Hungary provided us with a crazy race with Max Verstappen winning from 10th on the grid and Lewis Hamilton taking P2 after starting 7th. We discuss their races as well as have another big old rant about Ferrari's strategy team.

After the Binotto interview I really wanted to ask how much faster does Ferrari need to be to win a race? 1 second per lap? 2 or even 3? Mercedes is in fighting distance with a car that often was a second or more slower. Red Bull won this race from P10 with reliability issues and a spin. Ferrari built a car that can win a championship but it looks like they need one that can't loose it.

Thing about the Ferrari strategy: Sainz told the team straight out "I want to go long and take the softs". Just as he did in Monaco, he took control of his own strategy. Leclerc didn't then, he didn't now. Thus my unpopular opinion: Leclerc is not innocent, he has to take some responsibility. He has to demand from the team that some strategies are talked about with him IN the race, not just before.
@kala5882
@kala5882 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it should be the driver's job to make their own strategy or fight the team on strategy. The driver should be able to trust the team on strategy. IIRC Leclerc told the team he was feeling good on his mediums and that's really all he ought need to do in my opinion.
@thecasualgamer1457

@@kala5882 Partly agree, the team strategists should be liable for strategy. But only the driver knows how it is to drive, and as we have seen with Hamilton, Alonso, Vettel, Raikkonen, Schumacher... and now Sainz. Good drivers takes responsibility of their own race when they strongly disagree with the teams failures. But I agree that the team should be able to do the right calls themselves, and they obviously are not that in Ferrari. And Sainz has done something about it with much better results than Leclerc when strategy has been part of the play. Don't have to, but it makes the able drivers on another level

That said, a lot of those points have been incidental. Russell was on a sub-optimal strategy in Hungary to counter the Ferraris (Lewis was on the optimal strategy to counter the Red Bulls). He had a tough time at the beginning of the year, but we also know that he was trying some wild setups when they didn't have the pace, just to see what if he could get a different results. But we can see on race pace that he's still a class above, just like Verstappen. He just has such a silky smooth touch with the tyres, it's pretty impressive. Don't know if you noticed, but when he pitted for softs, he was actually losing time to the guys ahead for like a lap and a half, and then started pumping in fastest laps after fastest laps. He really has figured out the best way to bring his tyres up to max performance and keep them there for longer than basically anyone, bar maybe Max.

A simple straight answer to the question in the thumbnail... yes, it's underrated. Funnily enough, for the past 10 seasons or so, the races at the Hungaroring have been much more interesting than the ones on the much beloved, (and rightly so) Spa.
@flyingphoenix113
@flyingphoenix113 Жыл бұрын
Everybody calls it the "Monaco without walls," but the reality is that T1, T2, and T3 consistently provide some of the best battles in the sport. Yes, the rest of the circuit is difficult to overtake, but the same could be said for most circuits, frankly. And, the lap is so short that you're back to those overtaking zones again quite quickly. I also find it a lot less predictable than, say, the Red Bull Ring, where the only option is to take the inside line and force the other car wide (or, chance it around the outside of T3/4, which almost never works).
@soundscape26
@soundscape26 Жыл бұрын
@@flyingphoenix113 I think that "Monaco without walls" nickname was given before the 2003 changes to the track. Before that turn 1 basically mirrored turn 14 (the last one) and the pit straight was shorter by 200 or so meters... it made overtaking a real pain. Nowadays Monaco could only hope to have a similar sector to Hungaroring's 1st one.

You know what? You're dead right. As much as I love Spa and cannot accept that it might drop off the calendar, the track is mostly a test of car performance and it's hard for a driver to make a difference. The last great race at Spa was probably 2017. In that time Hungary has had 2019, 2021 and 2022 as great races.
@soundscape26

@@matt_dobson0614 Spa has 2 obvious advantages over Hungaroring; it seems like a much more enjoyable circuit to drive around and of course the scenery is quite spectacular... but for one reason or another it has failed to deliver really entertaining races for the past few seasons. Don't forget also that boxing Sainz was also their way of not issuing team orders. Instead of boxing him in his medium compound window, they pulled him in on the same window as the softs and literally 1 lap after GR. I guess they figured they could keep GR covered, but could have used the info from Charles driving longer to see that the mediums we're good for long stints.

36:38 It's more that Lewis always had that toxic positivity in his posts and his interviews. He's always trying to cheer everyone up at the factory, at the garage, that's a statement some people from the Mercedes team keep repeating. Even when things doesn't go his way he somehow keeps repeating the worlds "let's keep pushing", that tells a lot of his power of will and character. In comparison, Wolf is like a dad for his drivers, Binotto in the other hand, treats his drivers like step-kids from a divorce.

I'm pretty sure I said something similar after last year's race, the Hungaroring is a very solid track. Turns 1-4 allow for some of the best racing of the year, simply because it's hard to pass and slam-dunk DRS moves aren't really possible. Yes the rest of the lap is follow the leader, but it's a short lap so you don't have to wait too long for the next opportunity. Over the past 10 years I would say it has been one of the more consistent tracks for providing a good race.

Katy with one of the fastest bad takes on the podcast ever. Alonso only going only for money? Really? Alpine hasn't really shown any signs of growth while Lawrence Stroll has shown plenty of willingness to throw money at the team and even poaching good engineers from RB and Mercedes for stupid amounts of cash. Alpine was only willing to give him one year contract while Aston is willing to do more and on top of that, did you see Ocon blocking Alonso and letting Hamilton pass and then he did the same damn thing with Ricciardo. Ferrari's biggest problem is they always try to counter the strategy of their opponents (Russel at the start of the Hungarian GP, later on Max with mediums) instead of simply doing their own race and react if the circumstances dramatically change. This is also the reason why Ferrari has Plan A to Plan F or whatever, because if for example RedBull pits for softs instead of mediums Ferrari changes their race plan. This is why we constantly here a Ferrari radio where LeClerc or Sainz are asked what they think of plan x. Ferrari has no real race plan their race plan depends on their opponents and this is the reason why they mess up all the time, because you simply cannot react to everything what happens in a race. There is always some luck invovled in winning a Grand Prix, but Ferrari tries to ignore this fact. First of all Russel was their biggest opponent to win the Hungarian GP so they countered the softs, during the race Ferrari realised Max has a real chance for the victory and adjusted their previous strategy and tried to counter Max, but their first strategy (lets call it Plan A) is in conflict with a strategy to counter Max. After that they realized this is not working and again adjusted their strategy and went on the softs, but at this point they have already lost the GP. So the combination of both strategies and switching between them resulted in the worst possible race strategy for Ferrari.

honestly, the reason why red bull are such masters of strategy is that they are adaptable and recognise the limitations in models and simulations. both red bull and ferrari's simulations showed that the hard tyre was a good race tyre - evidenced by the fact that they put max and checo on the hard tyre at the start. but when both drivers said that the tyre took a long time to warm up, they swapped for softs, demonstrating the adaptability when presented with evidence contrary to their data. this is unlike ferrari, who insisted that their simulations on the hard tyre would mean it would come up to temperature in time when they had real time evidence in alpine that it would not.

Exactly. I bet they only told Sainz to box then in order to avoid team orders situation. It started to become uncomfortable that Leclerc was so close to him and seemed faster. That box call had nothing to do with strategy, and that tells a lot about Ferrari and their strategy... Carlos had to do a Soft stint longer than his first Medium stint, that's very far from optimal... Not to mention screw up one pitstop, and then screw up another because why not. It's Haas level (or worse), not championship contender level.

@Lily1127channel Жыл бұрын
@@hunter_t18 And if they are still so scared of issuing team orders for Sainz, even after already doing it (however late) in Silverstone, that means they are completely incompetent in that regard too in the title fight. How on earth would they fight Max, who is 100% aided by RB and Perez, if they are so scared of team orders that they rather throw strategy out of the window just to avoid a team order situation. That is beyond ridiculous. Boxing Sainz so early could have made a bit sense in one case: if they split the strategies this way, pitting Sainz early and going for a quite long stint with Leclerc. But they pitted Leclerc almost immediately after Sainz too (despite the fact that he said the tyres are still okay), so the split strategy was absent too. Not to mention that they should have split strategies in the beginning in the first place, starting on soft and medium with the two drivers, like Mercedes did and always do. That's what you just have to do when you have 2 drivers in front against a team that has only one (Russel) there.

@@ehrlichgesagt863 you know what, that is a good point actually, but I think that even if he would stick to it and extended the medium stint and went to softs, he wouldnt have lost as much time as he did with this 'strategy' But you are right that overall it wouldnt be 30 seconds lost, he would fight either Max or Lewis too, maybe even lost to both, but I doubt he would miss the podium

The 12km or 3 laps to go wasn’t his new power unit, that was the estimated distance the old one would have went.
