Look, some of you have laughed at Hyundai for a long time. Meanwhile, as an "old head", I have been doing my research. Since the beginning of this century, Hyundai has been slowly and quietly working it's way into the lineup with top-name car companies. They have their own foundry, and they also spent almost 200 million on metallurgy. I first bought a brand new top-of-the-line Sonata back in 2006. It had the 3.3 liter V6 that was pushing 237hp. It even had a sport-shift feature, but it would only make the shifts near redline. It could and would beat a base 525 BMW that had 227 hp. The ex traded it in with almost 140,000 miles, and it still ran like brand new. I currently have a Accent GLS as my daily driver. That one is about to turn 200,00 miles. It doesn't burn oil and it runs like a top. Due to the mileage, it was time to renew suspension, timing belt, and ignition parts. Now it's read for another 100,000 miles. I am currently at adding another high-performance compact to the garage, and all three of these cars are on the list. The bang for the buck is the N. Plus, if I want to void my warranty, I can do a few minor upgrades with the money saved, and beat BOTH the other cars. Don't sleep on Hyundai.

The Hyundai is cheaper and has a manual handbrake. That alone makes me interested. But the type r is supposedly more comfortable. That electronic brake makes me skittish even though I drive a regular civic right now.

Maybe Hyundai's sports cars are good but every single person I know who got a Hyundai as there first cars because they are dirt cheap all suffered greatly, the accent after only 90 000 had issue going up a normal uphill road barely making it ar 70km/h. Back suspensions just broke on all 3 of them one was my sister's, an other my cousins and last one was one my friends accent. There cheap, bad reputation is deserved just as much as any other car company because all of them have there faults.

Golf R suffers from a lack of an LSD. those 2 other cars have them. Even the GTI has one. One reason why I went with a Canadian Performance edition Mk7 GTI with a tune. Nice video. Here’s my take: The Type R is absolutely ridiculous, it’s not even fair on the track, but the styling is out of control haha. I’m jealous that the United States won’t get the i30N, I know the Veloster N is essentially the same thing, but the Veloster isn’t anywhere near as practical as the i30... The interior of the Hyundai is definitely lacking, but again, it’s the price point, they put the money into the performance, not the luxury. Then the Golf R, the most sophisticated, laid back hot hatch there is. I personally like the way the Golf looks, but the track performance isn’t top tier anymore, same with the GTI at that. However, what it lacks in pure track shredding, it makes up for in the most comfortable cabin and the most presentable exterior you’re going to find in this segment. It’s the only car you can show up to your girlfriends parents house in, yet still be able to walk most vehicles on the road with. Depending on what your goals are, these cars will serve them perfectly without breaking the bank too much. If you want the best bang for your buck with performance, get the N line, if you want a track ripper that will burn anything in its path, get the Type R, if you want to be a grown up with some speed, get the Golf. All that said, can we get an F in the chat for the Focus RS (and ST)? Lol

Not only was I blown away by the entire experience of driving all out on a proper race track, but the Type-R was SO much faster than I expected! Hondas aren't really my thing, so I was out of touch with what the car might be able to do, but it was literally the most fun thing I've ever done in my life. Note: I went there to rent a Renault Megane, being in my price range and one of the few manual gearboxes. Track day came and they said it wasn't available so they upgraded me for free to the Civic. I have no doubt the Type-R is brilliant on track but they come from the factory with much stickier tires than the other 2. I would love to see all three on a control tire to see if and how that changes the results - if the Golf can make better use of its AWD, if the Honda still takes it with its focused suspension and lighter weight and if the Veloster can take (even) better advantage of its further weight advantage.
@sparkystone27435 жыл бұрын
This is the perfect idea! It would actually let the cars shine on an even playing field for what they are. But the stock tires on a golf R are complete trash. Not sure what comes on the Hyundai but it probably isn't what the Civic is working with.
@mayuquitomayu47435 жыл бұрын
VW is to blame. Why they pick the craziest tires for all their cars is beyond reason. My R32 came with some Dunlop AS that were sheer trash. Terrible performance and bubbles from every possible contact with any curb. The type R is the best car as this is how Honda intended it to be outfitted.
@6spdkeg5 жыл бұрын
most channels and magazines get these test all wrong because they try to hold up the std of "from the factory" all the damn time. These are most of the time press cars and many people get to flog them. All VW and other companies need to do is offer a package with good 180-200 TW tires. But yeah. add some tires and a track alignment to the Golf R and it should not be loosing by much to the Type R.

Type R comes on ContiSportContact 6 which is a road tyre equivalent to the Pirelli P Zero on the Veloster. :) The Golf R would come with the ContiSportContact 5P which is the same SportContact series but an older model, or sometimes the Potenza S001 (VW have a tyre 'lottery' system, where you don't get a specific tyre, but instead a random brand depending on production cycles).

An engine tune is not going to make the Golf R handle better! You need to rework the swaybars, the dampers, the springs, wider wheels, the R doesn't have the aero (the splitter & rear wing) which the GTI Clubsport has, you need the Recaros from the GTI Clubsport too -- it's a lot more than a retune needed to bring the Golf R up to spec.
