That wasn't duct tape used to fix the rear wing, it is aviation/aerospace tape rated for over 220 mph. It is used all the time in NASCAR (and occasionally Indycar) to repair damage safely. The stuff costs several thousand dollars per roll. F1 wouldn't let a fix with standard duct tape stand.

The reason why McLaren's team orders are way less justified than Red Bull's is because a) They're not racing for a podium or a win b) They were on DIFFERENT. STRATEGIES. It makes no sense to have one hold up the other

Don't get me wrong I 100% agree that Daniel hasn't been performing this year but during the start of the race he had great pace and very likely could've fininshed in a higher postion than P8 if he wasn't told to stay behind Lando (not saying it's Lando's fault more that Mclaren strategy was appalling)

I can’t help but think that the enthusiasm in the British media when Max is winning is almost exactly like when Vettel was winning with Red Bull. When Seb was winning, Webber was more liked, Alonso was more liked. When Max is winning, Perez is more liked, Leclerc is more liked. Anything but the winning driver is more worthy of media support. Even though Max and Charles have equal DNFs, they aren't the same in terms of future impact. None of Max's failures were PU related, they were fuel related and the PUs weren't damaged. I think the FIA should set a maximum limit on bouncing to save the drivers from the teams. The teams are businesses who’s objective is performance, they will not sacrifice performance unless they are made too. This also then forces Mercedes to fix their car but not Red Bull because the Red Bull is fine already. With all the safety in these cars it is bizarre if the level of back pain Hamilton has is just fine, but Mercedes wont fix it unless they have to
@Felyxx
@Felyxx 2 жыл бұрын
You know what I find extremely hypocritical? The fact that Red Bull are saying nah we don't need a solution for porpoising because that would affect our performance. That literally literally happened exactly to Mercedes at the beginning of 2021. Literally the regulations were changed and they affected Mercedes which actually gave RB a chance at the title. Without those regulation changes at floor level Mercedes would've won about 90% of the races same as they did boringly through 2014-2020. Why penalise Mercedes then and not penalise RB now? Porpoising in this case is not affecting only Mercedes, they are simply affected the most. And the fact of the matter is, a driver will always choose a faster car over they general health and safety. Picture this: if the regulations allowed a second turbo which gives them 50 more horsepower but the turbo must be mounted right next to the driver's ear and will make such a racket that it may deafen the driver over time. How many drivers will choose to have that turbo vs not having it?

You are right about that both Leclerq and Verstappen both had 2 DNF's but Leclerq most likely is going to get grid penalties soon ( which is sad ) since several engineparts are close to the max number aloud per season. me too was hoping on lots of close racing between those 2 ( and the rest of grid too) over the whole 2022 season... let's see when the next 13 races will bring to us. Yes I am Dutch, and that makes me a bit biased perhaps.. but I really hope that we get more close fighting over the rest of the season form the whole grid. The cars can actually follow closer

I don’t think it would be difficult to implement a “bounce per min” rule. The drivers already wear in-ear accelerometers. If any driver experiences vertical oscillations above some threshold, for some pre-determined amount of time each lap, then that driver gets a time penalty. It could be entirely automated like the jump-start system.

This porpoising issue. Hear me out We're talking about protecting the drivers from the teams. The teams want to run the cars low for lap time and introducing a raised minimum ride height reg isn't fair on the teams who've got their cars right. Solution, Why cant the FIA implement a reg where by the cars have a sensor fitted that measures the porpoising and all teams are not allowed to exceed a set porpoising threshold limit set by the FIA. This would protect the drivers from the teams and would be fair across the board as all teams must comply to the rules, it would only effect cars that need to have the issues solved. Lets be honest, they can measure the cars porpoising now, they will 100% have sensors fitted and engineers that can see the exact moment porpoising is happening.
@wideboydave
@wideboydave 2 жыл бұрын
Yup agreed. In fact I think Merc should be careful to moan too much as I think this is the only implementation or intervention the FIA should do… ie work out a safe threshold and enforce it. This would disadvantage the Mercs the most at the moment. Fully agree that the FIA should NOT rule on ride height with regard to porpoising… they should focus on a suitable measurement (ie combination of amplitude and frequency). Maybe have a read of the HSE regs on workplace vibration exposure??? These regs are designed to limit people’s exposure to harmful levels of vibration (duration and energy)… I don’t see any real difference from industry to the drivers sat in the car for hours at a time during Practice, qualifying and the race… I’m not suggesting using the same levels and figures as the HSE, but the methodology behind it could be a reasonable starting template.

It's up to Mercedes NOT the FIA to fix the porpoising. Merc need to fix their own problems to protect their drivers. Drivers have a contract with their team, not the FIA. Hamilton is whinging about it a lot, Russell is getting on with what he has. HAM needs to suck it up and drive for the team, he's paid a hell of a lot more than Russell, yet he's under performing compared to his salary.

We just had a major regulation change. Large gaps between teams and reliability issues were bound to happen. If Ferrari can solve their issues we should get better fights at the front, especially now that cars can follow each other better. Also in the midfield battles should be better. This race was pretty shit because nobody defended their position and just waited another lap to use drs again. Plus, with the new regulations, top teams get less development time meaning over the years teams will converge quickly.

I am a Max fan and earlier this year I thought it was going to be difficult for Max to claw back that huge gap (assuming both teams were reliable). During the race it looked like Max had already taken something like 1.5 sec off Leclerc's lead and we seemed to be in for a good fight. I think Max, with the straight line speed advantage, would have gotten past Leclerc, but I guess we will never know. I don't think it's over though. One or two more failures from Red Bull and Leclerc could be way ahead again. And I don't remember how Red Bull are doing on their parts allocations.

It is not looking good for Ferrari. They will certainly incur penalties this season. RB may as well, but the championship may have already been decided by the time that happens.

RB switched to their 2nd PU at Baku. 7 races on PU1, and it’s still useable for FP1 and 2 the coming races. They’re bang on target for finishing the season without any penalties atm. Still, one blowup and that’ll likely change.

I mean.. Airplanes have been using a type of duct tape as well for some quick maintenance on their wings. I kind of figured an F1 team will probably use similar kind of tape as well. Sure, it's temporary but if it's good for a giant a** passenger jet that goes far far faster than an F1 car, then it's good enough for an F1 car.

I agree with the person who said most races have been boring. Yes it is true that with the new rules, cars can race close together but how many times has it happened? Most of the times majority of the cars are several seconds behind each other, some even 20 seconds behind the car they are following. For that reason we have had few instances of drivers fighting off for positions apart from the cars at the front (Ferrari and redbull) in some races. In some races we have even hoped for a yellow flag to bring the cars back close together behind a safety car then we can enjoy a minute of close racing before the gap builds up again. Hopefully it will improve as teams bring up upgrades; if they still have money for upgrades.

BPM is not the right thing. The bouncing amplitude is the one who should be seen. If the amplitude is over a certain threshold, it's illegal. So that way, teams are forced to decrease porpoising either by finding a solution or by increasing ride height.
@gold9994
@gold9994 2 жыл бұрын
The problem with propoising is that it doesn't occur in the wind tunnel and CFD. So to fix it, they have to run every iteration of the car, which Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren clearly have the resources to spend for this problem (They can spen 100 million to fix these problems). However, with the "Track testing ban" and "Budget cap", they can't solve this problem. That's the main issue.

This. They should meatball flag cars for excess vertical G amplitude v. period. They have all this info live from G meters. Willing to bet merc changes their tone when ride height isnt a part of the discussion.

FIA should mandate a maximum G-force allowed from porpoising and disqualify cars that exceed it. That will fix it fast.

@mattbell1907 2 жыл бұрын
Have a number and each time the vertical G-force exceeds like 2G it adds onto a score. At the end of a session if you are over for example 2000 then you are disqualified. That would be a total of 1000 2G bounces or 500 4G bounces.

They changed the aero package, the tires and the suspension. Maybe pull back a bit on the suspension changes allow a bit more controll of the hight. Not allowing active suspension but maybe allow some of the gadgets they removed for this year. Even this or any regulatory change should only happen at the end of the season. Until then raise your car!

But: they both have had eqally as many DNFs, but Leclerc has so many more poles! And still max has turned a 34 point down to 34 points up in just a few races, and Leclerc doesn't even have a consistent teammate to eat into his points (exept in Monaco where Sainz took strategy into his own hands and away from the team). Championship deffo not over, but we will see what'll happen. But at this time Verstappen seems to be the better driver in the slightly slower but more consistent car. That is at the end of the day what breeds champions in a year where teams are this similar in performance

I agree that the FIA should not change the rules just because some teams have problems, but maybe when they really need to change something, a possibility would be to allow ride height setup changes between qualification and race? That way, teams can qualify on optimal performance setup for their car, and then tune down for the race in order to keep the driver safe. In the race it is a little less important and maybe teams would not be tempted to setup the car for optimal performance but less safety?

Asking teams and drivers to sort the bouncing out themselves is like asking a crack addict to "just stop smoking crack you idiot". This is about saving the drivers and the teams from themselves. They are not going to ever decide to just go slower. They will run themselves into the ground before doing that. If the FIA don't step in. there is going to be some injuries coming for sure.
@dohtje5029
@dohtje5029 2 жыл бұрын
The FIA can step in as long as they don't penelize the cars that got their shit together. In your analogy about crack. forced increased drive hight if you have bouncing problems, just as if they are in a rehab clinic, but saying 'they are addicted to crack, so now you all need to do crack to make it fair' seems a bit farfetched.
