Thank you! Yes, definitely take it in and make sure it can be replicated while you have it in. Usually it’s a piece that can be tightened or foam put inside the pillar or something. If it doesn’t do that when they have it, monitor it each time and document it. Good luck! 👍

If one has never owned a GTI it may be difficult to understand its unique appeal. After all, though the GTI more or less invented the entire "hot hatch" category, in stock form it's not the quickest hot hatch out there. And one pays a premium compared to the new Hyundai Veloster N (at least in terms of MSRP. More about that below.) I owned the last of the MK6 GTI's (2012) built in Germany. I'd put nearly a hundred thousand miles on it last spring, about 30K miles with an APR Stage I+ tune.. Nothing had ever gone wrong with my MK6 but I have a teenage daughter who'll be driving shortly and will share the vehicle. So I wanted a car that had all the bells and whistles in terms of safety and convenience that my 2012 GTI lacked. I wasn't so attached to a GTI that I didn't look at anything else but after considering the new Accord 2.0L turbo, the Camry V6, the Mazda 6, the Mustang 2.3L turbo4, and the Mazda MX-5 (among others) I settled on a 2018 Autobahn/DSG GTI. Just couldn't give up the unique aspects of the GTI. Here are some thoughts. () What's new in 2019. For the most part VW hasn't added features to the GTI in 2019. Instead, they've made features that were available at the top trim Autobahn in 2018 available in lower trim levels (e.g. Golf R brakes, electronic LSD). The engine's power numbers are up slightly but I have a feeling that's more a marketing than an engineering change. They've also added a seventh gear to the DSG, presumably to improve fuel economy. Personally I don't find the transmission "upgrade" to be an improvement and some other reviewers have had the same reaction. Nevertheless, it bears mentioning. () Size and versatility. At 168" long the GTI in nearly a foot shorter than the Civic Type R. (That makes it eligible for a discount on Washington State Ferries, a feature that few others will find important but it matters to me.) Yet it offers significantly more overall passenger and cargo space. It's the same length as the Veloster N but again offers more overall passenger and cargo space. Some may find its styling "dated" and "conservative." I find it brilliant and classic. And for someone who doesn't want to drive something that looks like it was designed by a 14 year old, it's perfect. (Lookin' at you Civic Type R.) () Performance. Those familiar with VW's realizes their engines are significantly underrated in terms of HP, a practice linked to insurance rates in Europe and elsewhere. The GTI doesn't match the performance of the Civic Type R but it's much closer than the numbers suggest. But even ignoring that, the marvelous 2.0L turbo engine in the GTI is amazingly "tunable" at a very modest cost. And contrary to claims that ECU tuning invalidates one's warranty, it doesn't. For a price of about $800 and thirty minutes at a tuning shop, the GTI's HP and torque can be enhanced to Civic Type R levels. () Handling and "Driveability." I hesitate to say that you have to drive a GTI to understand its handling for every environment from urban traffic to canyon carving, but that's the case. It's not the off-the-showroom floor track weapon that the Veloster N aims to be but for any environment short of that it's simply awesome. () DSG versus MT. Unlike its major competitors in the US, the GTI gives customers a choice between an excellent manual transmission and an equally good dual clutch automated manual box. Until I purchased my 2012 GTI I had spent more decades than most readers here have been alive with a manual transmission vehicle in my garage. When I purchased the 2018 GTI I didn't hesitate to stick with the DSG. Not only does it shift more quickly than any human being, it gives me every bit as much "engagement" as an MT in "manual mode." And if I don't like the DSG's behavior, I can change it with a 30 minute tune of the software that controls it. (See APR.) ()Price. There are two common complaints related to the price of the GTI. First, that its MSRP is significantly higher than its competitors and at the top trim (Autobahn) level nearly as expensive as the Golf R and second that US spec GTI's lack the features of GTI's available in Europe. Several points. First, simply comparing MSRP's is a terrible way to evaluate the "real world" price of almost any vehicle. Last spring the out-the-door price of my fully loaded Autobahn DSG was $32,043 plus TTL, about $6000 under MSRP. Compared to the best offers I received for a Civic Type R and a Golf R, that was a savings of at least $10,000. The Veloster N wasn't available at that time but I strongly suspect that few will be sold without a second "market adjustment" sticker. Others may have a different experience in serious negotiations but the lesson here is that an MSRP is at best a rough guide to the price of a vehicle. It's true that US spec GTI's don't offer a number of features available on the GTI sold in Europe. (The digital cockpit and several engine tweaks including dual injection being the most notable.) But it's also true that the top trim Autobahn GTI in Europe sells for nearly $20,000 more than the Autobahn in the US. VW has learned jto its regret that while Europeans consider the GTI a premium vehicle, Americans won't pay $50,000 for a GTI. () GTI versus Golf R. A number of reviewers and those making comments point out that the Golf R offers AWD missing on the FWD GTI and a significantly more powerfully tuned engine. The Golf R is a magnificent vehicle in my opinion. I seriously considered one when I purchased my GTI. But as noted above, I found the real world price difference was much more than the oft-cited "few thousand dollars" in the US. (Canadians may have a different experience.) However, the HP/Torque differences can be largely eliminated for a cost of less than $1000. What the GTI can't match is the Golf R's AWD. But AWD adds about 300 lbs to the weight of the vehicle. That's like carrying around an NFL linebacker in the backs seat. And VW's 4Motion is an FWD biased system. It shifts power to the rear wheels only when slip is detected in the front wheels. It's undoubtedly useful and a Golf R feels far more "planted" than a GTI but it does have disadvantages in terms of nimble handling and price. () Niggles and complaints. Love my GTI but it ain't perfect. No wireless charging and not enough USB ports. (Though my center console includes a 9 volt outlet that can easily be fitted with an adapter that adds two USB ports accessible to the passenger and the the back seat.) Lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and pedestrian detection lack some minor features my KIA Sorento has. None seem important to me but others might differ. The Fender (i.e. Panasonic) sound system is good but again, not as good as the audio in my Sorento. The paddles are a little on the small side but that's easily fixed with third party add-ons. That's about it. () Bottom Line. Obviously, I'm addicted to my GTI. I try to be objective about it but when it collected a bolt in a rear tire last week I felt like a beloved pet had been injured. There are some compelling alternatives out there, more than ever in fact even with the demise (in the US) of the Focus RS. And unfortunately Americans don't even have the opportunity to drive, much less purchase some other excellent choices. I wouldn't argue with those who make another choice but for me the GTI is the best.

Guys, I have a 2018 GTI and it’s so much fun to drive; but as some of you have mentioned, and as soon as I started driving the car a few days after I took delivery, a rattling noise started to come up. The first thing you need to test is if you open (slide back the sunroof; and I am talking millimeters) and start driving; if the noise disappears then watch the video I just posted on my account. You basically have to get a 6 to 8 inches long and flat piece of rubber and set it on the “tray” that’s right behind the aluminum end of the sunroof. The noise stops immediately! It’s probably a design defect vs assembly issue. Hope this helps.

Huge GTI fan here! I'm 57, and have owned the Mk1, Mk2, and the Mk4 GTI. I have been driving my 2003 24V VR6 GTI now for almost 17 years, and it has been the most reliable car I, or the rest of my family has ever owned! This included Japanese cars too. I still have the original chains on the motor, and have the dealership put Castrol Syntec oil in there once a year. The only mechanical issues this car has had was the voluntary VW coilpack issue recall (back in 2004?), and an engine cooling fan failure after 12 years. That's it! I am convinced that this car can last me another 17 years, it's that well made (made in Brazil, too)! I will probably keep this gem, but am thinking of getting a brand new 2019 GTI, just to be up to date with cars and technology. My only concern, and I hear this a lot, is that GTI reliability has gone down. I need reliability since I often take long trips between Cleveland and New York City (round trip) every year. Comments welcome.

Good review! FYI the harsh ride can be fixed by swapping out the 18” wheels with 17”, thereby allowing a 235/45/17 tire with much higher sidewalks (more cushioning) than the default 225/40/18. Also going with a nice Grand Touring tire (Michelin Premier A/S 3) rather than Michelin Pilot Sport gives 95% as good performance but with a vastly improved ride quality. Got this tip from a consultant at Tire Rack. Has greatly improved the livability of using my GTI as a daily driver.

Also some videos are popping up on youtube of it happening to people. I cannot recommend this car. I have been to the dealer once already and their "fix" didn't take. Still stalling. Have to go back again next week to have them try again.

Yes, stalling is an issue on the 2019 gti manuals. The NHSTA has opened a review and there are over 130 complaints. I wouldn’t touch this car until they have a fix. It’s too bad because I really would like to buy one.

I had a 2015 the car is good but has one critical design flaw which is too much torque for FWD. Even on dry pavement it was hard not to spin the tires but you get that car in the rain or even just cold weather and it is frustrating to drive. There is no excuse for them to not offer AWD. I know Golf R, but those are MSRP 42K and there are so few around you'll end up paying that or nearly that. I ended up getting a Kia Stinger with AWD. MSRP was 49K but I got 8,500 off that between dealer discount and kia rebates. I was less than a Golf R and it is night and day better car
