steam engines will live forever. they are the kings of the tracks. they may die but they return to life eventually. some may be in trouble from the big sleep and need restoration but steamers are too loved. they are high maintenance but are worth it. these are not only history, they are a beautiful work of art! seeing a real steam locomotive in action is majestic

That service whistle sounds good on the 4014, though I definitely don’t like that dual beam headlight. The single beam looks much better, with the dual beam looking very outta place to me. Also, I’m kinda surprised they didn’t opt for a slightly longer consist given the size of excursions that’ve been run over that line in the past. Ah well. Something’s better then nothing, so I’m not gonna complain. The Heritage Crew got their reasons, of that I’m very sure. As usual, very high quality video Fan Railer. A job well done, as to be expected from ye really.

At 47:07, is Ed asking the 4015 engineer to use dynamics to put a load on the 4014?
@FanRailer Жыл бұрын
The stretch of track between Denver and Greeley is a gentle downgrade in the northward direction. They use the dynamic brake on the diesel to maintain speed without having to make adjustments to the controls of the 4014. This streamlines operations on the steam side of things. Otherwise, once the desired speed was reached, they would have to shut the throttle off then crack it again to drift, which would require the fireman to make adjustments to the firing controls and injector settings to compensate. Easier to use dynamic braking to give the 4014 an artificial load and work her a bit down the grade. Then this doesn’t even take into consideration the need to slow down for the 25 mph speed restrictions through certain towns along the right of way.

What was happening at 9:30 ish? It looks like the back drivers do a pretty good slip then there was a puff of fire where the heart of the engine is. Do the back drivers start moving first before the front ones? Can they power each set individually? I was hoping someone else commented on this before me and so far, no one has. Great video and your knowledge is spot on. Thank you

Oh man, she's begging for real tonnage! 4014 is laughing at this train. Comon Ed you know you want to pull 11000 tons.
@FanRailer Жыл бұрын
Actually, given the running speeds of 40-45 mph and the ruling grade of ~1.0%, this is a decent sized consist. Performance charts for the 4000s indicate that in order to achieve the aforementioned speeds on the aforementioned grade, they should be assigned no more than 1,300 to 1,600 tons. The consist seen here totals out to around 1,200 tons or so (400 tons of water cars, 200 tons of diesel, and about 600 tons of coaches).
@bov634 Жыл бұрын
@Fan Railer I think you need to do more research.
@FanRailer Жыл бұрын
I think I've done plenty of research; I know the tonnage ratings for specific speeds and grades. For instance, I know that on a 1% grade, a 4000 class locomotive is rated for 1,600 tons up to 40 mph, OR 4,400 tons up to 15 mph. I doubt you can say the same.

It hasn’t gone to Washington. From what I’ve heard, that trip’s either been postponed or outright canceled due to “traffic issues” on UP’s lines up that way. So this run was made from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Denver, Colorado and back over three days to make up for it, so to speak.

I want to commend your efforts in producing this video. For being patient, using a tripod or excellent steady cam and only panning very tastefully. Not zooming is a good also while the scene takea place. Sound quality is good but would be better if less compression and limiting were used. You need to get a driver when you are doing chasing segments.
@FanRailer2 жыл бұрын
Lot of assumptions here. As stated in the description, I'm only using my phone for most of these shots, and there is no tripod involved. Sound compression is not a controllable feature on the phone I'm using, so that is out of my hands. If there were a driver available, I would have used one, but I am quite comfortable pacing on my own without one if need be.

Question: when that engine pulls into a passenger terminal, and people are standing 4 ft away from the driving wheels, doesn't the steam spewing out of that thing turn into a dangerous situation for the observers? Although I happen to prefer the cleaner lines of Challenger 3985, the whistle of either of those engines is simply awesome.
@FFred-us9tw2 жыл бұрын
The steam you see billowing out is not under pressure. It’s not even hot enough to burn you if you walk through a cloud of it. Steam cools rapidly when vented. And in colder weather much of the large plumes of what appear to be steam are just water vapor. Being burned by steam as a train passes you at a station is not an issue. The cylinder test cocks are closed and other than a high pressure leak, their is no issue.

Unfortunate that this whistle didn’t stay with 4014. I guess most people liked the main whistle better or this was simply a one off switch.
