2020 C8 Convertible Corvette [First Drive & Full Review]

First drive and review with the all new 2020 Chevrolet C8 Corvette Convertible. This 2020 Convertible C8 Corvette is finished in Long Beach Red Metallic Tintcoat ($995 option) and has a 2LT preferred equipment package ($6,800 option) with a Natural interior.
This 2LT package gives you a Bose performance series 14 speaker audio system, head-up display, cargo nets, HD front curb view camera, a memory driver and passenger convenience package, the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Premium system with navigation, performance data and video recorder, heated and ventilated seats, power lumbar control and power seat bolsters, heated steering wheel, advanced theft-deterrent system, universal home remote, wireless charging, 9 additional months of SiriusXm radio trial, power heated outside adjustable power folding mirror with turn indicators and auto dimming on the driver side, rear cross traffic alert and side blind zone alert.
This also has the Z51 Performance package which gives you Z51 Performance Brakes, Z51 Performance Suspension, Performance Exhaust, Performance Rear Axle Ratio, Electronic Limited Slip Differential, Z51 Rear Spoiler, High Performance tires- Run Flat (winter tires on our tested model) and a heavy duty cooling system.
Additional options: GT2 bucket seats ($1,495), Front Lift- with memory ($1,495), and Edge Red painted brake calipers ($595)
Total MSRP of vehicle as tested: $83,875.

The interior of the Corvette C8 is so unique with the square/circle steering wheel and the cockpit design of the interior. The mid-engine design is a first for the Chevrolet Corvette and also the first time Corvette has put a hard top on a convertible model. The C8 pricing starts at $59,995 for the Coupe and $67,495 for the Convertible and both give you 495 horsepower with the performance exhaust!
I tested the launch control and it was extremely fast and fun. Winding up the vehicle to 3500 RPM and letting off the brake was such an exhilarating experience.
The 2020 C8 Corvette by Chevrolet has a 8 speed dual clutch transmission or 8 speed DCT. The engine is a LT2 6.2L Small Block V8 with 495hp when equipped with performance exhaust and 470 lb/ft. torque.
The Long Beach Red Metallic color is being replaced by Red Mist Metallic Tintcoat for the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette.
Another new color for the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette is Silver Flare, which will replace Blade Silver.

I bought the base lt1 in red w black interior and red seats. 59995+ttl. What a blast. I have a 74 454, which is fun, but the c8 grows on you, better every day. Im 6' and that was the test. Lots of room. I got in the sample car in January and got out and ordered it. Bonus! It get 32mpg on hiway and 27 in town if you keep your foot out of it. Get one!!! Doug.

I love that it is a hardtop convertible, plus the looks both up and down. I am happy that it has built-in rollover protection. I had to add a rollbar to my last Corvette convertible so I could track it. I am in the order queue for a Z06 convertible.

You did a great job on this video. You didn't repeat yourself so the narrative moved on at a good pace. I was never bored. I would definitely order a C8 the way your feature car is equipped. There are a number of advantages to the convertible and only one downside. I'm on my second corvette the first one a 2005 stingray coupe. My current one is a 2019 Grand Sport coupe. I can handle the in and out of the targa roof but I would enjoy the ease of this convertible. The real advantage is you don't lose the rear storage when the tops down and that would be a real advantage on a trip. I wouldn't want to be forced to drive with the roof on because of space needed for luggage. The only downside is you can't see the engine. The engine looks so cool nestled behind the driver and that can be enhanced with options and after market embellishments.

My brother got one with 1100 miles on it for 84.5 K. He found it on Flea bay. has red calipers Z-51 and elkart lake blue. I like the candy apple red myself.I think that Z-51 gives the tuned pipes & 495 hp.He said I can drive it,I'm old&decrepit😑 He sold a C-7, It had over 100k on it...It was still fast.

I usually prefer coupes over convertibles. But I think the C8 convertible looks even better than the coupe. However, I think I will still go for the coupe, because of the engine being visible and the top is also removeable, for an open top experience.

Finally found a car reviewer my height (6’5”), subscribed! BTW I’m sure you already know this, but... the VW GTI has phenomenal head room. I have about 4” headroom in the driver’s seat of a GTI, and can even ride in the rear seat with plenty of headroom (thanks to the car’s boxy shape) and enough knee room.

I didn’t keep track of them to be honest. I was only doing street driving with this convertible too. I did track a C8 coupe from NCMMP a few months back and had no issues. We did about 7 laps in it.

After watching your video. I took out my 2018 C7. Being 6'5.5, I felt like I was seating to high. Instead of having seat all the way back on both and having look just under the visor, I pulled seat forward and leaned back of seat back further and I was looking much lower on windshield. Draw back, had to put my left foot behind brake due to knee hitting dash! Hopefully, when I get the C8 convertible, I wont have to look so high and knee wont be an issue on dead step with the dash!!!

1955 C-1 "on" through C-3 had hardtops for their convertibles. The rest C-4,5,6,7 had targa tops for their hard tops and just softtops for the convertibles. This is surely a new era and fun too.

As with most American and German vehicles, I recommend setting aside $10,000 or more for inevitable repairs after the warranty expires. With the Lexus LC500 and LC500h, this is most likely not necessary.

I've never been a fan of the new Vettes (always liked early to mid 60s models though), but there is something about this mid-engine version that really catches your attention. The main thing I'm wondering about, is with the top being stowed in the engine compartment, is there any data on how it will handle the heat from the engine? It seems very strange to me the top would be stowed on top of the engine, the compartment closes over it, and it's exposed to the heat the entire time you are driving.

Great question Joe. I tested this out and here are my results. With the top down and both side windows down and the back glass all the way down, you don't really get much buffetting, just general wind noise. With the top down, side windows up and back glass up, you get a little more noise and what sounded like a small bit of buffetting. The ideal driving scenario for me was: Top down, side windows up, and back glass down. Hope this helps!

@@spincraft The only color in 2020 that I liked was LBR. I actually saw one at my local dealership. Apparently, it is NOT a popular color. (5%). Now they have discontinued it. But it is hard to determine what the new red mist actually looks like. I don't care for the candy reds and orange tints ... so I need to see one of these in person since you can never tell what they look like from pictures online. But how can you do that when it is not even in production yet? Oh well ... another year goes by. I'm not shelling out $100K for a car that Ive never seen the color.

Still in love with my C7 Zo6 definitely the best value and not to mention destroying most exotics on the streets. Plus, I can do my own oil change for less than $ 105. My Porsche 911 cost much more to maintain.

Great review! I had a 1981 L82, last year of the carburetor. It was fun, but really looking forward to getting a 2020... or 2021!
