It's based on the old Skoda Superb, so yeah. VW stopped being a serious player in the U.S. back in the 90's.

@@shueibdahir Our Passat was solidly built, handled fairly well (if a bit softly sprung) and was the most reliable car VW sold (from 2011-2022) in North America, but it was always a few model years behind in getting VW's latest tech and safety features, and also never moved to the MQB platform that existed throughout it's run here. It was a good car, just not competitive with the Japanese, Korean or in some ways even American (Ford Fusion/Mondeo) competition that updated their cars more extensively. We finally got the Euro Passat here in 2017, but it was in the form of the much more expensive Arteon. Not sure people looking for a mid-sized family sedan considered something that started around $40k for a base model.
