Thanks for the great video. I also have a 2020 RT Ltd and wondered how to safely carry additional fuel. Your idea is great, however I carry a pillion and therefore I’d need to come up with another solution. Keep up the great work 👍😊

Thank for watching, I’m pleased you enjoyed the video. Yes, unfortunately the cans just won’t work with a pillion 😕 All the best with your Spyder adventures. Cheers, Len

Great job lenny, the only thing i would do different would be to mòunt the jerry can on the foot platform to help hold the weight more, but good job ol mate.

Thanks, Phil. Yep, that was my first idea and would possibly be the best way to mount the can. I worked on it for a while, but I had difficulty designing the best/most efficient way to attach the can to the foot board with materials readily available. The major forces on the can are vertical and the mount is strong. However, I could design and attach a plate to support the base of the can. More R&D fun? Cheers, old mate.

@@motostralia5563 I think Phillip is correct. I see you had a pretty big plate of that aluminum. Could you have designed a bracket large enough to duplicated the foot board mounting holes AND had separate mounting holes for the gas can? Perhaps shifted forward or backward a bit if necessary?

@@willphelps6715 Hi Will. Phillip’s idea is worth further consideration. I have been continuing to think about options. Not sure about using 10mm plate, but I am considering fabricating something out of sheet metal to support under the can. So far, so good with the weight of fuel in the cans - I made one for the other side - but an extra level of support would be better. If I make something I’m happy with, I’ll upload it as a Part II. Cheers

Great job! I thought you were going to design it retaining the foot rest for it to set on. I lost a gas can on a trip once, hit a pot hole and broke its mount, resulting in an explosion I will never forget !

Same as Bill below, I thought you'd be retaining the footrest for support :-) But if it works, it works. And I'm sure you know what your doing :-) No intetnion of getting one but thoroughly enjoyed your video. Job well done :-)

Hi, OCEAN Security, Thanks for your kind comments. Yes, I thought of incorporating the original footrests, but the process in doing so was problematic and, for me, a case of over engineering. Once the current mounts were made I could see they were plenty strong enough. The mounting system is not unlike other mounts on many two wheel bikes that carry cans much the same as those Im using. I guess the can itself is the weakest part of any mount, but they haven’t shown any signs of fatigue, at all. I’ve ridden long distances over some quite bad roads here in Australia, but all good, so far. I take them off when I’m not touring, so, I guess that helps. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Len

Great video. It is good that you still can put the foot rest back in place if you need them. One thing you mentioned that your Spyder in Australia used 95 octane. I am in Canada and we run 91 in our Spyders. The highest I see over here is 93 but that is not available every where. Cheers from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 I subbed your channel.

Hi Canuk Spyder, and welcome to the channel 👋 Greetings from the Blue Mountains 🤙 Thanks for the comment, I’m pleased you enjoyed the video. Yes, I read somewhere that it’s 91 octane in some countries. Our 91 octane in Oz is not recommended for motorcycles and such - it’s mixed with 10% Ethanol, which is not great for bikes. Yes, the fuel cans and brackets on the Spyder are quite easily removed if I need the footboards for a pillion. So far, so good 👍 I trust all is well for you in Ontario.

Did you ever get up with Phil about the 2gal gas mount on his older Spyder. I have not heard anything.

Hi Lois, apologies on behalf of Phil. He’s still overseas and has probably been full up doing stuff, or has just forgotten… 🤔 He’ll be home next weekend, but in the mean time I’ll contact him again and ask him to get in touch through this forum. Cheers, Len

Ok I like the idea wow are you going to keep the gas vapors from u building pressure from being in the heat pf the sun? I was also wondering couldn’t you just carry a bottle of octane booster that you could just add to what ever grade gas you can find that day
@motostralia5563
@motostralia5563 2 жыл бұрын
G’day, I hadn’t really thought about gas pressure build up. But, I guess it would be the same as with any other gas accessory can - it just expands enough to compensate for the pressure. You’re right about the octane booster, but part of the problem in the past has been that I have a tendency to miscalculate (or, to forget) to fill up when I should. I do have some octane booster that goes with me, but I don’t want to use it - I costs almost as much as the fuel can 😳 Cheers.

How did. your friend mount it on his older Spyder. I have a 2015 Spyder and want to mount a 2 gal on each side on the passenger floor boards. We are planning on going to Labrador since they have paved all the road up there, but will need extra gas. You think you can give me a few hints or find out from your friend on how he did his. I sure would appreciate it. Thanks

Greeting, Louis. It was a bit trickier to do the can setup on Phil’s Spyder. I’ve been in contact with him and he’s going to reply to you on this forum. He’s travelling to New Zealand today for a few weeks and will be able to give you detailed information and maybe some pictures when he returns. I’m thinking if there’s enough interest I could make a video on how it was done. Hopefully, we can help you out before you head off on your trip. Cheers, Len

What about just carrying some octane booster on board? Maybe they don’t sell that stuff n your area. It’s sold all over here in the USA.

Hi Dj Project, we did buy some last time we had difficulty buying 95 octane. It’s expensive, though. Also, a couple of times we have miscalculated mileage and fuel station distances. Carrying a can, or two, will address both issues. Cheers

@@motostralia5563 have you used Octane booster with Oz fuel in the Spyder? I carried some with me through Central QLD last year and didn't need to use it. I am off to Tassie next year from QLD and I am taking an odd route down. My second day is Tamworth to Bathurst, and whilst the internet says Coolah has 95, you can't always guarantee that is the case in rural Australia. I have the F3S with a wheelchair mounted where the left pannier should go. It starts to limit options to mount or carry fuel.

@@spyder_67 Hi, we bought some octane booster when we arrived in Cunnamulla, Queensland and found we could only get 95 octane at the fuel depot - service stations didn’t carry it. However, we didn’t need to use the booster as we found 95 on the rest of the trip. Yes, it would be difficult carrying an extra can if you have a wheelchair attached to the Spyder. Carrying the booster is a great idea. When you take the Spirit of Tasmania they will ask you to turn off your alarm as the rocking of the ship can set off bike alarms. Some riders have found their battery flat when they get there. That would not be fun. All the best for your trip down to Tassie, you will love it down there.

Thats fine if you always ride solo. If you have a co rider most of the time it would not be a very good mounting spot.

G’day, Donald. You are absolutely correct. The only time I ride with a pillion is when one of my grandkids wants a ride. When that happens again I’ll take it off and replace it with the foot board. It takes less than 5 mins, so is not big problem. Cheers
