Mine is the 2018 Autobahn with a DSG. Love it dearly, especially since the DSG provides all the "engagement" I crave in manual mode and a relaxed driving experience when putting along at 5-20 mph in stop-n-go freeway traffic around Seattle.

I wish something the size of a golf still had a place in my life. I had a mkv gti apr tuned and absolutely loved driving that car. Had two kids and had to go big to a wagon. The wagon wasn't scratching my performance itch but the space it had was perfect for our livelihood. I was in the market for a new car and wanted a manual golf R so bad but I knew it didn't have the cargo space we needed so had to go bigger. The golf line will always have a place in my heart though.

Our selection of fun wagons consist of super expensive luxury cars, and at this point I think I'm down to the merc AMG E wagon or the Volvo polestar. Awesome cars but a bit more than I want to spend. I ended up trading my A6 avant for a stinger GT1. No regrets the car is fantastic, but it is the first non VAG car I've had in the past 15 years so I am still recovering from the shock haha.

Reasons to not have a sunroof: more headroom, less weight (better performance), better gas mileage (because of less weight), fewer things to break (glass cracks, leaks, etc.).

I get the used M2 thought, but you know that there is a lot more to it than just the asking price. First the GTI's (at least down here) go for well below MSRP, then you have a brand new car with a 6 year 72,000 mile full factory warranty compared to a used (most likely tracked and beat on) car with little to no warranty. So when things start to malfunction on that M2, buckle up. The GTI isn't a weekend track toy, it is a DD that you could also have some fun on a track with occasionally, so apples and oranges really. A much better consideration might be with that new Hyundai N model, out of those two which would you rather have?

I have been considering Rabbit GTI vs going full Golf R. Manual Rabbit with driver assist package (DAP) for auto high beams and adaptive cruise is 36K MSRP (before freight/pdi/fees/taxes). A Golf R is ~44K with manual/DAP. Now it's only 9K more to go full R. Even less if you were considering GTI autobahn. It used to be a ~15K more for R just a few years ago, GTI prices are creeping up..... that diff is not that great and still has weird understeer characteristics, full R feels way better to drive. I've never seen anyone say the opposite. If you can afford this, see if you can afford a bit more. Unless you really want that plaid... in that case, buy a used 2015-2017 MK7 GTI. Oh, and I really liked the intro time travel/infinity stones skit! 😆👍

Almost every single review i have read says the GTi is the better drivers car than the R - the R is better around a track but the GTi is better in the real world.. I have the EU Gti 230 - i think the sound is a bit crap and always wished id gotten the R (mainly for the noise) - so mabey im a hypocrite though haha

I currently own a 2015 GTI, 210hp non Power Pack with open diff and brake vectoring (XDS). It's decent, but the R drives like an entirely different performance car. Less efficient due to AWD system, but I'm definitely leaning towards R vs GTI for next car.

I got the 2018 DSG SE model and put a few bolts-on on E85. My dyno numbers are 384 whp and 481 wtq, I am still impressed with the numbers I made and still stock engine and is20. I love this car and to make it better put some coilovers.

After having an SE GTI, the rabbit is less of a car than the SE trim, no sun roof, no HD radio or satellite, no fender stereo, less charging ports, and no leather seats My SE got totaled by the insurance co (in that they didn’t want to pay to repair it after an accident {I hit a road sign at 60mph} so I went shopping and the dealer wanted me to get a 2019 rabbit, and after having an SE for 2 years I would’ve been paying more for less of a car. I wasn’t happy, thankfully I went right back to the dealer and switched out for a 2018 SE GTI and I’m very happy Thanks to the folks at Fairfax VW in Virginia

And that's where it's down to personal preference. I've read from a LOT of folks who would love the SE but want the cloth seats and no sunroof. More have said the Fender doesn't add much/isn't worth the upgrade money than the other way that I've read so far. Satellite is nice but these days with all the streaming services and playing from phones via Bluetooth it's becoming a bit obsolete (thus an unnecessary cost, and personally I hated how much they robo-call bombed me after I unsubscribed). More charging ports is usually a good thing, but often more an issue if you regularly have more people as well so depends who/what all you're hauling. For many, the Rabbit is fitting a great empty spot between the S and SE offering some upgrades without many they don't see as needed, and without having to pay the higher SE price for it since they can't be optioned (or optioned out) on the S/SE.

Im a parts consultant for a VW dealership and we just did a bunch of APR upgrades to a brand new Rabbit GTI, downpipe, carbon intake, stage 2 tuning and DSG tune and this thing is sick. the customer already ows a Golf R and he is super stoked on his Rabbit. in stock trim they are great cars but after the APR goodies its a little monster.

The US version is spec'd with the lower end head unit, FWIW. Street pricing is at just under $28k USD, too, which makes it a very competitive offering v. any of the other hatches when comparable features are thrown in. The inclusion of the LED lights, LSD and bigger brakes is nice at that price point, too. It is nice that the Rabbit is also spec'd with the front and rear collision sensors, especially if used for grocery getting and the daily commute.

Im a bit confused why they label it as a rabbit. I own an mk1 rabbit and used to own an mk5 rabbit as well. Rabbits don't have sport performance features. It was originally a fun car for throttle heads on a budget. They are fun cars to work on and drive in general, but the GTI is a whole different level of performance. It just makes me sad that VW would label a GTI with a rabbit logo and just not come out with a new mk7 rabbit.

Had a 2007 BMW and the sunroof drain broke leaking water into the well in the trunk that contains - Battery - Wiring Harness If I can help it I won't have another sunroof... or modern BMW again.

Looks like there is not much of a difference between 2018 GTI Autobahn. We used to own GTI 2010, it was a great car, manual, we loved it. VW wanted to buy it back after 2 years and we gave it up. We also owned Audi's and drive A4 Technic now, great car. So we decided to get another GTI, looking at reviews and having nice memories about the one we had. So we bought GTI Autobahn and I must say that it is not as fun as I remembered. Little things that get me irritated and we only drove 2000 km. 1. Squeaks inside the car, took the car to the dealer - sunroof needs to be replaced, some seal defects. 2. When shut the car down, little vacuum kind of noise is very audible inside the car, when open the hood there is a rattling noise with quite noticeable beeps. The mechanic said that the car is shutting itself down and diagnosing all the components. That noise stays for 15 mins at least. Really weird to me, never heard something like this. 3. Wind noise is horrible, sounds like the window is a bit open, but it looks all good. The dealer says it is normal. Anyone in the car can hear it, and it is surely on the driver's side. I am not sure what it is - the design, seals quality?? I don't know, but it is really annoying. 4. When opened the hood, noticed that there is no soundproof "foamy fabric", pure metal. All the cars I had and have all have the soundproof under the hood. When asked the service lady, she said VW decided to get rid of it as rodents get inside, etc. Funny explanation. 5. DSG, 6 speed - is not as good DSG as comparing to the one I had before on A3, A4 and the A4 I have got now. 7 speed DSG on A4 in any mode is fantastic, shifts amazingly well, just like I would shift with manual. GTI's DSG seems under-performing (shifts too early) in D mode and over-performing (shifts too late) in S mode. I tried different settings in custom mode, but could not make it shift any better. I started using shifters a lot. Too bad I could not get the manual as they were all sold out. 6. Door design is really weird, I am not sure why VW went this way and decided to change it, but oh well, so be it. 7. Interior is great, no questions, even fingerprints on the display are not a big deal. The resolution of the screen could be better. Again, might not matter for others, I am comparing to our A4 with very crisp screens. 8. DAP is not bad, but it is not great. Cheap graphics and ergonomically strangely placed. Other than all that, the car is still fun, but not as it used to be. That is a good lesson for me not to buy cars without thorough test drives. We wanted to get 2018 and there were few left in Canada, so I did not really have a chance to test drive and pay attention to these little details. My son and I did one test drive and it was quick.

As a 1st time, since the '70s, VW owner of a 2017 GTI SE I wish the Rabbit had been available at the time of my purchase. I love my SE mostly for the leather interior. The Tartan is nice but "less mature"? The only thing I'd change on my SE would be a Sunroof delete!! I can't, for the life of me, figure why you have to pay extra for a hole in the roof, especially for one whose sunshade refuses to stay closed? I live off the Carcinogenic Coast and that is entirely unacceptable in the dog days of summer! Out of the box power is probably fine in most instances. I chose to add a JB4 tune and a few suspension upgrades and my SE now makes me smile every time I get in it. The MQB GTI has one of the very best fun/utility quotients! VW If you would offer an interior materials option and maybe seating position memory I'd own two. Love my GTI !!!

Great review, very entertaining. The main reason for no sunroof on the sportier variants, Rabbit GTI or Golf R, is for weight savings and a lower center of gravity. Not to mention co$t reduction. Removing the sunroof shaves a good 50+lbs from the worst spot possible (high up in the car). You can notice it more in corners.

@@edugamer950 In the US the Rabbit is a limited edition version of the base S model that adds abour $1300 to the MSRP in return for its limited numbers, led headlights, the traditional Clark plaid seats, and keyless access/pushbutton start. In Canada the Rabbit is the mid-level trim that offers those same features and provides a variety of other extra cost options focused mainly on driver assistance.

used M2 for $28,000 USD (~37,000 Canadian $)?? Are they in a different universe?? I would also take an M2 over a GTI but the prices are in completely different leagues. Maybe Canada is different.

The Rabbit Edition is the same as the Sport Edition from 2017. I own a 2017 Sport and I think it is the best bang for the buck with the LSD, Keyless access, wheels, Golf R brakes, traditional plaid interior just like this Rabbit Edition. Thank you for the overview!

You're not alone but you don't have much company, at least among actual buyers. VW limits the number of individually available options and packages the options that are available into a few trim levels to contain production costs and reduce the number of GTI's sitting on dealer lots for extended periods. The good news is that Americans pay significantly less for GTI's than Europeans pay. In Germany the rough equivalent of an Autobahn GTI sells for over $50,000 in current exchange rates.

Dag-gum, this car is making it harder to choose a brz (premium) and/or the GSW4mo/Alltrack-S 6spd as my next car. I have a mk4 gti now and I want something different, but this car puts up a great argument to stay w/a gti. Manual seats are lighter. No sunroof is lighter. However all the good and they (vw) put a rabbit sticker on the back...a sticker! Good to see it keeps the plaid seats.

In the US they apparently have that area blank and mail you a silver metal Rabbit logo badge to stick on. Not as obvious as the sticker size, but something a bit more solid.

Got mine a couple days ago in black. I miss being able to move the cruise control setting up or down by 10km/h... otherwise fully satisfied. I do think it's funny manual drivers still think they do a better job than DSG. Maybe fine tune the mode settings?

Another advantage to not having a sunroof is better CofG. It puts weight in almost the worst spot possible.

I got the VW Golf Turtle edition. It's a lot slower. I paid $1000 more for the green paint.
