32:00 Thank you!!! Finally some reason in the F1 fan community. It's actually scary to see how many idiots there are, saying Ferrari do this to Seb on purpose to prevent him from getting close to Charles and beating him. That's such bullshit. And it's really insane there are people actually seriously thinking it. I just saw the video of Seb's post race interview on the Sky YT channel and basically all the comments say it's sabotaaaaaage! Oh, people, just use some basic human logic.... Their car is already shit enough, it's already a humiliation that they have so much less constructor points than in previous years, I'm pretty sure they are trying to get the maximum they can out of that shitbox (with the 2 different drivers they have, with 2 different driving styles!), it's just that they always mess something up, including the strategy, but not on purpose, of course.

I’m not sure about requiring two stops, as one of the things that made this race interesting was the uncertainty over whether certain drivers would do two stops (for instance, Leclerc made the one stop strategy work really well while everyone around him came in twice).
@SaadHaque72
@SaadHaque72 4 жыл бұрын
Brooke Garbarini yeah same, rather just make it softer so either u go safe and 2 stop or gamble on one stop and have much faster cars in fresh rubber behind you
@ccramit
@ccramit 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it wasn't necessarily the pit stops, but a combination of other things. Even with the two stopping teams, there was a question of when and what compound. Will they be pushing on that compound or will they be managing them and switch and then push on the next compound? It kept every team scrambling and changing strategies on the fly. Whatever it is, there is no question that this race was probably one of the more interesting races in a while and the midfield battles weren't more interesting than the leaders. I think Pirelli will have a lot to do about making races interesting again. Maybe make the tires softer to the point that 2 sets COULD make it to the end if they are nursed the whole race, but 3 sets will be the faster and preferred option. I feel like right now, most teams know they can make it to the end relatively easily on 2 sets so they don't even think twice about one stopping and so the entire race is just tire management and only maybe 4 or 5 laps of actual racing. Look at the more interesting races in 2019. Germany had ever changing weather conditions so that pit stops were randomly occurring and people were all on different sets of compounds at different times. Or Brazil 2019 (granted, there were safety cars and penalties), where Max stopped 3 times, Hamilton 3 times, Gasly twice, and Sainz just once.

@mikewazowski7457
@mikewazowski7457 4 жыл бұрын
Nice try with the 3 compound rule suggestion. Don't think it will work as it will limit the strategy options. You would not have a Leclerc finishing on P4 with a dog of a car by doing a 1 stop strategy. If all compounds would be mandatory it is a easy calculation what order is fastest. Start on the hard, second stint on the medium and last stint on the software, just based on weight. This is even more predictable than what is implemented now. Next option would be to return to refueling, to get the weight as a variable. Skip the tire requirements, we are back to what the rules where before the tyre requirements. People will start complaining that F1 is to much based on strategy's instead of drivers skill. Can't please everyone. Be glad this race gave a different result. Verstappen has always been good at tyre management and with the Mercedes chewing the rubber away at high temperatures gave the Red Bull a chance to push them over the cliff.

We should ditch the Q2 starting tyre rule, then mandate that everyone used all 3 tyres during the race. This forces a 2-stop race and will definitely produce mixed strategies.

Well, you know of course Vettel screwed up with that spin,but he still managed to get from 20th to 12th, so his race pace is not total rubbish. With a better strategy he could have finished in the points. So maybe in a different car he really could be competitive again.

@@varunsambi2004 in terms of a viewers spectacle indeed. It was quite a boring race with some very occasional good action. On the other hand, it was a tactical masterpiece. Not only Verstappen managing his tyres as a boss, but Leclerc as well. And Albon who come back the lon way. If he only would have better saturdays. And when you look to other teams beside Mercedes, they almost all had tyres full of blistering and signs of excessive wear at the end of the race. It was not an unique situation exclusive to Mercedes. But the first race at Silverstone was the pinnacle of F1's problem with lacking racing for both the general public and racing fans. At least the 70th anniversary edition had more action and suspense for the racing fans. Though still not enjoyable for the general public I think.
@HarrieWorst
@HarrieWorst 4 жыл бұрын
@firdous it was indeed far from historic. The only historic about it, it was the first and last F1 70th anniversary grand prix. And when I look at unique celebrating edition races, Mercedes doesn't have a great track record for them. They lost it at their own 125th anniversary at Hockenheim, and they lost it at the F1 70th. And Verstappen won both.

@Boerkreeelis
@Boerkreeelis 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about the 2-stop rule, or using 3 types of tires. Although I'd love a bit more variation in the races, you might just end up with only battles being fought using tactics rather than on track, as you might get drivers on softs easily overtaking drivers on hard who are not on the same strategy and just don't want to lose time. When you include that many new variables, it might just lead to completely incomprehensible races (for those perhaps not as into F1) as people in front are not actually in front because they are on a different strategy with a different tire. As far as choosing the tire: Making that more risky choice of trying it on medium or hard can also be interesting, I wouldn't throw it out immediately. I would remove any ruling about party-modes, have them all set up as they would use in the race, but I'm not sure about the suggestions. Then again, it's always worth a try (which is why it was a shame the reverse grid didn't get its test run, even though I don't agree with the idea).
@tribe_tv1922
@tribe_tv1922 4 жыл бұрын
Biggest problem I see is that you effectively remove tyre management as a skill. Some of the best races are ones ijn which 1 stop runners try to make it to the end and hold track position through tyre management vs faster 2stop runners. Perez has several podiums by driving like this and it'd be a shame to see that free choice of strategy disappear
@Boerkreeelis
@Boerkreeelis 4 жыл бұрын

The Q2 tyre rule was brought in cause the old rule where the top 10 start on their Q3 tires meant the upper midfield cars (pos. 7-10) wouldnt run in Q3 so they get a choice of tire for the race start. I dont like the idea of mandatory 2 stops for a race. It goes against drivers who are better at saving their tyre. I always think of Kobayashi pitting with 3 laps to go and nicking a 3rd place. Change the tyres so that there are different strategy options between a 1 vs 2 stop or a 2 vs 3 stop. Forcing drivers to stop multiple times just seems too much of an intrusive rule for me.

a team will always have a slight preference for the better/faster driver. the intensity of that preference depends on how far up the field the team is - battling for the title, for wins, podiums, points? vettel has completely checked out at this point, even though ferrari getting rid of him is fair. every time i see him talk it looks like he couldn't care less, and it's been like that for a while now, not just this year but also last year and the years before that after he lost the title challenge or the countless times he made a mistake.

This was a great podcast, well done Tom B! It takes a lot to do something you're not too comfortable with but you smashed it. I always love your analysis because you are so knowledgeable and evaluate both sides and come to the great consensus. About the 3 tyre rule, I LOVE that idea and it should happen. I also think that the teams should be given a 5 race 1 stop joker, so for 5 races during the year you have to do a 1 stop. No one knows when a team will use them so it just gives an extra bit of strategy and spice to a race. Tommo is a really good addition and ye work well together. Looking forward to the next one!

Also, the reason the Q2 tyre rule exists is to make it easier for Pirelli. Teams who don't make it to Q3 have 1 extra tyre regardless, but those who do make it to Q3 are given that extra tyre which they start on by Pirelli as they use 1-2 extra tyres than others in Q3. If you remove that rule, Pirelli will have to make like 30 more tyres, 3 compounds for 10 drivers to give them an option. Pirelli last year was already complaining bout too many tyres, i don't see them throwing this rule away anytime soon.

The thing about Mercedes is that they’ll probably bounce back stronger than ever. They seem to come back very strong after each defeat. The fact that they got P2 and P3, after winning and getting pole on every race so far, yet are still desperate to get better shows how determined they are to win.

The problem with the tyres right now are that Pirelli chose the middle ground where the teams can make a 1 stop by managing the tyres, whereas Pirelli claimed it was making team push for longer. They need to go to either extreme where teams basically have to do at least 2 stops so they will push more

Has been my first Podcast on WTF1 and i felt entertained. So great job, even when you had to jump in as a subtitute. Just my few coins about tire degredation. It's not just the amount of pit stops, you have to make 2 stops viable again, and i don't see it coming with only tire degredation. Bring back refueling maybe, with the technic we got nowadays, it should be doable to make refueling safe, without creating scenes, where boxes lit up, during refuel. E.g.: Ferrari seems to be doing a lot better with a light car. So why not give the teams the option again, to balance their cars with refueling? When you're only going with tire degredation, evertyhing will be as it is. There'll be "the best" strategy at one point and every team will do this one strategy. As you said, F1 drivers were "crying" about the tires not lasting and they couldn't race flat out. Pirelli then made them more durable. But what the drivers and teams made out of it was managing the tires so hard, so that they only need to stop once....So why is nobody crying out loud now, that they can't race flat out? Suddenly no Driver cares about flat out racing anymore, since the new benchmark for a good driver is, being a good tire manager. I get the feeling that we're not watching drivers anymore, but seeing the best managers during race. And there's way too many influence from the outside. How comes, a driver has to ask for more power? Why is Max race mechanic telling him, to not attack mercedes, because they need to look after their tires.....?These are the things, which are going wrong. We need to bring back the racing to the drivers. So less influence from mechanics, less sensors or information from it just getting handed to the driver after race. Let the drivers go, feel the car and tell the mechanics how it is. Not the other way around. So in Summary: - More unpredictability with tire degredation and refueling. Giving teams more options for strategies, so that 2 stops or more become more viable. - Bring back the race to the drivers. Let the driver manage his power distribution etc. When he's overdoing it, his engine will degrade more, resulting in swapping out the engine early, getting penalties for changing etc. So the grid will be mixed more. I don't want to hear a race mechanic/team decide, how fast the driver is allowed to drive. That should be the driver's choice. Sensors etc. can stay, so that the driver can learn, where he ovderdid it maye, but let him get this information after the race. Sry for my english, it's not my first language.

A question, even if tyre compounds get softer (which I'm all for) Do we think that Merc could compensate easily for this and resume dominance? It also brings into question the DAS system, which obviously is to help warm up the tyres BUT also decrease the tow and help cooling on the straights? Given that Silverstone has a fair few straights you would have thought that they would have been able to keep it under control. Maybe I'm reading too much into tyre temperatures relating to degradation but it kinda leads me to believe that there's more to this system than we believe.

Honestly I like the q2 rule, you shouldn't be able to run any strategy you like and still make it in to q3. If you run a different tyre you need to have the pace to make it to q3 not just use the softest tyre and start on the hard anyway. Softer tyres for each race is the solution and not changing quali imo.
@Ancovg
@Ancovg 4 жыл бұрын
Remove 1 compound of tyres (just two sliks at a race). Remove Q2 mandatory tyre start. Bring harder tyres instead of softer but make them lose 10 seconds a lap once they are done (but don't explode). Remove mandatory use of both tyres in the race. Extend the race by 50 kilometers (355 km race) and longer then two hours.

I don’t really understand how exactly you can just get rid of the q2 rule. Let’s say Red Bull wants to put on a different tire on Max’s car to that of Lewis, since Lewis prolly qualified ahead of max. But since there’s no q2 rule, how will the team be able to? Would they go to the grid with all the tires, see what tires Lewis is putting on, and then put on a different set? Can’t Mercedes just like bluff their tires and then switch back to a different compound? It all seems a bit awkward to me. The q2 rules allows teams to make a decision as a driver is completing a lap, ensuring enough time and certainty that the team is running that tire for the start of the race.

Re Tyres - Yes to removing the Q2 rule but not so sure about the mandatory two stops and using all three tyres. While I agree it would be an entertaining spectacle and therefore good for F1, I'm also pretty sure that the general public just doesn't get why tyres have to be changed at all within a single race distance, which doesn't exactly help the broad perception that F1 is massively wasteful. I'm not saying that perception is valid, but I do think F1 could do a hell of a lot more to help create a better impression. So here's a crazy idea: What if the quickest way to full distance was not to stop? i.e. to use one well managed, fairly hard tyre with low degradation? A balance between maximum grip and minimal degradation. Also a tyre that can cope with starting fuel loads, but have enough rubber for a push on lighter loads towards the end of the race? What if the delta to using two sets of slightly softer tyres was close to zero? In other words, using two sets over a race distance is about 30 seconds faster than using a single set so as to negate the pit stop time. What if there's then a third softer tyre which is again calibrated to be approx 60 seconds, or two pit stops, faster over full race distance? Then you throw away the rule book regarding what teams HAVE to do with tyres, as - without ANY artificial restrictions - the teams have to match strategy to the circuit, track conditions and fuel load. There will be LOTS of pit stops because teams will have to factor in the benefit of a harder tyre with a heavier car, versus softer tyres with lighter fuel loads - but stopping a racing car during a race should ALWAYS be a bad thing to be avoided if possible and not regulated to impose artificially. My point is that this would create an extremely technical challenge for the teams, and a fascinating series of evolving strategy calls for die hard F1 fans - whilst also being really easy for your average joe to grasp: They won because they didn't stop as many times as the other teams/cars! And at the same time, the general public could no longer accuse F1 of having regulations that force a form of "throwaway" mentality. My further point is that it's a sad reflection on RACING when we have to resort to obliging teams to pit so many times per race to make it entertaining, and lastly I'm pretty sure that many more tyre manufacturers would want to be involved if they could demonstrate that their tyre won races simply because of durability and grip - an easy straightforward marketing angle that directly parallels what road car users actually want from a tyre, especially compared to the current tortuous nonsense where, as has been frequently pointed out, Pirelli are damned if they do and damned if they don't. Sorry, this is already over long, but I really think F1 has to very closely examine ANY regulation that's just built on historical precedent, especially if the precedent was more a result of Bernie having a brainstorm than a more considered decision the teams arrived at collectively.

On this first topic, my personal opinion is that its all about unpredictability. Mercedes didn't know if the tyre would be competitive and no one else thought the hards would work. If you had strategies where it was all about execution and the margins were very close, then there might be different strategies and one might be more optimal. It goes back to a point that's been made by WTF1 before which is that you need to restrict data to the teams more.

I’m gonna disagree a bit about forcing teams to use three different tyre compounds during the race. This would dictate strategy too much for me, and would mean every driver in every race always is on a two stop strategy (maybe very occasional 3 stoppers depending on the tyres). It would kill off any potential for a one stop - and what we need is strategy variation rather than forcing everyone onto a two stopper. I do agree that in general one stoppers are less exciting, but I think slightly softer tyres which encourage two stoppers is a better way to introduce variability than mandating two stops. I do agree that the Q2 tyre rule needs to go. All it does is usually ensure the front runners start on the same tyre and strategies therefore converge to the same thing. Remove that and we get more races like this weekend where Redbull is on a different tyre than Mercedes - and similar differences for the rest of the top 10.
