I have owned 3 new cars and all three were sold around the 200k mile mark (Acura and Hyundais). All three were great and never left me stranded or had me spend hardly anything in repairs. I have never owned a VW or Subaru but from what I have heard from friends Subarus are better then average in quality/ownership issues while VWs are poor in those areas. Having a dependable vehicle is something I expect these days especially at these price points. Please bring up factory warranties when discussing price. Keep up the great work.

Having owned my 2017 WRX since spring of 2017, this is my opinion: I think this would be a really hard choice if you lived somewhere that gets little to no snow. The WRX is not perfect. While I have no complaints about the rev hang (it's probably there, just doesn't bother me), there are a couple things that I can nitpick about. The stock tune has a weird torque dip just before 5000 RPM before it picks up again, so it's a bit of a hiccup while trying to rev through the whole power band. As per typical Subaru interior, there are squeaks and rattles, especially in the winter (the likely culprit is vibration from the mounting clips). The throttle response is non-linear, making it a little difficult to smoothly accelerate without suddenly launching forward (basically, it's easy to drive either very gently or very aggressively, but difficult to smoothly drive somewhere in between that). I've also found that you have to be really smooth with releasing the clutch, as it tends to want to suddenly grab and make the car lurch. Having said all that, I live in Alberta, where there's snow/ice on the ground about 5-6 months of the year. Having AWD + winter tires is just magical, there's no other word for it. And at the end of the day, the WRX still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. It's a pretty quick car, has a nice rumble at idle but won't piss off the neighbours, and is pretty comfortable as a daily driver. The Harmon Kardon stereo option is also quite pleasant-sounding. In a non-winter situation, I think it would come down to either wanting the better interior of the GTI, or the more racy exciting characteristics of the Veloster. But there's no comparision to the WRX's powertrain advantage in the slippery stuff. Hope this helps someone who's on the fence.

@englematic5 жыл бұрын
@@daphenom45 I went from a stock FOST to a stock WRX. The power delivery was identical in my opinion, but the ride in the WRX was so much nicer and well sorted. The ST just a harsh ride. and I had the typical big guy problems (6ft, 230lbs) of the seats in the ST having too much bolstering, while the seats in the WRX are just right. I readily admit the stock tune is hot garbage tho. My first purchase after break in was an access port and an E-Tune for it to get rid of the rev hang and the 4.5K rpm power wall. I do miss the really nice mechanical feeling shifter that was in the ST, but there's some things I can do with the WRX's shifter to make it better. And of course there's the AWD. I took the WRX to the Tail of the Dragon back in october, and it was a joy to drive down on those twisty roads, just diving into corners. And now in Pennsylvania during the winter, with good snow tires fitted the AWD hasn't let me down yet in the snow. (not that the focus ever did either, but the AWD will just pull right through scenarios where the Focus would be spinning tires a bit).

I thought I'd leave a comment and say thanks for all the wonderful WRX reviews over the years. I was finally at a point of looking for a new vehicle, and it's videos like this that, with COVID, helped me decide that I was going for the WRX over the Veloster. I wanted the extra space for my dog which might get squishy in the Veloster, and as someone who cottages in northern Ontario and commutes to work in winter (Not this year lol) the AWD in the WRX just made sense. Like you've said in other videos, the WRX is best in a low trim so I went for the lowest trim that offered a sunroof. You mentioned the stock shifter feeling a little long so I went factory short shifter and it's notchy and is a treat to drive. Only other upgrade I might look into is the OEM sport exhaust for a little more sound since you know, equal length headers. Videos like this and The Straight Pipes helped keep me sane while waiting for the car to arrive, and now I've got a nice WRX in my driveway!

@TheFlashinPulsar5 жыл бұрын
I recently tested all these cars and bought a wrx. The GTI and veloster feel faster because you feel the torque more from the fwd. The subbie has less torque feel, and it makes the car insane. You suddenly realize you are hauling ass with out being thrown back as hard. When the gti or veloster tires would spin the wrx just pulls more. GTI is the most planted on the road, the ride stability is unmatched and it still feels insane because of the torque steer. The GTI and Hyundai both have great warranties, subbie warranty is okay. wrx keeps its value the most out of all of them. They really are all their own unique drives. I already had a mk6 gti and while it looks more sensible wrx is more practical because of storage and room. Here is the real big difference. WRX Turbo kicks in way sooner than the GTI. They can both be spooled pretty quickly but the GTI turbo is made to kick in at 3k so you can keep revs lower for city driving. When it does kick in it just rips hard all the way to about 6k rpm. wrx turbo kicks in at 2.3 and hits a big peak at 2.8 dips a little after that, dips more at like 3.5k picks back up at 4k and then hits a slightly higher peak pulling hard to redline. This is similar to the FA20 in the BRZ too, just more HP and torque. Unlike the BRZ it can be taken out with a stage 1 access port tune. If you take a gti to redline it feels like it is going to break, the subbie feels like it wants less restriction. the veloster is pretty similar to the gti. The sudden onset of the turbo seems to be more gradual and maybe slightly sooner in the veloster. GTI manual gear box is very easy and comfortable to drive, but responsive. You should get the auto instead though it is faster and actually is a lot of fun. The WRX clutch is heavy, but smooth. The clutch point has been moving slightly on me as it breaks in and wants a little higher rpm to get going than the gti, probably because of the increased inertia of the drive train. The clutch can kick in hard if you dump it and still be fairly smooth while you do it. It goes when you dump the clutch with out jerking. It also feels like it is engaging more quickly(?) it is different and feels more sporty. When you dump the clutch in the gti it is harsh. When you don't dump the clutch the GTI clutching is almost so refined and smooth that it is bland. There is a thin line between quick response when letting out of the clutch and dumping to quickly causing the car to lurch. Even with launch control on my mk6 it as difficult to launch properly. The DSG auto can be more responsive and introduce less delay in continuing the speed. GTI is the clear winner on interior. The WRX is so inconsistent. The dash and door handles are great, all the rubber around the windows is great. The fake leather wheel is meh, the seats are meh, the carpeting is meh to low quality for the price. The center console is okay. The GTI just has a great interior. Veloster has the best onboard computer/infotainment centers. WRX has the 2nd best, the digital gauge above the infotainment center is great. GTI is great improvement in technology over the mk6, which had basically nothing for a modern car. It is still lack luster. Except the WRX lacks blind spot notification in the side mirrors and the blinkers on the side mirrors. WRX has the best mirrors and vision over all. GTI has massive and dangerous side mirror blind spots. Veloster has better side mirrors but a worse rear view picture. GTI + seamless rearview > WRX seamless rearview, but it doesn't overcome the gtis blind spots. The GTI seamless rearview is almost entirely seamless. It looks great and provides so much more vision over the base rearview. The reason I didn't get a gti was that the car is so incredibly refined that it feels bland. It feels so well planted on the road. The steering has feed back but not a lot of resistance. The clutch feels like it doesn't exist most of the time. The wrx is the opposite in a lot of ways. It feels wild every time you drive. The clutch has so much spring back you can cut your shin open if you dump it and get your shin in the way, but the responses it gives are so pronounced. The steering is resistive and provides substantially more road feel. You can feel the texture of the pavement and its imperfections through the wrx steering. And goddamn is it fast. In 6th gear, stock, it is as responsive as 4th in the gti mk6 stage 1.
@TheFlashinPulsar5 жыл бұрын
@XdC the mk6 had terrible blind spots on the left and right. I put on curved mirrors for mine and it reduced it, but they were still bad. The wrx has an okay blind spot I think I'll completely remove the blind spot with curved mirrors. The A pillar blindspot on the wrx is actually worse than the gti though. Not sure about the veloster I only test drove it. Mk7.5 gti had less blind spot than the mk6. But mk6 w/ curved mirrors was better than the mk7.5 oem mirror. The mk7. 5 comes standard with blindspot monitoring though. Wrx has the wire in the door but you have to buy the mirror for it. Subispeed has a curved wrx mirror w/ blindspot monitoring.

I'm also 6'5" and it looks like the Veloster might be a bit tight. You must really need to sit in the Rabbit to appreciate the quality of it, because it really didn't look any better than the other two. In fact, from a no nonsense perspective, I think I prefer the Hyundai. From the outside, the Veloster wins hands down.Definitely the best looking and most sporty of the three. My experience as well. I test-drove a GTI and a WRX and I went for the WRX, easily. Yes the GTI was nice, but there's just something about the WRX. The big downsides to me are the rev hang and the road noise. The first is going to be fixed by a tune, the latter I've just gotten used to. Oh and of course there was the bonus experience when we got a big dump of snow recently. While people were trying to dig their cars out to get out of their parking spots, I blasted out of there in five seconds, then drove by RWD cars spinning their wheels in barely any snow. Yes the car was tested there, and it may have a little bit to do with the "N" badge but it was specifically named "N" for where the car was designed. I'm not sure Koreans would rock the "N" badge to represent Germany over a Korean named city where the car was engineered.

It would depend on how long you're going to keep it though. The Veloster N has a low entry price and a fantastic warranty, but that doesn't transfer the full 10 years to the second owner. As you can see from the astronomic lease rates for the Veloster N, smart people betting their own money are guessing that it will lose over half of its value over 5 years, which puts it at one of the highest depreciating vehicles on the market. And since true cost of ownership is purchase price minus resale value divided by months, you end up with a REALLY expensive vehicle compared to the Subaru with its much better resale value or the VW with its so-so resale. But if you plan to actually keep the vehicle an entire decade, which almost nobody does, then the Veloster N is a no-brainer.

It really depends on what you’re looking for in a car. WRX is a great platform for modding vs the other two, with a big aftermarket scene. Not a big fan of VW, leased a 2012 and had one electric issue after another. Got to a point where even VW didn’t know the solve. Never tried the N but always found the Veloster interesting. While the....plainest of them all, the WRX is a good all around car with plenty of modding potential and a engine begging for some DIY love. AWD is a big plus not only with snow but also with how far you can push the power, with FWD after a bit you will start hitting wheel spin and eating tires . Just my 5 cents, it’s very cheap and easy to bring WRX power levels to that of the STI.

The mk7 GTI is the best 4 cylinder ever made in my opinion in terms of style, comfort, options and performance. Let’s face it, you can get any of these cars with 10,000 miles super cheap, I did. Just picked up a 2017 MK7 GTI Autobahn 5 months ago. Absolutely amazing. Put an Apr stage 2 on it, you go from 210HP to in the range of 320hp with just a simple tune and exhaust. The DSG gearbox in this car is so superb that it puts down the power so well - to the point that a stage 2 GTI WILL pull on most v8’s. You then put a golf R turbo on it ~ $1200 turbo and you will leave nearly every car in the dust. I picked my GTI up for only $21,000 out the door. It has everything you can imagine. Insurance is cheap, gas mileage is amazing, and if you didn’t already understand, yeah it’s a quick car. One person I absolutely applaud for accomplishing putting the GTI’s potential out to market is Tyler Aul - owner of a 10 second GTI. The Hyundai is a great option out there for true Hyundai fanatics, but let’s face it, it looks way too similar to a Ford Focus. The interior of the Veloster is a total copy of the GTI besides the touch screen. The dash looks the same, the gauge cluster, the different suspension, steering, and throttle response.... it’s a focus mixed with a GTI. And what’s up with only 3 doors?!?! The wrx to me is just bland, but maybe because I like hatchbacks. Again, this car is the best in its class. Period.

I know this is 'old', but it helped give me perspective when looking for a replacement for my 04 GTI. It gave me things to look for/at during test drives. I originally was (dead) set on a BRZ on driving feel/purpose/intent alone (like a 4-wheel motorcycle), but real world life/practicality won in the end and I chose the [US spec] WRX-base as my new daily to replace the 15yo GTI. If you're wondering why I didn't choose a new GTI, well, as mentioned in this video, it is 'softer' than what I was looking for. Plus after 15 years with 1 GTI, I thought it was time for a change. The Veloster-N is closer to the brz in terms of raw feeling, and it brought me to giggles during the test drive, but when I wrapped my head around the car as a whole, I couldn't see myself in one. So, the WRX wins, but not by much. I'll make due w/the rev hang for now, but I see a tuner/accessport in my near future. GTI without a doubt, being older the Veloster is a bit too "boy racer" for me, I have a 2016 GTI manual, 2019 GLI 35 Edition, manual and a 1993 325is with modified suspension. It's the most fun to drive but the Volkswagens are easy to live with, looking forward to the Mk 8.

Love my 16 wrx, admittedly stock it has a few issues that you really want to mod out: 1 is the shifter slop, fixed for about $100 dollars with a short throw shifter plate, and perrin brass bushing. 2 is rev hang its a part of the engine tune which i see as the main issue from the factory, having looked at the way the CAT constricts and bends for no reason, it become really obvious that subaru undertuned the wrx to keep it out of the STI power range. The rev hang and the power dip at 4k rpm both disappear with just the cobb AP OTS tune for stock vehicle. And an aftermarket jpipe with carb compliant CAT and tune will drop you off around 270-280whp

I had a new 2016 GTI, Midnight Blue with Clark Plaid interior. Great fun car. But, since I needed to go back to being more sensible, I traded in for a 2019 Jetta SEL Premium. I had no complaints about the GTI. As for the Jetta … No complaints either. Less power to be sure but better ride and the gas mileage is very good. Around town I can get over 400 miles from a tank. Open road, I got 550 miles before tanking up. I made the dealer go out of state to get the Jetta I wanted. SAGE GREEN METALLIC with two tone interior. Still, I do miss my GTI. And my youth … sometimes.

Veloster N because I have the first version of the car and the gimmick of the third door isn't a gimmick when you have two dogs and grocery shop. My dogs give the Veloster two tails up... and with 85K hassle-free miles on my current car, this is a no brainer upgrade. Great review gents.

GTI for me, The interior is what's really important, that's what you see everyday, exterior is for others to see :) And honestly. I prefer no pop, on the exhaust it gets you headache after a while

What good is the interior on a brick? The GTI's are so unreliable that VW wont warranty them past 60,000 miles.

Good review, you are the only one who mentioned about Subaru's setting position, they are too high, it dose not feel sporty at all. I owned four Subarus and they all seat too high. There is too much head room.
@Michel-Graillier-fanclub4 жыл бұрын
I'm 6'4 head room in the Subaru is great, not too much. Extra height is good for a helmet or sunroof loss. The seat sits too high though.

I switch from a 2009 GTI to a 2015 WRX and from it to a 2018 WRX STI. Out of this three, I'll pick the Veloster N. I was pleased to switch from the GTI to the WRX, but once I went to a Boxerfest and just waiting to enter I felt that I was driving a Camry, I knew that Subaru gave up too much in the transition to the 2015 generation. The STI is the most rewarding car I've driven to this day, at least, personally owned, I see myself for years looking to buy rumbling STIs. If there weren't any, Veloster N with the performance package would be my next choice when fun to drive would be the goal of driving. When dring the STIs you feel that some 911s that you cross with manual transmissions might be more rewarding and desirable but in these segments... The STI that you could buy for the price that you would pay for any of these should be your goal when fun driving, rewarding sensations were important. For numbers on a track get a Type R, for a city car, thinking that the ride has to be soft and so on, the best choice is the Prius if you want more feeling while driving a Honda Fit Sport manual transmission. If you are going to buy a car that costs what today costs the GTI, get a fun car, That's why just considering this three the Veloster N. If in my garage I have a Speedster, a Stelvio ( I wouldn't spend more on an SUV), even if I can afford a Speedster, an STI and a Miata and I don't have a Prius, then I'll get the VW, like you guys said. To me, Subaru pressed the wrong button when they decided to wash the character of the car with the new engine in 2015. The interior improved though. Final thing. To anybody considering buying the WRX, drive the STI as well before closing the deal. By the base model, whatever you can. In terms of the feelings that the car returns, there is a world of difference.

A GTI is like Mario on Mario Kart. He's pretty good at everything, and he's iconic. But he'll probably get gapped by Yoshi.

The mk7 GTI engine has been overly subdued, but with a $700 stage 1 flash all the electronic limiting is gone and you in affect get a FWD Golf R for $15k less. With all the superior design the VW comes with, a simple software mod makes it no contest--the mk7 blows any other car at the price-point right out of the water.
@doncornetto5 жыл бұрын
There surely have to be some mechanical changes to the R that justify the increase in HP, if you do that to a GTI you might just fuck something up big time.

if i had long winters and bad weather its WRX all day long. i had a neighbor that went offroading in his little 80s Subaru whenever we got snow. the car was like a tank! GTIs are cheap to mod so that is my pick and getting a 2017 in the spring with low miles.
