Fellow R1 rider here and here are my 3 not-so-pro tips: 1- Bad news, the brakes won't get better by simply changing pads. If you want to use it on track, you'll need to ditch the ABS or it WILL fade at anything faster than slow intermediate pace... the problem is in the pump desing and no pads can fix that. The recipe for success is the same as it is for all other bikes really! Braided lines, pads and even a 19x18 Master cylinder if you prefer that feel and you'll never look back. Ppl will tell you to get new calipers, you don't need them. Stock ones are really good and there are plenty of ppl wining races on superstock on them! 2- The rear shock is the next weak link unfortunately... the stock rear shock needs all the help it can get and that's on 'road tires' (i.e. Supercorsas SP). Anything stickier and it won't be able to handle it. 3-Riding in A mode on a bike that hasn't been properly tuned will only make you slower as it is ridiculously jerky... and it gets worse if you just slap a midpipe + slip on on it as it leans it out further. Once you get those 3 things taken care of, this thing is a safer (and faster) bike to ride than any 600 I have ever ridden... and I rode/raced 600s for 8 years!

Yammie: A quick note about the brakes... If you're trying to upgrade them for longevity and reduce fade, Get a set of EBC race pads. They're the best bang-for-your-buck as far as pads. Also, I'd highly recommend upgrading the brake fluid to a DOT 5.1 fluid, which is the newest blend out there that has nearly identical performance figures as the silicone-based DOT 5 fluid, but it's compatible with systems that utilize DOT 3 or DOT 4 in standard trim. Motul has bottles on sale right now that you can grab for not a whole lot of money. That should set you up nicely for good brakes that aren't going to fade within a session.

EBC Double-H Sintered pads will solve the fade issue for cheaper than springing on Vesrah or something along those lines. I have yet to get the ABS to kick on running A-group on my 2016. Wonderful bike. Get it flashed/tuned if you haven't, it will net you about 14-15 wheel horsepower over stock and fix the snatchy throttle in the low/mid RPM range. Also you are right, drop the fork caps to be just above even (sticking up maybe 2mm) with the upper triple, it helps the bike with stability.

You can tell by the onboard footage the difference between an expert pro rider versus an experienced intermediate rider. His lines are tighter, his lean seems more and he corner approach looked like he was braking later and harder. I also noticed a few times what looked like some wheel sliding. Definitely a cool comparison.

I really appreciate Brandon's comments about the liter bike versus a 600. Coming from a Daytona 955i then to a newer GSX R 600, I much prefer my 600 over the 955. The (almost) liter bike was great for the power and torque, but the 600 is so much more manageable and fun to ride.

The reason I ask is, if it was mounted on the chin bar of his helmet then it looks like he was just sitting square on the bike when cornering. Surely this is not the case with a pro rider.

Why doesn't Yamaha make the R6 crossplane?
@chasp_0784
@chasp_0784 4 жыл бұрын
Old platform basically, none of the manufacturers have really done any significant engine updates on the 600 class for a long time. I don’t think they are investing in them as they are kind of out of favour. Could be wrong but I’ve read that a crossplane setup needs some beefy counter balancing inside the engine and would add weight and complexity. Finally a 600 is super peaky power, crossplane benefits midrange power/corner exit which is kind of opposite goals?
@Zoli4119
@Zoli4119 4 жыл бұрын

Curious as to what your thoughts are, but noticed when Brandon was riding that when he would come out of corner's and lay into the throttle that the front forks would shimmy. Is that b/c he's imparting that much counter steer on the bars or what?
@mopedmessiah
@mopedmessiah 4 жыл бұрын
Hes really pushing it and letting the front end float a bit. Watch all fast racers, Guy Martin and the like. If they push so hard that the tire starts wallowing and stepping out, you sort of "catch it" by steering out of the direction. Push the tire in, say in a left turn, and when it starts to wallow out from under you from leaning too far, turn the bars right and sort of has that shimmy affect to it. Its like drifting almost, except the back end isnt necessarily stepping out. Ive done it on my scoot when im pushing it hard through a corner. Its weird, but it works lol

@@nickfountain8420 no problem! Thats just what I've figured from it. I think I've even heard someone say it before, but i cant remember who. "They let it give, but they know how much to let it give" or something like that. It shaves time off getting the bike through the corner by not trying as hard to keep 100% traction and focusing more on carrying it through, but it takes a long time to master and know just how far you can go. Really Michael Dunlop, Guy, any fast guys on the Isle. If you want, watch the video of the S1000RR on the Isle of Man. The bikes all over the place at all times. A big fuck nope from me though 😂

@@yammienoob so nice to see the R1 in its natural environment. Also, even tho I wrecked my 1st track day I still prefer it to street riding. No cars. No distracted drivers. No cross traffic. So much less stressful
