I remove my supercharger lid & intercooler and get a surprise regarding the OEM oil separator effectiveness on the 2020 2021 & 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500!

Correction: Ford did have conflicting data about what was included with the 2020 handling package cars, but working off 4 year old memories, I swapped the adjustable strut top mounts with the oil separator. The separator was in fact included with the 2020 HP cars. The adjustable strut top mounts were officially not... although some owners received some that were intended for other VINs. This was corrected in 2021 & 22... those cars received the adjustable strut top mounts.

I wonder if the J&L oil separator would be superior to the Ford separator? I have had an excellent experience with the one on my 2013...

Thanks for the terrific video. I recently purchased a 2021 GT500. The prior owner never installed the Ford oil separator. I’ve always used JLT catch cans and love them for the simplicity and appearance. I have them on my 2009KR and my 2019 GT Coyote. Plus I like knowing how much oil is being collected but unlike you I don’t track my cars so there is no danger of them filling up. But your excellent video has convinced me to order a new JLT (now J&S) for my 2021. I’m an old school mechanic and after seeing your video I have a theory about why some oil passes through the Ford designed separator. Basically with the extra tube for drain back going back to the valve cover my belief is that as RPMs fluctuate, pressure changes occur inside the Ford unit due to the third (return) tube. By having only an inlet and outlet, the JLT can maintain the same pressure inside as the pressure or suction has no way to reverse although I am quite sure it rises and falls but never can go negative. I’m interested in your thoughts and even wonder if you were to place a tap on the line out to the intercooler for a pressure/vacuum gauge on the Ford built unit and with someone sitting in the car stepping on the throttle to vary the RPM, you might observe the condition firsthand. My car sees extreme use. I suspect the Ford return style separator is as good as it gets and other catch can systems would have resulted in more oil getting through. The development team did extensive tests and the return style system was deemed best. Congrats on your 2021 by the way… they are bad ass cars!

Great Video Tim! I was about to swap out that factory one for a J&L Seperator. Think that stock one is ugly, and I'm about to swap to Carbon Fiber Coil covers, and the factory one covers the coil covers. LOL. I don't track my car like you, but do have fun on the street and drags. Think i'd be ok with a aftermarket oil seperator? Keep the great vids coming!

If you go with a catch can, check it and empty it often.

I have the handling pack and tech pack on my 2020 and I got one.

What likely happened: previous owner added it or the dealer gave it to you in error. The oil separators were sent to the dealerships separately (loose items). You likely got one intended for a different VIN. Like I said in the video… there was conflicting info and confusion in 2020 about the HP cars. In the end, Ford said those cars do not get the separator.

I don’t know if my car was an anomaly, but my car is a 2020 with the handling package and mine has a factory oil separator. It 100% was not put on after market.

It is from the “loose items” decal that came on the outside of the car when new. I misspoke in the video. I was thinking the adjustable strut top mounts, which Ford had conflicting info on. The oil separator came with the CFTP and handling package cars.

@@ShelbyFlyer Thank you for that info. I'm dealing with a dealer who claims the Catch Can didn't come with "some" CFTP cars, which isn't true. I don't understand why some people/dealers default to screw the customer rather than make the customer whole for what we paid for.

My car sees extreme driving at the track. Cars not pushed so hard will likely have little to no oil escaping the separator.
