Thank you. My grandfather ran these locomotives from Ogden to Evanston to Green River. When my mother saw the video, she had this to say-WOW!!!! That reminded me of my memorable childhood. Our family drove A LOT of times from Ogden to Evanston to visit my aunt and uncle who lived there. We spend even more time in Echo! When the trains didn’t stop at Echo they just barreled through. I could feel the house vibrate and the windows rattled. Dad, and me too, LOVED to watch the trains! This memorial train is truly the essence of my childhood because I live in the era of both the steam and the Diesel engine. THANKS FOR THE TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE!!!

Awhile back, I was standing in front of a Big Boy at Fair Park { Dallas Tx } I tried to imagine it fired up. As I looked at it, it was almost saying, if you could see what we used to do you'd be happy. Now we get to see, now we are happy. Just look at how many people are standing trackside just to get a glimpse. We have been told for decades that the only Big Boys we would see running were in magazines or old films. This is prayers answered...…….!

Really, more than anything, this is the ultimate tribute to the brilliant engineers who designed this locomotive, and the many thousands of skilled machinists, steamfitters, boilermakers and other technicians who built, maintained and operated these. Today's mechanical engineers could probably learn a thing or two looking at how this was designed, in the same way that most new electrical engineers could stand to look at a vacuum tube now and then.

I live in Bellevue Nebraska a suburb of Omaha which is the home of UP. I got a chance to see 844 up close about 15 yards away running to a Civil War commemoration. The fact that something that big can run with such precision is unbelievable . The ground really shakes when it goes past. I normally hear trains run by my house about a mile away and can tell you what crossing it is at. I could hear 844’s whistle about 10 miles away as it is like a prehistoric beast bellowing. It will be here twice in Omaha as it makes its trip. I urge you to go out and see it because it is an awe inspiring experience. I am ready for Big Boy. Kudos to the restoration crew because without them this wouldn’t exist and for UP coming up with the money to make this happen. I haven’t seen a person yet who wasn’t inspired by these awesome pieces of machinery.

The Union Pacific RR deserves a huge THANK YOU. Years of looking for the 'right' locomotive that would take a rebuild. Having to build a new facility for the rehab-rebuild is expensive. Many parts are no longer available so they have to be made in their shops. ETC, ETC, ETC. There is no direct financial payback. But the GOODWILL is more than can be counted on any financial ledger. Paul Bislin which types of locomotives went across the pond? Were they regauged?
@paulbislin84715 жыл бұрын
Noah Garay The USATC introduce a steam engine program for the use in and after WW 2. There were the USATC S100 class, a little 0-6-0T tank engine. Then the class S160, a 2-8-0, they served in Europe and later around the world and in the US they were used by the US Army and the Alaska RR. The S160 once was designed mostly for the use in Germany, cause the US Army expected that after all those air raids on the German Railroad not much would be left operational and that it would last a long time until Germany would have had enough engines in operation again. But finally they were surprised how fast the German RR got on tracks again, so the S160 lastet only for few years in Germany, but were used for many years in Italy, France and the UK. And then there was the S200 class, a 2-8-2, they were intended to be used in the middle-east, but some also came to Italy. While all of the USATC classes were designed to serve in all countries in Europe including the UK with its smaller profile, the US and Canada also built a class of 2-8-2 during and after the war for France, this class was based on the USRA design, in fact they were a light versions of the USRA light Mikado built to french requirements, they were the SNCF 141R class. All of them didn‘t have to be regauged, cause the gauge in the US and most of the European countries are the same, 1435mm.

Have you noticed that, in the video of UP 3985 pulling 143 double-stack freight cars up Sherman Hill, you don't see a diesel assisting the old boy? At the same time, almost every time a UP steam locomotive pulls a passenger train, it has a diesel helper. I don't think it's a matter of grandpa needing help to get up the hill. Rather, the old steamers simply don't have the electrical capacity needed to power that many passenger cars. Most of the UP heritage cars were built in the 1950's. By that time, railroad passenger cars were becoming power hogs [with all the "modern" conveniences]. Even UP 844, which was built in 1944 to pull passenger trains, can't generate enough electricity to power these more "modern" passenger cars. UP 3985 and UP 4014 certainly were never intended to pull passenger cars, even when they were new. I suspect these perfectly rebuilt and maintained locomotives don't need help to pull any train, up any hill. All they need is a little help generating the power required by us luxury-loving passengers as we enjoy our hot showers, hair dryers, and chilled margaritas in the club car! If you don't believe me, listen to the SD70 as the train goes uphill. It purrs along, barely above an idle. The steamers are pulling the train. All the SD70 is doing is generating electricity.
@fermitthekrog63185 жыл бұрын
@@chrisackerley1842 actually the SD70 here is not equipped with head end power because it is a freight locomotive. The electricity for the train is being supplied by a generator in one of the cars. The reason the diesel is there is for dynamic breaking.

@@fermitthekrog6318 - I hadn't thought of that. You may be right. I thought the generator car supplied power for the kitchen and club cars, only, but I might be wrong. @royreynolds1085 жыл бұрын
@@chrisackerley1842 If you look carefully at the car consist there are two power cars; one between the tool/machine shop baggage cars and the one with the large louvered panel on the right side for the train.
