Watching this in early December, just ate the last cherry tomato from my plants yesterday. This video makes me miss summer, so much. I save seeds and I like the mystery of goofy looking tomatoes.

The "Blondköpfchen" - or Blondkoepchen if your keyboard cant type the ö (oe) / ä (ae) / ü (ue) - has definately a german name ("blond" + "head" but in a belittled form), and might have German roots but some sources also claim Hungary as its origin. There also seems to be 2 types of it with this name, one a Cherry-tomato, the other more a Salad-tomato type, both pretty similar to each other.
@gapey3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. I will have to hunt for the salad tomato version :)

@@gapey I ordered some seeds for the coming season in a very little webshop (probably private run as they do not show/report trade-taxes, only companies have to in GER), which also happens to sell both types (Cherry one sold out). I got nothing to do with it, but can report that i got everything I ordered (+1 extra variety as gift) labeled and packaged properly; furthermore I cannot say anything yet. If interested, search for "tomatenjunkie" and the german-domain ending "de" and "slash" "varietyname" (hier ö as oe) ... international shipping fee is 2.20€. Sorry for the mess but i didnt want to post a direkt ink 😎

Hi Gapeys Grub, I am wondering how much stem you put on your tomato plant (Barry's crazy cherry) and WOW extremely big clusters what's your spacing for your cherry tomatoes from each plant? Thanks
@gapey2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure I understand your question about putting stems on my tomato plants. I don't put stems on them. I use about 2ft spacing between all my tomatoes as that is the closest I can fit the Texas Tomato cages that I use.
@williamqwamdaayyyyyyy50742 жыл бұрын
@@gapey Hi, I mean like suckers, do you prune your cherry tomato plants? I have heard many recommend to prune to 1 leader, (main stem)
@gapey2 жыл бұрын
@@williamqwamdaayyyyyyy5074 oh yes I do prune the suckers. Maybe not to 1 leader though. I will usually do 2 main leaders. If it's a dwarf or determinate variety I will not prune as much.

Yeah seems like I grew a lot of hybrids last year that I got from seed swaps. not sure the people I got them from were aware they were hybrids or not. I usually don't grow hybrids unless they're from a seed company but I felt adventurous last year I guess. :)

How did the presumably F-2 supersweet 100's taste?
@gapey4 жыл бұрын
They are pretty sweet. The tomatoes are very firm and meaty or maybe they just weren't ripe enough? I'll try letting some stay on longer and see if they get any softer. I'm hoping to do a brix test on some of these to see just how sweet they are.

@@gapey And I really like Sun Golds (not growing them), but you prefer Barry's. What are the reasons for that other than how prolific? I have potted space for only one tomato plant, and the one I'm growing now is sweet but not producing well in a pot. I've tried twice now. In-ground is great, but in a pot gives very few small tomatoes.
@gapey4 жыл бұрын
@@jennifereverett6298 I've never tried growing them in a container. They taste sweeter to me than even sungolds and they are a beautiful yellow color. They are also pretty crack resistant and age pretty well after picking.

@@gapey Thank you greatly! I'm currently growing Super Sweet 100s which are very crack resistant, never mealy, and always sweet even if eaten before fully ripe. The flavor is nice but not as complex as with Sun Gold and savory tomatoes.
