what this country has ceded to foreign companies whose only connection to the US are final assembly plants established here to quiet opposition to foreign products. To me, the "UP Steam Team" is an astonishing part of a corporation whose business is moving goods for it's customers.

These are great clips, the weather is wonderful, and all of local America, wherever Big Boy graces the scene, is totally stoked! I am looking for a schedule to see if I can find out when it will be in given locations. My father grew up on a street that had a right of way at the end of the block. He tried to describe to us, his boys, what it was like hearing a steam locomotive approach, but I think you just have to BE THERE. Union Pacific, restoring the great locomotives, 844 and 4014, is a stroke of genius!

When will Bigboy pull its maximum load and go at it’s maximum speed?
@Romans--bo7br5 жыл бұрын
Cecil Vaughn.... Even back in the "heyday's" of the 4000 class, the UP Never ran the class over 60 mph... even though ALCO safety rated the running gear for 80 mph. It's peak draw-bar hp is developed at around 35 mph and cylinder power is developed at approximately 41 mph... although with some of the upgrading and changes (slight increase in bore dia.), that power curve may have been moved a little. As far as pulling it's maximum tonnage rating (depending on Where, and what the ruling gradient would be)... who knows, depends on whether or not UP wants to use it to ever pull revenue freight with it, or not.... most likely, Not... except for perhaps "publicity" purposes. One possibility of using it in revenue freight would be when this country gets "taken out" with an EMP, whether from the sun, or "man-made" (Russia, China, etc, etc).... Steam power would be all that the railroads would have to pull anything with.

14:00 That... is them manually applying lubricant for the moving parts of the drive shaft. All steam engines need lubricant so the train will run smoothly.
@Romans--bo7br5 жыл бұрын
CJ Harris..... FYI, there is NO "drive shaft" on a UP 4000 class.... nor pretty well Any steam locomotive... with the only ones being even remotely close to using a "drive shaft" would be the narrow gauge logging locomotives, such as the Shay, Climax & Heisler Types and several other "odd-ball" types in narrow gauge industrial use, in particular. The shafts on the steam locomotives mentioned are really referred to as "quill shafts" and Not "drive-shafts".

Help with breaking, electrical power, Water and Fuel conservation... there aren't as many places to water a steam loco these days... My only question is; why do they have a diesel in the line? The Big Boy, in it's time, was able to pull a train up to 5-miles long by itself. Or is it being used for the electrical needs or emergency in case something went wrong? I'm just not sure the purpose of a diesel with steam. Kinda takes away from the real raw power of the steam locomotive. Typically they were 2 to 3+ times more powerful than ANY diesel locomotive in their day. Just curious.

@West_Cascade_Rail5 жыл бұрын
For the dynamic breaks. According to Wikipedia, "Dynamic braking is the use of an electric traction motor as a generator when slowing a vehicle such as an electric or diesel-electric locomotive". So they need electricity to power the breaks, which the diesel engine generates.
@derail145 жыл бұрын
i hate these vids because they always have a diesel in the consist, that steam loco can handle these pss type trains very easy, those diesels are just extra weight and they do not them to get electric power to the cars as a baggage car with a generator would handle that.
@cruelty63685 жыл бұрын
Like when Union Pacific brought a steam engine to Tucson about seven years ago, the Big Boy, at least in this video, is not generally moving under its own power. They stoke up the steam and blow the whistle, but the steam power is not pushing through the cylinders. You can tell from the sound.

Why is there a diesel engine on the train?
@ebjolley97685 жыл бұрын
When running on the main line a modern diesel locomotive is used primarily for a source of dynamic braking and power. The steam locomotives need water and fuel oil which is not always readily available along the route. Generally the diesel unit provides the power when no one is looking to save on water and fuel. You can tell if the steam is being used for power by watching the pistons. If steam is escaping the pistons on each stroke then steam is the power. For example at 17:55 the train is moving but very little steam is being used. As the diesel comes by you can hear the engine power up.
